Town forgives $12K of Indian Hill debt By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER

NEWINGTON — In an effort to help Indian Hill Country Club pay off its debt, elected officials recently forgave $12,000 of the club’s back rent. The Town Council voted along party lines at their last meeting, with Democrats in favor of the new contract, effective until next June. Town Attorney Peter Boorman recommended the $12,000 back Volume 55, No. 34

rent reduction nearly one year after the town forgave an additional $15,000 the club was unable to pay. He told councilors Indian Hill stopped paying its rent in 2013 but has since resumed, and now it’s doing its best to pay back the debt. However, revenue at the course is down. “Membership has decreased; rounds of golf continue to decrease and golf course value may have decreased,” Boorman See INDIAN, Page 2

said, adding that the agreement would ensure the course is properly maintained as the two parties devise a long-term solution to the club’s financial woes. “The most significant part of this asset is the golf course itself, and we must take the necessary steps to protect that asset as we explore additional options this year as to how we will model it,” he said. Steps taken as part of the agreement are intended to increase play. Nonmember town residents, for example, will now be permitted to play on Saturday afternoons. A Newington Town Employee League will also be formed.

Last year, the club set a goal to increase membership by 20 and they exceeded that with 75 new members, according to Boorman. The additional benefits to members and residents that are spelled out in the agreement will continue to help their situation, he said. “The old model of the country club environment doesn’t work,” Boorman said. “What they think will work is a collaboration with the town, reaching out to residents and eliminating the attitude of exclusivity.” Republicans opposed the agreement, saying the club should be held responsible for its debt. “If I can’t meet my mortgage I wouldn’t be forgiven $27,000,”

State Rep. Byron reflects on first year in office By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER

NEWINGTON — State Rep. Gary Byron, R-Newington, is hoping to continue building a strong relationship with the public. A guest of honor at the Newington Rotary Club Wednesday afternoon, Byron reflected on his first year in office and invited citizens to reach out to him at anytime. “I never lose sight of the fact that it’s an absolute privilege for me to be there, representing a very diverse community such as Newington,” he said of his position in the state House of Representatives. Byron was a member of the human services, housing and environmental committees this past year. He said his favorite was human services, which handles matters of social services and protects the disabled. “It really impacted my life,” Byron said. “I left meetings crying after listening to the testimony of our most vulnerable population. If there’s anything I can do to help them, I want to be a part of it.” Issues debated by the envi-

ronmental committee varied in nature, he told Rotarians. They discussed everything from solar energy to pets and recycling. A bill eliminating the state’s fivecent return for cans and bottles was one hot topic, although it did not come up for vote. “When that law came out in the early 80s we didn’t have single-stream recycling yet, and now people just aren’t bringing back cans like they used to,” explained Byron, who asked the group their positions on the issue. Rotarian Dave Marsden said he sees a handful of people collecting cans daily near his office

on Fenn Road. Doing away with bottle return could pose a problem to them and others, he pointed out. “A lot of people rely on those few extra dollars they’re going to get,” Marsden said. Another matter the committee discussed was banning the use of plastic bags in grocery and wholesale stores. This bill also died in committee. Byron encouraged people to reach out to him about issues that are important to them, especially during the legislature’s off season. “I don’t have all the answers, so if you are experienced in an issue come talk to me,” he said. “Also do so if there’s a concern, something I can help with or something you’ve always wanted to know.” Byron and state Sen. Paul Doyle will be presenting on “The First 240 Days” at the Newington Kiwanis Club’s speaker meeting Monday, Aug. 31, at Paradise Pizza, 10 East St., New Britain. The forum is open to the public. How wonderful it must be to have the Democratic majority on the Town Council eliminate or reduce your outstanding debt with the stroke of a pen. Once again the ultra-private Indian Hill Country Club cannot pay its rent, so the Town Council forgave another $12,000 in back rent. The total debt forgiven stands at $27,000 and will undoubtedly grow. Why? What makes this private, exclusive country club so special that its rent is constantly renegotiated? Could it be that council members are also IHCC members? It would be nice for the public to know, but membership is secret. The IHCC website, which boasts “Indian Hill Country Club — Top Rated Private Golf Club in CT,” does not list its membership. It does not even inform the public as to the number of members. The website also fails to mention that the golf course is paid for by Newington taxpayers.

