‘Home is where the heart is’ Bristol is set and ready to celebrate the 56th Mum Festival By LORENZO BURGIO

BRISTOL — The 2017 Mum Festival will be a four-day packed weekend for all ages that keeps with the theme of “Home is Where the Heart is” and features a wide variety of events, activities, vendors, food, organizations and much more. Bristol was once known as Mum City and the festival is a part of the city’s history. Fall festivities used to be organized by residents for all in the region to enjoy. In 2016, the festival was revitalized by the Bristol Exchange Club and several talented people. Over the four days, the festival features a carnival, local vendors, crafters, local producers, restaurants, food trucks, community organizations, nonprofits, a car show, museums and live music and entertainment. There is also an array of things for children to do, including games and programming. Bristol’s own Brittany Decker was named the Mum Festival Grand Marshall and is proud to call Bristol her home. She was raised in the city, graduated from Bristol Eastern High School, was involved with the United Way Youth Board, The Boys & Girls Club of Bristol Family Center and was part of the Older Members cast. Bob Montgomery is the 2017 Hometown Hero in the city of Bristol.

Former Bristol Mayor, Bill Stortz, said, “It’s great and a well-deserved appointment. I’m very happy for him. Too bad he isn’t nominated every year. However they chose him, it’s a good choice and he really reflects Bristol.” Montgomery will be hon-

ored during the opening reception of the Mum Festival on Sept. 21. On the last day of the festival on Sept. 24, The American Legion is holding a Hometown Hero Breakfast where he will be taken to and around the parade in a convertible.

Miss Mum 2017 Emma Guilmette was crowned last week at the Chippens Hill Middle School.

BRISTOL — Emma Guilmette was named this year’s Miss Chrysanthemum in a pageant at Chippens Hill Middle School last week. In an on-stage interview during the pageant, which was hosted by Grace Gagnon and Allen Stone, Guilmette was asked by pageant emcee Gagnon, “What does it take to be a role model?” “They have to be confident to inspire others to be confident in themselves,” she responded. Contestants were judged based on three on-stage appearances and a Miss

Mum essay that focused on their individual visions for Bristol. The essay had to answer the question, “If you held a magic wand and could turn Bristol into your dream city in 10 years, what would it look like?” Guilmette also won the essay contest. She told the audience how vital a multicultural arts center in Bristol would be, and emphasized the importance of taking care of the environment and using renewable energy. Those things, she said, would “help the city grow culturally and environmentally.” Sarah Lacouture, a seventh-grader at Chippens Hill Middle School,

Mum Festival to have over 20 hours of live entertainment

BRISTOL — The Mum Festival Committee is so very proud and excited to announce over 20 hours of live music and entertainment will be a feature of this year’s Mum Festival. The Mum Festival has been an epic fall festival in Bristol’s history. Once known as the Mum City, Bristol was famous for this colorful flower, and through the years proud Fall festivities were put on by residents for all in the region to enjoy! This year’s Festival will run from Sept. 21 – 24

and will feature over 14 bands and performers playing over 20 hours of live music from local and regional favorites to bands attracting national attention. This year’s Festival will feature two entertainment venues - a Main Stage on the school grounds adjacent to the carnival and a Stage East location midway down the Memorial Boulevard just past the tennis courts. “Our focus on music and live entertainment has made the Mum Festival a statewide

must attend event”, said Maria Salice, Mum Festival Arts and

The orchestra, which will be playing during the Mum Festival’s first ever Art Gala, is under the direction of Dr. Carl Knox. The Stanley Street Band will perform a variety of swing and funk tunes with a contemporary big band style. “An 18-piece orchestra play-

ing under the stars during an exhibition of talented artists adds a real touch of class to the Mum Festival,” Salice added. “What would a Mum Festival be without entertainment?” said Jack Ferraro, Mum Festival Chairman. “With this in mind, we have made sure that this year’s Festival includes plenty of live entertainment to entertain people of all ages and we can’t wait to see all the acts take the stage in a few weeks!” — Greater Bristol Exchange Club
