Council to vote on Harbor Management Plan, which would outline policy for harbor By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
A detailed plan for the future use of the Wethersfield Cove will be discussed and voted on by the Town Council at their meeting this Monday. The document was created to enhance grant opportunities for the town’s marina, which serves as an inlet to the Connecticut River and a recreational area. Volume 54, No. 01

Known as the Harbor Management Plan, the document outlines the Cove’s existing condition, as well as the town’s goals for the area and policies regarding the area’s management. The Harbor Management Commission spent the last year drafting the plan, the sole charge they were imparted with upon their formation in August 2011. They began last September using a model plan provided by the State Department of Environmental Protection, assistance from the Army Corps of Engineers, and input from residents. According to Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Bagley, Stephen Whitaker the finished plan will assist the Luminaria, which are small paper lanterns, lined Wethersfield Cove Dec. 22. As Farmers Market closes, big plans are in the works
Extended hours, kid-friendly activities, movie presentations may be featured in the spring By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
You’ll have to find other ways to get your beef bourguignon pasties, jalapeno jam and locally-grown zucchini now that the Wethersfield Farmers Market has closed up shop until May. The 2012 season celebrated its last day the Thursday before Christmas, with dozens of visitors hoping to stock up on the specialty items they can’t find at the regular grocery. Market Masters Stephanie Jarm and Doug Sacks regarded this year as the market’s best season yet, with over 30 Connecticut-based farmers
For its 2012 season, the Wethersfield Farmers Market featured products from more than 30 Connecticutbased farmers.
and gourmet food and craft vendors bringing their goods every Thursday. “I think moving to our new location at the Solomon Welles House was the very best thing we could do,” Jarm said on the last market day, while wishing goodbye to all the loyal customers she’s become friendly with over the years. “We’ve gained a lot of vendors and our goal is to continue to grow, but we really want to concentrate on doing some more events,” she added, recalling the success of the fall’s Farm-to-Table Dinner, which featured a sit-down family-style meal outside, made with all market ingredients. When the 2013 market opens, a couple new and exciting things will be introduced. Although Jarm is always brainstorming — nothing is quite set in stone yet. “I limit her to one crazy idea a day,” jokes Sacks. So far, extended hours are very likely. “A lot of the feedback we get is that people want us to stay open later,” explains Jarm, who hopes to be able to keep the market running a few extra hours at least once monthly. Regular hours are 3 to 6 p.m. And then there’s the film thing. Picture it: before you pick up Thursday evening dinner, sit down

There’s also the possibility of more kid-friendly activities at the market (in the same vein as the llama petting zoo) and of course, more outdoor banquets. The Wethersfield Farmers Market will open for its 2013 sea-

One of the reasons for violence in our country is the absence of love in the home. If a child does not experience love, he or she will be hurt and react with anger. Recently, we sent a CD called “Yellow Dancing Butterflies” with songs titled “I’m Lovable” and “I’m Special” to a school where there was violence, fights and bullying. The principle played the CD over the intercom and the children began singing “I’m Lovable” and “I’m Special” because they realized God made them lovable and special. Their self-esteem began to change and so did their behavior.

The thread of kindness Women’s group member has delivered more than 800 blankets to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Medical Center By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
Surrounded by white lab coats and big, intimidating machines tracking your baby’s heart rate and breathing, you’re scared and overwhelmed – hoping for any sign of good news. All of a sudden a woman with a warm smile and kind eyes approaches and after an embrace, she hands you a flannel pink teddy bear-patterned blanket. “We stitched this with love and prayers,” she tells you. Suddenly
your world is a bit brighter. Newington resident Edyie Steimer, a member of the GFWC Newington/Wethersfield Woman’s Club, has delivered a total of 826 blankets to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center since 2006. Although they’re not the only group to donate blankets to the families struggling with sick babies, the club’s donations are frequent and many. Their goal is to reach 1000 blankets, hopefully within a few years.
“That’s just the first goal; I want to do this as long as I possibly can. It warms my heart, especially where we are now in the world … this is something so positive,” says Steimer, who brings along a different club member each time she makes a delivery so that everyone can have the heartwarming experience of greeting blanket recipients. “It is so wonderful,” she says. “I feel I get more out of it; it’s a way for parents to recognize their little FF218317 Job boyNo.: or girl.” And Steimer has utmost respect Hartford, CT Engagement City:

WETHERSFIELD POST and admiration for the doctors and nurses who work with the families on a daily basis, constantly surrounded by heartbreak and small successes – everything that comes along with having a sick infant. “We have a wonderful relationship with the hospital; the staff is so loving and nice.” Milena Frazer, RN, has facilitated blanket donations since the beginning. She always knew the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was where she wanted to work. In the 32 beds there are all kinds of babies: many premature, some with birth complications, jaundice, heart defects, breathing difficulties. “It’s usually not a planned thing,” Frazer said of these circumstances. “The families are usually shocked and upset, stunned by having to come there, so Edyie’s blankets offer something that just reminds them – this is their baby, it’s a boy or girl, it’s going to be okay,” she continued. “It normalizes the baby and makes them seem like less of a sick child.” Most of the babies have to remain
undressed so their breathing can be monitored properly. Having a blanket beneath them or at their bedside provides comfort to parents. In rare cases there are infants that nurses and parents know are going to pass away. The hospital makes tiny memory boxes for them, filled with clay imprints of their hands and feet and other keepsakes. If they were swaddled in one of the blankets, it too is put in the box. “I have families tell me later they still take the blankets out to remember their babies,” Frazer explained. “To have something that’s not hospital-white is really special to them.” The GFWC Newington/ Wethersfield Woman’s Club buys all their own fabric and makes the blankets in workshops all throughout the year. The House Appropriations Committee drafted a smaller, $27 billion measure and a vote was expected before Congress’ term ends, but House Speaker John Boehner pulled the bill on Tuesday. And U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, a Connecticut Democrat, called upon Boehner to schedule a vote releasing the money before the 112th Congress ends at noon Thursday. “Mr. Speaker, reverse your decision now and let’s do the right thing by our people,” Himes said. Rep. Joe Courtney said police and firefighters responded immediately to fires and flooding, Obama declared areas in the Northeast a disaster area to qualify for federal aid and the Senate approved funding. “The only place that hasn’t acted is the House of Representatives, which last night in the dark of the night, the speaker announced that he was abandoning the people of Northeastern America and allowing the Hurricane Sandy relief bill to die.”

HARTFORD (AP) — State Democrats and a Republican state lawmaker criticized the GOP leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday for failing to take up federal financial help to communities and residents hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement that spending money now on public works would help reduce the cost of damage from future storms. “This federal DANNEL MALLOY assistance would Governor have been a big help to communities across the state,” he said. “But for reasons only the House GOP leadership can explain, that aid has been postponed to the next Congress.” The U.S. Senate approved a $60.4 billion measure last week to help states recover from the storm that pounded the Northeast, destroying homes and businesses, crippling transportation systems, and killing 140 people. Connecticut is asking for at least $3.2 billion to repair and strengthen its infrastructure.

ON JaNuaRY 9tH the Women of the Workforce (WOW) will begin at 8AM at the Tennis and Fitness Center of Rocky Hill, located at 1000 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Janice Flanigan, Fitness Center Manager will lead the group that day. ON JaNuaRY 23Rd our popular Gathering Place series returns to the Lodge at Cold Springs, 50 Cold Springs Rd., EXECUTIVE Rocky Hill. The Gathering Place, which starts at 7:30AM, DIRECTOR now includes a Leads Exchange in addition to some PAUL CARR first-class networking! Please RSVP to execdir@rhchamber if planning to attend these exciting events. I encourage your continued support of the rapidly expanding "Chamber Page". My ultimate goal is to build more content regarding Chamber matters, and news articles of interest to Rocky Hill residents in order to return the Rocky Hill Post as a stand-alone publication, like it had been in the past. Advertising on the Chamber Page has expanded rapidly as this project has progressed. A single Chamber Page already has expanded to two in a matter of weeks. We expect to produce three Chamber Pages in just a few more weeks, then four! As this process continues to evolve it will be critical that advertising continue in support of the costs involved in doing this project. In the end the Chamber will have two very important means of communications; its own Chamber Weekly email, and the Chamber Page which will reach local businesses who are not currently Chamber members. Of course - joining the Chamber remains as easy as a visit to our website http://www.rhchamber.org/ click on "join", complete the short information form; hit ENTER when done, and your application will appear on my computer screen seconds later!

HEALTH DISTRICT SELLING BICYCLE HELMETS: With the holidays just around the corner, a great gift idea for the active child or adult in your life is a helmet. The Central Connecticut Health District has been selling low cost bicycle helmets to residents since 1997. Currently, the Health District is offering bicycle helmets for sale. As with any athletic activity, safety should always be of primary concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury, resulting in 52,000 deaths, 275,000 hospitalizations, and 1.4 million people receiving treatment in emergency departments every year. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) account for a third (30.5 percent) of all injury-related deaths in the United States. Fortunately, many of these injuries can be prevented or minimized with the use of properlyfitted helmets. The helmets come in a variety of colors for children and adults, ranging from toddler sizes to adult XL. The cost for the helmets is $10. The bicycle helmets are available for purchase at the main office of the Central Connecticut Health District at 505 Silas Deane Hwt., Wethersfield. For further information, contact the Health District, serving the towns of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill, and Wethersfield, by calling (860) 721-2822 or by visiting our website at www.ccthd.org.

