a cherry-nut combination batter. “It’s a delicious cake, we make it ourselves. It’s a very tasty wedding cake that’s been around for a long time. In 1989 when I got married I had a cherry nut wedding cake.” The most popular wedding cake, and one that will feed a lot of hungry wedding guests, is the traditional three-tiered cake, which can feed about 150 guests and can cost between $200 and $350, depending on the size, around, of the tiers.
Probably the most elaborate cake she’s ever done, Standish said, was a three-tiered one that had numerous staircases on either side leading to smaller-tiered side cakes, a waterfall effect in the middle and a gazebo on top. While the bride and groom topper were perched inside the gazebo, while representations of the bridesmaids and groomsmen were on staircases on either side of the cake. “That was the most difficult one I ever had to do.”

As a teenager, Sandy Standish was fascinated by wedding cakes and cake decorating in general. Her aunts all baked and decorated their own cakes and it wasn’t long before Standish convinced them to teach her the art. That was more than 30 years ago and Standish long ago turned her love affair of cake decorating into a lifelong career. “I can write with a frosting bag better than I can with a pencil,” she said. She currently works at Harvest Bakery in Bristol where she makes and decorates the bakery’s cakes. She worked there from 1983 to 2005, lived in Florida for a time, and came back here two years ago. Down South, she said, her clients were all over the map when it came to wedding cake designs. Lots of people, she said, wanted themed cakes. “I’ve done some really weird wedding cakes,” she said. “Gothic cakes, Mad Hatter cakes for an Alice in Wonderland wedding.” While lots of people typically choose marble-flavored cakes for their wedding, traditionally, she said, most wedding cakes are made from

Many venues to choose from in the region By ERICA SCHMITT

STAFF WRITER
utdoors or in, large or small, our region offers a wide variety of settings for celebrating nuptials. Some venues present couples all of the above, like The Cornucopia Banqueting Hall in Torrington. For the last three decades, the hall has been a popular place for weddings and other occasions. Owner Joe Ricci has renovated the facility over the years and enhanced the grounds. Now at 15,000 sq. ft. with two different banquet rooms, the building can accommodate up to 400 guests. An outdoor patio also gives couples the option of saying their vows on-site, so guests don’t have to travel far for the reception. “The staff is wonderful, the food is great, the grounds are beautiful,” Lucille Kelsey, event coordinator, says. “Whatever the bride and groom want we will make sure it happens,” she added. Cornucopia is hosting its Bridal Event 2015 on Sunday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local businesses that play a part in the industry – florists, jewelers, caterers, apparel shops — will all be there, and admission is free. Cornucopia Banqueting Hall is located at 371 Pine Woods Road in Torrington. For more information call (860) 489-5446 or visit CorncuopiaBanqueting.com. The town of Wolcott has a few different venues for your special day. Mahan’s Lakeview Fine Catering can do more than just the meal. Their wedding package includes an eight-passenger white stretch limousine, DJs from Pelletier Productions, a full five-hour open bar, custom-designed cake, a variety of dinner options including
a six-course meal, buffet or stations, even a cocktail party in the garden, the ballroom or the chapel. Best of all, they offer professional consultants to assist in the planning. Mahan’s can accommodate groups as small as 90 and as large as 325. “If you’re looking for a stress-free ceremony and reception site we are happy to help you coordinate your entire wedding, saving you the extra expense of a wedding planner,” staff say. Mahan’s Lakeview Fine Catering is located at 15 Grilley Road, Wolcott. (203) 879-9363 or MahansCatering.com. Also in town is Krystal Gardens, which can seat up to 300 or accommodate up to 500 in
a standing ceremony. Scenic gardens with a bridge and gazebo make it an ideal setting for outdoor ceremonies and two banquet halls are exquisite for indoor receptions. Couples are offered a personal consultant for assistance as well. Krystal Gardens is located at 1146 Spindle Hill Road, Wolcott. (203)-879-4050 or KrystalGardensCatering.com. In nearby Bristol is a site that can provide not only a sparkling party but also overnight accomodations for guests. That’s the Doubletree by Hilton, which hosts receptions for up to 350 people and has 141 guest rooms and suites available. They
offer indoor and outdoor ceremony and reception areas that are wheelchair-accessible as well as an on-site wedding consultant. “We have meticulously considered every detail of your DoubleTree Bristol wedding,” Lynn Dell, general manager, says. “Our 141 brand new guest rooms and suites, our two critically acclaimed restaurants, our superb event venues, our award winning Chef ’s commitment to innovative fresh cuisine, and our superior guest service allow us to serve all the needs of your wedding celebration to perfection.” The Oaks Ballroom at DoubleTree by Hilton is located at 42 Century Drive, Bristol. Bridal veil is a crowning touch Origins of this wedding accessory is unkown, but remains a staple.
“Veils may be simple or heavily accented. Some may have pearls, crystals or rhinestones sprinkled throughout.”
By TRESA ERICKSON CREATIVE OUTLET
There are many theories as to the origins of bridal veils. Some say the practice started in ancient Rome to ward off evil spirits. Some say the practice grew out of the custom of arranged marriages. The bride was veiled until the vows were done to prevent the groom from backing out of the arrangement because of her looks. Some say the practice was a sign of a bride’s submissiveness and willingness to obey her husband. Whatever the origins, veils have long been part of the bridal attire, and like most things, they have changed over the years.
Wedding veils have long been a part of the traditional attire for brides.
While some brides today choose not to wear a veil, others do, and the length and style may vary. Common lengths include shoulder length,

