“They’re amazing, amazing kids,” said Principal Mario Almeida on a recent day, following up an inquiry on James being awarded a corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship by the Bristol-Myers-Squibb Foundation, Inc. Rocky Hill High School has the pleasure of the boys’ presence for only half the school day, however — since they attend the Greater Hartford Academy of Math and Sciences in the afternoon. Next year, they’ll be making marks on other schools and towns, as they’re both headed to college in the fall.

Me Too program volunteers provide education in D.R.

Those who attend the K-6 FUCPE School have to pay for attendance, uniforms and school supplies. The school is located in a slum where Haitian refugees came to make a better life for themselves. Because the closest public schools are located closer to the city, there is no way for local kids to receive free education.

Kindergarten and first-graders attend mornings, while grades

two through six come in the afternoon. Of the 230 students at the school, 70 are currently being sponsored.

DiPietro asked the Pawlaks to find a child for her to sponsor before she made the trip and upon her arrival in the Dominican Republic this April, he was there waiting.

“To meet him was awesome,” she said.

DiPietro, whose daytime job is the Central Connecticut Health District’s health educator, talked to local women about health care, including the prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases. On her next trip, she hopes to talk more with the kids about regular hygiene — the importance of hand washing, mouth care, etc.

The minimum ‘Me Too’ sponsorship is $66 a year, which covers attendance and test fees. The maximum sponsorship is $132, which also covers a child’s uniform and school supplies.

Resident receives Bronze Star for an act of courage in 1945

He waited 70 years to receive the Bronze Star Medal he earned during World War II and this past Tuesday, Joseph Luszczak, 96, finally held it in his hands.

Congressman John B. Larson presented the Wethersfield resident with the Bronze Star, among eight other medals and badges at the Pitkin Community Center Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by the Luszczak family.

Luszczak entered the service in 1943, serving in ‘B’ Company, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. He held several occupations, including supply NCO, rifleman and squad leader.

Not only did he earn the rank of sergeant, but Luszczak also performed an act of courage before leaving the service in 1945 that was never officially recognized — until this week.

Amidst a bloody battle, Luszczak saved his battalion, and in turn, earned the Bronze Star Medal for his valor. Days later, his commanding officer and others were killed.

His service ended in 1945 after having never received the decorations.

“He’s told us the story so many times over the years,” remembers his son Tom, who decided to write a letter to the congressman requesting the medals. “I told him and he said to me, “Maybe this is my chance,” Tom added.

That’s when the project fell into the hands of Ryan Dion, veterans case worker for the Wounded Warrior Project.

“I started to pursue this and it took a little while, but the Bronze Star finally came in in March, then we had to figure out a good time to make this presentation,” explained

Dion, a Purple Heart recipient himself. “We couldn’t have picked a finer day,” he added.

The congressman made a formal presentation to Luczszak beside his family, including his wife, Helen; his son, Tom; and his daughters, Ann and Rita Luszczak.

“You don’t think of it when you’re there, but when you get a medal like this…” the honoree said, before looking up at the congressman and proudly stating, “Thank you.”

“This is so good for the family, something they can pass down,” Larson said after the ceremony. “Just to see the joy on this man’s face — that’s why they’re the greatest

generation ever,” he added.

GFWC Fashion Show raises over $5K for communities

A show of beauty, coveted prizes, tasty food and jazz.

That’s the formula for the GFWC Newington/Wethersfield’s Woman’s Club Annual Fashion Show, and the sum of it all translates into generous community support.

Almost 200 guests enjoyed the occasion, held this past Sunday at the Sheraton in Rocky Hill. It’s the club’s biggest fundraiser, and this year it raised over $5,500 to be shared by a variety of local organizations and kids.

“People had a really, really good time; it was a lot of fun,” said Fashion Show Chairperson and Emcee, Edyie Steimer, a longtime club member.

While the day goes to benefit the towns of Newington and Wethersfield, it’s businesses from those towns that contribute to a raffle and silent auction, so the generosity ultimately runs full-circle.

This year, attendees vied for almost 50 different prizes — everything from gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses to a 1934 Singer sewing machine — a particularly sought-after item.

