Lessings catering brings good taste to Inidan Hill CC By ADAM STUHLMAN CORRESPONDENT

NEWINGTON — Indian Hill Country Club has a long history in Newington, having been first established in 1890, and it’s undergoing some changes as it moves into the new year. The club was recently purchased by Lessings, a catering company with roots dating back more than a 100 years, and executives say the new ownership will make wedding preparations easier for couples. According to Arnie Fink, dining director for Lessings, they are in the process of doing some renovations of Indian Hill.

“We have added new French doors and a gazebo, Fink said. “Our goal is to build Indian Hill into something prestigious that complements the golf course. Fink said Indian Hill has become an “all-inclusive destination catering hall, and that Lessings is going to be redoing the road in front of the gazebo, changing it to brick pavement in an effort to make it look more attractive. Michael Nesdale, general manager of Indian Hill, said that there will be some additional renovations in the restaurant and some of the reception rooms. “We are updating the 19th hole lounge, as well as the banquet

In addition to all the stylebased changes, Lessings has also changed the food. In American weddings, the food plays a huge

part in the type and style of wedding. Nesdale said a lot of work has been done with the food that Indian Hill serves, especially with the quality and quantity. “The quality of the food and the quantity of it has changed dramatically since Lessings took over Indian Hill, we have a lot of very established recipes and

programs in place from our other operations, Nesdale said, “and it was just a matter of translating them to here and finding out what the local needs are. According to Nesdale, the variety of foods has changed in that there are more choices of grilled foods, banquet-style foods and hors d’oeuvres. How to make the seating work for your wedding

Wedding & Banquet Facility

by Villa Rosa

METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS

One aspect of wedding planning that tends to send people into panic is wedding reception seating arrangements. Here are some useful guidelines for setting up seating arrangements that can help prevent family or friends from feuding or feeling jilted at your reception.  Place yourselves, as well as the bridal party, at a separate table that is in a prime location in the room. Be sure to allow the spouses or dates of bridal party members at the same table so couples remain together.  Some couples choose to seat both sets of parents at one table together — the parents’ table. Grandparents may also be seated at this table, depending on the number of people each table can accommodate.  If children under the age of 7 are invited, they should be seated with their parents. Children between ages 7 and 14 can be seated at a separate kids’ table.  Be mindful of guests with disabilities or mobility issues. Seat them close to the door, bathrooms or food station.  Instead of separating the bride and the groom’s family to separate sides, intermingle the tables to promote conversation.  Consider arranging guests by common interests at each table, seating business associates or parents’ friends together.  Take into consideration people who have relationship rifts and try to seat them separately. But don’t stress about this too much because it won’t be possible to accommodate everyone. You’ll have to hope that at your wedding a certain level of decorum will preside amongst all of your guests.  It’s not unheard of to let guests seat themselves. This takes the pressure of finding a seat for everyone off of you as a couple and enables you to think about the other tasks at hand. This can take place at a buffet wedding or a smaller affair.

Bristol classic Nuchies offers bridal couples range of options for any budget By ADAM STUHLMAN CORRESPONDENT

BRISTOL — With the wedding season arriving, and the holidays behind them, couples are looking toward getting married later this year. With spring on the horizon, this time of year is a busy one for couples and banquet facilities. Some facilities may be looking to add new features and expand into hosting weddings, while some may be looking to

just continue what they have done in the past, and look to build on that. Nuchies restaurant in Bristol has been in business since 1976 and has made the goal of providing strong service and a good time as the cornerstone for its success. With weddings being big business, it has various styles of reception packages available for different banquets, along with three separate rooms: the Hollis, the Josef and the Cameo. The

Hollis and Josef are the biggest and can hold up to 300 people, while the Cameo holds up to 110. In addition, there is a smaller room for parties of 25 to 75 people. There are three separate wedding packages, the New England package, the Classic and the Standard. The New England package requires a minimum of 125 guests at $90 a person, and each person gets a choice of three entrees

consisting mainly of various types of fish or chicken, vegetables, potatoes, an a p p e t i z e r, salad, pasta, and dessert. It also includes use of the entire facility, cocktails, a DJ, as well as a fivehour top shelf open bar. The Classic package consists of various floral decorations, a 5½-hour top shelf open bar, and a choice of three entrees consisting mainly of shrimp, beef or chicken, while guests start out with hors d’oeuvres, fresh vegetables and a five-course dinner.

