TO WINGS

We’ve assembled a more diverse collection of warbirds than any previous Wings Over Illawarra and built on last year’s popular aerobatics performances with the return of Matt Hall, a debut appearance by Paul Bennet Air Shows and the introduction of warbird aerobatics. On the ground we have performances by Australia’s favourite Freestyle MotoX team, Showtime FMX, many different stalls and displays, classic cars and the popular children’s rides. From humble beginnings in 2006 until 2013, Wings Over Illawarra grew into an award-winning community event under the management of the Wings Over Illawarra Organising Committee. This growth brought an increasingly unsustainable demand on the resources of that volunteer committee, of which we were part. Like any successful venture, Wings Over Illawarra needed commercial investment and management to realise its potential. Having been entrusted with ownership of Wings Over Illawarra, Bright Events Pty Ltd is investing in transforming it into a fully fledged commercial air show that will be an iconic tourism event for this region and NSW. At the same time, we are maintaining its community focus by working with Rotary and other volunteer organisations to support local charities. This year we will be donating funds to assist disadvantaged youth of the Illawarra through the Denny Foundation and Rotaract’s Twilight Tournaments program. For more about these worthy recipients see page 8. Wings Over Illawarra doesn’t happen without our sponsors and supporters. They are all listed on this page, but we particularly thank our major sponsor, Shell Aviation. We hope you enjoy Wings Over Illawarra 2014. Mark & Kerry Bright Bright Events Pty Ltd

AIRSHOW souvenir program representing the past, present and future of Australian aviation.

ABOUT

Former Qantas public affairs director and local author Mr Jim Eames will be speaking about his recently launched book Taking to the Skies which chronicles Australia’s aviation history.

THE SHOW

Wings Over Illawarra 2014—the first ‘Wings’ brought to you by Bright Events Pty Ltd—is packed with more action, excitement and family entertainment than ever before.

In keeping with this year’s national celebrations marking 100 years of military aviation, we are hosting an outstanding gathering of warbirds, most of which have either served in Australia’s armed forces or represent types that have helped defend Australia in the service of her allies. To help us honour military aviators past and present, we are pleased to welcome helicopters representing every current Navy squadron together with

the RAAF Roulettes and the return of the spectacular F/A-18 Hornets for the first time in four years. Following positive feedback from the aerobatics introduced last year, we have welcomed back Australia’s Red Bull Air Race competitor Matt Hall, Southern Biplane Adventures’ Chris Clark, the RAAF Roulettes, and added Paul Bennet Air Shows and warbird aerobatics. The Showtime FMX team add more airborne action a little closer to ground level in a show not to be missed! We are welcoming some special guests

Our VIP guest, Dr Paul Bevilaqua of Lockheed Martin Skunkworks in the USA is one of the chief engineers and designers of the Joint Strike Fighter that will be the next generation fighter for the RAAF. Behind the scenes, Wings Over Illawarra 2014 is the product of more detailed planning and consultation with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and other stakeholders than ever before. All of this work has been aimed at delivering you a better air show experience. We hope you enjoy it.

FOR THE RECORD!

RYAN CAMPBELL SETS NEW WORLD SOLO FLIGHT RECORD

The Illawarra and South Coast have been synonymous with Australian aviation records since aviation’s beginnings with Lawrence Hargraves’ box kites in 1894, Charles Kingsford Smith’s first commercial transTasman flight in 1933 and the many feats of the Nowra-based Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm. Now the region boasts yet another aviation record after 19 year-old Ryan Campbell from the South Coast town of Merimbula became the youngest person to fly solo around the world. Ryan departed Illawarra Regional Airport on 30 June 2013 and returned to a gathering of family, friends, supporters and media at the same airport 70 days later on 7 September 2013, accompanied by the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes in a

show of support and celebration. Ryan and his modified single engine Cirrus SR22 travelled through 15 countries, made 31 stops, flew around 180 hours and covered 24,000 nautical miles to beat the previous solo around the world record set by 21 year old American Jack Weigand, who completed his flight on 29 June 2013 - just as Ryan was preparing to depart for his record-breaking attempt!