Groom’s showers can be formal or informal By TRESA ERICKSON CREATIVE OUTLET
Bridal showers are as popular as ever. It’s a chance for brides to get together with family and friends and to learn more about their soon-to-be in-laws. Couples showers are just as popular, with bride and groom both in attendance. And then there are groom’s showers, specifically geared to the man of the hour. Many grooms today are opting for a groom’s shower instead of a bachelor party. Anyone can host a groom’s shower — the best man, the groom’s brother, the groom’s best friend. As with any shower, planning a groom’s shower takes time. There are guest lists to make and invitations to extend. There are themes to consider and venues to determine. There are activities to select and menus to prepare. All of the choices made, of course, should reflect the groom’s tastes and wishes. Groom’s showers can be as formal or informal as you like. You can get together with some of the groom’s pals and check out a local game or take in a few rounds of golf. You can have a backyard barbecue and invite everyone the groom knows. Guest lists should include the groom’s family, friends and members of the wedding party as well as the bride’s family. Women may or may not be invited per the groom’s wishes.
Invitations may occur by phone, email or mail. Generally, the more formal the gathering, the more formal the invitations should be. A large wine tasting at a local vinery, for example, might call for printed invitations sent by U.S.

mail, whereas a small gathering at a local pub might require just a few phone calls. Themes and activities can run the gamut, and again, should reflect the groom’s tastes and wishes. If the groom enjoys the great outdoors, then a campout at a
nearby park with boating and fishing might do the trick. If the groom likes to bowl, then a night out bowling with the guys might be ideal. You can even have the party at someone’s home in front of the big game or around the poker table. And if you just want to hang out, there are all kinds of ideas for games for a groom’s shower. What party would be complete without good food? Food is essential to a groom’s shower, and it can be as simple as burgers and fries or pizza and breadsticks. You can go out to a restaurant or have a meal catered. The same goes with the decorations. You can go all out or forget them altogether depending upon the venue. If you plan to host a groom’s shower at a baseball game, you might have nothing more to do than to reserve some good seats and arrange for some good food.
Many grooms are opting for a shower rather than the bachelor’s party.