The Standard package gives customers the chance of having a four-course dinner or a buffet, which consists of fresh fruit, pasta, a chicken and veggie buffet, roast prime rib of beef, filet mignon, or honeyglazed ham. With the restaurant recently celebrating its 37th anniversary, Mike Pasqualiccio, the vice president of Nuchies, gives credit to strong customer service and highquality food. See BRISTOL, Page 11

Couples put some pizazz into planning Today’s brides and grooms are infusing creativity, personality, cultural trends and most of all, fun, into wedding planning. The new normal is not normal at all. Here’s a look at eight alternative wedding trends that are popping up in 2012. Mini Wedding Dresses Whether it’s glammed up, vintage or breezy casual, kneelength wedding dresses are more practical and more personalized for today’s bride. As more stores roll out wedding boutiques like J.Crew and White House Black Market, brides can pick up a wedding dress from their favorite retail store. And let’s not forget that for some, that’s Etsy, where they can pick up a custom handmade gown for as little as $40. Fun with Color From black accents to bold

color blocks, color is king this year. And it’s not limited to the bride. Non-matching bridesmaids are coordinating in patterns or complementary color combinations. In addition to bold color palettes, shades of gray and stripes continue to be a big color trend. Alternative Gift Registries

Many couples are registering for gifts that will help them in a practical way. Travel agencies are starting to offer honeymoon gift certificates and some auto dealers are offering gift certificates toward the purchase of a new vehicle. CardAvenue.com allows couples to create a gift card registry for national retailers. Couples can get creative as they want: they can request gift cards to home improvement stores to offset costs of home renovation, or register for local restaurants so they can continue dating as newlyweds on a budget.

Theme weddings can spice up the ceremony METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS

Every couple wants their wedding to be memorable. For some couples, a theme wedding is the best way to accomplish just that. The day the wedding takes place may dictate the theme. For example, if the wedding takes place on Halloween, the ideas for the theme are easy. Many other couples choose a theme that highlights a specific interest or hobby or something that is dear to them. Here are some popular themes. ď Ž Holiday: The Christmas season lends itself well to wedding planning. The colors (red, green, gold) are already established, and most churches and buildings are already decked out in holiday finery, cutting down on the amount of flowers and embellishments couples need. Because the holiday season is so busy and a popular time for socializing, couples who want to tie the knot during this time of year should send savethe-date cards well in advance. ď Ž Vegas: Couples who want to tie the knot in Las Vegas but want to ensure all their loved ones can attend can recreate the magic of Vegas wherever they may be. Casino-inspired games and big buffet meals can make guests feel like they have stepped into a casino on the famed Vegas strip. In addition, an Elvis impersonator is essential to a Vegas wedding. ď Ž TV show: Some couples elevate certain television shows to cult status. Whether it’s “Friendsâ€? or “Star Trek,â€? popular television shows have been transformed into festive

A masquerade theme might be an entertaining theme for a coupleÂ’s nuptials.

wedding themes. Whether the idea is to go daring and exchange vows in costume or simply name reception tables according to characters or show locations, couples can include a little television fun into the event. ď Ž Fairytale: Many men and women envision a fairytale wedding complete with horse-drawn carriage and the “happily ever after.â€? This is what makes Disney properties as well as the various castles around the world popular backdrops for wedding events. ď Ž Interest or passion: Love to climb mountains? Avid about scuba diving? Couples who share a particular interest can include elements of this sport or hobby into their wedding. Invitations and decor can hint at the theme, and then special activities can further enhance it. Fish bowls as centerpieces underwater adventures, while surfboard-shaped invites may set the scene for a beachside party.