Upon landing at Wollongong, a jubilant but exhausted Ryan described the journey and his reception as ‘overwhelming’. ‘Words can’t describe how I feel right now’, Campbell said. ‘What began as a wild, crazy dream has today evolved into a reality following two years of hard work. ‘I am sure this record will be broken one day but I will always be the first ever teenager to successfully fly solo around the world and I am immensely proud of that.” Ryan has been named Young Adventurer of the Year by the Australian Geographic Society, is writing a book and has commenced a program of school visits to encourage teenagers to pursue their dreams. Ryan Campbell will be a special guest at Wings Over Illawarra 2014. See page 9 for your chance to meet Ryan in the autograph tent.

WINGS OVER WATER! THE FLEET AIR ARM MUSEUM, NOWRA History is never as real as when you can reach out and touch it. At the Navy’s Fleet Air ARM Museum you can not only touch it, but see it, hear it, experience it and read about it – almost as if you were there. The Fleet Air Arm Museum is located at the main entrance of HMAS Albatross, the Royal Australian Naval Air Station at Nowra Hill.

Great Britain herself, to have operated an aircraft carrier in conflict, when during the Korean War, HMAS Sydney III served with the United Nations forces.

Displays in the museum trace Australia’s naval aviation history from its commencement during World War I, up to and including current Navy operations at sea with ship-borne helicopters

One hundred years of Australian military aviation are being commemorated in 2014 and the Royal Australian Navy has flown aircraft from ships at sea and from land air bases for most of the past century. The Fleet Air Arm Museum’s oldest aircraft is a 1917 Sopwith ‘Pup’ replica and aircraft and artefacts from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Timor and Afghanistan complete the collection.

Visitors of all ages can experience and learn about the machinery, technology and personnel that have forged the proud reputation of the Fleet Air Arm since 1917, and especially the period from 1948 onwards when the Nowra Naval Air Station was established. Supplementing the primary aircraft display hall, which contains over thirty heritage naval aircraft and helicopters, there is a research library and archive, an art gallery, a gift shop and a viewing balcony overlooking the airfield.

Operating hours are between 10am and 4pm seven days a week except for selected public holidays. Find full details at www.navy.gov.au/history

AIRSHOW souvenir program

An EXCITING

DEBUT

Amongst the excitement and action at this year’s air show will be some heart-stopping aerobatics performed by Paul Bennet Air Shows in Paul’s Wings Over Illawarra debut. Flying the internationally renowned Pitts Special S1-S aerobatic bi-plane, Paul Bennet will perform a well rehearsed display of high energy, engine screaming, smoke filled aerobatic manoeuvres including vertical and hesitation rolls, hammerheads, loops and more! The 4.7 metre long Pitts Special S1-S has a wingspan of 4.9 metres, weighs just 363 kg and with its 250 horse power fuel injected Lycoming Lycon engine achieves a maximum speed of 220 knots or more than 400 km/h. When introduced in 1944 the Pitts Special’s small size, light weight, short wingspan and extreme agility made them revolutionary and they remain popular with aerobatic pilots around the world. PHOTOS: Motty’s aviation photography

At the controls is Paul Bennet, one of Australia’s leading aerobatic pilots, who has flown in over 700 performances at more than 300 displays and logged more than 4000 flight hours in 40 different aircraft types. Paul was crowned Australian Unlimited Aerobatic Champion in 2009, won the ‘Unlimited’ title in both the Queensland and Victorian state championships in 2011 and 2012 and is one of only a handful of Australian pilots to hold a ground level aerobatics approval. Inspired by his passion for aerobatics, Paul practices several times a week to maintain his proficiency while continuing to develop and perfect his air show manoeuvres. An accomplished warbird pilot, Paul Bennet will also be flying his 1940 vintage Wirraway, which served as a WWII fighter/bomber and training aircraft, and his 1943 Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber.

Paul Bennet AND MATT HALL will be available in the autograph tent during the day. See page 9 for autograph tent schedule details.

SMOKE ON!

RED BULL AIR RACE RETURNS IN 2014 After a three year recess the Red Bull Air Race World Championship has taken off again in 2014 with Matt Hall taking his place in the 12-pilot field. Throughout the exciting eight race program spaning seven countries and three continents over nine months, Matt Hall will have his eye on the defending world champion, Great Britain’s Paul Bonhomme. Matt is contesting the series in his single seat, 380 horse power MXS-R aircraft that can produce gravitational forces on his body equivalent to fourteen times more or less than he feels at ground level while navigating a challenging obstacle course of air gate pylons at speeds of up to 370km/h and at altitudes of between just 15 and 25 metres. He returned to the series in 2014 as a strong contender having already set a record by finishing third in his rookie season in 2009 and performing well in 2010. Matt held fifth position in the standings following the second round race in Rovinj, Croatia in April, where he was on pace to finish in the

coveted final four before clipping a pylon in strong winds. After Wings Over Illawarra 2014 Matt is heading to Putrajaya, Malaysia for round three and he sounds like he’s enjoying every minute of the competition. ‘It’s been more than three years but I am over the moon to be in the position to return to racing and what a privilege it is, travelling the globe to fly my race plane against some of my best mates— the planet’s best race pilots—in Abu Dhabi, Rovinj, Putrajaya, Gydnia, Ascot, Dallas / Fort Worth, Las Vegas

