Awards highlight the best in business By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
NEWINGTON — If Newington businesses had their own holiday, it would be the night of the annual Best of Newington Awards. The ceremony was held recently in conjunction with the Newington Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner at Indian Hill Country Club. More than 170 people attended, and almost 50 companies were honored. “We definitely had a good turnout this year,” said Gail Whitney, Volume 55, No. 23

executive director of the Chamber. In the competition’s second year, “Best” ballots were accepted by mail, at the Chamber office, and online all spring. More than 400 came in online alone. The top three finalists in each category were invited to the recent awards ceremony, where winners were announced. “That night it seemed like everybody was anticipating who was going to win, and people were surprised, happy and sad when we announced the winners,” said Deanna Reney, event chairperson. Game cards with lists of the top three finalists in each category were handed out, and people were asked to highlight who they thought won. PET OF THE WEEK: TONY SPECIAL TO THE TOWN CRIER
Tony is a 5-year-old shih tzu mix and he is totally blind. But for the right home with special needs dog experience, Tony will acclimate nicely. Tony’s home can be a single-family house with condos or apartments considered. Most importantly, Tony must have a quiet and predictable environment, so an adult household would likely be best. Tony has not had much experience with cats or dogs but he is willing to consider sharing his home with a gentle, furry friend. This is a great dog, relaxed and calm. Perhaps you already have a dog that needs a compan-
ion to care for, and in the end Tony will give back to the family 100 percent! Remember, the Connecticut Humane Society has no time limits for adoption. Inquiries for adoption should be made at the Connecticut Humane Society located at 701 Russell Road in Newington, or by calling (860) 594-4500 or toll free at 1-800-452-0114. The Connecticut Humane Society is a private organization with branch shelters in Waterford and Westport. We all come together and do our part.” The Chamber also selected Turnpike Motors as Business of the Year. The Youth Service Award was presented to Sandy Pilz, a teacher at Martin Kellogg Middle School and organizer of the town’s Annual Super HoopLA Tournament, which benefits scholarships for Newington High School seniors. The Public Service Award was presented to former state Rep. Sandy Nafis, a longtime town volunteer. “Best” winners were presented with glass trophies, but being in the limelight is the real prize, according to Reney. “Going into the third year of this, I think more people are realizing what the competition can do

Girl Scouts recognized for community service efforts
Agnes. “They teach the girls how to take care of their babies, get started as parents.” Jordan Wiggins worked with Interval House, a safe haven and advocate for victims of domestic violence in Greater Hartford. She collected donations for the families who live at the center. “I wanted to pass along the message that there is support and help out there for all the victims,” Wiggins said of her work. Newington’s former state Rep. Sandy Nafis encouraged the Scouts to continue their community service, both in and outside of Girl Scouts. “You are starting at this level, but there’s so much you can do,” said the lifelong Newington resident, who was once a Girl Scout herself and later joined the Newington Junior Women’s Club, which also does charitable outreach. After 16 years in the General Assembly, Nafis retired in 2014. She told the girls Monday she was relieved to spend the evening celebrating with them, rather than in legislative session. “I’m very happy to be here tonight to share this special night with you,” Nafis said.

easily find what they need. Even after finishing, the girls asked their leaders if they could stay longer to make labels for each section. It’s this kind of dedication, their leaders said, that shows good character. To raise awareness and get the community involved, the troop organized Clothes for Kids Day at the end of April. Scouts from across town were invited, and the girls used fun games to teach others about the work they did and the importance of the closet. “We’re delighted and honored to stand here among a group of kind and talented girls,” Walker said Monday. Two Scouts achieved their Silver Awards this year, repre-
senting Troop 10511. These scouts completed projects outside of town with organizations that serve a regional need. To reach their goal, they had to put in more than 50 hours of community service. Camryn Williams worked with the St. Agnes Home in West
Hartford, which provides residential care and support services for pregnant and parenting teens. She collected diapers and other infant supplies for the home. “It could be anybody in this situation; this is a safe haven Erica Schmitt can be reached at for them,” Troop Leader Coleen (860) 801-5097, or eschmitt@ Kelly said of those served at St. newbritainherald.com.

