Bristol Public Library offers summer fun for children By CHLOE WYNNE CORRESPONDENT

BRISTOL — This summer the Bristol Public Library is offering numerous fun-filled ways for children to complete their school’s summer reading requirements. Kids participating in the summer reading program for 2010 receive registration gifts, weekly give-aways, and fabulous raffle prizes for finishing the books on their summer reading list. In addition to these prizes, each elementary school in Bristol competes yearly against each other to finish their reading lists the fastest. Last year, Stafford Elementary School was the winner and as a result the principal awarded them

with a sleep over for the entire school. These fun-filled prizes provide further motivation for all the kids, said staff. Valerie Toner, children’s supervisor at the Bristol Public Library, said the prizes are a nice incentive. “If they read, they’re more likely to win a prize,” she said. “They definitely enjoy it.” The first week of the program was the library’s busiest yet. More than 1,000 kids and young adults registered to take part in the Summer Reading Program for 2010. When children register, they are given a summer reading bag filled with goody’s like a free book, an Applebees Bookworm Card, A Double Dare Challenge from

One way the library decided to kick off the summer was with the Splish Splash Reading Bash June 30. Librarians and teachers want to encourage children to enjoy reading and have a good time discussing the stories they hear and read. Those who attended were provided with crafts, food and fun. “Kids absolutely loved it,” says Amy Litke, head of children’s services at the library. “They got to make cookies and bake things, and many of them look forward to this event every year.” It kicked off their summer reading program, which is known this year as “Make a Splash at Your Library.” See LIBRARY, Page 5

Library offers fun for the little ones

The last day to join the program was July 9, so now many children are working hard to finish their summer reading. There are many other children’s programs being offered throughout July and August. Every Wednesday at 10 a.m., story time is offered for children ages 3 through 5. Children can enjoy a story that is age appropriate with their friends while their parents can either drop them off or wait in an adjoining room. Family Story Hour is also popular and is held Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. Families can listen to a story together and then participate in a craft as part of the program. Movie nights happen Tuesday nights at the New Britain Public Library. Librarians post the movies they will be showing in the Children’s’ department every week. The Plainville Public Library will also sponsor movie nights on Tuesdays. Showings include “Where the Wild Things Are,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Alice in Wonderland” during the month of July. The Friends of the New Britain Public Library also put together programs that involve special visitors.

The library has had a magician visit already this summer, and there are plenty more exciting performers to come. July 22, the Hampstead Stage will be enacting the adventures of Jim Hawkins in “reasure Island.” Children aged 3 through 8 should enjoy this presentation, according to staff. July 29, entertainer Chris Keithan visits as his character “Mr. Gym” at 10 a.m. He will provide a morning filled with songs and dance for children. The library will be ending July with Bubble-Mania July 29 as well. The comedy show will be presented by bubbleologist Casey Carle at 6:30 p.m., and the whole family is invited. Call the New Britain Public Library at (860) 224-3155 or check out the library’s website for more information, at http://www. nbpl.info/. Rob Heyl