Get to know your flower lingo By DORIS A. BLACK CREATIVE OUTLET
Whether you carry a single calla lily or a bouquet of white roses, the flowers you choose for your wedding should serve as a symbol of your love. They should be beautiful and dramatic. Before choosing a florist, do some homework and learn the lingo. Bridal bouquets are typically designed in one of four basic shapes: ∎ Cascade, in which the flowers fall forward in a pendulous manner. ∎ Nosegay, the most common choice, in which the flowers form a large, round, upright shape with the stems forming a cone. ∎ Asymmetrical, a very informal design composed of a collection of blooms in an irregular shape. ∎ Pomander, a ball of blooms carried by a loop of a ribbon, making a lovely accessory for flower girls. No matter which style of bouquet you choose, the flowers may be wired, in which a florist
A bride holds a bouquet of roses as a symbol of her love.
wire is inserted into the upper portion of the flowers and the lower portions of the stems are removed, or hand-tied, in which the whole stems remain and are tied or taped together. Hand-tied bouquets are heavier than wired and generally are not as comfortable to hold. For a formal wedding ceremony, the bride traditionally carries an ele-
gant all-white bouquet composed of either one type of flower or two or three different types. Most commonly used are roses, tulips, peonies, hydrangeas, orchids, calla lilies or gardenias. For a less formal ceremony, bouquets might contain a mixture of colorful blooms selected to enhance the bride and complement the color scheme of
the wedding party. When choosing the flowers for your bouquet, consider the type of ceremony planned, the location of the ceremony and the style of dress you will be wearing. For example, a formal church wedding requires a more formal bouquet than an informal mountaintop wedding. An elegant ballroom gown should be complemented by a bouquet of proper proportions. This rule applies to all bridal gowns. The bridal bouquet should never outshine the gown. The bouquet should also be proportional to the bride’s height. A cascading bouquet may be more appropriate to a tall bride than to one of smaller stature. Bridesmaid’s bouquets are typically smaller than the bride’s bouquet. They may match in color but should not be identical. A good florist will vary the bridesmaid’s bouquets slightly. The groom’s boutonniere will correspond to the bride’s bouquet and the groomsmen to the bridesmaids. Again they should
vary slightly so as to not look repetitive. Corsages have been traditional favorites for mothers of the bride and groom, but small nosegays are also appropriate. Flowers to enhance the ceremony can be as simple or elaborate as your budget allows. Traditionally for a church ceremony there are altarpieces, aisle arrangements, door decorations and candelabra decorations. Before ordering, find out what your church allows for wedding flowers. Some have strict guidelines. For daytime ceremonies, almost any color combination is magnificent, but for an evening ceremony, an all-white altarpiece really stands out. If you are tight on funds, you may prefer to keep ceremony florals to a minimum and put the bulk of your floral budget into flowers for the reception, where you’ll be spending the most time. Table centerpieces are the norm at receptions with the largest arrangement at the head table.

You received an invitation to a coworker’s wedding, and now the hunt is on for the perfect gift. You haven’t been to a wedding in years, so you could really use a refresher course on shopping for wedding gifts. Before you step foot into any shop, read the invitation thoroughly. The couple may have requested no gifts. You should abide by their wishes and forgo buying them a gift. If you cannot do that and must absolutely give them a gift, consider making a donation to charity in their names or buying them something small but tasteful.Couples accepting wedding gifts may have registered for gifts at various places and noted that on the invitation. This should make it easy for you to find out what they would like as a wedding gift. If there is nothing listed on the invitation about a gift registry, then you may want to contact someone close to the couple and find out if they have set up one.

Finding a wedding photographer METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS
Long after the final toast has been made or the last couple has left the dance floor, wedding photos will help couples relive the wonderful memories of their ceremonies and receptions. Wedding photographers realize the important role photography plays in a wedding. Photos are how couples document their nuptials, and the right photographer can make all the difference. The following tips can help guarantee a successful wedding shoot and beautiful photos to recall the best moments of the day. ∎ Seek referrals. There are scores of wedding photographers, and some are better than others. Word of mouth from other couples can help. Referrals can offer insight into a photographer’s personality and his or her abilities to work with the wedding party and guests throughout the day. ∎ Communication is key. An important component of wedding photography actually starts well before the wedding day. The way a photographer communicates with you about your wishes and desired shots is very important, as this is when to discuss specific shots you want taken during the ceremony, such as whether the bride wants to be seen and pose with the groom prior to tying the knot. In addition, this is a great time for the photog-

