A detailed plan for the future use of the Wethersfield Cove will be discussed and voted on by the Town Council at their meeting this Monday. The document was created to enhance grant opportunities for the town’s marina, which serves as an inlet to the Connecticut River and a recreational area. Volume 54, No. 01

Known as the Harbor Management Plan, the document outlines the Cove’s existing condition, as well as the town’s goals for the area and policies regarding the area’s management. The Harbor Management Commission spent the last year drafting the plan, the sole charge they were imparted with upon their formation in August 2011. They began last September using a model plan provided by the State Department of Environmental Protection, assistance from the Army Corps of Engineers, and input from residents. As Farmers Market closes, big plans are in the works

The 2012 season celebrated its last day the Thursday before Christmas, with dozens of visitors hoping to stock up on the specialty items they can’t find at the regular grocery. and gourmet food and craft vendors bringing their goods every Thursday. “I think moving to our new location at the Solomon Welles House was the very best thing we could do,” Jarm said on the last market day, while wishing goodbye to all the loyal customers she’s become friendly with over the years. “We’ve gained a lot of vendors and our goal is to continue to grow, but we really want to concentrate on doing some more events,” she added, recalling the success of the fall’s Farm-to-Table Dinner, which featured a sit-down family-style meal outside, made with all market ingredients. When the 2013 market opens, a couple new and exciting things will be introduced. Although Jarm is always brainstorming — nothing is quite set in stone yet. “I limit her to one crazy idea a day,” jokes Sacks. So far, extended hours are very likely. “A lot of the feedback we get is that people want us to stay open later,” explains Jarm, who hopes to be able to keep the market running a few extra hours at least once monthly. The thread of kindness Women’s group member has delivered more than 800 blankets to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Medical Center By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER

Surrounded by white lab coats and big, intimidating machines tracking your baby’s heart rate and breathing, you’re scared and overwhelmed – hoping for any sign of good news. All of a sudden a woman with a warm smile and kind eyes approaches and after an embrace, she hands you a flannel pink teddy bear-patterned blanket. “We stitched this with love and prayers,” she tells you. Suddenly

your world is a bit brighter. Newington resident Edyie Steimer, a member of the GFWC Newington/Wethersfield Woman’s Club, has delivered a total of 826 blankets to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center since 2006. Although they’re not the only group to donate blankets to the families struggling with sick babies, the club’s donations are frequent and many. Their goal is to reach 1000 blankets, hopefully within a few years.

“That’s just the first goal; I want to do this as long as I possibly can. WETHERSFIELD POST and admiration for the doctors and nurses who work with the families on a daily basis, constantly surrounded by heartbreak and small successes – everything that comes along with having a sick infant. “We have a wonderful relationship with the hospital; the staff is so loving and nice.” Milena Frazer, RN, has facilitated blanket donations since the beginning. She always knew the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was where she wanted to work. In the 32 beds there are all kinds of babies: many premature, some with birth complications, jaundice, heart defects, breathing difficulties. “It’s usually not a planned thing,” Frazer said of these circumstances. “The families are usually shocked and upset, stunned by having to come there, so Edyie’s blankets offer something that just reminds them – this is their baby, it’s a boy or girl, it’s going to be okay,” she continued. “It normalizes the baby and makes them seem like less of a sick child.” Most of the babies have to remain

undressed so their breathing can be monitored properly. Having a blanket beneath them or at their bedside provides comfort to parents. In rare cases there are infants that nurses and parents know are going to pass away. The hospital makes tiny memory boxes for them, filled with clay imprints of their hands and feet and other keepsakes. If they were swaddled in one of the blankets, it too is put in the box. “I have families tell me later they still take the blankets out to remember their babies,” Frazer explained. “To have something that’s not hospital-white is really special to them.” The GFWC Newington/ Wethersfield Woman’s Club buys all their own fabric and makes the blankets in workshops all throughout the year. Now that holiday shopping season is over, parents of young children have the opportunity to do a different kind of shopping: for preschools. The Cora J. Belden Library in Rocky Hill has invited more than 20 preschools and daycare centers from all across the region to a family expo next Wednesday evening. It’s an opportunity for parents of impending preschoolers to meet with prospective school staff and discuss everything from program philosophies to tuition. HARTFORD (AP) — State Democrats and a Republican state lawmaker criticized the GOP leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday for failing to take up federal financial help to communities and residents hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement that spending money now on public works would help reduce the cost of damage from future storms. “This federal DANNEL MALLOY assistance would Governor have been a big help to communities across the state,” he said. “But for reasons only the House GOP leadership can explain, that aid has been postponed to the next Congress.” The U.S. Senate approved a $60.4 billion measure last week to help states recover from the storm that pounded the Northeast, destroying homes and businesses, crippling transportation systems, and killing 140 people. Connecticut is asking for at least $3.2 billion to repair and strengthen its infrastructure.

HEALTH DISTRICT SELLING BICYCLE HELMETS: With the holidays just around the corner, a great gift idea for the active child or adult in your life is a helmet. The Central Connecticut Health District has been selling low cost bicycle helmets to residents since 1997. Currently, the Health District is offering bicycle helmets for sale. As with any athletic activity, safety should always be of primary concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury, resulting in 52,000 deaths, 275,000 hospitalizations, and 1.4 million people receiving treatment in emergency departments every year. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) account for a third (30.5 percent) of all injury-related deaths in the United States. Fortunately, many of these injuries can be prevented or minimized with the use of properlyfitted helmets. The helmets come in a variety of colors for children and adults, ranging from toddler sizes to adult XL. The cost for the helmets is $10. Wethersfield Panera Bread aids in Place of Grace gift drive

A holiday gift drive at Panera Bread bakery-cafes in Bristol, Canton, Farmington, Newington and Wethersfield have made the seasom brighter for families at Place of Grace, 55 New Park Ave., Hartford. More than 150 presents were collected from Panera customers and employees. For the third consecutive year, customers participated in the gift drive by simply going to the counter at their local Panera, selecting a gift tag with a specific child’s first name on it, and then purchasing the “wish list” items noted. Each gift tag is special with a different child, age and list of gifts on it. Gifts were then brought back to the respective cafes by participating customers early last week in a gift bag with the gift tag attached. Grace Episcopal Church’s Place of Grace runs a food pantry which provides groceries for approximately 200 needy families on a weekly basis and a clothing swap where donated clothes are provided to local families. Toys

for Christmas are also collected for the Place of Grace’s pantry clients. Families register separately for this service and every effort is made to give the children presents that they need and want. Each year, between 225 and 250 children are given gifts. The participating bakery-cafes and their nonprofit partners are as follows: Waterford and Groton, are partnering with the Riverfront Children’s Center based in Groton; Lisbon, is working with the United Community & Family Services in Jewett City; Newington, Wethersfield, Farmington, Bristol and Canton, are participating with Place of Grace based in Hartford; bakerycafes in Glastonbury, Manchester (Deming Street) and Manchester (Shoppes at Buckland Hills), are working with the ECHN Family Development Center in Manchester; West Hartford, is participating with The Bridge Family Center in West Hartford; Enfield, is teaming up with The Enfield Food Shelf, Over the past 10 years, Panera
