Tradition of throwing rice There are many traditions for weddings that can be traced back thousands of years to early civilization. One enduring tradition is to throw rice at the newly betrothed. For the safety of birds and other animal life, rice has been switched to birdseed in recent times. Throwing rice remains a timeless tradition that many couples still enjoy. Everyone attending the wedding gets to participate in throwing rice, or whatever is being used in lieu of rice, be it birdseed, confetti or even bubbles. Couples can even borrow from traditions in other countries. In France, people throw wheat, a symbol of bounty, after the ceremony. Italians toss candy and sugared nuts over couples, for sweetness in marriage. Rice was traditionally used to symbolize fertility and prosperity. Wheat was also used in ancient wedding ceremonies for the same reasons. When guests threw rice at the bride and groom at a wedding, they were symbolically wishing them a lifetime full of children and good fortune. Some cultures even ate a meal of rice before the wedding to guarantee further prosperity. Different cultures have long harbored different perspectives on throwing rice. Some even believed it fed the evil spirits that, though uninvited, crashed the wedding. It was thought that well-fed spirits would not wreak havoc on the happy day.

Create the wedding of your dreams while cutting costs

CORRESPONDENT

A fairy tale wedding can quickly turn into a horror story once the costs of planning your big day starts to add up. But the bride-inthe-know can steer clear of those budget nightmares and still create the wedding of her dreams. Expert wedding planner Jan Sweeney of Day to Remember Events in West Hartford suggests brides look for a venue that can play host to both the wedding ceremony and the reception. For the bride on a budget, this will eliminate having to pay for two site fees, as well as cutting out costs of transporting the bridal party from the ceremony to the reception. “This becomes cost effective on many levels without compromising elegance and sophistication,” Sweeney says. “Often guests will be invited to a smaller outdoor or less formal setting. This usually provides a feeling of a more personalized ceremony.” Disc jockey Mike Connolly of Sound Productions in

Southington agrees. In business for more than 20 years, Connolly says he sees more couples having the ceremony and reception at one location. “These days with the number of older couples, second marriages, and mixed faith marriages, I think people are keeping it simple and steering clear of the big church weddings,” according to Connolly. This allows the couple to save on music costs. As the disc jockey is already on location, he is available to provide music for the ceremony as well as the reception afterwards. To save on expenses but not sacrifice style, look at ordering invitations, wedding programs and save-the-date cards online. Sweeney advises brides on a budget to find a reputable online company that can guide you stepby-step via their website to create a personalized, elegant product for less. The traditional wedding cake can also take a big bite of any wedding budget. One idea to consider is for brides to have the

elaborate cake of her dreams but just on a smaller scale. “Order a traditional wedding cake for pictures and cake cutting. Meanwhile have a sheet cake made of the same flavor of cake and filling,” Sweeney advises. “Serve this, in addition to the traditional cake. A sheet cake requires minimal decorating and is not as labor intensive, which usually will cut costs significantly rather than serving the traditional wedding cake to the entire room.” To save even more money on a wedding cake, John Regina from Events Party and Tent Rental in Plantsville suggests renting a fake cake for pictures then serving guests from a sheet cake. With his rental cakes starting at $50, Regina says this is a huge saving that means couples can still enjoy the elegant look of a traditional wedding cake. “We can even have sections made up with real cake to enable the bride and groom to still capture photos of the traditional cake cutting but then the cake is taken away and no one knows the difference,” he

Unique ideas for the perfect wedding on a budget Continued from Page 5

Kerri Gorr, floral designer at Nyren’s of New England in Southington, suggests using hydrangeas. They are available year-round, create a heavy, visual element and go a long way to make the ordinary really outstanding. Within arrangements, strategically place five to seven more costly flowers among cheaper ones and add inexpensive lily grass or hanging amaranths to give movement and added dimension. This creates a design rich in texture, movement and color yet is still mindful of cost. Another simple way to make a big visual impact is to use natural elements, Gorr says. Blooming branches for spring or white branches for winter laden with sparkles and glittering gems create visual height and an elegant feel without going overboard on price. Photography can be another huge part of a couple’s budget. Without skimping on the quality or style of photography, a bride and groom should try to find a photographer that will sell the negatives and rights to their wedding day photos. This allows the bride and groom to order custom prints and photo book albums at a much cheaper rate without compromising on quality. Wedding favors can be a thoughtful way of saying thank you to your guests. But they can also end up as expensive dust collectors. That’s

Did You Know?