rapher to get familiar with each venue’s rules regarding vendors. ∎ Choose a photographer who is confident and firm. A good photographer will be able to direct photo subjects and get everyone to participate and in line. Brides and grooms likely won’t want to handle such tasks on their own, so a confident and firm yet cordial photographer can be an invaluable asset. ∎ Prepare a shoot list. Meet with
the photographer before the wedding and provide a list of all the shots you absolutely need to get. This way the photographer can plan for these as well as capture the candid moments throughout the day. ∎ Discuss a backup plan with the photographer. Mishaps happen, even on the most carefully planned wedding day. Discuss what the photographer does to safeguard your digital photo files. Are they backed-
up to a cloud or a secured offsite server? Does the photographer bring along a second camera in case the primary one has a malfunction? What happens if he or she is ill on the day of the wedding? How is a replacement chosen? Understanding how the photographer adapts to unforseen situations can make you feel more confident in choosing one photographer instead of another. The camera gear should also have adequate memory to store all of the photos, and a few backup batteries can’t hurt, either. ∎ Consider hiring a photographer’s assistant or second shooter. The photographer is less likely to miss a shot or fail to capture various perspectives of the wedding if he or she works with a partner. ∎ Know what each package includes. The photographer should clearly spell out which items and services are included as part of the contract. There should be no surprises when it’s time to pay the balance of the photographer’s fees, so go over each itemized detail to be sure the package in your contract is the one you really want.

Serve good wine CREATIVE OUTLET
Wine glasses are set for the Bride and Groom.
Brides and grooms want their big day to be special for them and their guests. One way to make it special is to serve good wine. You taste and select the food and the cake for your wedding, so why shouldn’t you do the same with the wine? Before you start shopping for wine, you need to check with the venue where your reception will be held and make sure they allow alcohol on the premises. If so, the number and types of wine
available will depend upon where you live. If you live in an area with several vineyards, you will probably have more choices. When selecting wine for your reception, you need to take several factors into consideration, including the preferences of your guests, the time and length of your reception, the type of food served, and most importantly, your budget. The guests you invite to your reception will play an important part in your decision. How many actually drink wine? Do they enjoy drinking a glass or two,
or do they just sip enough to be social? Do they prefer red, white or dessert wine? Would most of them be happier with beer? Would they care if you didn’t serve any wine? Answering these questions will give you some idea as to what kind of and how much wine to order. The time of year and day you are having the reception can also influence the wine you serve. In the summer at an outdoor reception, you will want to keep guests cool and serve lighter, refreshing wine.

How to find right wedding vendors METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS
Weddings are a careful balance of many elements that culminate on one special day. Making all of the components of a wedding come together seemlessly requires a well organized bride and groom and the cooperation of professional wedding vendors who understand their unique roles. Vendors, including florists, transportation companies, musicians, and dressmakers are essential to a successful wedding. Competent wedding vendors will remove much of the worry and work from a couple’s shoulders. But not every couple ends up with top-notch wedding vendors. Research, planning and verifying references are some ways to ensure your vendors make your wedding day that much more enjoyable. ∎ Seek recommendations from trusted friends and family members. Talk to friends and family members whose insight you value about which wedding vendors they used. If you attend a wedding or another party and find the flowers or the music particularly
wedding vendors you can contact. A wedding planner wants the job to get done right and efficiently, and many wedding planners have already vetted and verified certain vendors as quality workers. ∎ Always ask for references and don’t ignore them. Busy wedding vendors should provide you with a list of names of satisfied customers. Talk with couples who used the vendors’ services in the past and ask the questions that are most important to your decision-making process. Unbiased feedback also may be available through online review sites, but direct contact with references may make you feel more comfortable. If a vendor fails to provide references, this should raise suspicions about the person’s reliability. ∎ Deposits should be a fraction of the total price. Avoid wedding
vendors who insist on hefty deposits. A deposit is a good-faith agreement to hold the date of the wedding, and it should be a small percentage of the overall cost of the services. ∎ Do not pay balances too far in advance. Many wedding vendors require the balance be paid on the day of the wedding or shortly before. Good vendors realize couples will

not want to pay the tally until they have received the products or services they signed up for. A photographer may ask for the final payment when albums are delivered. The exception may be a caterer or reception site that needs the funds to order food and beverages a few weeks in advance. Paying off a vendor too early means you run the risk of that vendor having your money and then not coming through on the wedding day. It’s difficult to track down a person for a refund, plus you’re left with finding a replacement at the last minute.