Local artist Pat Tanger donated a pastel drawing; Dana Spicer, owner of Wethersfield boutique Heart of the Country — a Vera Bradley handbag; Healthtrax, a six-month family membership. The list of donors goes on and on. Door prizes included an overnight stay at the Sheraton, a wine basket and more.

But the real show-stopper of the banquet was a runway fashion show featuring local residents sporting designs from Dress Barn. The ladies had the pleasure of hair and

makeup services before their debut, from local beauty professionals Melissa Hurd, of Mary K and Mary Goldman, of Salon 363. Models included Newington resident Athina Loveland, a Zumba instructor at Healthtrax, who received a total makeover, even donating her hair to Locks of Love.

Thanks to these efforts, a graduating senior from Newington and another from Wethersfield will each be awarded $1,000 scholarships this year. Since its creation of a scholarship fund years ago, the club has given a total of $14,000 to local kids.

But members also recognize other community needs, including the Social and Human Services Departments in both towns, as well as Safe Graduation parties, the towns’ food banks and other enrich-

Additionally, tickets may be purchased at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main St., open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. On tour day, tickets will be available only at Tour Central at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center.

All the homes on the tour are located in the historic district of Old Wethersfield, some within walking distance of each other, making it possible to see more than one home at each stop. One of the homes is a turreted brick Victorian on Hartford Avenue, built in 1887, that retains many of its original interior features including colorful fireplaces, built-in cabinets, preserved canvas ceilings and flooring. Its kitchen has been renovated, but retains the original tin ceiling and pantry.

Another home is a late 18th century colonial home on Main Street, originally the home of Capt. Francis Bulkley, his wife Elizabeth and their sons. The off-center colonial features asymmetrical windows and chimney, with later additions of a front porch and back ell. The present owners have furnished the home with antiques such as an original Peter Blinn sunflower chest, two Wethersfield highboys and a sideboard that once belonged to Wethersfield’s Colonel John Chester of Revolutionary War fame.

The oldest home on the tour is the Appleton Robbins House, built in 1720. Built into the side of a hill, the home looks like a classic colonial style house from the front, but a single story gambrel roof cape from the back. It features three bake ovens, including one of the earliest types located in the back of the fireplace. The kitchen was redone in 2010, and, while it is a modern space, its style is in keeping with the feel of a colonial home.

Dorene Ciarcia, has been at work since last fall, selecting homes for the tour, researching the history of each home and working with the homeowners on details for tour day.

The tour book, which all visitors will receive as their ticket, will have brief backgrounds on the houses and insight into the renovations and restorations they have undergone.

In addition, guides in each of the rooms on display may provide specific information on that home’s special features.

There will be a tour boutique in the restored carriage house of the historic Silas Robbins House at 185 Broad St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on tour day. The boutique will also be open from Friday to Sunday that weekend. The Wethersfield Academy of the Arts at 413 Hartford Ave., will be open for visitors that day as well.

Saturday, June 8, is also Connecticut Open House Day and a number of the historical society’s properties will be open free of charge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. These include the Capt. James Francis House, 120 Hartford Ave.; the Hurlbut-Dunham House, 212 Main Street, adjacent to the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center; and the Cove Warehouse at the north end of Main Street on the Wethersfield Cove. The Griswoldville Chapel is celebrating its 140th birthday by opening for tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. The chapel is located on Griswold Road, next to the firehouse.

Derby Day at Beleden: A new Bristol tradition

BRISTOL — A mansion on Federal Hill will open for a few hours Saturday for a Kentucky Derby party.

The Bristol Historical Society will hold its second annual Derby Day fundraiser at Beleden, an estate that was built in 1910 for William and Emily Sessions.

Tom LaPorte, a society member, said the current owner of the home has generously offered to open the house for a party of up to 100 people. Last year, the event drew 80 people, and LaPorte would like to have a full house this year.

“There will be finger food from Nuchie’s, great desserts from Super Natural Market, period music from Jean and Bill Degan, tours of the house and raffles,” he said. “Women are encouraged to wear elaborate hats and there will be prizes for the most decorated and most original.”

The race will be broadcast on a large television set. Beer and wine will also be served.

LaPorte said Sessions was a successful industrialist.