’Tis the season for wedding proposals By LEANNE ITALIE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK (AP) — The heck with lovey-dovey Valentine’s Day. Turns out December, with its holiday cheer, romantic winter backdrops and family gatherings, is among the busiest months for popping the question. “It’s a pretty time of year, said Jake Nyberg, 31, a video producer in Minneapolis. He chose Christmastime to drop to one knee in front of his beloved. “You know you’re going to be around a lot of family. You’re going to be seeing all the people you’d like to see after something like this happens. Sarah Pease, a professional proposal planner in New York, usually gets one or two inquiries a week, but once Thanksgiving rolls around, it’s more like one or two a day, with most guys looking to propose in December. While she specializes in elaborate surprise

proposals, she says the simple engagement-ring-under-the-tree trick is still popular. Laurent Landau in New York, a partner in DiamondIdeals.com, also sees the December bump: “October, November and early December, we probably see a 50 to 60 percent increase in the number of people buying rings with the purpose of proposing during the holiday season. And it’s not just regular folks; celebs confirm the trend too. Matthew McConaughey announced in a tweet that he proposed to his girlfriend, Brazilian model Camila Alves, on Christmas Day this year. And two days after Christmas, a spokesman for John Legend revealed that the singer recently proposed to his girlfriend, model Chrissy Teigen, in the Maldives. Christmas is considered one of four big proposal days, along with Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

Think before you take out a wedding loan METRO CREATIVE GRAQPHICS

Engaged couples about to take a trip down the aisle are increasingly choosing to pay for the wedding themselves. To meet the financial demands of the modern wedding, some may turn to loans for financing the wedding. One of the most important things to realize is that a wedding loan will need to be paid back and with interest fees you will have spent several thousand dollars more on the loans than the original principal amount. A loan may be a good idea for couples who anticipate considerable monetary gifts from guests that can offset the cost of the loan. Some couples might begin their profes-

sional careers after their wedding, which will increase their salary enough to repay the loan quickly. Others may have the money but want to use a loan as a way to establish strong joint credit. However, in a world where many people already live beyond their means, a wedding loan may

just be another shovelful of soil on a financial grave. The consensus among financial experts is that it is better to scale back the wedding or postpone it until you can save money the old-fashioned way. If a loan seems the only option, here are some tips. ď Ž Shop around on a wedding loan to find the best rates. ď Ž Decide how much you can afford to pay back within 2 to 3 years and stick to that amount. ď Ž See if options like refinancing a home or borrowing from family would be better than a loan. ď Ž Look at banks, credit unions and even programs sponsored through your employer to compare rates on loans.

Just as many men and women may have visions of what their wedding will be like, parents, family members and friends also may envision others’ weddings. Parents who have their hearts set on seeing their little girl in a white, princess gown or their boy beginning to start his own family could be disappointed at the prospect of an elopement. Modern-day weddings have become costly spectacles, with couples spending in upwards of $30,000 for the average fete. In some families the wedding can be about impressing others. This can make a wedding seem less enticing for a couple who wants to keep it simple. While the prospect of saying their vows atop a picturesque hillside in the middle of the Alps may appeal to some low-key couples, most realize that sharing the news of eloping with their family and friends is not nearly as appealing. In some cultures, the wedding is meant to be a public event. For other families, parents and siblings may almost feel robbed about not getting to share in an event as momentous as a wedding, especially

if the couple has already been a part of other family members’ events. Telling people of the elopement decision could require some finesse. Experts advise that family and friends should be told of the elopement idea — before it takes place. Although the conversation could be awkward, it will be much less of a blow than sitting down with everyone and saying, “Surprise, we ran off and got hitched! Discussing the idea with everyone and telling them the reasons why eloping seems appealing will start a dialogue. This enables friends and family to share their opinions and feel part of the decision-making process. If the reasons for elopement are over areas of conflict, such as what to do with blended families after a divorce, this might prove an easy and convincing defense of eloping. Some couples may find that their relatives are supportive of

