A daily struggle Nearly 3,000 local families can barely make ends meet

NEWINGTON — Over 22 percent of Newington’s 12,818 households don’t earn enough money to pay for life’s basic necessities, a new report from the United Way of Connecticut shows. Volume 54, No. 48

The ALICE report, which stands for Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed, also shows that 5 percent of Newington’s population lives at or below the federal poverty level and 9 percent is unemployed, above the state average of 7.8 percent. The report, released this week, also shows that some 474,445 households in Connecticut, or 35 percent, are struggling to support themselves at a basic level.