NEWINGTON — What one person can achieve can be surpassed by a team, and when a whole community gets involved, the impact is far greater. Girl Scouts in Newington learned this lesson as they worked toward their Silver and Bronze Awards this year. More than a dozen girls were presented with their awards Monday night at the Scouts’ Annual Recognition Ceremony in Newington Town Hall. To earn a bronze pin, Scouts must complete 20 hours of community service — a requirement the girls in Troop 10505 far surpassed, according to their leaders. This group took on the Newington Human Services Department’s Clothing Closet as part of its Bronze Award project. Human Services helps Newington families with financial difficulties through its Food Bank, back-to-school supplies and holiday food distributions. While many donations come in for these programs, the department’s clothing closet can sometimes be forgotten. When the troop learned of this, they decided to make it their mission to raise awareness and transform the closet. “It’s one thing to take notice, but it’s different to stand up and take action,” said Troop Leader Crestina Walker, who took the opportunity to teach the girls about “the power of one, the power of team and the power of community.” They started by collecting gently used clothing donations from family and friends. As a team, they organized, sorted and hung all of the clothes in the donation room, so people could more

Museum to offer historic garden tours June 28 SPECIAL TO THE TOWN CRIER
WETHERSFIELD — The public is invited to view a small piece of the world as it was seen through the eyes of Amy Cogswell, one of the first female landscape architects in the United States and designer of the Colonial Revival Garden at the Webb-Deane-Stevens (WDS) Museum. On Saturday, June 28, from noon to 4 p.m., the WDS Colonial Revival Garden will be one of 14 historic gardens highlighted for Connecticut Historic Gardens Day. Professionally designed gardens were uncommon in the early 20th century, and female landscape architects were extremely rare in a field that was traditionally dominated by men. Cogswell attended the first American institution for women studying in her field, the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture, Gardening and Horticulture for Women, in Groton, Mass. She graduated in 1916 and served as the school’s headmistress until 1923. When hired by the Connecticut Society of Colonial Dames in 1919, Cogswell’s plans for the Webb House’s garden included classical elements, quaint arbors and a wide assortment of the “old fashioned” flowers that were popular
in the early 1900s. In celebration of Connecticut Historic Gardens Day, the WDS garden guides will give free tours of the garden and discuss Cogswell’s vision for the space. There will be a new PowerPoint display, “A Year in the Cogswell Garden,” and refreshments will be served. Optional WDS Museum house tours will be offered at a discount for the day, and Elizabeth O’Brien will be on site with her rare and centuries-old art of creating elegant, handcrafted paper silhouettes for $25 per seating. Star Wars and Make-A-Wish clubs join forces By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
NEWINGTON — The Force is strong at John Wallace Middle School, where young Jedi Knights collaborated recently to raise money for a special cause. The school’s Star Wars Night was held on May 4, a date known by fans of Hollywood’s biggest franchise as the official Star Wars Day. Fans greet each other happily with “May the fourth be with you,” a play on the famous line, “May the force be with you.” John Wallace’s Star Wars Club joined forces with the school’s Make-A-Wish Club that night to host a fun event for the entire school community. What they created using The Force was a leap toward victory over the Evil Empire. In the words of Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi, “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all
living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.” This energy field was inside the school that night, as music from the famous trilogy’s soundtrack set the mood for a bean bag toss, bottle throw and coin toss. There was also a Death Star piñata and a costume contest. Teachers and students sided with either the Empire or the Rebel Alliance, dressing as their favorite characters. As “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” played in the auditorium, people played PlayStation 2 Pod Racing. Teacher Scott Pestka, who leads the Culinary Arts Club at Newington High School, created Star Wars-themed recipes to feed the crowd and brought four character cakes. Students ran each station, but were joined by surprise guests from the 501st Legion, a charitable Star Wars group named after Darth Vader’s private army and