Learning TO FLY As thrilling as it may be to watch pilots such as Matt Hall, Chris Clark and the Roulettes at air shows, one burning question the majority of us have is, how do you get there? For many, learning to fly and becoming a pilot is a childhood dream, yet it seems a job that only a lucky few get to experience. For most of us though, the step from the spectator’s side of the fence to the cockpit can be a lot easier than you think.

training their new pilots and staff. In ensuing years, the school opened its doors to everyday people who aspire to become private pilots, commercial pilots and airline pilots.

NSW Air, a hidden gem of the Illawarra provides training from the very first flight through to Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot and Multi Command Instrument Pilot. Offering single engine and multi engine training.

What sets NSW Air apart, making it a treasure of the region, is the organisation’s belief that aviation can be both a recreational activity as well as serious occupation. More importantly though is their open encouragement of everyone to get behind the controls and have a go.

daunting and there is often a steep learning curve, yet at the end of the day all of the hard work pays off. NSW Air encourages students to be the best they can be with a rigid training regime for those aspiring to be commercial pilots but a more casual approach for those wanting to fly recreationally. We focus on creating pilots with good airmanship skills that will carry with them throughout their flying. NSW Air is a gateway to the realisation of a dream. The true key to success in this business is determination, a willingness to learn and the ability to enjoy yourself.

100 years Military Aviation. In 2014 Wings Over Illawarra joins the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in celebrating 100 years of Australian military aviation. Since World War I aviation has grown in its lethality and strategic importance so that it now plays a central role in all military operations, whether Navy, Army, Air Force or joint operations. To mark this milestone Wings Over Illawarra 2014 gathers together warbirds ranging from heroes of WWII through to modern F/A-18 Hornets and the ADF’s latest fifth

The F/A-18 Hornet begAn flying in RAAF service in 1985 with 2OCU, replacing the Dassault Mirage III in the Fighter Bomber role. 75 were acquired in total, equipping four squadrons, based at Williamtown in NSW and Tindall in the NT.

As we marvel at the machines let’s also remember the men and women who served with them—in the air and on the ground—to defend Australia, and let’s honour ADF aviation personnel serving today.

When former RAAF Squadron Leader and Qantas international pilot Jeff Trappett flew his SAbre into Illawarra Regional Airport on Tuesday 15 April, it marked the end of a gruelling five year restoration project. Wings Over Illawarra 2014 may be this fighter’s post-restoration air show debut, but Sabre A94-352 is no newcomer to impressing Australian air show crowds having served in the 1960’s RAAF aerobatic teams the Black Diamonds, Red Diamonds and Black Panthers. The aircraft operated out of Thailand and Malaysia during the Vietnam War but never saw conflict. It was to be gifted to Indonesia until a taxiing accident at Denpasar Airport saw it returned to Australia and used as a training aid until

rewarding labour of love for Trappett who spent much of his RAAF career flying in, and leading, the RAAF Roulettes aerobatic team that succeeded the earlier Sabreequipped teams. ‘It’s beautiful to fly, you just sit there and you hardly touch it, it’s very effortless.

‘It was only half an aeroplane when I got it so I gathered all the rest up – it has taken me years to find all the bits.

‘This is the classic fighter – with the canopy and the set up it has got magnificent 360-degree vision, the visibility is superb.

‘It was onerous – a huge job – my Crew Chief, Rob Weir and team spent thousands of hours’, Jeff told reporters on arrival at Wollongong.

‘So when you’re flying you’re sitting up there and you can see the world – it is fantastic’, Jeff said.

