A few short reflections and a tribute to each one of our 2017 graduating class, these images will stay with me for a long while to come.

MY JOURNEY

R

In grade R, its like being in a fairy tale land, to be what you want to be, to do what you want to do, because you don’t have a care in the world. l was at Philadelphia Primary in grade R, where all we ever did was maybe watch a movie or play or eat. My best thing to do was to eat because l was the only child, no l am lying my brother was 2 years old and l had a cute little sister that was just born. I had the best friends ever. There was this girl ,her name was Anna and she would always kiss the tree and say it was her boyfriend, l actually laughed at her, don’t blame me! l was just 6 years old. I think she did that for attention because everyday the children would laugh at her. l loved watching the big children play netball. I would even cheer for both teams.

1

In grade 1, I was in Philadelphia Primary. My best friend’s name was Stacey. She was a bit smaller than me and l always put it on me to protect her. There were always bigger children picking on her, and l always felt the need to cover up for her and if they wanted to try anything, I would just walk away. My teacher in grade 1 was the sweetest, best dressed and strictest teacher ever. She was my favourite teacher. She had blond hair and her name was Marake. I always thought that l was at a private school, because l always used to pay school fees. In grade 1 I could finally play netball. l was so excited. I even did a happy dance before any game l played. I wasn’t really a very good player but at least l played. At assemblies my teacher would always talk about the Lord or someone’s testimony and it would inspire me a lot, even as a child.

In grade 2, l was in Philadelphia Primary, and my teacher’s name was Alida.

2

My teacher was kind and caring, but she stressed a lot, because she was pregnant with a baby boy. We as kids could be a handful. Stacey and I always stuck together through thick and thin, but there was this girl that l hated. She always wanted to talk to Stacey, but then one day l told her to get lost and we started arguing. She’s lucky the teacher came in time to stop us because l was going to rip her throat.

In grade 3, l was still in Philadelphia Primary. My teacher’s accent amazed me. l always wanted to talk to them, but at the same time I was shy.

3

I didn’t like the fact that we had English and Afrikaans in one class. It made me confused, but it did not bother me so much so l just went with the flow. My mom always got furious when l didn’t know my work because she kept telling me to ask if l didn’t understand. One day in class, the children in the class decided to start playing silence and they asked if I wanted to play too and me not being the cool kid, getting asked by the cool kids, I obviously said yes and while we were playing Ernest started bullying Zack again. I really felt sorry for him but I never said anything to the teacher, but that day the teacher came back from the office and asked me what happened and l lied to her. To this day I really regret.

In grade 4 I was transferred from Philadelphia to Kerria Primary and I was not at all happy.

4

On the last day that I was there, I didn’t even say goodbye to my friends or teachers, but it was fine because my friends were fake anyway, except for Stacey. The first day, when l got to the class with my parents, the first thing l saw was a big teacher sitting at the table and reprimanding a girl for always coming late. My mom felt so sorry for me, she wanted to let me go back to Philadelphia. Isn’t my mom sweet? Grade 4 was a big step for me, because you move from foundation face to senior face and you get treated way differently than the way you were treated before. My friends in grade 4 were the best of friends you could ask for. If someone messed with me, they would sort you out. It’s because I was the shorty in the group. I would always be average in my schoolwork, but my mom would never stop pushing me to improve my results.

In grade 5 I was in Mr Frans Herwell’s class at Kerria Primary.

5

He was the scariest sir ever, because of the way he would scold the learners. When my class and l found out who our class teacher was, we were like really scared because we didn’t really know him, but we soon really got to know him. He was really a fun teacher from my point of view. When he scolded me, l would be really angry at him, but there would always be something he would do to cheer me up. I don’t know how he got it right, but he did. When I went to school in the mornings, I looked neat and like a decent lady, but when l came back home from school, l looked like an animal. My hair would stand up in different directions, my buttons of my shirt would either be tangled or loose and one shoe would be in my bag. My grandmother always used to tell me that if I am in grade 7 I’m gonna be embarrassed and l only know now what she meant.

W

hen I was chosen as head girl and it meant the world to me. It meant that I had to be on a whole new level and that I had to step up my game. I needed to be a example to the rest of the learners.

In the beginning of grade 7 it was awesome but later I realise that it is a lot of work and that some of it was extremely difficult. I also see that there is lots of opportunities to become en entrepreneur. I want to become a doctor one day, more specific a neuropathic. In order to study for a doctor I need to take the following subjects on high school: Mathematics , Life Science and Science. After grade 12 I will study at a university. I still need to make up my mind between UCT, US and UWC.
