Florists make your wedding unique By JAMES DRZEWIECKI STAFF WRITER
Local florists strive to give their customers the best when it comes to designing wedding arrangements. The process might seem overwhelming at first, but Marzi Florist in New Britain and Hubbard Florist in Bristol make the process painless and personal. “I encourage brides to bring in clippings of what they like,” said Dave Allaire, owner of Hubbard Florist. “I like to personalize for the bride.” Hubbard Florist has been in Bristol since 1916 and Allaire has been running it for 38 years. They have set up a section where couples
can come in and look at different books and talk about what they would like to have for their wedding. Allaire stated that during the months of September and October he seems to be more busy with weddings, which might go against popular belief. “It used to be June,” said Allaire. He also noted that May is still very popular. In New Britain, Marzi Florist also strives to deliver the best service they can for couples. Cindy Gorsky, a designer at the florist, will sit down with a couple and talk about what they would like. 260 East St. (Route 10) Cristal Commons Plainville, CT 06062 www.premierportraits.net 860.410.4303
“We can give them ideas,” said Gorsky. “They usually have an idea of what they want and we just build on what they like.” After Gorsky meets with the couple, Marzi’s processes the information and then they design the arrangements. For both florists the time it takes for them to actually set up the arrangements varies by the size of See COUPLES, Page 4

Couples have the choice of fresh or artificial the wedding. “It depends on how large it is, it can take all day,” said Allaire. Marzi’s, like Hubbard, takes their time with their arrangments and neither place ever bites off more than they can chew. “We can do little, we can do
big and we can do everything in between,” said Gorsky. At both florists roses, lilies and daisies are very popular choices for couples Yet many couples don’t go the fresh flower route and purchase artificial instead, a choice which offers unique floral arrangements

Indian Hill Country Club continues to grow its business By KASSONDRA GRANATA STAFF WRITER
Indian Hill Country Club, located at 111 Golf St. in Newington, continues to grow its business offering new wedding menus, renovations to its facilities and training programs for its servers to provide “impeccable service.” “As in every company, we are looking to grow our business, keep our staff busy and work with local venders,” said Jim Miller, general manager of Lessing’s Inc. in Connecticut. Miller’s office is located at Indian Hill. “Here (Indian Hill) we are constantly making improvements to the venue and those imporovements are flowing through to our presentation, service and cuisine.” Indian Hill opened over 110 years ago in 1899 for member tournaments, weddings for members and other events. For the past 30 years, however, the club has been open to the public for those who wish to use its facilities. Miller said the public banquet facilities offer a “private country club feel” with no venue fees or member-
ship charge to customers. Indian Hill offers flexible wedding packages with a choice of plated dinner, buffet dinner or dinner station all for one price. Miller said there are also new wedding package enhancements with modern menu choices. Lessing’s Inc. has been the exclusive caterer for the past two and a half years. Lessing’s has a 120 year history and is the leading caterer on Long Island. Miller said Lessing’s hopes to make that same goal for Connecticut. Miller said there is an all inclusive destination catering venue for weddings, corporate events and family milestone events. Indian Hill has all new menus from newly designed wedding packages to casual buffets. “It is built with a strong focus on what people are eating now, providing healthy options,” Miller said. Indian Hill Country Club has completed numerous renovations such as stone work at the outside ceremony site leading up to the gazebo. It also installed Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting in the main ballroom and refinished the dance
Plated salad that is available at Indian Hill
floor. Carpet cleaning is scheduled for this month as well as in April for its spring cleaning, Miller said. Indian Hill is in the process of filling up its available 2014 dates and it is offering its new wedding
menu starting at $59.95, plus tax and administrative fee. “It’s one of the best values in the area, especially with our Old New England Style Club House as the location and our fantastic food and
service for your special day,” Miller said. Kassondra Granata can be reached at (860)584-0501 x7238 or at kgranata@centralctcommunications.com.

Tips to strengthen your marriage, relationship •Make enthusiasm a habit: When you reunite at the end of the day, do it with excitement and a 20 second hug. An extended hug stimulates the bonding hormone oxytocin. Stop what you’re doing for this reunion and let your partner know that he or she is a priority. This intentional hug beats the rote, “Hi honey I’m home.” •Remember gratitude: Every night as you get ready for bed, thank your spouse for something they said or did during the day. A focus on
appreciation at the end of the day “Gratitude is habit forming” says not only puts a smile on your mate’s Bush. face but also helps you finish the For more happy habits, visit, www. day with gratitude for your spouse. AshleyDavisBush.com.

