It’s still up in the air as to whether spring weather will grace us Saturday, but at least a celebration of the season will take over Newington High School for the day.

munity outreach event, which this year students have dubbed Spring Fest.

The inaugural event last year was Irish Fest and the school’s gymnasium was adorned in green, since all activities revolved around St. Patrick’s Day. The fundraiser went to benefit Twenty Six Trees, a foundation created to honor the memory of the lives lost in the Sandy Hook school tragedy.

Would your children know what to do if you passed away suddenly? It sounds morbid, but nearing the end of days doesn’t have to be so.

Author Lynn McPhelimy and her parents, Ellyn and Joe Wolak, weren’t going to take any chances.

When the couple was diagnosed with terminal cancer in the very same year, they began a quest to prepare their family for their impending departure.

What surfaced was a book written by their daughter that would eventually land her appearances on “Oprah” and “The Today Show.”

“You know when I’m gone, I don’t want the yard all dug up when you’re looking for the septic tank. So here is this little map,” McPhelimy remembers her father saying.

And her mother? “I don’t want to leave with you with questions; I want to leave you with answers.”

Hi-tech manikin provides training for medical emergencies

A demonstration of a computerized simulation manikin recently gave staff at Jefferson Housein Newington, a skilled nursing facility, a first look at the innovative technology that will give them hands-on training in potentially life-saving procedures.

The intensive education on the highly advanced model will provide staff with the experience to evaluate lifelike vital signs, including dilated pupils, pulse, breath rate, body temperature, oxygen satu-

ration and other symptoms that could signal a medical emergency.

This type of manikin is specifically tailored for skilled nursing facility care and will provide essential training for responding to actual medical problems such as cardiac arrest, strokes, severe allergic reactions and airway obstructions.

Health District take part in National Public Health Week

Each year, the first week of April is designated as National Public Health Week in order to increase the general public’s awareness of the importance of public health in our life and communities. This year, the American Public Health Association has proclaimed as April 7-13 as National Public Health Week.

This year’s theme is “Public Health: Start Here” and focuses on the role of public health and prevention in the new world of health care delivery.

The public health system that keeps our communities healthy and safe is changing as technologies advance, public attitudes toward health shift and more health and safety options become more available through policy changes, such as the Affordable Care Act. Public health works to protect and improve the health of communities around the nation through preventive medicine, health education, control of communicable diseases, emergency

preparedness coordination, application of sanitary measures and monitoring of environmental hazards.

Throughout history, public health has made tremendous strides in food safety, occupational safety, motor vehicle safety, control of infectious diseases, vaccination, fluorination of water, infant and maternal health, and modifying behavior to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In recognition of the importance of public health, Mayor

Newington woman completes three-year Fidelco apprenticeship

BLOOMFIELD — The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation has announced that Newington native Laura DeMaio Roy has successfully completed a threeyear apprenticeship program and is now a Fidelco Certified Guide Dog Trainer/Instructor.

In her new role, DeMaio Roy joins the ranks of the nonprofit’s world-class Guide Dog Trainer/ Instructors responsible for training Fidelco’s elite German Shepherd Guide Dogs and placing them with blind clients across North America.

All Fidelco certified trainer/instructors must undergo a three-year apprenticeship which includes training, evaluation and care for approximately 25 guide dogs in training and numerous written, oral and “blindfold walk” exams.

Fidelco pioneered In-Community Placement in the United States — a process that allows all Fidelco Guide Dog users to be trained in the communities where they live and work. Laura will work closely with these clients on placements, annual follow-ups and interviews.

“Laura has entered the company of a highly respected group of professionals who are changing lives across North America,” said Tommy Mourad, Fidelco’s Director of Guide Dog Training Operations and Client Services.

“Laura has a very keen understanding of the needs of our clients; her own father is legally blind.”

Prior to joining Fidelco, DeMaio Roy worked as a horse trainer, environmental educator and an animal keeper intern, working with a variety of exotic hoof-stock animals. She earned a Master of Public Administration degree in May of 2011 from the University of Connecticut and graduated with honors.

Fidelco is New England’s only guide dog school and Connecticut’s own guide dog training organization. The non-profit organization relies solely on the gifts and the gener-

NEWINGTON EVENTS CALENDAR “JUMP INTO SPRING WITH READING”: During the month of April, the GFWC Newington/Wethersfield Woman’s Club, in cooperation with Newington Public Schools, will sponsor its tenth annual “Jump Into Spring with Reading” contest. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade are eligible to enter the contest, simply by reading books. Students record a date for every 20 minutes that they read or are read to and submit an entry form for every 5 dates. The drawing for prizes will take place at each elementary school Friday, May 2. Five prizes will be awarded per school. By sponsoring this contest, the Woman’s Club is hoping to encourage children to read as much as possible between April 1 and April 30. The club and school district also hope that by being challenged in this way, children will learn the joy of reading for pleasure and entertainment.

Newington Youth Ballet to perform at Wadsworth Athenaeum

The Newington Youth Ballet is set to perform its popular “The Legend of the Magical Forest” at the Wadsworth Athenaeum Saturday, April 19.

Since being founded two years ago by Newington resident Jane Alissa Levin, the non-profit now has more than 60 dancers ranging in age from 7 to 17 — including many national and international champions.

Levin has taught in a half-dozen dance studios and performed professionally with The New York City Ballet and as a soloist with Ballet Atlantic. Many of her students have gone on to professional careers in the arts, including the Royal Ballet in London, the American Ballet Theater in New York City, the Rockettes, the hit TV show “So You Think You Can Dance” and various music videos and commercials. One even made an appearance in the movie “The Adjustment Bureau.”

Levin began writing “The Legend of the Magical Forest,” 14 years ago and choreographed it herself.