Wethersfield Panera Bread aids in Place of Grace gift drive
A holiday gift drive at Panera Bread bakery-cafes in Bristol, Canton, Farmington, Newington and Wethersfield have made the seasom brighter for families at Place of Grace, 55 New Park Ave., Hartford. More than 150 presents were collected from Panera customers and employees. For the third consecutive year, customers participated in the gift drive by simply going to the counter at their local Panera, selecting a gift tag with a specific child’s first name on it, and then purchasing the “wish list” items noted. Each gift tag is special with a different child, age and list of gifts on it. Gifts were then brought back to the respective cafes by participating customers early last week in a gift bag with the gift tag attached. Grace Episcopal Church’s Place of Grace runs a food pantry which provides groceries for approximately 200 needy families on a weekly basis and a clothing swap where donated clothes are provided to local families. Toys
for Christmas are also collected for the Place of Grace’s pantry clients. Families register separately for this service and every effort is made to give the children presents that they need and want. Each year, between 225 and 250 children are given gifts. The participating bakery-cafes and their nonprofit partners are as follows: Waterford and Groton, are partnering with the Riverfront Children’s Center based in Groton; Lisbon, is working with the United Community & Family Services in Jewett City; Newington, Wethersfield, Farmington, Bristol and Canton, are participating with Place of Grace based in Hartford; bakerycafes in Glastonbury, Manchester (Deming Street) and Manchester (Shoppes at Buckland Hills), are working with the ECHN Family Development Center in Manchester; West Hartford, is participating with The Bridge Family Center in West Hartford; Enfield, is teaming up with The Enfield Food Shelf, Over the past 10 years, Panera
Panera Bread staff delivered gifts, collected during the company’s annual gift drive, to Place of Grace, a Hartford food pantry which provides groceries for approximately 200 families per week.
Bread/HBG has helped collect and donate over $648,453 to its five Operation Dough-Nation charity partners, as well as contributions to Haiti Relief, local hurricane and tornado relief through the American Red
Cross and breast cancer awareness through the company’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign with area hospital partners. Panera Bread/ HBG has also donated $3 million dollars a year in bakery items to churches, shelters and food
pantries as part of its “Day End” program. Panera Bread/HBG has a Donations Department where organizations can request food donations for various nonprofit fundraisers and events.
Drunken Noodles, Greek pizza and other favorite area dishes
A few of your year-end comments on restaurants around the area: Mae Kong Thai Restaurant, 26 Main St., New Britain; (860) 505-0791: “I’ve been going to Mae Kong for a few months now, and I can honestly say that if anything, the place is getting better. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and TASTINGS the staff is all smiles. But the real draw is the food; the curry is especially delicious (in all its colors) and the chef knows how to get the level of heat just right depending on your palate. The portions are perfect in size; it is just enough to satisfy even the hungriest patrons without overflowing the plate. My personal favorite is the Drunken Noodles and coconut soup, but I also highly recommend their spring rolls for appetizers, and their Thai Iced Tea is banging. In short, it is my favorite restaurant in New Britain, and maybe even the whole Hartford area. You won’t be disappointed.” — A Google user on Google+ Center Pizza, 81 North Main St., Bristol; (860) 583-4000: “My family and I stopped in hungry and craving pizza, our order of buffalo wings came out promptly and exceeded expectations, the waitress was
consistently refilling our drinks when necessary and checking in. The pizza was very fresh with a great sauce and tasty crust. If you like Greek pizza this place is perfect. Great family environment and great staff. I would rate this place 10 out of 10. Looking forward to stopping by again this weekend.” — amy 1775 on ezlocal.com.
The Eatery, 1515 Wolcott Road, Wolcott; (203) 879-7400: “I will be honest. We really were not interested in visiting this place. It is in a strip mall and can easily be missed. … Once I walked inside all my assumptions went right out the window. First off is staff, I was greeted by a lovely woman named Terri. She is awesome. Now for food, everything I have had here has been phenomenal. I recommend this place to all my friends and everyone keeps coming back with great comments and loves the food. Price is right as well. — steve4134 on tripadvisor.com Rivals Bar and Grill, 2095-2175 Berlin Turnpike, Newington; (860) 436-3550: “I was looking to watch a Steelers game and found that Rivals on the Berlin Turnpike carries all the games. My husband and I went down there, we had a blast!!! Shea on the bar was so much fun; the crowd was really fun. They have power hours which
Oumaphone Siboriboun, owner of Mae Kong Thai Restaurant in downtown New Britain
could not be beat. Worth the stop.” — cate at the end of the month. Just email your ITSIL.ysa on tripadvisor.com comments to dining@centralctcommunciations.com, fax (860) 225-2611 or mail to the Have a special restaurant you like?
