Bond Commission OKs $1.1M for dredging of Cove By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
Although the Wethersfield Cove’s early years as a bustling shipping port have been over since the flood of 1692, a recent award of state funding gives the town marina an opportunity to live on as a boating destination. State Representative Russ Morin (D-Wethersfield) recently announced $1.1 million was approved by the State Bond Commission to dredge the cove’s channel into the Connecticut River. channel is only 2 feet in some places, and the plan, to be executed by the Army Corps of Engineers and the State Department of Transportation, is to dredge a 60-ft. wide, 6-ft. deep channel. “When people think of Wethersfield, they think of the Cove,” Morin said. “It is not the hub of economic activity of days gone by — tall ships have been replaced by Boston Whalers and other pleasure boats — but the cove is an important part of the history and fabric of our town. This project ensures boaters will have their safe harbor in Wethersfield for years to come.” The Army Corps is currently in the process of securing permits for the project.
