Festival salutes a ‘Hometown Hero’ STAFF REPORT
BRISTOL — From being an usher at St. Joseph Church to championing a new Civil War monument, Tom LaPorte has contributed to many aspects of community life during his six decades in Bristol. On Saturday, the Mum Festival will salute LaPorte’s civic activism. He will be recognized as the 2012 Hometown Hero and the next day will serve as marshal of
the Mum Parade. The Bronx-born LaPorte becomes the fourth Hometown Hero. The festival honored Iraq war veteran Matt Lavoie in 2010 and last year recognized David Carello and his son Matt, both of whom have served overseas. A local history buff, LaPorte has been an eyewitness to much of the Mum City’s history, having moved here in 1951. A product of local schools, he found work
at New Departure and remained with the automotive manufacturer until his retirement in 1992. He has seen the city make the difficult transition from an industrial center to a largely bedroom community and sports communications hub. He also has given much of his time to Bristol Hospital, where he has been a hospice volunteer. LaPorte is vice president of the Memorial Military Museum, a
member of the board of directors of the Bristol Historical Society, and a member of Team Bristol — a non-profit group that hosts local events such as the celebration of the city’s 225th anniversary in 2011. “I hold Tom in greatest respect, said Bob Montgomery, city historian and a member of Team Bristol. “I have worked with him on a number of activities and he Tom LaPorte is a pleasure to work with.