the idea. After all, the money spent on the average wedding can be put to other uses, including using it as a down payment on a home or student loan payments. Many will feel comfortable with the idea if there is some way to celebrate, such as a small dinner afterward. It’s hard to please everyone, and few will likely be pleased if a couple elopes. There will be some people who feel insulted not to be invited to the wedding. However, one has to hold fast to the hope that if these people really love the couple they will eventually dismiss any ill feelings after a couple elopes. Couples who want to spare feelings may have a small ceremony at the courthouse and then elope and do it all over for just each other. Ultimately, a marriage is about finding compromises and what works for you as a couple.

Experts advise that family and friends should be told of the elopement idea — before it takes place.

How to make your reception stand apart from the crowd METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS

Nuchies in Bristol is a bridal bastion for the wedding planning set.

Bristol bridal bastion Continued from Page 6

“We are very well known for our Italian food,” said Pasqualiccio, “and we always give 100 percent no matter what may be happening. People can’t be fooled: quality, quantity and good service all build a strong business.” With regards to the food, which Pasqualiccio describes as a “unique multi-purpose food extravaganza,” Nuchies offers a specialty buffet, along with five other buffets all at $26 a person. The specialty buffet is $45 a person and consists of various pastas, chicken, vegetables, or meats and deserts. Pasqualiccio said that while Nuchies is not concerned about fancy decorations, they go out of their way to provide a good time. “People mostly look for something fancy, and we are not big on fancy,” said Pasqualiccio, “but for what we do and give for your dollar, no one will beat us. You get what you pay for, good service.” Pasqualiccio also said that people are allowed to decorate their own banquets. He and his brother Dave both started the business at a young age, 19 and 21, respectively. According to Mike Pasqualiccio they both got married at Nuchies, have held a lot of family functions, and both have kids that work there now. When they started the business, Pasqualiccio said the biggest struggle was that they had a strict focus on doing just banquets, which took years to recover from. One of the big factors contributing to their success is that they have maintained their status as a small company-30 employees, in large part due to the fact that Mike and Dave take care of many

responsibilities themselves. Pasqualiccio spoke about how necessary it is to keep overhead low-despite recurring costs-something any business manager can relate to. You must always be prepared for something to happen, he said.

Over the course of their lifetimes, many people will be wedding guests on several occasions. During the height of wedding season, weddings can run into one another. Here are some ideas that can make your wedding reception stand out.  Skip the big entrance. Those who were kind enough to attend the ceremony have already been introduced to the newly minted happy couple. Instead of spending the cocktail hour in the isolation of the wedding suite, mingle with your guests from start to finish. Being with guests during the cocktail hour means you don't have to make that big entrance from behind closed doors. Guests will have all eyes on you when you

step on the dance floor for your first dance together.  Dance to an upbeat number. Guests are expecting a slow, sappy tune. What they may not expect is an upbeat song that shows you are willing to have a little fun. Choose a tune that shows your excitement and love for each other.  Encourage couples to dance together. It's often customary for the bridal party to join the bride and groom on the dance floor midway through the first dance. However, that leaves spouses or significant others waiting in the wings. Instead, encourage your bridal party to dance with whomever they choose. Swap the garter/bouquet toss for something more meaningful. If you're part of a couple who feels the garter and bouquet toss

has become trite. Use this time to present a small gift or token of your affection to someone on the guest list who has served as a mentor or source of inspiration.  Choose one special component as an extra goodie for guests. Spending more money doesn't necessarily mean guests will have a better time. If you want to go above and beyond the ordinary, find one thing that you absolutely love and offer that at the party.  Hire a live performer. A live band adds a certain level of excitement that a disk jockey may not be able to provide. Those who are adding a cultural or ethnic component to their wedding may want to hire a dance troupe or another type of performer, like a bagpiper, as an added measure of entertainment for guests.