Newington has always referred to the golf course as a “gem” in Newington, but it is not a gem we can all enjoy. The course is only open to the public on certain days and limited hours. Town Attorney Peter Boorman blames the club’s financial woes “on a general decline in the popularity of golf.” What better time to scrap the private country club status and open the course to the general public. Clearly, the private membership cannot support Indian Hill; however, I believe the public can. Look at the Stanley Golf Course, it is a financially vibrant asset to New Britain without a hint of debt or lost revenues. A private club by the very nature of its limited membership is no longer viable. Our elected officials have a duty to the residents of Newington to make Indian Hill a profitable enterprise for the town and not another drain on our limited town budget.

New electric car charging station opens downtown SPECIAL TO THE TOWN CRIER

Electric vehicle owners have another option for recharging when visiting Newington’s town center now that its newest electric vehicle charging station is fully installed and operational. Conveniently located in the center of the town’s Constitution Square municipal parking lot, the new charging station is free to the public and has the capacity of charging two vehicles simultaneously. With no restrictions on operating hours, it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Electric vehicles typically need 1 to 4 hours to recharge. Signage added to the Constitution Square sign on Main Street will help motorists know a charging station is close by. Mayor Steve Woods praised this improvement as being beneficial to Newington because it provides direct benefit to customers, owners and employees of town center businesses who own or are thinking of buying electric vehicles. The charging station is also a unique amenity, encour-

aging electric vehicle owners to shop and eat at town center stores and restaurants. Finally, Woods said, it demonstrates Newington’s commitment to progress and green technology. Mayor Woods reminded everyone to be courteous by not parking in the designated spaces if they don’t have a vehicle to charge and promptly moving one’s vehicle once it is charged to make the charger available for others. Town Councilor Jim Marocchini, an ardent supporter of town center redevelopment from his days as chairman of the Economic Development Commission, added that this is another great example of the town’s commitment to helping local businesses. A vote by the Town Council in April authorized applying for a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection competitive grant to fund procurement and installation of the equipment. statewide network of charging stations to support its goal of putting 3.3 million electric vehicles on the road in Connecticut by 2025. Funding criteria included being located in a high-traffic area within walking distance of restaurants and retail areas. DEEP subsequently awarded

Newington $10,000, which was sufficient to avert the town incurring any out-of-pocket costs. Operating expenses are estimated at $2,000 or less per year. The charging station was installed by CT Electric Car, a subsidiary of the Newington Electric company. Manufactured

by EVSE, LLC, the charger is rated at 240 volts and 30 amps and meets or exceeds all UL and NEC safety codes, including automatically shutting off when vehicles are fully charged. It is equipped with 20-foot retractable cables that are both ADA and OSHA compliant.

adults the chance to learn important life skills. They immersed themselves in topics like social well-being, self-defense and most recently, outdoor survival. This last session took a group to Peoples State Forest in Barkhamsted. Rik Huggard, youth worker with Newington Human Services, taught them how to build a shelter, start a fire and keep themselves safe in the great outdoors, night and day. “The kids had a lot of fun,” said Bailey Ortiz, one of two teen librarians and chaperone of the recent adventure. She and fellow teen librarian Alyssa Lacross hope to work with human services again next summer in their second installation of Life Hacks. “Parents and teens were happy with it,” Lacross said of the series. “It was very busy.” Although it’s over now, teens enjoyed one last summer program Monday night. Local jewelry artist Sue Raybine showed a group how to put together custom jewelry pieces using a variety of materials. Teen programs commence again in September, beginning with the meeting of the Teen Advisory Board Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. Staff are asking teens ages 13 to 18 for their help in developing a new collection of materials and for feedback on the library’s teen offerings. Pizza will be served, and a community service hour can be earned for participating. “We’ve had it for a few years,” Ortiz said of the board. “It helps us out a lot. They give us program ideas, their likes and dislikes and tell us about any books they want to see in the collection. We’re here for them, so we want to keep whatever they want on the shelves.” Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. is Teen Gaming Afternoon for students in grades six through 12. Teens can bring their video games to play on the library’s Xbox Kinect and Wii systems, or their own game consoles to use. Board games will also be available.

The Forever Young Adult Book Club holds its first meeting Monday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 7 p.m. Young people ages 14 and up, along with adults, are welcome. “Our first meeting is going to be more of a planning meeting to see what people want,” Ortiz said. “We’ll throw some titles out there and hope patrons will bring some ideas of their own, too. We’re hoping to read a good mixture of young adult and adult books.” Teen literature has its own niche, recently growing in popularity as Hollywood translated books like “Fault in Our Stars,” “Paper Towns” and “The Hunger Games” onto the big screen. “A lot of people look down on teen literature, but there are some really excellent teen reads out there that haven’t received a lot of attention,” Ortiz said. Those who favor the genre identify with qualities of escapism and hope found between the pages, she added. The library in general can be

a haven for teens. “It’s one of those places where nothing is really expected of them,” Ortiz explained. “There are books on the shelf they can identify with and escape into, and computers and databases for them to use. We try to cover everything, from the educational to the entertainment, and it’s all free.” Teen Librarians Bailey Francis or Alyssa Lacross can be reached at (860) 665-8704 or (860) 6658706.