He and his wife moved to a home on Bellevue Avenue in 1878. Sessions and his father, John Humphrey Sessions, bought a small foundry on Laurel Street which eventually grew to become Sessions Foundry

As the family prospered, they decided they wanted a larger home.

Region keeps stride after Newtown, Boston tragedies

like the ‘First Thanksgiving’ and all the images associated with the Revolution,” she said, “convinced people that there really was something called New England and that it mattered.”

Now, in just a four-month span, a harsh new chapter has been added to that long, distinctive history.

New England scenes have been the backdrop for two body blows of malevolent mass carnage — the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown that killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15 that killed three people and injured more than 260.

Yet even amid the horror, the nation and world again glimpsed the old New England spirit and solidarity.

The bombings were a reminder of Boston’s role as de facto capital of New England. Its sports teams, most notably the Red Sox, are avidly followed in all six states. Its marathon draws competitors from across the region (and of course far beyond) — and attracts thousands of regional spectators, too.

An eight-member group from Newtown competed in the marathon, seeking support for a

scholarship fund to benefit siblings of the shooting victims.

Before the start, there were 26 seconds of silence in honor of the Connecticut victims, and each mile of the race was dedicated to one of them.

So the pain has been shared — and so has the post-bombing effort to respond resiliently. Members of the Newtown group said they would expand their efforts to also support the bombing victims.

“We’re looking for things to pull us together, and the tragedy gave us a focal point — the more so that it happened at one of our defining regional events,” said Boston University Professor William Moore, a cultural history specialist affiliated with BU’s Program in American and New England Studies.

At least in living memory, New England has not experienced a gun rampage as deadly as the Newtown shootings nor a terrorist attack on par with the marathon bombings.

Yet the region has by no means been immune from calamities.

"After thirty years here, we are blessed," said Athanasios Tsombanos, co-owner of Village Pizza on Main Street in Old Wethersfield.

Art and his brother Ioannis Tsombanos started the bright and airy full service restaurant, with indoor and outdoor seating, three decades ago on May 25. As one gun-maker vows to leave, others look to adapt

PTR Industries, which makes semi-automatic rifles in Bristol, is poised to move out of state according to a posting on its website.

Mark Malkowski, owner of New Britain-based gun manufacturer Stag Arms, expects to lose $1 million in sales by June 1 when state leaders are scheduled to provide full details on which firearms are legal under new gun-control legislation.

He is hoping a prototype of his altered AR-15-style weapon will allow him to continue to do business in the state.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Sca-lise, owner of New Britain’s Ammunition Storage Compo-nents, is sitting on $60,000 to $90,000 worth of high-capacity magazine orders until he receives a definitive answer on whether his firm can legally ship the magazines to customers. “It’s affecting commerce tremendously,” Scalise said. “But I’m not going to put my customers in jeopardy.”

But according to Michael Lawlor, undersecretary for criminal justice of the state Office of Policy and Management, the law only prohibits manufacturers and others from selling or giving assault weapons or high-capacity magazines to civilians in Connecticut.

“They still can ship, they still can sell to law enforcement,” he said.

“Every time in the past 25 years a gun-control law had passed, they say the exact same stuff every time.

they say will happen isn’t true. It’s not complicated, it’s not confusing, the world of guns is changing.”

Since the web posting on April 9, PTR has said nothing about its plans.

PTR’s owner did not return phone calls Tuesday, but city and state officials who have spoken with him say he is unwavering in his stance.

The company said in the post that many of its nearly 50 workers intend to move along with the firm, which has been courted by many states, including Texas, whose governor specifically called for it to head for the Lone Star State.

State Rep. Whit Betts, R-Bristol, said the firm has been shoved away from Connecticut by the unwarranted legislation to restrict access to some firearms.

The last straw, Betts said, was a television interview several weeks ago in which Gov. Dannel Malloy “demonized” gun manufacturers with his “incredibly polarizing and totally untrue” comments about gun-makers.

During that interview, Malloy said the gun industry wants “to sell as many guns to as many people as possible even if they’re deranged, even if they’re mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background, they don’t care. They want to sell guns.” After that, Betts said, nothing could keep PTR from leaving the state.