Despite the mammoth task, restoring this old aerobatic warbird has been a

TBM-3E Avenger Scheduled to be publicly unveiled on 7 December 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbour led to the aircraft being named ‘Avenger’. Produced in many variants, the Avenger was considered a rugged torpedo BOMBER throughout WWII. Surviving US Navy service, Avenger 53857 was acquired by Central Air Service of Lewiston, Minnesota in 1963 and registered as N7017C, where it remained until 1972. In 1976, the machine was registered to Forest Protection Limited (FPL) in the Canadian

Province of New Brunswick as C-GFPM. Known as ‘Tanker 21’, this aircraft conducted fire bombing operations throughout Canada and northern USA. When FPL retired the last of its fleet of TBM fire bombers and advertised them for sale in early 2005, Steve Searle from Coolangatta, QLD purchased the Avenger and restored it to its original US Navy configuration. Taking to the skies

MEET THE AUTHOR AND HAVE YOUR BOOK SIGNED AT THE AIR SHOW TODAY!

Great yarns of Australian aviation from a man who lives and breathes flying, Jim Eames. So how do you test drive a Jumbo? And why did a civil aviation director once taxi a plane down Perth’s main street to attend a ball? From the ridiculous to the downright dangerous, the story of Australian aviation is full of tales of adventure and nation building. It is also a story about tragedy and eccentric characters with wild larrikin spirits. In this surprising, fascinating and sometimes very funny collection, Jim Eames brings together the great forgotten and untold tales of Australian aviation. Jim Eames explains “This book came out of a desire to revisit events which have marked significant landmarks in Australian aviation, primarily since the Second World War. Some of these events, seen in isolation, might have been well recognised at the time, but the

recollections of them have faded over the years. Others provide a sometimes surprising insight into Australia’s involvement in aviation, both domestic and international. Others still have remained largely unknown” Just some interesting facts include: Australia has experienced no less than five aircraft hijackings, the first of which occurred years before hijacking was to become established as the weapon of choice for terrorists All of the major oceans of the world, with the exception of the Atlantic, were first crossed by Australians Entertaining, nostalgic and very reliable, the stories Jim tells will certainly make you want to take to the skies.

Jim Eames, a Gerringong local, is the author of The Country Undertaker and Six Feet Under Up in Smoke. As one of Australia’s former aviation writers, and former press secretary to the Minister for Aviation and former Director of Public Affairs for Qantas, he is a man who has lived and breathed aviation. He also tells a great yarn. You can meet Jim today at Wings Over Illawarra at the stalls on Aviation Alley, see map or visit info tent for details.

Pursuing an Exciting CAREER Inspired by watching air force jets in action as a child and motivated by his passion for flying, JonathAN WARD is pursuing his dream of an exciting career as a fighter pilot and gaining a degree, self-confidence and leadership skills along the way. Jonathan Ward has graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) with a Bachelors of Business degree and a passion for flying. The Darwin native could not be more excited about his career in the Royal Australian Air Force. After three years as an Officer Cadet at ADFA, Jonathan says he has enjoyed immensely working for his degree. It’s given him a broad look at business and the opportunity to be involved with many diverse activities; for Jonathan this included being able to play indoor cricket and basketball for ADFA. Now, Jonathan is looking forward to reaching his goal of flying fast jets. “I have wanted to fly since I was six years old,” he said, “I can remember sitting at the end of the runway at Darwin RAAF

Base during exercise Pitch Black.” Pitch Black is an exercise where international aircraft visit RAAF Base Darwin and participate in a number of operational exercises. “When I watched it I knew that this was what I wanted to do. I have had a passion to fly since then and I have been told that once you have it you never lose it. Since then I have always dreamed of flying.” Jonathan decided that ADFA was the best place to achieve his dream job and found it to be a challenging environment that has brought out the best in him. “Going to ADFA you learn teamwork to face the challenge together and selfconfidence. “ADFA sets you up for high

achievement, adventure and a sense of accomplishment, that I cannot see getting anywhere else,” he said. Jonathan said his highlight at ADFA had been adventure training, where officer cadets and midshipmen had to fend for themselves out in the bush with the bare essentials. He also enjoyed a ride in a Chinook helicopter in his second year. “It was exciting to fly in the Chinook all around Canberra and while it isn’t a fast jet, it was still a great buzz.” ADFA enables officer cadets and midshipmen to develop the necessary skills to be successful junior leaders of the Australian Defence Force. These future leaders embody the best values of the services: Professionalism, Loyalty, Integrity, Courage, Innovation and Teamwork.

ADFA is currently recruiting for its 2015 intake. For further information on military training and study at ADFA and careers in the Navy, Army or Air Force go to: www.defencejobs.gov.au or call 13 19 01.
