The Writers’ Room The Writers’ Room program made literacy exciting for

103 kids through

• play writing, song writing, joke telling • field trips • typewriter books • special guests • homework help • healthy snacks • low child-to-volunteer ratios “We get a chance to finish our homework when our parents are busy.” —Jamie, age 9

School-Break Program During winter and spring break programs, Vancouver’s most atrisk kids wrote more than

60 stories. This summer, the kids published a book of

48 photos and write-ups. “The kids involved in Writers’ Exchange programs over the breaks have a leg up when they go back to school because they’ve maintained their literacy skills in a fun, engaging way.” —Jack Fox, KidSafe site coordinator

New This Year:

In-School Projects 130 kids in 6 inner-city classrooms produced student publications that met teachers’ curriculum goals.

“The end product was beyond anything I could have imagined. Seeing how happy it made the students, and the experience they gained, was incredible.” —Kyle Parent, inner-city teacher

“I really like when I make a connection with a child... and helping them achieve amazing things with reading and writing.” —Courtney Lawrence, volunteer mentor

Connections

2013/14 Since 2011, 560 kids have benefitted from Writers’ Exchange programs. Thanks to our new location, 800 inner-city kids and their families will have access to Writers’ Exchange programs in 2013/14. We can only maintain our existing programs and move forward with your help.

Please donate and volunteer today at vancouverWE.com
