together to climb, other times one is just one – making the expedition alone.

Rocky Hill resident Rohan Freeman founded his company the very same year he climbed Mount Everest. Appropriately, the slogan of Hartford-based engineering firm Freeman Companies is “ELEVATE your expectations.”

Freeman just became the first African-American to complete the “Seven Summits” – reaching the top of the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. His first was Africa’s highest peak in 2002: Mount Kilimanjaro. His last was the Carstenz Pyramid in Austral-Asia this past October. In between was Denali, (Alaska) Elbrus, (Russia) Aconcagua, (South America) Everest, (Asia) and Vinson Massif (Antarctica).

After graduating from UConn in 1995, Freeman, an avid athlete, was determined to continue living an active lifestyle. He began climbing in 2002 and hasn’t stopped since. The hobby also served as an opportunity for him to travel the world, another passion.

“I think nature and the outdoors are out there to be enjoyed. It’s good for your soul and good exercise,” added Freeman, who also golfs, snowboards, bikes and runs regularly.

“If it’s outdoors, I’m probably going to try it.”

Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Freeman spent much of his time playing outside, a luxury that many kids — especially kids growing up in cities — don’t have.

“I think most African-Americans probably grow up in large metropolises and they’re attracted to traditional popular sports such as basketball, football, baseball, tennis, maybe golf,” Freeman said. “The outdoors, which aren’t so easy or so accessible don’t pay as many rewards or aren’t as glamorous.”

Everest, breathing only 30 to 40 percent of the oxygen we normally take in at sea level? Just one of the difficulties you run into during a high altitude climb is the lack of air in the elevation.

“It’s very difficult to hike and climb in rarified air,” Freeman said. “It’s definitely your primary concern to get your body used to operating at that level.”

But then there’s packing and consuming the right foods and the right amount of them, having the proper gear and using it properly, and making sure you brought enough rope.

It took him seven weeks to climb Mount Everest, which he did twice — alone and with a group.

“When I reached the top it took a few seconds to set in … I can’t say I was fully elated because I was half way there, now I had to make it back down safely,” he remembers.

roundings and one of the things that captivated my imagination beyond belief, I’ll remember it for the rest of my life — was the curvature of the earth. You could see a distinct arc in the earth.”

As he began reaching the tops of mountain peaks, Freeman simultaneously began reaching his own professional goals. His bucket list is long, but it also sees constant activity because he isn’t one to hesitate at the peak of success — he might gaze around and enjoy the view for a second — but then it’s on to scaling the next mountain.

His future ventures?

In 2014, Freeman plans to run the Marathon des Sables, a 151 mile race in the Sahara Desert, considered the toughest foot race on earth.

After that, he’s got his sights set on the Connecticut Governor’s Office.

“If you’re going to dream, you’ve gotta dream big,” he says.

Wide variety of events taking place over Christmas break

When the bell rings at Newington High School this Friday afternoon kids will race out in a flurry, wound up for Christmas break. The same goes for the middle and elementary school students, who also have an 11-day holiday recess this year.

Parents of young children may already have a few things planned and older kids will likely not have any problem making their own vacation fun with the week, but

there are a few organized activities happening in town too.

A sprinkling of options: ∎ Newington High School’s indoor pool will be open special hours during the holiday break.

Thurs: 12 to 1:30 p.m. Fri.: 12 to 2:30 p.m. ∎ The 4th Annual Basketball Skills Academy for boys in grades 5 to 8 will be held at the Mortensen Community Center Gym Wednesday to Friday Dec. 26-28. Springfield Technical

Newington Electric has a history that dates back more than five decades in Connecticut. However, in 2011, the company identified the need to evolve with changing demands, forming the division CT Home Generator Systems.

Mental health advocates welcome, wary of new focus

The calls to improve the mental health care system in the wake of last week’s elementary-school shooting are welcome, and worrisome, for people like Kate Mattias.

