Reduce stress, save money this holiday season
Overall, holiday shopping can be stressful — from choosing the right gifts, sticking to a budget, avoiding the last minute-scramble, and more. The December 2013 issue of ShopSmart magazine, from Consumer Reports, is stuffed with holiday advice that can help shoppers select the perfect gift (wrap it like a pro), save on their holiday purchases, get their home ready for holiday entertaining and more. “Our goal is to bring more joy to the holiday gift-buying season by helping shoppers make smart choices,” said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart. “We wanted this issue to be a one-stopshop to help them fine-tune their holiday shopping and entertaining game plans.”
automatic. Feeling stumped about what to buy for the people left on the list? ShopSmart suggests trying a gift-finder tool for inspiration, such as the one at Gifts.com (gifts. com/finder). ∎ Avoid shipping fees. More stores are giving shoppers the option of ordering items online and picking their purchase up at a local store – eliminating shipping charges. Best Buy, Finish Line, and Target are among the retailers offering this perk. ∎ Cash in coins for gift cards. Coinstar kiosks won’t charge a fee when users opt for a gift card instead of cash at a bunch of participating retailers. New merchants include Applebee’s, GameStop, Home Depot and Southwest Airlines.

Sweet Paper Crafts, using a few basic craft supplies: Load up on paper: Plain metallic and solid-colored papers are sold for a reasonable price at craft stores — about 20 cents to $1 a foot, which can save at least $1 a foot over high-end papers. Skip wallet-busting ribbons and bows: Shoppers can buy a giant roll of red and white baker’s twine for as little as $5. Or check out the sales bins at craft stores for yarn, rickrack, ball fringe and other inexpensive ribbon alternatives. Save on gift toppers: Look for inexpensive knickknacks to tie on

Conquering the difficult task of buying for your wife
‘Tis the season to be _____ (fill in the blank). Jolly — sure. Generous — absolutely. Caring, loving, compassionate, peaceful — without a doubt. Festive, decorated, colorful — true as well. But for us husbands out there, it’s also a time to be stressed! Come on fellas, back me up on this one! I know I’m not the only one whose leg shakes, hands jitter, heart beats a little bit faster and, I hate to say it, sprouts a few more gray hairs this time of year. I’d like to say the color change of our flowing locks is us getting into the holiday spirit by channeling our inner Santa Claus, but it’s not. It’s the anxiety and agita that comes with trying to figure out what to get the wife for Christmas. I know what some are thinking, “she’ll love anything you’ll get her.” And you know what,
on the surface, you’re not wrong. My better half always smiles and tells me she loves the new wiper blades, Patriots tickets or Jock Jams Volumes I, II and II, she unwraps. But that’s because she’s a wonderful woman and loves me, not the so much the gift. Even with that being the case, we never want to disappoint the person we love. So every year we go down the list of possible gifts. There’s jewelry, shoes, perfume, clothing, pajamas, slippers, gift cards, flowers or maybe a little something called lingerie. There’s also such things like booking a spa day or paying to have her hair done, possibly offering up a homemade coupon for a romantic massage. All great ideas, but let’s face it — jewelry can be expensive, perfume difficult to pick out, lingerie may not come off as the wholesome gesture you intended, and, if you’re anything like me,
non-professional massages can be less than enjoyable. There’s always electronics, too. Well, maybe not. “My brother once told me that he learned early in his marriage never to give his wife a gift with an electrical cord attached,” Sherri Athay, author of “Present Perfect: Unforgettable Gifts for Every Occasion” has said. “Though there are exceptions to every rule, it’s generally sound advice that I’ve shared with others over the years.” Those new smart watches seem pretty neat (and they don’t have a cord, when wearing them anyhow). But their coolness may wear off pretty quick. It’s only a matter of time before she gets fed up with trying to check the time and instead seeing yet another, “Where are you?” “What’s for dinner?” “Have you seen my keys?” text message. She used to at least be able to put her phone in her pocket to obtain that out-of-

sight, out-of-mind escape. In pursuing the Internet for ideas recently, I came across a blog that had some good suggestions, among them was writing 52 love notes, one for each week of the year. Sounds pretty nice, sweet, certainly inexpensive and relatively easy — until you sit down and try to think of 52 different things to say. In the words of YouTube sensation Sweet
Brown, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!” As each day passes and Dec. 25 inches closer, the stress only seems to grow. But in all seriousness, it doesn’t have to. I’ve come to discover it’s not impossible to find that perfect gift. It doesn’t have to be something extravagant, expensive or even a thing at all. Success is truly in the thought and in the gesture.

Zelda, Mario games to be hot items this holiday By BRIAN JOHNSON STAFF WRITER
SOUTHINGTON —— Wondering what’s hot in video games this holiday season? It’s all about the franchises. With the debut of the Playstation 4 Nov. 15 and the Xbox One Nov. 22, gamers are eager to get their hands on the new systems and play the latest installments in their favorite series. According to Andrew Quinn, manager of The Gaming Source at 1049 Queen St, the “blockbuster” releases are expected to be Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Pokemon X and Y, Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Quinn said he was particularly looking forward to the new Zelda and Mario games. “I’m a huge Nintendo fan,” he said. “I’m really big into the 3DS.” Quinn said parents might want to consider purchasing the 2Ds for younger children, for which the 3DS’s 3D functionality isn’t recommended. The 2DS, released Oct. 12, is compatible with both the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo DS released Nov. 21 2004.
“It’s about $120 cheaper” he said. “It’s also built a little tougher and doesn’t break as easily.” Quinn said he plans to purchase games over Steam for his brother and some of his friends who are “big into PC gaming.” Steam is a digital platform produced by the Valve Corporation, which allows users to purchase games and legally download and play them on a computer. For more information, visit store.steampowered.com. Call of Duty: Ghosts, rated M for mature, is a first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. The tenth installment in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U on Nov. 5, 2013. It was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Nov. 15, and Nov. 22, respectively, to coincide with the console release dates. Battlefield 4, rated M for mature, is another first-person shooter developed by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE) and published by Electronic Arts. It was released Oct. 29 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It will also be released

Gifts for movie lovers: Collectible DVD box sets By SANDY COHEN
$99.97.)
ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES — In a world of on-demand video and movies shrunken to the size of smartphone screens, home-entertainment releases need something special to stand out. The following box sets offer more than movies for every cinephile on your holiday list. For the superhero enthusiast: The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition includes writer-director Christopher Nolan’s three Batman movies — “Batman Begins,” ‘’The Dark Knight,” and “The Dark Knight Rises” — plus two new short features that go behind the scenes of the popular trilogy. Collectors will especially love the three Hot Wheels vehicles (the Tumbler, the Batpod and the Batmobile), collectible art cards of Scarecrow, Bane and others, and a 48-page book of production stills and other backstage shots from the three films. (Warner Home Video,
“X-Men”: The Adamantium Collection comes with a replica of Wolverine’s claw and all six “X-Men” films on Blu-ray: 2000’s “X-Men (2000), 2003’s “X2,” 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand,” 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” 2011’s “X-Men: First Class” and the summer blockbuster “The Wolverine.” (Fox, $129.99.) For the traditionalist: The James Dean Ultimate Collector’s Edition pays tribute to the enduring screen idol who died in a 1955 car crash at age 24 with a limited-edition set that includes three documentaries about the actor, plus the three films he made during his short career: “East of Eden,” ‘’Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant.” (Warner Home Video, $99.98.)
road with a limited release, fivedisc set that features the film in all formats (DVD, Blu-ray, UltraViolet, etc.), along with a new documentary, set of three collectible enamel pins, a map of Oz and a hardcover photo book. (Warner Home Video, $105.43) For fans of political suspense:
The Jack Ryan Collection comprises four films featuring Tom Clancy’s ultra-sharp CIA analyst: 1990’s “The Hunt For Red October,” with Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin; 1992’s “Patriot Games” and 1994’s “Clear And Present Danger,” starring Harrison Ford; and 2002’s “The Sum Of All Fears” with Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman. Books about Bristol or by local authors a good gift By STEVE COLLINS STAFF WRITER
BRISTOL - There are many books about Bristol – and by Bristol authors – that would make a great holiday gift. With the 100th birthday of Muzzy Field, coming up next summer, one possible choice is Douglas S. Mahan’s history Muzzy Field: Tales from a Forgotten Ballpark. Available as a paperback and an ebook, Mahan’s 2009 history cuts through the myths surrounding Bristol’s historic ballpark and lays out a real story that is astounding in itself.
He tells of visits to the ballpark by Babe Ruth, Vince Lombardi and other legends but doesn’t leave out the story of how Muzzy became such a critical part of the community. If sports are a passion, a novel about skating may fit the bill as well. Bristol native Beth Pond, a 2008 St. Paul Catholic High School graduate, recently wrote a novel called Podium Finish, published by Astraea Press, a romance publisher “that offers wholesome reads.” Pond’s book, about a group of teens trying to make the

