NEWINGTON — What did you do on your summer vacation?

Paulina Baclawska finished her junior year at Newington High School June 13. The next day, she was crowned Miss Polonia Connecticut 2015 at Lake

Compounce.

The 16-year-old will be preparing for the Miss Polonia USA pageant in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., on Sept. 27.

“She is that girl next door that will represent the Polish community in the state very well,” said Bogusia Gladysz, pageant coordi-

nator. “She is outgoing, not afraid to speak out and very mature for her age. She knows what she wants to do in life and she is a good role model for younger girls.”

Public rallies against new center

Over 75 people crowded Tuesday night’s public hearing on the proposed $30.37 million renovation to Newington Town Hall, a project which includes the construction of a Volume 54, No. 26

After hearing from the public, the Town Council voted to delay a planned Aug. 19 referendum for residents to weigh in on the project until Sept. 9, to maximize the amount of voters.

The center’s proposed location in nearby Mill Pond Park was what sparked much of the opposition from 20 of the 21 speakers. Replacing the roof, repairing deteriorating infra-

structure and redesigning the Town Hall, which was built in the 1950s as the town’s high school, is acknowledged by all parties to be a priority.

But an added project component — building a new community center instead of renovating the current Mortensen Community Center inside town hall — is what has some folks up in arms.

New community center needs further consideration To the Editor:

I have been a Newington resident for 38 years. My family and I have benefited greatly from a full range of town services. I was happy to receive an invitation by email to attend the Public Hearing concerning the plans for the Town Hall Renovations and new community center. Being new to the process, I sat in the back and listened with an open mind and was in awe of the citizens on both sides of the issues for their devotion to the welfare of the town. We are blessed.

As I processed what I learned at the hearing, the following thoughts came to mind. Keep in mind; I am an outsider to the process thus far. I believe that the referendum should be moved to November as a cost-saving measure, to get a fuller turnout, and to give the public more time to consider the project.

My gut feeling is that the current

community center is not salvageable and sadly must be demolished.

Although the plans for the new community center look phenomenal, I feel the need for an alternative (El Cheapo) plan. Perhaps an attempt at creative stewardship of existing facilities can be used. For example, can town agencies work together to share existing gyms, classrooms, pools etc. Money can be spent to improve these existing facilities for the betterment of greater portions of the population rather than a more expensive dedicated new facility. As a senior citizen with adult children and grandchildren living in town, I would like to see a plan that saves money and serves the greatest number of citizens.

I appreciate the cooperation of the town and church for mutual benefit and would encourage further exploration of unused space in nonprofits for town activities. I propose shared facilities between

towns. West Hartford has outstanding leisure services that are run though school facilities. The Elmwood Senior Center is also a community center and is designed as an enterprise system that takes very little out of the tax base.

Newington can perhaps benefit from this example. As we work for non-duplication of services we should also consider redundant use of space.

In order to be a responsible citizen, I know I need to take the time to bring myself up to date on the hard work done by the town manager and the board over the past eight years. I may find that the new community center would be best for the future of Newington. Personally, I would all but live there, but I would like to have a creative, viable, less expensive choice on which to vote in November.

I’ve had the chance to meet survivors, who have beaten the odds. I’ve read documented cases of terminal patients, who have gone into complete remission. Institutions like Dana-Farber are making advances in treatment that are really encouraging. So, the half glass full attitude is the way to live.”

When Newington resident Ben Freeman, 38, pedaled off on a 190mile bicycle ride across Massachusetts in 2008, it was to honor the memory of his mother-in-law Jane Kinney, who passed away from cancer a year earlier. The Annual Pan Mass Challenge, the world’s largest cancer fundraiser, had his participation again in 2009. But this August Freeman’s ride will mean more than any in the past.

Funds raised through the PMC support adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where Freeman is currently a patient. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December. Back then, she had braces and was a little chubby. I knew being in the pageant would give her that confidence. It did, it gave her a lot of confidence. She did not win that pageant, but she sure won this pageant.”

Dorota Baclawska added, “She is a smart girl. If she was not smart, she could not be in the pageant. First smart, then beauty.”

Baclawska, who received a $1,000 prize for her win, was

born in southern Poland. She moved to New Britain when she was 3 and now lives in Newington.

She is among the brightest at Newington High, a high honors student in the top 5 percent of her class. She plans on pursuing a career in criminal justice.

Baclawska wore three outfits for the pageant: a cocktail dress, evening gown and bikini. She was also asked one question: How do you define success?”

Baclawska told the judges that it was important to “be comfortable with yourself and not worry

about what others think about you and to make positive decisions. And to help others.”

That answer may have helped swayed some of the judges, as she was crowned the winner. Her life — she said — might have changed a little. But, Baclawska emphasized, who she is as a person will never change.

The pageant, she said, “built my self-confidence and self-image. It helps you get out of your shell and take risks in life.”

Baclawska, who is debating whether to attend Yale, Fairfield University or Trinity College, has

a shot at representing the United States in the Miss Polonia World Pageant later this year if she comes out first in the Miss Polonia USA pageant in September.