“The good news is there’s attention being paid,” said Mattias, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Connecticut. “On the other hand, it’s attention wrought by a terrible, terrible incident.” She and other advocates have spent years trying to counter the perception that people with mental illness are violent and dangerous; in fact, research suggests that they’re more likely than the general public to be victims of violent crime. And people who work in the mental health system are wary of potential policy changes that are based on the notion that people with mental illness are violent.

“All of the evidence that we have suggests that people with mental illness are essentially not more dangerous on average than ordinary people,” said Dr. Harold “Hank” Schwartz, psychiatrist-in-chief at the Institute of Living in Hartford.

“If you combine mental illness with substance abuse, the risks go up, but

if you combine the range of people with impulsive personalities with alcohol and drug abuse, the danger of violence goes up.” Earlier this year, advocates turned out in force to oppose a proposal to allow people with mental illnesses who are not hospitalized to be medicated, even if they object, if remaining unmedicated would leave them or others at risk of harm. The concept could be revisited in the wake of the Newtown shooting.

The way discussions about the mental health system are framed risks further stigmatizing people with mental illness, Schwartz said.

This is important because the stigma associated with mental illness can be a major barrier to people getting treatment and early interventions that could stave off larger problems, experts say.

That’s not to say they don’t welcome a discussion about mental health.

Mental health crisis “We have a mental health crisis, especially among kids,” said Dr. Eric Arzubi, a fellow in child and adolescent psychiatry who co-chairs the Keep the Promise Coalition, which advocates on mental health policy in the state. “The

fact that we have to wait until now to have this discussion is sad. I think a lot of people on the ground have known there’s a problem and there’s a crisis.” He said the numbers would surprise most people. In any given year, about a quarter of U.S. adults have one or more diagnosable mental disorders, although a far smaller proportion — about 6 percent — has a severe one, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Close to 50 percent of Americans will have a mental disorder in their lifetimes.

But only about 36 percent of those with mental disorders receive treatment in a given year, according to the NIMH. Arzubi works in an emergency room. Because of a shortage of psychiatric beds for children, there are some days when children get stuck in the emergency room, waiting for a more suitable placement. That’s not uncommon at other hospitals, too.

“Can you imagine if the same thing was happening to kids with an asthma attack?” Arzubi said. “Can you imagine if the same thing was happening to a kid who had a complication from diabetes? That would be national news.” Access to mental health care has long been a problem, whether because of a lack of hospital beds and spots in community-based programs, or because of difficulty getting insurance coverage for it.

“I can’t tell you how difficult some of the issues we face with regard to access to care can be,” Schwartz said.

“We’ve had a patient who attempted suicide by jumping, and we were asked by the [insurance company] reviewer, ‘From what floor?’” Role of public schools Federal and state laws require “parity” in insurance coverage

of mental health care, prohibiting insurers from placing limits or costs on mental health or substance abuse services that are more restrictive than those imposed on services for physical illnesses. But advocates, patients and providers say there’s a long way to go before that’s fully realized.

When it comes to young people, the focus should be on the schools, Arzubi said.

“Public schools are literally our mental health system for kids,” he said, citing research that found that 70 percent to 80 percent of children who received mental health services were seen by guidance counselors, school psychologists and other providers working in the education system.

It would help to make sure teachers and other school staff are trained to understand child development and signs of mental illness, Arzubi said.

“Not that they need to be the therapist, but at least we are helping them understand how to access the services for kids,” he said. “I feel like the mental health community can do a better job of trying to support the school folks.” In addition, he said, it would help to formalize relationships between schools and police departments, to ensure that students with mental health issues are not arrested unnecessarily, as well as relationships with emergency psychiatric services, for when students need them.

Diminishing resources There’s also the matter of resources.

Community-based mental health care providers that contract with the state have been struggling with no rate increase in five years. They’re slated to get a 1 percent raise Jan. 1, but many are also facing cuts meant

to address the state’s projected budget deficit.

This year’s state budget includes funding for 21 additional schoolbased health centers, which provide both primary and mental health care.

Arzubi has been working on getting one set up but said it’s been almost impossible because of uncertainty about whether the funds will be there.

Stigma Then there’s the stigma.

It’s a major reason that people don’t seek help for themselves or for their children, even though earlier intervention could help prevent larger problems later on, experts say.

“Parents don’t want to label their children,” Mattias said. “If their child had diabetes, they wouldn’t probably think twice.” One way to reduce the stigma is to have people with mental illness come into contact with those who don’t have it, Mattias said, to be seen as part of their communities.

“We need to move to a place where mental illness is a chronic illness like so many other chronic illnesses that we have,” she said. “We’ve moved there with AIDS. We have not yet moved there with mental illness.”

Robert Davidson, executive director of the Eastern Regional Mental Health Board, said identifying people with mental health needs will require instruments that go beyond blunt questionnaires that ask if you’ve ever thought of killing yourself, which people often won’t admit to.

Town native dedicates life to caring for animals

Some call her a saint; others, a nurse; many, an angel. But Carrie Haggart thinks of herself in the most simple sense, as a mother.

Her home is built for and around her 80 children, who are paralyzed, disabled and sick.

They are horses, dogs, cats, sheep, goats, birds, and a donkey.

Haggart, a Newington native, moved out of her hometown in 1996 to build her dream in a rural part of northeastern Connecticut.

The address will remain anonymous because its disclosure brings a stream of people dropping off animals they can no longer care for and the hospice, as she calls her property — already has a waiting list.

Longtime Newington residents may remember Haggart as the owner of Edward’s Grooming Room, a pet grooming parlor she opened on Day Street in 1984.

While her family still lives in town and her husband still owns Viking Electric Co. on Day Street, Haggart always knew she

wouldn’t own Edward’s forever.

“I started the business to save money so I could do the hospice; this was what I always wanted to do,” she says.

Haggart grew up in a house near the Connecticut Humane Society and can recall a childhood filled with more pets than anyone could imagine.

“We’d go there and take animals suited to be put down. We’d take them into our home or find homes for them.”

As she grew older Haggart worked in animal rescue, in a veterinary office and in the grooming business. But she always adopted people’s sick pets, carrying with her the lifelong dream of someday creating a place for them all to live happily together.

When her hobby got to be too expensive and she had saved up enough money, she built Out to Pasture Farm & Rescue Inc., a nonprofit organization, home, hospice, animal sanctuary.

Pets in peril find comfort at hospice for animals

that’s where they will remain for the rest of their lives.

“Everybody here gets along,” says Haggart, who bestows upon each animal a special name that coincides with their ailment or their nature.

“Unita” for example, (Youneed-a) is a feisty little Chihuahua.

“For the first six months she was here you’d need a muzzle to get near her,” Haggart explains.

While she’d like to help every single sick animal she tries to limit herself to 80 at any given time because that’s what the hospice can accommodate. When another animal hospice in New York closed down recently, Haggart graciously took in five of the animals who lived there.

“It was one of the biggest ones around,” she says.

The remaining animals had to be found homes all across the country — an extremely difficult undertaking, as not many people will take in sick pets.

Haggart makes the rounds all day long administering their medication, serving meals and giving love. “It’s never easy, but if it ever gets easy you know it’s time to stop,” she says.

“They’re like having babies.

There’s never a day off, a holiday or a vacation — this is a lifestyle.”

HealthBridge: Stay granted in labor dispute

HARTFORD — A New Jersey nursing home company says an appeals court has temporarily stayed an order that it reinstate striking Connecticut workers, including those at the Newington facility.

HealthBridge Management said Monday the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted its request for a delay pending its appeal.

Hartford federal Judge Robert Chatigny issued the injunction last week on behalf of the National Labor Relations Board, acting for the New England Health Care Employees Union.

Chatigny declined Friday to stay his injunction ordering the reinstatements by Monday. He said HealthBridge wasn’t bargaining in good faith when it imposed a new contract in June. It hired replacements when 600 workers went on strike.

HealthBridge says it acted legally because negotiations were at an impasse. It also says it doesn’t want to reinstate some unidentified workers it alleges sabotaged its nursing homes.

Shooting renews debate over video game violence

In the days since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., a shell-shocked nation has looked for reasons. The list of culprits include easy access to guns, a strained mental-health system and the “culture of violence” — the entertainment industry’s embrace of violence in movies, TV shows and, especially, video games.

“The violence in the entertainment culture — particularly, with the extraordinary realism to video games, movies now, et cetera — does cause vulnerable young men to be more violent,” Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., said.

“There might well be some direct connection between people who have some mental instability and when they go over the edge — they transport themselves, they become part of one of those video games,” said Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado, where 12 people were killed in a movie theater shooting in July.

There have been unconfirmed media reports that 20-year-old Newtown shooter Adam Lanza enjoyed a range of video games, from the bloody “Call of Duty” series to the innocuous “Dance Dance Revolution.”

But the same could be said for about 80 percent of Americans in Lanza’s age group, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Law enforcement officials haven’t made any connection between Lanza’s possible motives and his interest in games.

The video game industry has been mostly silent since Friday’s attack, in which 20 children and six adults were killed.

The Entertainment Software Association, which represents game publishers in Washington, has yet to respond to politicians’ criticisms.

Hal Halpin, president of the nonprofit Entertainment Consumers Association, said, “I’d simply and respectfully point to the lack of evidence to support any causal link.”

Indians start quick in win over Plainville

NEWINGTON — Newington wrestling got off to a quick start with a 54-30 Central Connecticut Conference crossover victory over Plainville on Thursday afternoon in the Richard E. Rogalski Gymnasium at Newington High School.

The match was the season opener for both teams, and each side had forfeits to deal with. The Blue Devils had four forfeits while the Indians had two. All of the eight matches that were wrestled Thursday were decided by pin.

Newington picked up victories from Brendan Zotti (forfeit at 132), Brian Goncalves (138), Christian Zotti (forfeit at 145), Erik Smith (160), Chris Chorzepa (170), Quinton Birchall (285), Taylor Scavetta (106), Abel Hernandez (forfeit at 120) and Brian Amato (forfeit at 126).

“I think we did very well,” Indians coach Eric Soucy said. “The team definitely meshed, they fed off of each other’s energy.”

Plainville’s wins came from Connor Oakes (152), Kurt Walker (forfeit at 182), Marcus Slivinski (195), Tim West (forfeit at 220) and Timothy

Lister (113). The Blue Devils are a young team that is rebuilding, and fielding a full roster is an issue.

“It all started there with a firstyear kid,” Plainville coach Rusty Spence said, referring to the sophomore Dominic Villardi’s match at 138 against Newington’s Goncalves.

Villardi was nervous in his first varsity match and got caught, then got pinned by Goncalves in 2:22. That was preceded by a Plainville forfeit.

Another forfeit made the score 18-0 Newington. Plainville’s first win came courtesy of a Oakes pin at 152 against Alexander Skonieczny in 4:49.

The Indians came up with two straight pins from Smith and Chorzepa to grab a 30-6 lead. Blue Devil sophomore Mischa Hoffman battled against Chorzepa, but the senior overwhelmed his opponent.

Hoffman did make Chorzepa earn his pin, which he did with 44.2 seconds left in the third period.

“A quiet leader, as he always is, and he leads by example on the mat,” Soucy said of Chorzepa.

Soucy gave credit to both Chorzepa and Hoffman, despite the lopsided score before the pin.

At 285, Birchall got his chance a little over a minute into his match and pinned Plainville’s Dylan Fusco 1:19 in to make the score 36-24 Newington.

“He tried to headlock me, and I just bumped him up a little bit, and took him down,” Birchall said.

The teams traded pins at 106 and 113, then the Indians took the final two matches by forfeit. Newington travels to Berlin Saturday for the Pin Down MDS Tournament. Plainville will take part in its own invitational on Saturday at Plainville High School.

Newington stepped up in victory Newington’s wrestlers put together a good effort on Thursday afternoon in a season opening win over Plainville.

“We did really strong,” Indian senior 285-pounder Quinton Birchall said. “Some of the kids that were supposed to step up stepped up.”

Birchall made quick work of his opponent, picking up a pin with 40.7 seconds left in the first period.

Newington coach Eric Soucy was pleased the efforts of many of his wrestlers, including his senior leader Birchall. Senior Chris Chorzepa, the defending champion at 170 in Class L, the State Open and the New England Championships, picked up right where he left off with a workman like pin of Plainville’s Mischa Hoffman. Chorzepa had to work for his pin, but he constantly picked up points, building a 14-0 lead before getting the pin with 44.2 seconds to go in the third period.

At 106, senior Taylor Scavetta kept working against Tyler Plourde before pinning him with 8.2 seconds left in the first period.

“I’m expecting a lot out of him this year,” Soucy said.

Soucy was even impressed with the effort of Alexander Skonieczny, a junior who was competing in his first match. Skonieczny was pinned by Connor Oakes with 1:11 left in the third period.

“He gave it his all, and the kids fed off of his energy,” Soucy said.

Newington will face a tough schedule throughout this season, so Soucy is hoping he continues to get the same solid effort from his wrestlers.

Morris Indians hold off Southington at home sparks victory

Newington senior guard Zach Morris was a reason why the Indians grabbed a victory over Southington on Tuesday night.

Morris had 11 points and eight rebounds. The six-foot guard played tough inside for Newington and gave the team another person to rebound.

“He worked hard underneath for us,” Indians coach Scot Wenzel said.

Morris snatched several rebounds during Newington’s big 17-0 secondquarter run, and his 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:48 to go in the first half gave the Indians their biggest lead at the time, 18-9. Later in the half, Morris converted a turnover into a lay-up for a 22-9 advantage.

When Newington began struggling in the fourth quarter against Southington’s pressure, Morris did his part to keep his team afloat. Working a nice three-player passing combination, Morris caught a pass in the lane from Tim Blair and found a cutting Bryant Morander for a lay-up and a 38-23 lead. Not long after, Morris made himself available on a nice baseline cut and scored on a lay-up, 40-25.

With 2:30 to go, Morris got open and point guard Michael Koss found him for a lay-up and a 42-33 lead. Morris may have made some mistakes handling the ball at times against the Southington pressure, but he and Newington all did just enough to pick up the win.

In a game of stops and starts, the Newington boys basketball team had just enough to hold off Southington, 45-40 in a Central Connecticut Conference West Division game on Tuesday night in the Richard E. Rogalski Gymnasium.

Neither coach was particularly thrilled with what went on.

“We won the game,” Newington coach Scot Wenzel said. “That’s the positive thing, but we got to take better care of the ball.”

The Indians had 21 turnovers to 20 for the Blue Knights.

Southington trailed 36-18 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored Newington 22-9 in the final eight minutes to make it a game.

“We played with urgency because we realized we were going to lose if we didn’t start making some shots,” Blue Knights coach Bob Lasbury said.

Tim Blair led Newington (2-0) with 13 points while Marcus Guadarrama had 12. Zachary Morris tallied 11 points and eight rebounds while Bryant Morander added five points and 11 rebounds to go along with several blocked shots.

Alex Borofsky led Southington (0-2) with 17 points while Chris Sherwill added 11, all in the fourth quarter.

After a sluggish first quarter that saw both teams combine for as many turnovers as points (12 turnovers, 7-5 Southington score), Newington took control with a 17-5 second. After trailing 9-5 on a pair of Ted Shaw foul shots, the Indians went on a 17-0 spurt over nearly six and a half min-

A Borofsky three-point play with 1.5 seconds left in the half ended the run, but Southington still trailed 22-12 at halftime.

