GOP picks Gary Byron
The candidate will run for Nafis’ seat STAFF WRITER
Newington native Gary Byron was recently chosen by the town’s Republican Committee as its candidate for State Representative of the 27th Assembly District. He is running against Carol Anest, chairwoman of the Town Democratic Committee and also a lifelong town resident. Both are hoping to fill the soon-to-bevacant seat of Democrat Sandy Nafis, who has represented the district for the last eight terms and is retiring later this year. in Newington since 1988. He also does the afternoon lottery drawing for Fox CT and has been involved with Newington Community Television since 2001. He currently hosts the show Connecticut Conversations, formerly known as Common Sense Connecticut. Byron is single and has no children. He’s decided to run because he’d like to make Connecticut a place people want to live and work. “The sad thing is that there’s young people leaving to find jobs and retirees are leaving because they can get a better deal elsewhere; I think that’s unacceptable,” Byron explained. “The middle class is being hurt and if we don’t change it we’ll be a state with two classes – the rich and the poor.” Lowering taxes, he added, is of

Byron to challenge Anest for state representative Continued from Page 1
“paramount importance.” “Connecticut is one of the most expensive states to live in and we have one of the highest tax burdens. We’re not creating enough good paying jobs to pay for our state government … our labor pool is shrinking but our taxes aren’t; it’s unacceptable.” To help mend this GARY BYRON situation, Byron has a few different ideas. “I would end corporate welfare – no more billion dollar tax breaks to billion dollar corporations paid for by the middle class.” But business regulations need to
change too, he says. “The businesses are so over-regulated by the state and so taxed by the state that Connecticut isn’t even on the radar for corporations to move to or current corporations to consider staying in.” As a small business owner and a fiscal conservative, Byron hopes to bring back prosperity to the middle class. “My opponent is a Newington Democratic party boss – the party responsible for raising our taxes, and she has a history of following a hard line Democratic agenda … she doesn’t represent everyone, she represents the status quo.” Byron vows to bring the needs of all Newington residents to the table if he is elected. “I will go to Hartford and represent all of Newington; I will not turn away
a good idea no matter who it’s from.” Right now, many of those ideas are related to development around the two CTfastrak stations being built in Newington, which Byron feels very strongly about. “It is a big risk to pay $525 million with no evidence it will ever pay off because the ridership is totally unproven. I believe it’s going to be a long term money-loser for Connecticut and I would never have voted for it.” But it’s here, so now what? “I would like to see commercial property around it, but something I don’t want to see there is low-income housing,” Byron said, adding of whatever development goes there, “We have to be careful it doesn’t contribute to more congestion on our streets in that area than we already have.” Erica Schmitt can be reached at (860) 225-4601, ext. 210, or eschmitt@ newbritainherald.com.

Seventeen-year-old Francisco Chang is an up-and-coming filmmaker, philanthropist and scholar. Currently a junior at Newington High School, Francisco moved here from Guatemala when we was just eight years old. In 2014 he participated in Leadership Greater Hartford’s Summer Nexus Program, which is just the beginning of his community service work. Partnering with South Park Inn, a local men’s shelter, he and fellow volunteers collected donations of toiletry items from local stores, friends, family members, dental offices and other retail locations. They delivered over 2,200 toiletry items to South Park Inn, resulting in 131 “Bags of Basics” to be distributed to homeless individuals living outside. “I participated in the Summer Nexus program because it provided a way for me to give back to my community,” he said recently. “Summer Nexus was an unforgettable experience. A message from the Fun with the family Newington Chamber of Commerce president
Thank you all for supporting the Newington Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Cruising Newington Classic Car show. Every year our fantastic car show committee, headed by Bob Newbold, volunteers their time to ensure a perfect night of nostalgia. With support from Connecticut Street Legends, last year we had over 250 cars and we are hoping to exceed that this year. This is one of the most anticipated evenings here in Newington. Thousands of people will flood Market Square to see the beautiful cars, listen to the oldies music and relive memories from the past. While all this is going on they are creating new memories for their children by telling stories of their old cars or cars owned by their parents and so on. The car show brings on a different atmosphere in the downtown Newington and for just a few hours
you are transported to the past. I want to thank this year’s show sponsor, Liberty Bank, and our supporting sponsor, Price Chopper, our design sponsor, Picture This Productions, and our media sponsor, Newington Town Crier. Because of their support, the support of Connecticut Street Legends and you, the community, this event continues to be a success. While you are at the show, be sure to upload your favorite pictures to our Facebook page. Not a fan? Like us on Facebook and get the inside scoop on Chamber events. I look forward to seeing you and your families at the Cruising Newington Classic Car. I hope you all have a wonderful evening and continue to support the Newington Chamber of Commerce. NEWINGTON — They’re known as street legends because it’s a rarity to catch a glimpse of these treasures on the streets any more, except when on their way to venues like the Annual Cruising Newington Classic Car Show. Hosted by The Connecticut Street Legends themselves - in collaboration with the Newington Chamber of Commerce, the event drew in car collectors and aficionados, young and old alike. The 8th Annual show is happening next Thursday, June 12 on Market Square in downtown Newington. The street will be covered with classic cars, since the cutoff year is 1988. Members of the CT Street Legends club are lucky enough to park each of these vintage vehicles – most in pristine condition – in their respective spots.