organized by Al Carbone, a John Wallace parent. “It was quite a thrill,” said Paul Salonia, a math teacher at the school who started the club earlier this year. “The event started off as an idea of celebrating our love of Star Wars,” Salonia continued. “Once we teamed up with Make-
A-Wish Club, the event took on a higher purpose of altruism and community involvement.” More than 100 people participated, and 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the school’s Make-A-Wish Club. The club collects donations from the community to help
grant the wishes of local children who are suffering from terminal illnesses. “We usually grant one to three wishes per school year,” said Jess Morin, an eighth-grade science teacher who has run the club for the last seven years. Star Wars Night went specifically to help a boy named Daniel, a senior in high school with a rare blood disorder. Daniel’s wish is to go RV camping in Alaska. It will be granted this Saturday at Goldburgers in Newington, where restaurant owners are donating their facility and catering a private party for Daniel, his family and 25 guests. The family will be leaving at the end of June for Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, where they will camp in an RV, see wildlife, go fishing and ride ATVs. It looks like Daniel got his wish, and the Jedi Knights have restored freedom to the galaxy.
Letter: Castelle losing touch with Newington residents To the Editor: Clarke Castelle is a person that I like and have respect for and who loves this town, but his most recent letter to the editor has proven that he has lost touch with the residents of Newington. When the residents spoke against building the new Town Hall at the Mill Pond Park location, the majority of residents came out against the project
immediately. Clarke, you and others were told many times to pull the referendum, but none of you listened and the referendum ended in a resounding defeat. Clarke called TP&Z’s vote on H.B. 6851 a “slap in the face,” our procedure in calling for the vote illegal and that the vote violated Roberts Rules (I say “our” as I am a commissioner on the TP&Z). I remember at a recent Town

Council meeting when the town manager’s raise was voted down when Democratic Council member Beth McDonald abstained from voting, giving the Republican Party all they needed to deny the raise. I mention it because at the following Town Council meeting the raise was brought back by Mayor Woods. When this procedure was questioned under
Roberts Rules by Councilor Beth DelBuono, Woods stated that he checked with the town attorney and Roberts Rules DO NOT APPLY and are SUPERSEDED by Town Rules. A second vote was taken, which led to a heated debate and our town manager getting his raise when Counselor McDonald flipped her previous abstention to a “yes” vote. Clarke, I ask you, do
you get to choose when Roberts Rules apply? So Clarke, what we did on TP&Z was to listen to our residents who attended our meetings — and if you attended any of our meetings, you would know this. Oh and the “slap in the face” as you call it is our residents fighting back! Bob Serra Sr. Commissioner TP&Z

Classic cars get cruising to downtown Newington By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
NEWINGTON — Summer will poke its head out in downtown Newington next Thursday, June 11, at one of the season’s first car shows in the area. The Newington Chamber of Commerce’s 9th Annual Cruising Newington virtually takes over the center of town, with over 250 antique and new cars expected. The show is one of several annual events the Newington Chamber of Commerce hosts for the community, but it’s also a boon for businesses in the area. “I love it because each car has one or two or more people in it and that’s a lot of extra people coming to downtown Newington,” said Terri Gogluicci, Chamber president. “It’s great for the exposure,” she added. “The hope is when people
are done at the show they’ll stay and eat somewhere downtown or visit one of our shops.” The Connecticut Street Legends are hosting the competition itself, which draws in every brand of candy-painted car and the aficionados who love them. Club members not only have the privilege of parking the entrants, but they also get to award their favorites. Newington Mayor Stephen Woods and a Chamber representative will also each be giving out one of a dozen awards. Since the event began in 2006, it has grown so large that Market Square closes to traffic and ends up crawling with more than 1,000 spectators. This is the first time there will be no cutoff year for show entrants. Whether it’s a domestic or foreign classic, street rod, custom, antique, new or vintage muscle car, all are

welcome. “It’s usually a really warm, summery evening you want to spend outside,” said Gogluicci. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 200 show cars, and clubs are encouraged to arrive together so their members can park together. Cars are invited to line up at 4:30 p.m. The rain dates will be June 18 or June 25.