Though it’s difficult to call it official, the 2004 wedding of Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, is considered the most expensive wedding in history. With a final tab of $60 million, the wedding included invitations mailed in silver boxes, rooms at a five-star Paris hotel and performances by pop singer Kylie Minogue. That final price tag dwarfs another famously expensive wedding, that of British soccer star Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen McLoughlin. The Manchester United star reportedly spent $8 million on their nuptials, which included a chartered flight for friends to Genoa for a masked ball on a yacht valued at well over $100 million. Americans might recall a more recent and extravagant wedding, that of former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, whose 2010 wedding reportedly cost between $3 to 5 million. A similar price tag was given to Beatles legend Paul McCartney in 2002 when he married former model Heather Mills. Unfortunately, that cost did not guarantee marital bliss, as the couple separated in 2006, eventually divorcing in 2008.

why a lot of brides opt for a food item to say thank you. Christina’s Gourmet Cookies in Southington offers brides personalized edible alternative. With 30 varieties to choose from owner Christina Wherry says she will sit down with the bridal couple to customize any of her cookies to fit any color, theme, style or budget. This personal touch is preferred, according to Sweeney, who suggests filling canning jars with layers of ingredients for a favorite family cookie recipe as an inexpensive and more heartfelt gesture. Favors can also double up as place cards by putting the guest name and table number on the tag. “No one will even notice you made this decision to save money. They will think this was a creative way for you to direct your guests to their tables,” Sweeney says. While hiring a wedding planner on a budget may seem like an oxymoron, Sweeney, who has a thriving event planning business, says it can save a bride and groom a lot of costly Liz Newberg mistakes. Wedding professionals reflect on their memories of unusual weddings By LIZ NEWBERG CORRESPONDENT

Away Spay and Wellness Center in Southington really knew how to put the “party” in bridal party, according to owner Lindsey Dellavecchia. She remembers this bride and her attendants arriving for their mani/ pedis pulling a cooler on wheels packed with alcohol.

■ Another disappearing ring fiasco happened at From Tips to Toes Day Spa in Southington when a bridal party was getting manicures. Owner Elyna Perillo recalls the time when a bride washed her hands, dried them and moments later realized that her diamond engagement ring was gone. For more than an hour the entire salon staff was frantic trying to find the ring, emptying every wastebasket and overturning every towel until finally they heard a sudden “klink” and the ring was found. “We can laugh about it now, but at the time we all had our hearts in our throats,” Perillo says.

asked the events manager if they could make a kangaroo ice sculpture. As this was the only decision in the entire wedding that her groom made, Wendy thought it was a good way to really personalize their reception. “The guy didn’t really want to say no,” Wendy remembers. “He was a little hesitant but he agreed he could do a kangaroo sculpture. I think he thought Zach was a little crazy too.” However, when the reception got going and they started to enjoy an amazing spread of fabulous appetizers and drinks, guests were intrigued by something. “Everybody kept asking me ‘what’s up with the squirrel ice sculpture’?” Wendy laughs. The sculptor obviously wasn’t familiar with kangaroos.

wedding day that did put a smile on some faces. He and his crew had set up for a reception for 200 people under a tent. “It was the most beautiful day for an outdoor wedding. The couple decided not to have sides on the tent because it was such a great day. Just as the ceremony finished all of a sudden, we could see the clouds come rolling in,” Tropea remembers. “Torrential rain comes pouring down for the rest of the night.” But the storm didn’t put a damper on the evening. “There were a lot of happy people there – guys at least. All the wait staff had white shirts on and they were soaked. Imagine a wet t-shirt contest. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.” They say every cloud has a silver lining.

An innovative way to help a bride and groom save on their big day is to consider eliminating the traditional wedding cake and floral centerpieces. For the forward-thinking and budget-minded couple, replace expensive floral centerpieces with a beautifully decorated ornate work of edible art: an 8-inch cake covered in fondant adorned with fresh flowers. Not only will this save hundreds of dollars but it becomes a unique wow factor at the center of each table and something guests will remember well after the wedding is over.

Wedding trends: From fashion to food

David Tutera, celebrity wedding planner and host of WE tv’s “My Fair wedding with David Tutera” shares some of the trends in weddings this year. Decor: Many brides are looking for unique juxtaposition within the room by pairing modern floral designs with traditional settings. Color: Metallics are a color trend on the rise. Expect to see them everywhere from linens to floral vessels and from table decor to bridal bouquet accents. metallics are a luxurious touch

that also adds a bit of luminous texture. Fashion: The concept of a “change out dress,” where a bride slips into a party dress for the reception, will appear more often. Brides love this option as it allows them to show off two different looks within the night, as well as giving them more freedon to move and dance that a long and binding bridal gown does not offer. Food: More couples are skipping the traditional cake and instead opting for dessert stations with a selection of small

gourmet treats. Another unique idea is serving two plated desserts at a table and alternating them, one for every other guest, which promotes sharing and interaction. Reception: The “after party” where a couple will invite all, or a select few of their guests to continue their celebration into the night in a more relaxed setting. with all the planning and anticipation that goes into a wedding, it’s no wonder why couples choose an after-party as a way of extending their big day.
