In the News Oct. 24, 2012 New Housing Starts Surge Housing starts rose to an annual rate of 872,000 last month, which represented a healthy 15% increase from August. The future for housing starts appears promising as well, when considering the nearly 12% increase in new permits issued for the building of private housing in September. Significantly, the year-over-year change in starts and permits has continued its impressive growth. Permits are 45% above their levels from a year ago (a new post-recession high for the annual rate of change). New housing starts have been nearly as strong as well, registering a 35% increase in September vs. a year earlier. The housing recovery is an important sign for the health of the overall US economy. While housing’s direct impact on overall US GDP has declined markedly, it remains significant, particularly as it relates to its “multiplier effect.” Housing impacts the job market and impacts consumer spending as home buyers spend on appliances, furniture, landscaping, etc. A strong housing market is a key component of a strong US economy. Existing Home Sales Decline Existing home sales declined slightly in September from the level in August, inventory continued to tighten and the national median home price recorded its seventh monthly increase in the last year, according to the National Association of Realtors®.
