Community involvement has been constant over the years

BRISTOL — Though the Mum Festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary and things have changed since 1962, one constant is the spirit of the festival. “The community involvement has stayed the same over the years,” said Linda Lubrico, who has been involved for 17 years and chaired the festival in 2004, 2008 and 2009. This year, the Mum Festival Committee invited everyone who served as festival chairman in the past to take part as a parade marshal, and at least 14 are making the effort. “We’re going to have a floatful on Sunday,” said Darlene Sawe, this year’s chairman. She said she’s excited about having so many past chairmen, including a couple from out of state, taking part. “It’s an honor for all the past chairmen to be recognized on the 50th anniversary,” Lubrico said, adding that she’s happy to be riding on the committee’s float alongside her uncle, Wayne Fuller, another past chairman. “I’m looking forward to meeting some of the chairmen from years

past,” Lubrico said. One of them, Jack Walsh, served as chairman in 1970, when the festival theme was “Happiness Is …” and the Mum-a-thon road race was first held. Walsh has fond memories of the festival. “It was so vibrant. The city came alive, it seemed,” he said. “The nurseries were in full bloom. We had a really terrific festival.” Walsh, who now lives in Oxford, is looking forward to attending this year’s festival.“The tradition lives on,”
city. The first weekend, Sept. 23 - Oct. 2, includes the Miss Mum pageant on Friday night at Bristol Central High School; entertainment, crafts and food booths on Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of Memorial Boulevard Middle School and a big parade through downtown on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Throughout the weekend there will be a private carnival operating nearby on the former mall lot. Saturday evening is an Oktoberfest at the German-American Society at 38 Barlow St. and a free outdoor showing of the movie Back to the Future on Main Street. The second weekend, Oct. 1 and 2, includes a special Saturday and Sunday sale of mum plants at the site of the old Bristol Nurseries at 50 Pinehurst Road. In addition, on both days, the Witch s Dungeon Classic Movie Museum opens with a special appearance of the Batmobile at 90 Battle Street and the Imagine Nation children s museum is hosting a family farms weekend at Roberts Orchard on Hill Street. Saturday night is a dance, Bristol Stomp II, put on by Team Bristol at the Bristol Polish Club at 541 North Main St. The last weekend, Oct. 7 to 9, features Mum Bingo sponsored by the festival committee at St. Ann s Church Hall on West Street on Saturday at 5 p.m. On Sunday is the 42nd annual Mum-a-thon road race at Healthtrax at 842 Clark Ave. Where: Various locations in Bristol, Connecticut Admission to most events is free or nominal. he said. “They’re doing a wonderful job.” Walsh said he’s most eager to reconnect with other past chairmen. “We had so much fun working together,” he said. “It was a team effort.” Lubrico said she loves being involved in the community and especially being able to provide free activities for local families. The festival itself has grown over the years, said Lubrico, who said it started Hill and has evolved into a three“We’ve changed with the times,” said Sawe. at Bristol Nurseries on Chippens weekend extravaganza.

MUM FESTIVAL
Two weeks of festivity begins with Miss Mum pageant By JACKIE MAJERUS STAFF WRITER
BRISTOL — The Mum Festival turns 50 this year and celebrating in style. Darlene Sawe, chairwoman of the Mum Festival Committee, said more than 60 booths — food vendors and nonprofit organizations — will take over the field at Memorial Boulevard Middle School. “We seem to get more every year,” Sawe said. “People just want to be involved.” The festival gets under way with the Miss Mum pageant Friday night at Bristol Central High School. Most of the official action is this weekend, but the festival continues through Oct. 9 and there are many other community events during that time as well that are in tandem with the festival. All day Saturday and Sunday there will be entertainment on stage on the Memorial Boulevard field, said Sawe, except for Sunday afternoon during the parade,
scouts, civic groups, Shriners in funny hats and tiny cars, beauty queens, twirlers, firefighters, fancy and antique cars, floats of all kinds, dancers, martial-arts students, fife and drum corps and politicians in convertibles, on floats and on foot. Bristol Mayor Art Ward said he’s looking forward to participating in all the activities through the weekend. “It’s part of the fabric of Bristol,” said Ward. “It’s great for the community.” The festival is a way for the people of Bristol to demonstrate their pride in the city, the mayor said. Sawe said people are so busy today that the festival has to compete just to get people to attend. “It’s harder to get people to come out now,” Sawe said. But she still expects a big crowd.