According to Aldona A. Vonlaube, owner of the Miss Polonia pageant, about 10 states with

large Polish-American populations take part in the Polonia USA pageant. Several countries will take part in the Miss Polonia World contest.

Democrat Clarke Castelle made the resolution to move the referendum to a later date. “The goal is to get construction started by late March, early April,” he said. “Get the contractors bidding while they’re really interested in this work before their busy summer schedules. Also, construction costs and interest rates are likely to go up — those costs are potentially much greater than the costs of having a special election,” Castelle added. “I think that the people who really care about this one way or another, in favor or opposed, will come out and vote Sept. 9.”

Girls in Stride program pays off with 5K success Air National Guard treated to golf

Earlier this month Newington girls from ages 6-12 endured the warm temperatures and ran in the Celebrate West Hartford 5K Road Race. The girls participated in a new program, Girls in Stride, offered this spring by Newington Parks and Recreation Department.

The seven-week training program incorporated yet sophisticated training techniques while attempting to focus on making sure the kids had fun training to run longer distances.

The girls were introduced to the concepts of goal-setting and planning, proper running preparation, mechanics of running, journaling of training, nutrition and mental preparation.

The Girls in Stride group met once a week at Mill Pond Park. The group running sessions consisted of running games, workouts that utilized a team goal, laps around the 1/4 mile course within the park, and tracking the girls’ distances.

Each weekly session also included an educational component as well as challenges, nutritional tips, and at home running and exercise assignments.

The seven-week session ended

with a mock race during their last practice, including race bibs, an air horn start, water station and finish line. The program aimed to help the participants build confidence, achieve their goal s and experience success by learning the importance of finishing something once it has been started.

Also in Newington,the Mill Pond Pool and Churchill Pool is open for the summer.

Both Mill Pond Pool and Churchill Pool are only open to Newington residents, but residents may bring non-residents as their guests during recreational swim times. Non-residents may only use the pools as a guest of a Newington resident, and must pay the daily admission rate. The Parks and Recreation Department has more informantion available by phone and information on all their summer programs available on their website, as well as a first look at the upcoming fall programs like football camps.

Middlewoods of Newington wins Assisted Living Award

Middlewoods of Newington is the proud recipient of a Connecticut Assisted Living Association Award (CALA) for outstanding resident service.

Certified Nursing Assistant, Elizabeth Colon, was honored at CALA’s Annual Resident Service Awards held at The Water’s Edge Resort and Spa in Westbrook on Friday, June 20th.

Elizabeth has been part of the Middlewoods team since August 2013. She was nominated by fellow staff members for her outstanding and exceptional resident service; for providing far more than just personal care to the residents of Middlewoods of Newington.

Elizabeth was recognized for

her initiative, reliability, observation and communication skills, and the great rapport she has built with residents, family members, and staff. She is truly an asset to the community and makes a true difference in the lives of the residents and staff.

Stew Leonard’s offering cooking classes for kids

Stew Leonard’s Newington store, 3475 Berlin Turnpike, will offer a number of new cooking classes for children over the next few months, including two new week-long culinary summer camps. The popular A Book and a Bite class series for toddlers will also return this summer where class instructors read the children a food related book and then create a dish based on the story.

The children receive hands-on instruction in preparing various products, as well as learn about the importance of measuring, cooperation skills in the kitchen and the importance of food safety.

Price is per child per class, which is payable at the time of registration. Classes will be held in Stew Leonard’s Executive Kitchen on the second floor of the grocery store in Newington, Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult, except for the classes for toddlers ages 2-5 years old, which requires an adult to supervise their little one.

The schedule is as follows:

July 5, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Toddler Class: Tortilla Pizza and Blueberry Parfait; $15 per child; Ages 2-5 Today we will make a crispy tortilla pizza with a variety of toppings! Toddlers will build a blueberry parfait with granola, yogurt, and fresh blueberries.

July 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Strawberry Extravaganza Class; $25 per child; Ages 6 and up; Strawberries are at their best this time of the year! We will we prepare strawberry and cream pies, strawberry truffles, and a refreshing strawberry ice cream.

Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials.

• Cover babies’ playpens and carriages with mosquito netting when outdoors.

• Eliminate sources of standing water such as stagnant ponds, ditches, flower pots and old tires, as mosquito only needs little water to lay eggs. Drain children’s pools, clean clogged gutters, and flush birdbaths and fountains once or twice a week. Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, and any similar containers that have accumulated on your property, and drill holes in the bottoms of recycling and garbage containers left outside.

• Store boats, wheelbarrows, and containers upside down. If you have a pond, be sure it is aerated or stocked with fish such as goldfish and minnows, which eat mosquito larvae.

• Patch holes in screens and make sure screens are tightly attached to doors and windows.

Each year, the Connecticut Mosquito Management Program conducts mosquito monitoring throughout the state. This monitoring, coordinated by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, began on June 2. As in previous years, mosquitoes will be collected around the state to detect the presence of viruses that can cause illness in people, such as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus. Two of the collection sites within the Central CT Health District are located in Newington and Wethersfield.

