continuously running amusement park — is an obvious place to start. Founded in 1846, the park is currently owned by Palace Entertainment, the U.S. subsidiary of Parques Reunidos. For locals, fond memories remain of visiting the park under former ownership of the Norton family, who oversaw swimming, amusements and a ballroom featuring some of the country’s top entertainers. Outdoor rock concerts with acts ranging from Jimmy Buffett to Metallica took place, drawing tens of thousands of fans. The park has continually grown and remains one of Connecticut’s most popular summer attractions. Museum-wise, visitors to Bristol should not miss the New England Carousel Museum, the American Clock and Watch Museum and the Bristol Historical Society — which also houses the Memorial Military Museum and the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame. Clocks and watches are intertwined in Bristol’s industrial history, with clock-making centered here from the early 1800s to the start of the Civil War. The Clock and Watch Museum was founded in 1952 and remains a go-to place for visitors year-round. The Bristol Historical Society was first organized in the early 1970s and has been in its current
building — originally Bristol High School, built in 1891 — since 2002. The society has been growing in recent years, providing visitors physical representations of Bristol’s history, along with informative programs. The Military Museum and Bristol Sports Hall of Fame, housed at the Historical Society, contribute memorabilia, stories and pictures from the past. You can’t mention sports in Bristol without giving a nod to historic Muzzy Field. The recently restored park hosted its first baseball game here in 1914, and through the past century has welcomed some of the most notable sports luminaries to play. Babe Ruth hit his first home run over the fence at Muzzy 1919. NFL Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi played football here in the 1930s while a collegiate player, and Casey Stengel brought the New York Yankees here in the late 1940s. Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs played for the Red Sox minor-league affiliate here in 1978 and 1979. For young players just getting started in the game, the A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center on Mix Street hosts the annual Eastern Regional Little League Tournament in mid-August. Two teams go on to compete in the annual Little League World Series in Williamsport,

Pennsylvania. The finals of the tournament here are seen on TV courtesy of ESPN. Speaking of ESPN, the sports network has truly put Bristol on the map. Launched here in September 1979, it remains the world’s preeminent sports network on both TV and radio, featuring the nation’s top commentators, athletes and coaches. Bristol’s proud military history is evident in its many veterans’ groups which hold programs throughout the year. Bristol’s American Legion Seicheprey Post 2 is named after the Word War I battle in which Bristol lost eight soldiers. Veterans Memorial Boulevard is one of the most beautiful tributes of its kind, showcasing monuments honoring those who served in all major conflicts. The 4,400-foot-long stretch was dedicated on Nov. 11, 1921, and its centerpiece is a World War I monument dedicated to Bristol’s 1,261 residents who served in the war. Bristol’s commitment to the military and its veterans will be evident this June, when The Moving Wall, a traveling half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be displayed at Veterans’ Memorial Park and Boulevard. The Moving Wall has visited Bristol once before, in 1998. Bob Montgomery, The Bristol Press, 188 Main St., Bristol, CT 06010. Call 860-584-0501, ext. 1808, or email: bmontgomery@bristolpress.com.