Here is the story that she interpreted into dance, in her own words: “The main character carries into the forest a heart of faith, love and hope and places it in a special spot. As long as it remains there, the animals love each other and are infinitely happy. But on the other side of the forest there are another group of characters who sneak in and steal the heart.

This causes the animals to turn on each other, before two with immunity come to the rescue and all is well again.”

“This is a wonderful children’s ballet that can be enjoyed by adults as well as children,” Levin explained. “It’s a story where love and caring reign and evil is destroyed.”

The Newington Youth Ballet also hosts many charity benefits, including an annual fundraiser Jade Cloud, 15, one of the ballet’s star performers, will be featured on show to benefit the non-profit the upcoming season of Lifetime’s Running for Rescues, an orga- hit television show “Dance Moms.”

Next it’s the yard chores for each season and hiding places for your most valuable items. Once all this practical, common-sense stuff is in, it’s time for the “Remember When” section. Here write your best memories of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, spouses,

and letters to each of your children; dates of their birthdays, anniversaries and where to find photographs and home videos, and how to take care of your pets.

There’s also room for recording unfulfilled dreams, things you’d still like to accomplish, and finally — your last wishes. Preparing a last will and testament, your burial, ultimate resting place, obituary, the music to be played at your funeral and parting words to comfort family and friends.

“This is meant to be simple; it’s a map to your life and an opportunity to have courage and confidence to move forward,” McPhelimy explained.

Completing it with your children can be a good way to share your past, organize the present and offer peace of mind in the future.

“It gets interesting and fun and it starts the conversation before the crisis happens,” McPhelimy added.

A nonprofit that’s been a part of the Newington community for more than half a century, NCTC is dedicated to providing quality entertainment and handson performing arts programming to children and young adults from preschool through college.

And this year’s festival theme is all about ushering in the April showers and May flowers.

“We thought we would have an opportunity to broaden our activities with a spring theme, plus we really just wanted to do an egg hunt,” Melissa Morello, student council advisor, said. “It’s something a little bit different.”

The egg hunt is at noon and space will be limited to the first 200 children who register, beginning at 10 a.m. Eggs will contain candy, stickers and other small toys. A lucky few will pick up some with coupons for gift certificates donated by local businesses.

In addition, the event will feature jewelry making, craft projects, games, face painting, and other activities geared toward children ages 2 through 8. Kids will have the opportunity to take photos and interact with several characters including a bunny, a princess, and a prince. There will also be food, refreshments and a bake sale.

Although the Student Council organized the day, students from many of the school’s clubs and classes will be participating in the fun. Members of the Spanish Honor Society, for example, will run an area devoted to Crayons for Cancer, a national non-profit that raises money for children with cancer and their families by selling crayons repurposed into fun shapes. At Saturday’s festival, they will be sorting and peeling crayons with the help of any kids interested.

“It’s all driven by the students; they’re very excited,” said Morello, who teaches English.

A couple of council members currently involved in NCTC productions and classes nominated the organization as this year’s beneficiary. The council, which has more than 100 members, voted almost unanimously in the charity’s favor.

“We’re all very excited,” said Claire Van Cott, artistic director of NCTC. Funds collected through Spring Fest will all go to benefit general children’s programming at the theatre, which will begin its 52nd season this summer. Each family who attends will be asked to pay $10 admission, but people are encouraged to donate more to the cause.

End Hunger Connecticut! names Newington resident to key post

End Hunger Connecticut!, a statewide anti-hunger and food security organization with headquarters in Hartford, has added Newington resident Steven Gavron as SNAP Outreach Coordinator.

SNAP is the State Department of Social Services’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food stamp benefits to families depending on household size, income and expenses.

As SNAP Outreach Coordinator, Gavron will work to increase the number of eligible individuals and families participating in SNAP with a focus on the Connecticut communities with the largest gaps between SNAP eligibility and participation rates.

He brings to the table an extensive background in community organizing, having previously served as executive director of

the CT AIDS Action Council and director of the LGBT Hate Crime Project at the CT Women’s Education and Legal Fund.

There he assisted victims of hate crimes in advocating for improved public policy.

Outside of the office, Gavron can be found hiking, biking, skiing and volunteering his spare time in support of various political campaigns.

“We’re excited to welcome Steve to End Hunger Connecticut! and to enhance our SNAP team’s capacity,” Lucy Nolan, executive director of End Hunger Connecticut!, said. “Our newest additions bring strong community organizing skills and a passion for improving food security in Connecticut to the team and we look forward to collaborating with them on a wide-range of initiatives.”

We are hoping to find a family who will connect on a deeper level with Sylvester. He can be a little shy to start; he takes a bit of time to warm up, but when he does, he’s putty in your hands. He simply needs some time, love and attention.

Shutter-Buds began in August 2012 as a very friendly supportive group of photographers with different levels of experience and a variety of cameras. Members love to take photos, learn and share with each other and have fun. They’re a very active group and what makes them unique is they are very creative in their approach, suggesting not only traditional photography, but also, adding twists to create new and original photo ops. The group encourages seeing the world in new ways and putting more of each member in their photos. They have many on-site events, but also have many fun online challenges, always striving to give members many choices to practice, learn new skills, take photos, and be creative. “LET’S TALK MURDER” MYSTERY DISCUSSION GROUP: Mystery lovers are invited to join “Let’s Talk Murder” a mystery discussion series at the library. The group will meet Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. to discuss “Sworn to Silence” by Linda Castillo. Kate Burkholder, a former Amish resident of Painters Mill, is returning as police chief 16 years after a series of brutal murders took place there, but when a new victim is found under her watch, she struggles with a secret that could hurt both her and her family. The discussion series is facilitated by librarian and former newspaper journalist Marge Ruschau who loves mysteries and is the facilitator of several mystery discussion groups in Connecticut.