“Highlighting your special and unique connection with a sign known only to the two of you,” says Bush, “increases your feelings of intimacy.” •Be nostalgic: Before going on a “date,” spend a few moments bringing back the feelings of your courtship. You might try remembering your first kiss, for example. “Deliberately reviving those heady feelings from the past infuses the present with old-fashioned romance,” says Ashley Davis Bush.

(StatePoint) For married couples, it may sometimes seem difficult to remember the early, exciting stages of the relationship. While bickering, stress and general ruts are certainly not uncommon, some experts say such pitfalls are mostly avoidable. “Love may be the reason you got married in the first place, but it’s not always enough,” says Ashley Davis Bush, a psychotherapist, Huffington Post blogger and co-author of “75 Habits for a Happy Marriage.” “Habits that promote intimacy and good connection will help to sustain your marriage over the long haul.” As Bush explains in her new book, co-written with her husband, Daniel Arthur Bush, a mental health counselor, the key to staying connected and in love in long-term relationships is to form simple, positive habits that can be integrated into your daily routine. Here are a few ideas offered in “75 Habits” that can help you and your spouse avoid conflict and promote happiness: •Wake and greet: When you first wake up in the morning, let your spouse know that he or she is special to you. Say this in person if possible. If not, text it, email it, leave a phone message or stick a note to the refrigerator. How you greet your spouse in the morning sets the tone for the day. •Stay connected: When you are separated in a crowd, at a party or even at home amidst kids, use an earlobe tug or other secret gesture to say “we’re in this together”.

wedding parties, including a garden area to host the ceremony complete with a gazebo, bridge and waterfall. It also offers a wide-variety of meal choices. “We customize our menus according to several factors including budget and style,” Mottillo said. “We do a lot of different ethnic foods.” Guests interested in the facility can also get a sample of it by attending a monthly social dinner. “We charge the very minimum for these events,” she said. “Usually we charge $25 a person and you get a really nice buffet dinner, dessert and there’s a DJ there. It gives people a chance to get a feel for our business.”
The next one is scheduled for Jan. 25 — anyone looking to go should call Krystal Gardens and make a reservation so the staff can cook for the appropriate number of guests. The family-run business is also very familiar with an event that is common in the Spanish community called Quinceanera or sweet-15. This symbolizes a girl’s transition into womanhood. “We specialize in those events,” Mottillo said. “We’re very accustomed to having them here.” Anyone interested in using Krytal Gardens Wedding and Banquet Facility on 1146 Spindle Hill Road should call Mottillo at (203) 879-

The basics of setting up your wedding registry
(Family Features) For engaged couples, it can seem as if there are a million things to accomplish before the big day arrives. One essential piece of the wedding puzzle involves creating a registry that makes it easy for guests to celebrate your union with gifts that reflect your personality as a couple. Before building your registry
It’s no wonder why guests love the ease and simplicity of a gift registry. But many couples may not know where to begin when setting out to create this useful list. Here are some helpful pointers from Macy’s to help
you get started on creating a perfect wedding registry: •Meet with a Consultant: These trained professionals are on site to assist and discuss everything you want and need. •Look for Special Programs: Some stores offer special features, such as Macy’s, whose Dream Fund allows guests to contribute any amount to the ultimate gift card, so the bride and groom can later choose what they want. •Start Early: Most couples like to register 4-6 months before their wedding date, which allows more time for choosing items. •Register Together: Whether it’s

in-store, online or both – make a day of it and have fun selecting all the things that will be part of your new life together. •Choose Different Price Points: Guests will appreciate a varied list that has many gift options. •Create a Registry That Reflects You: If you’re a laid-back, easygoing couple, consider registering for a more casual dinnerware pattern.
Making the right choices
With all the things needed to properly stock your home, selecting the right ones can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to keep in mind while adding to your registry: •Select Your Settings: A fivepiece setting is meant to serve one person and includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter
plate, tea cup and saucer. If you want to serve eight guests, you will need to register for eight five-piece settings. •Factor in Some Extras: When registering for drinkware, be sure to register for a few extras in each size. •Protect Your Cutlery: Be sure to choose a sturdy cutting board to protect your knife blades from chips and cracks.
