Local student assistant volunteers at school for the deaf in Zambia; school kids collect supplies By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER

Newington’s Christopher Chorzepa grapples with Daniel Hand’s Connor Carroll in the 170-pound match at the Class L State Wrestling Championships. The team has a stellar showing as three Indians’ wrestlers took home Class L State titles. See story and photos on Page 11.

It was difficult for Travis Stevens’ sixth-grade social studies class at John Wallace Middle School to imagine a classroom where all the students shared one pencil. But then Student Assistant Christine Dauch — who works with them every day — shared her insight into the Lusaka School for the Deaf in Zambia, Africa. This led to Mr. Stevens’ students gathering 117 pounds of clothing, toys and school supplies to send with “Miss D.” on her trip to the African school. Dauch returned from Zambia a few weeks ago with over 2,000 photographs of her trip; they opened up students’ eyes. “A lot of these kids are just tossed to the wayside, broken,” said Stevens, who helped his class make cards to send with their gifts, containing their photos and information about themselves to INSIDE:
