Real estate Notes U.S. Economic Puzzle
H
ave you ever tried to extract your fingers from one of those Chinese finger puzzle toys before? Made out of woven bamboo, this devious toy would trap a finger in both ends and tighten further the more you struggled to pull away. The more I contemplate our current economic state of affairs the more it feels like our economic fingers are trapped in a similar fashion. For instance, last week we witnessed a cavalcade of jaw dropping economic and geopolitical news yet remained firmly entrenched in our current low volatility (implied CBOE option volume index = 10.85), low yield (10yr Note = 2.606%), and low growth (GDP QOQ prior = -1%) range bound conundrum. Even the troubling news out of Iraq, surprising uptick in perceived inflation (CPI MOM = .4%) and the FOMC meeting (tapering continues unabated) failed to create any additional concrete exogenous market volatility. So where are we headed and can we pull ourselves out of this puzzle? From a shortterm perspective we seem to be locked into a tight window (10yr range 2.5 to 2.8) of typical summer trading malaise. Traders seem to be content on selling overbought rallies and buying inflated yields after a flurry of corrective selling. Although with a full week of quarter end treasury auctions (strong demand?) and a heavy slate of economic news on tap we might finally see some much needed price action filter through the market spectrum. Regardless however, until a safe level of sustainable long-term economic growth is achieved the FOMC will continue to pull taut both ends of this economic puzzle in an attempt to surgically control price movement.