Free party consultation. Tents, specialty linens, china, glassware, silver, and more. Serving all of Connecticut for 42 years.

Wedding cakes create a sweet centerpiece CORRESPONDENT

Creating a stunning wedding cake has now become an edible work of art. However, the previous wedding cake trends of couture fashion designs and heavy layers upon layers of swag fondant are slowly fading for the season. This year’s bride is seeking an overall traditional look with a dose of modern whimsy that will help to create a lively, elegant feel to her reception. In the upcoming spring and summer season we will see that less is more. Cakes will become a baker’s canvas of white or ivory in color and butter cream or fondant icing. Allowing much to the imagination, airbrushed or hand

painted patterns and designs applied to cakes create what is really a work of art that is almost a shame to eat. The colors you will find mostly will be bright and vibrant colors such as tangerine, which is a fresh and fun new color for the season. Various shades of oranges, softer shades of whites, pinks and blush will be prominent, yet the popular and bold jeweled tones such as deep purple and navy continue to shine for many bridal couples choosing the perfect wedding cake. The traditional double tiers and taller tires for dramatic height is a request of many brides this season. The taller, the better. Fifty percent of wedding cakes will be adorned with some type of flower. Either fresh or a

handmade floral will be decided on when looking at the actual cake budget. A great new trend this year is to coordinate a floral arrangement to mirror your table centerpieces, place it onto your top tier, and accent the additional layer with coordinating flowers. Monograms or unique personalized designs make up most of the other fifty percent of cake tops. Now that we have the visual, what are we seeing on the inside for the 2012 season? Outrageous and creative selections bursting with flavor. The cake selections are a variety of vanillas and chocolate flavors to interesting flavors such as pink champagne and butter rum. The most popular trends for

NEW YORK (AP) — For do-most-of-it-yourself brides, wedding planning means lists, lists and more lists, with some spreadsheets thrown in for good measure. There are also the long, endlessly pored-over documents of vows, readings, even toasts. Did I mention lists? Enter Google Docs, the search company’s free, easy-to-use online document software. With templates for the spreadsheetchallenged and a slew of pretty Web tools, the service is like the perfect bridesmaid. She’s calm, collected and full of good ideas but not overly pushy, letting you steer the ship. She’s there when you need her. I started earnestly planning my April 2011 wedding around this time last year. After lots of penon-paper scribbling, I decided to join the 21st century and move my planning online. Do you have a wedding, civil union or other commitment ceremony coming up this year? Let good old Google help. I picked Google’s tools over dedicated wedding-planning websites such as The Knot for a few reasons: ■I didn’t want to be bombarded with girly girl ads, think-insidethe-box advice and expensive “must-have lists. No flower girls, cutesy favors or bright bridesmaids’ dresses for us (though we did have bridesmens’ suits). ■I didn’t want to join a site that asked for my full name, address and other personal information. I didn’t see why I should have to provide all that. The Knot’s privacy policy had not been updated since 2008. It says it participates in Facebook’s Beacon sharing program, which was shut down more than two years ago over privacy complaints. Time for an update, perhaps? ■Finally, I’ve been using Gmail since 2004 without a hitch (I’ll just let Buzz slide). I saw no reason why I shouldn’t let Google help me get hitched. To start, I armed myself with a to-do checklist from the popular wedding blog Offbeat Bride — another invaluable Web tool for

independently spirited brides. With my fiance and now husband, I took to Google Docs for our first task. We listed friends and family members we hoped would share our special day. With a set budget and relatively small families, this wasn’t too difficult. The next step, a bit more so. Because so few people send cards and letters through the mail these days, one of the more annoying tasks in planning a wedding is hounding your friends and relatives for their mailing addresses. Google Docs has automated