NEWINGTON — Bill DeMaio, newly-appointed superintendent of parks and recreation for Newington, recently served as guest speaker at a Newington Rotary luncheon held at the Indian Hill Country Club. In a dynamic and occasionally comical address to Rotarians, DeMaio — who was formerly assistant director for Newington’s Parks and Recreation before accepting a position in 1984 as head of parks and recreation in New Britain — identified projects and programs he hopes to bring to Newington. Rotarians applauded DeMaio’s return and promised support for the changes and activities he envisions for the department. DeMaio, who is visually impaired and uses his guide dog, Izaac, to get around and do

business, told Rotarians, “My disability isn’t what defines me; rather it’s my enthusiasm and passion for the town and my ability to motivate people.” It’s this motivation he is confident will inspire local businesses, schools and civic groups to work with him on a regular basis to bring about needed activities for residents of all ages, indicating that his core objective is not to make money for the town but to create excitement in making Newington a better place to live, work and play. DeMaio emphasized how diversified his department is by pointing out that its responsibilities encompass everything from creative playtime and swimming for toddlers to maintaining West Hill Cemetery on Willard Avenue. Said DeMaio amusingly, “You might say that I’m responsible for activities from the cradle to the grave.”

Jim Kiley, a close friend of Lanzoni’s and a regional vice president for 99, ran for Lanzoni in the 2007 Falmouth Road Race, raising $5,000 on his own. All of those funds went to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where Lanzoni was treated. Brian Casey, a Newington resident since 1998 and operations director for 99, has run the race for his friend since 2009. “He was a great friend and a mentor for me, at one time immediate supervisor and a colleague,” Casey said of Lanzoni.

Team Lanzoni has grown significantly since then. In 2009, Casey, Kiley and seven others raised $60,000 for Dana-Farber. Today, the team — comprised of 72 runners in the Falmouth Road Race and three bicyclists who biked in the Pan-Mass Challenge — are on pace to raise over $350,000 for cancer research. “What Kiley created became a team effort. It really started taking off in 2010-2011. We actively recruited people within the company and anyone that was interested,” including family members as well of people who work for 99, Casey said. “We are the largest team within a team that runs for Dana-Farber. “ Casey, who is a Lanzoni Team Captain, and the other members of the team work tirelessly to raise the funds. Every member of the team is required to raise at least $1,500 (Casey has raised over $24,000 for the Aug. 16 race). The fundraising efforts range from car washes and bake sales to mini-golf tournaments. Casey, who is the self proclaimed “mini-golf czar,” has played a crucial role in organizing

the five tournaments that just this year have raised $150,000 to help combat the deadly disease. Lanzoni’s memory is one of many that push Casey when he runs the race. He lost his father to leukemia when he was 19. “We [Team Lanzoni] will take a sharpie and write names on or shoulders and biceps of people we are running for,” Casey said. The race has propelled Casey to get back into running, a hobby that laid dormant for him from when he was in his 20s until he

first ran the race in 2009. “This run inspired me to get back into running. I did the couch to 5K method. You run a mile then walk half a mile, and you progressively build up to the distance you want to run. I do this for the cause,” Casey said. Although the race is a physically grueling endeavor for casual runners such as Casey, the experience of actually running the race is also a thrill. “You’re in Cape Cod in the summertime ... people see Dana-

Farber on your chest and cheer you on — it’s amazing,” Casey said. “All walks of life come together, all levels of runners, all levels of why people are running and that’s the best part — accomplishing the goal as a team. The path to find a cure is the best part about it. Running for a cure.” Casey also cites his two boys Dylan, 11, and Patrick, 13, as a huge source of inspiration. “They are my biggest fans,” he said. “I’m really teaching them life lessons about helping others and paying it forward. They’re with me every step of the way in my mind.” When the race is over, Team Lanzoni gathers together and toasts all they have accomplished. “It comes down to a group of people coming together for a common cause. Everyone’s been touched. It’s a terrible disease,” Casey said. Team Lanzoni’s tagline this year acknowledges all the strides and advances for cancer research Casey, Kiley and the rest of the runners have worked so hard for: “You don’t have to be a doctor to cure cancer.”
