Woods, DelBuono to square off on several issues facing town

Newington’s mayoral candidates will face off Monday in a debate to inform voters before the upcoming Nov. 5 election. It hasn’t been an easy campaign season for anyone. Mayor Steve Woods, a Democrat, has been accused by his opponent, Beth DelBuono — and the Republican Town Committee — of unethical behavior. to garner $233,000 in business for his company, Stonehedge Landscaping, was brought to the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office. The investigation was closed in September with no action against Woods. The incumbent mayor called their accusations “defamation” and urged the opposing party to submit a complaint to the town’s ethics board if they still find fault with his actions. At recent Town Council meetings, residents have expressed frustration over the continued focus on the accusations as the election nears. Veteran firefighters share memories that flow like water from a hose By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
Veteran firefighters in Newington celebrated their past, present and future at a banquet at the Sphinx Shriners Temple Saturday night. Over 100 people attended the event, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Newington Veteran Firefighters Association.
Established in 1953 by 12 Company 2 firefighters, the NVFA is now 75 members strong. “It’s quite unusual for a group to stick together this long,” said NVFA President Bob Seiler, a lifelong volunteer who also chairs the Newington Board of Fire Commissioners, is president of the Newington Kiwanis
Club, treasurer of the Memorial Day Parade Committee and recipient of the Chamber’s 2013 Public Service Award. NEWINGTON POLICE BLOTTER Newington police report the following: John Moody, 50, of Hartford, was charged Oct. 1 with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. James Harmon, 34, of 63 Miami Ave., was charged Oct. 4 with three counts criminal violation of a protective order. James Jackson Jr., 32, of 150 Curtis St., was charged Oct. 4 with operating with a suspended license, and operating with a suspended registration. Stephen Johnson II, 30, 3000 Berlin Turnpike, was charged Oct. 6 with fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny. Krystyna Fiuk, 59, of New Britain, was charged Oct. 7 with failure to pay or plead.
Anthony Mooers, 33, of New Britain, was charged Oct. 8 with failure to register as a sex offender. Roberto Perez, 37, of Hartford, was charged Oct. 8 with sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit sixthdegree larceny and interfering with a police officer. Yen Wen Jr., 25, of West Hartford, was charged Oct. 8 with criminal violation of a restraining order and first-degree criminal trespassing. Steven Figler, 21, of 32 Fifth St., was charged Oct. 8 with 17 counts second-degree sexual assault and 17 counts risk of injury to a minor. Carol Anest, chairwoman of the Democratic Town Committee, and Neal Forte, Republican Town Committee chairman, will each prepare eight questions. That evening they will pick four questions from the other’s eight to be posed Beth DelBuono at the debate. A coin toss prior to each question will determine which candidate answers first. They will have two minutes to respond and the other individual, one minute, before the first is given a 30-second rebuttal. I would like to set the record straight. Often times when stories are relayed, it is like the telephone game that we played as kids. Details get lost or changed in the translation. In recent weeks, I have brought to light several examples of unethical conduct by the Mayor. I have presented the facts, and nothing else. I have only made statements that are factual and that I can back up with past meeting minutes, or documents directly from our town departments, not by hearsay. Bringing facts to the public’s attention about unacceptable behaviors and procedures is NOT dirty politics, it IS how we make things better for all. As the election approaches, I urge residents to call or email me to ask questions about what they are thinking and hearing. I hope to bring our town government and Newington back to being open and ethical; a place where decisions are made publicly, and open and honest dialogue can happen in a respectful way with all parties being heard in the process. We need to have ethics training for all town employees and elected officials. The more we talk about it, instead of hiding from it, the better Newington’s future will be. We need to work together with community and civic organizations to bring back the family feeling that many of us grew up with in this town. We can work together to accomplish this. Reader says Marocchini grew up in Newington and would serve it well as a town councilor
To the Editor: For several years, I have been attending Town Council, board, commission and committee meetings on a regular basis. A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting a young man, James ( Jim) Marocchini, who, at that time, was a member of the Downtown Revitalization Committee. Since then I have encountered him at other town meetings, among them, the Board of Parks and Recreation and the Economic Development
Commission, where he currently serves as its chairman. Usually I have found myself the single, lonely public participant ready with questions and comments. I have always found Jim willing to listen and responsive to inquiries. If he is unable to provide an answer at the time, he has never failed to get back to me with an answer. Jim is a product of this town, having grown up only one street from my home.