It got worse in the third quarter for the Blue Knights as the Indians extended their lead to 36-18. When Southington wasn’t turning the ball over (18 in three quarters), it was missing shots.

A 10-4 Newington run gave the Indians their biggest lead of the game entering the fourth quarter.

Wenzel was happy with what he got in the second and third quarters, but what he got in the fourth quarter made him unhappy.

“I’m very disappointed with how we came out in the fourth quarter,” Wenzel said.

Southington went on a 15-4 run in the first 4:45 of the fourth quarter to make the score 40-33 Newington.

The Indians pushed the lead back to 10 at 43-33, but the Blue Knights used pressure, forced turnovers, and crawled to 43-40 on a straight-on bank shot by Stephen Barmore with 21.7 to go in the game. Newington had six turnovers in the fourth quarter. Missed foul shots also hurt the Indians.

In the end, Newington was able to do just enough to grab the win. The Indians host a tough East Catholic team on Friday. Southington has a major challenge in its home opener on Friday against Windsor.

FroyoWorld opens, starts serving sweet, healthy treats

Mizuki Tsurumizu wasn’t talking while the flavor lasted.

“It’s better than ice cream,” she told a visitor to the newly opened FroyoWorld, a new frozen yogurt shop on Stanley Street, just a short jaunt from Central Connecticut State University. “And, you don’t feel guilty enjoying it.”

Though the CCSU senior was enjoying vanilla, she said she had tried other flavors.

“Customers tell us they like to mix and match,” said Bryant Gregg, 26, store manager. “With 12 flavors and so many toppings, you can make your own treat.”

The name “Froyo” is derived from a contraction of “frozen yogurt.”

Along one wall of the shop, customer-operated machines dispense exotic flavors from to cheesecake to cookies and cream and beyond.

Current popular flavors are Christmas gingerbread man and Thanksgiving pumpkin pie.

And, with a starting price of 49 cents per ounce, you can be as

creative as you want, sprinkling chocolate chips on mango tart or granola on raspberry razzle.

FroyoWorld had a quiet opening in November, handing out free T-shirts to the first 300 customers.

The front of the shirt says, “Got Froyo?”The back: “Indulge Yourself.”

Customers this week were doing just that, indulging themselves by preparing their own helpings of yogurt or sorbet from one of the store’s 12 machines.

“We only use the freshest products delivered to us and prepared daily,” said Justin Gregg, 28, part-owner, the older of the two brothers. Justin Gregg left the construction business for a career in yogurt. His brother, Bryant, a CCSU graduate, had been a golf course superintendent. The brothers are from Glastonbury.

The Greggs declined to name their franchise sponsor, only saying that they had found the ideal location for them — a former book shop in a plaza with Dunkin’ Donuts and Subway.

Edward J. Sibiga

Edward J. Sibiga, 82, passed away suddenly Dec. 12, 2012, at home in Newington. Ed was the son of the late John and Mary (Gawrys) Sibiga. Born Dec. 14, 1929, in Hartford, Conn., Ed’s family moved to Newington in 1941. He graduated from Newington High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army, having been honorably discharged in 1952. Ed was a UConn graduate Class of 1957 and then retired from Aetna in 1986. Ed liked to read, write poetry, play the harmonica, and had a beautiful bass voice which he lent to a number of church choirs. He belonged to many different organizations, including The Hartford Liederkranz, American Legion, Masons, and had recently joined the Connecticut Poetry Society.

Ed was predeceased by a sister, Helen (Sibiga) Sycz; her husband, George, of Newington, and by his loving companion of many years, Ella F. King. Ed is survived by two nephews, Edward J. Sycz of Newington and John Sycz and his family of New Hampshire, as well as close family friends, William Olesky, Richard, Janina, John, Eric, and Jackie Pentore.