Olympics in skating, is available as a Kindle download through Amazon. Pond, who is living in Vancouver, earned her bachelor’s degree at Hendrix College in Arkansas before earning a Fulbright Scholarship. She is also an alumni of Youth Journalism International, a Connecticut nonprofit with its roots in Bristol. Arcadia Publishing has several books of photographs that capture Bristol through the years. They include Gail Leach’s Bristol and Lynda J. Russell’s Lake Compounce and Bristol Historic Homes. All of them contain interesting pictures and stories. Kessinger Publishing has reprinted one of the classic Bristol history books, Bristol, Connecticut: In The Olden
Time New Cambridge, Which Includes Forestville by Frederick, Milo and Alice Norton. If you’re interested in Bristol’s biggest employer, check out the 2011 oral history of ESPN written by Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller. Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN is full of stories about the network’s growth from a tiny operation on Middle Street into the worldwide leader in sports. A book aimed at young people, Nathan Hale: The Life of a Colonial Freedom Fighter, was published this year by RoseDog Books. Its author, Barry Bishop, is a Bristol Eastern High School graduate who went on to become a teacher in New Hampshire. It is available as a paperback. There are plenty of other
Bristol-related books that are worth tracking down. Steve Collins can be reached at (860) 584-0501, ext. 7254, or at scollins@bristolpress.com.

Xbox One, PlayStation 4 will be must haves
NEW YORK — Remember a time before “Angry Birds,” the iPad and the iPhone? No? When Sony and Microsoft last came out with new video game consoles — seven and eight years ago, respectively, the companies touted the machines’ high-definition graphics, powerful processors and ability to play DVDs, and in Sony’s case, Blu-ray discs. But a lot has changed since then. People are playing games on a broader array of devices than ever before, and they have more options to stream movies, TV shows and music. Connecting with friends online is the norm, not an obscure activity for young people. That’s the world the Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One enter. The PlayStation 4 goes on sale Friday and the Xbox One will be released next
week. As Sony and Microsoft once again spar this holiday season over who has the brawnier machine and more enticing online features, hardcore gamers are all but certain to fall for the shiny, powerful new consoles. But what’s less clear is how the gadgets will compete for the attention of people who now look to their tablets, smartphones and other devices for entertainment. “It’s turning out that these consoles, in fighting each other for the love of the hardcore gamer, run the risk of failing to capture people in their homes,” says James McQuivey, an analyst with Forrester Research. Some gamers still on the fence on which one to buy PlayStation didn’t have a chance. He likes his interface, his username is already set up and his gaming achievements will carry over to the new machine. “Ninety percent is because I am already established in the Xbox community,” he says. Then again, neither the Xbox One nor the PlayStation 4 is backward compatible, meaning the machines don’t play games that were made for their predecessors. That gives players a clean slate to start with a whole new set of games. “Everyone is starting over to some extent,” Stein says. The console makers’ challenge will be to ensure that everyone does start over, instead of sticking with their own game console or perhaps buying an iPad instead of a new game machine. Tony Bartel, the president of the world’s largest videogame retailer, GameStop, expects the new consoles will be in “high demand and short supply” due to a huge pent-up demand for new gaming. After

all, unless they bought the Wii U last year, people have been playing the same consoles since before the iPhone came out. “There’s tremendous demand for innovation,” Bartel says.
Given the choice between an iPad and a PlayStation 4, Sony believes its consoles have an advantage during the holiday shopping season. “One purchase offers some-
thing that everyone in the family can enjoy together,” says Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “Whereas the other is a single-person experience.”

PlayStation 3 went on sale at $500 or $600 depending on the model in November 2006 while the Xbox 360 cost $400. Most new game software costs $60. Dan Perkins, a gamer who’s on the fence about which console to buy, says the “price is certainly a factor” nudging him toward a PS4 purchase — even though he was previously an Xbox man. “I bought the Xbox 360 primarily because I preferred the titles it offered to the PS3. A major contributor to this decision was the ‘Mass Effect’ trilogy, which was initially unavailable on the PS3 at the time of my purchase,” says Perkins, 40, a librarian from Syracuse, N.Y. “Neither platform has the edge on games in my opinion,” he says. “In the end though, a big factor will be which system my friends adopt.” The friend factor is why Pedro Amador-Gates decided to stick with the Xbox. The 37-yearold first-time father says he did consider switching, but the