He has chosen to stay here in Newington with his lovely wife, Jill, and raise their adorable daughter Isabella. Jim has already proven his dedication to this town evidenced by his years of service. Jim is one of the Democratic candidates for Town Council and I will be voting for James ( Jim) Marocchini on Nov. 5. I urge you to consider casting your vote for Jim as well. Elected officials must have no hint of impropriety
To the Editor: It is with some amusement that I have been reading in this paper the letters regarding the current mayor’s ethical dilemma. Those trying to explain the issue away are both amusing and a little worrisome. To me and others, this is a simple issue; no elected official should be in a position to personally gain from that position. Elected officials are keepers of the public trust and any hint of impropriety is violating that trust. They are by rights held to a higher standard. To think that any elected official does not exert direct or indirect influence in purchasing decisions is naïve. At the very least the perception that it is a possibility should be a red
flag. Elected officials should and must be sensitive enough of the ethical dilemma created when they hold a position of public trust and do business with the town of Newington. The issue then becomes is the mayor in a position of authority in the town of Newington and if so did his business and hence him gain financially while he was in that position. If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then there is an ethical problem. No amount of trying to explain it away will change that. It is, after all, pretty simple as I see it. The Newington Volunteer Fire Department benefited from funds raised at the 2013 Waterfall Festival. “They’re all volunteers and I never really hear of them being a recipient of donations,” Theresa Reynolds, festival chairperson, said of why she chose the department. “They work really hard and I thought it would be important to give back to them, because they’re important to the town and we should show our appreciation.” Firefighters will use funds raised toward enhancing the site of the 9/11 monument at their Main Street station. in the old days,” he explained. Professionals in just about every industry can tell you how their work has changed over the last century, and firefighting is no exception. You won’t see guys hanging off the back end of a truck on their way to a burning house anymore, for example. That’s now illegal. Back in the day, anyone in the department could drive a fire apparatus. While they don’t need to carry a commercial driver’s license to operate one now, firefighters do carry a special license that designates their ability and the Department of Motor Vehicles tests them regularly. “All of the changes we’ve seen for the most part have been safety improvements,” Seiler said. A safety division now monitors firefighters’ health after they emerge from an incident, and trucks have a climate-controlled recovery area. Equipment has changed, too. “Right now it costs us about $2,000 to outfit a firefighter,” said Seiler. “They get all their own personal protection gear.

Back when I joined the fire department we had five fire coats in our company and five sets of boots,” he remembered. “If you got lucky, you found an old pair of boots lying around and were happy to have somebody’s handme-downs.”
How often do you hear about a barn catching fire these days? There was one night the veteran group recalled three barns in Newington going up in flames — one after another. At Saturday evening’s banquet they recounted these memo-
ries and also read the names of Newington firefighters who have since passed on. Two were killed in the line of duty two years apart. Francis Kochanowicz was riding on the back of a Co. 1 truck in 1962 when it tipped over at the corner of Main Street and New Britain Avenue, crushing him. Fellow firefighter Jay Cole Jr. was among those who lifted the truck off his body. Two years later, Cole was killed after responding to a fire. Firefighters have to have at least five years of active duty in order to join the NVFA, and its older members hope young Newington firefighters will keep their tradition alive. In addition to their quarterly meetings, NVFA members have a setback league that plays together October through April. They also help to maintain the monument erected from the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001 that sits in front of Newington’s Main Street station, where every September public safety officials gather for a memorial ceremony. Before the Newington Volunteer Fire Department celebrates its 100th Anniversary in 2017, Fire Chief Chris Schroeder hopes to make improvements to that site, including a new stone walkway and possibly benches. The real leaders, namely Mayor Stephen Woods and the Democratic majorities on the Town Council and Board of Education, are stalwartly avoiding the slippery slope of politics that depend on mudslinging. They are the people that will set the example that will set the goals and debate the issues that the Republicans won’t touch, because they are too busy casting paper mache stones all over the place and they know that
they have been woefully lacking in any kind of leadership qualities for the past two years, at least. Election Day is in November, and International Anti-Bullying Month will be over, but let’s make Nov. 5 Newington’s Anti-Bullying Day and set the tone for our future by voting against bullying and electing Stephen Woods and the entire Democratic team. To the Editor: I may be mistaken, but I think October is International Anti-Bullying Month. Anyway, it should be, because all month Neal Forte and the Republicans have been trying to bully the citizens of Newington into voting for them on Nov. 5 by knowingly making false accusations against Newington Mayoral Candidate Stephen Woods and his family and the company they operate. In spite of all their protestations that this is not a political vendetta, they continue to buy ad space spouting their vicious, unfounded allegations, even after Steve was cleared of any wrongdoings. CT Electric Car featured NEWINGTON LIBRARY CALENDAR at National Plug-in Day
NEW BRITAIN — CT Electric Car, the state’s foremost installer of electric vehicle charging stations, was featured at National Plug-in Day Sept. 29 at Central Connecticut State University. The event was part of the third annual nationwide celebration to heighten awareness of today’s availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles.