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), WNV-positive mosquitoes were trapped in 22 towns in 2013. Four Connecticut residents from the towns of Stamford, Stratford and Bridgeport were diagnosed with WNV-associated illnesses, with no fatalities reported. In 2013, mosquitoes with EEE virus were identified in five Connecticut towns: Haddam, Hampton, North Stonington, Plainfield and Voluntown.

To minimize the risk of acquiring a mosquito-borne illness, the following steps are suggested: • Avoid outdoor activities one hour before and one hour after dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

“For the students it was the culmination of 13 years of hard work and dedication and the start of a new chapter in their lives,” said Lucy Sims, one of 25 parents on the party planning committee.

It was Lucy’s husband Steve Sims who built the cruise ship in the school along with two other fathers.

Nearly 350 Newington High School seniors now hold diplomas after last week’s commencement ceremony, but it was the after-party that will really go down in history.

Twenty-five parents worked for six months on the Project Graduation Party so that when students returned from graduation at the Oakdale Theatre last Tuesday they’d be shocked to find their high school transformed.

The 2014 party theme was “Cruising into the Future” so the school became a cruise ship, with on-board shops, food, entertainment, games and other activities.

The Central Connecticut Health District honored two outgoing board members at its June 19 Board of Health meeting. Leaving the Board after nearly eight years of service is Kevin Borrup of Newington. Borrup, a former health board chairman, was recently appointed to the Newington Board of Education.

Also recognized for his many years of service to the Health District was Art Yoaps of Rocky Hill. Yoaps served on the Board of Health for over 16 years and was the longest serving member in the Health District’s history. Yoaps provided board members with some observations on the changes that he has seen in public health and in the health district over the years.

The Health District was established in 1996 and serves the towns of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield. It is governed by a 12-member board of health made up of Nancy Carol Brault, the interim director of health, and 11 public members appointed by the 4 member towns. Board members serve without compensation. They represent the needs and interests of their member towns, serve stag-

Kellogg names assistant principal NEWINGTON — Dr. William C. Collins, Superintendent of Schools, has announced the appointment of Jason Smith as assistant principal of Martin Kellogg Middle School. Smith completed his coursework at Central Connecticut State University earning his SixthYear Certificate in Educational Leadership in 2012, Master of Science in Educational Leadership in 2005, and completed his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education magna cum laude with a focus in mathematics in 2003.

For the past year and a half, Smith has served as assistant principal at East Windsor Middle School. In this assignment, Smith was responsible for maintaining a safe and productive learning environment for all students by addressing disciplinary issues, investigating bullying incidents, coordinating student schedules and interventions (academic and behavioral), and overseeing student attendance and 504 plans. In addition, Smith has extensive experience in school climate, PBIS, and with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

Prior to his work as a building administrator, Smith taught grades 7 and 8 Language Arts at Roosevelt Middle School in New Britain from 2004 to 2013. Smith brings a strong academic background in both ELA and mathematics, and a proven track record of successful teaching and administrative experiences.

“We are very excited to have him as part of the Newington Public Schools administrative team.

Danger of lead in homes

Do you know what is colorless, odorless and tasteless, and affects nearly half a million children in the United States? If you thought of lead, you are correct. In fact, an elevated blood lead level higher than 5 micrograms per deciliter is harmful to children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Lead is a highly toxic metal found in contaminated soil, household dust, toys, drinking water, lead glazed pottery and some metal jewelry. However, lead-based paint and lead contaminated dust are the main sources for lead, with children under the age of 6 being most at risk. A child is at risk when they place lead products in their mouth or by breathing lead dust.

Lead paint becomes a health hazard when it begins to chip off of any surfaces, including ceilings, walls, windows, woodwork and sometimes even on floors.

The CDC estimates that 24 million housing units have deteriorated lead paint and elevated levels of lead-contaminated house dust.

If you suspect that your home was painted before

1978 or otherwise may have paint that contains lead in it, you should avoid the following activities: scraping, sanding or using a heat gun on painted surfaces; making holes in the walls to get at pipes; tearing out walls; repeatedly bumping furniture or other objects; unnecessarily opening and closing windows with painted frames and sills.

It is always a good idea to call your local health department and ask to test your home for lead-based paint.

WETHERSFIELD LIBRARY CALENDAR ADULT PROGRAMS ROY ZARTARIAN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT: Photographs by Newington resident Roy Zartarian are on display at the library during the month of June.

Zartarian is a naturalist by avocation who has been chasing birds and butterflies for many years. He has led nature-oriented walks and field trips at several locations in central Connecticut and has spoken on birds and butterflies to schools, garden clubs and other organizations. Zartarian serves as president of the Connecticut Butterfly Association and is active in Newington’s Save Cedar Mountain movement.

His photographs have been exhibited at the Essex Eagle Festival and appear in the Butterflies and Moths of North America Project database and the Vermont Natural History Inventory database.