The legislation, which came in response to December’s Sandy

Hook massacre, expands the ban on certain types of guns considered “assault weapons.” It also bans the sale or purchase of high-capacity magazines, mandates the establishment of a deadly weapon-offender registry, expands access to mental health care for adults and children and boosts school-security measures.

Lawlor said the ban simply prohibits manufacturers from selling guns in Connecticut that can “kill a lot of people quickly.” “There is nothing in the law about shipping or marketing out of state, they just can’t sell to (Connecticut) civilians,” he said.

However, state gun manufacturers said they have been in a holding pattern since the law passed in early April, waiting for state leaders to clarify which firearms and magazines are illegal to sell.

“None of the Connecticut gun dealers know what they can or cannot sell at this point,” Malkowski said. “Imagine a store, regardless of what type it is, and they can’t determine what they can sell. How is that in any sense fair?” In the three months before Malloy signed the bill in early April, Malkowski sold $1 million worth of “assault-style” guns in-state.

Since the bill signing, while waiting for clear guidelines from the state on which guns would be banned, Malkowski has not sold any of the weapons that could be in question — a loss that could potentially reach $1 million.

But he is working on a prototype AR-15-style gun with alterations that he hopes he will be able to sell legally in Connecticut.

“We’re looking at what we can still sell in the state,” Malkowski said.

“My intention is to have a prototype ready next week and bring it to the State Police weapons unit to see if what we produced would comply.”

Even if the gun passes muster with state officials, Malkowski said, he hasn’t determined if his manufacturing operation will remain in the state — he’s expected to meet with Gov. Rick Perry of Texas Friday.

Malkowski’s supply network is in New Britain where he gets everything from plating to magazines.

But he hasn’t ruled out moving out of state even if the prototype weapon is approved for sale in Connecticut.

“At the end of the day we’re trying to keep people working with jobs in Connecticut,” he said.

Scalise, who is a third-generation New Britain business owner, is already working on a spread sheet to compare perks offered to gun manufacturers in 17 other states.

He has thousands of orders for high-capacity magazines that were placed and manufactured before the law went into effect.

Due to the manufacturing process, they were unable to ship the items until after the law passed, putting $60,000 to $90,000 worth of orders in limbo. The figures don’t include sales he has missed since the law took effect.

State Rep. Whit Betts, R-Bristol, said PTR Industries, a maker of semi-automatic rifles, which has announced it will leave the state, has been shoved away by “unwarranted legislation.”

He also doesn’t know if his customers will agree to take legal magazines as replacements.

“I do have a number of magazines that are legal,” Scalise said. “But the greater issue for me is, there is a number of pending orders that were placed on the Internet and I don’t know where those stand. They were all completed. I don’t know if I’ll have to credit their credit cards until June 1.” Staff writer Steve Collins contributed to this story.

Gov. Malloy: School safety is a top priority in Connecticut

HARTFORD — School safety is “the next round” of priorities in response to the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Wednesday.

“Ultimately, safety is a local issue,” he said, “so what we have to do is really get good at working together.”

His comments came Wednesday at a public conference on school security at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. More than 400 people who work in or around schools attended the event, inspired by the massacre that resulted in the deaths of 20 first-graders and six educators.

“We also learned other things about who we are, what we are, and how we can make our children and our families safer. That’s the next round in what we need to do,” Malloy said. “And as much of that as can be done needs to be done by September.”

Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra was also on hand at the conference. She talked about the risk of overreacting to the danger posed by mass school shootings.

“I am concerned, though, that our focus on making our schools safe from those outside through the use of police officers and security guards will communicate to those inside that we are in danger — that the only way to feel safe in a school is to be protected by a person with a gun,” she said.

Llodra said she was “uncomfortable” with the idea of placing armed guards in schools. She said that the police officers stationed in every school in Newtown are necessary now but that she hopes they will not remain indefinitely.

Security expert Michael Dorn delivered the conference’s keynote address. He urged school administrators to collect and use data in crafting school security policies and to broaden their perspective beyond active shooter scenarios.

Dorn is executive director of Safe Havens International Inc., a nonprofit campus safety organization that was hired recently to conduct a security assessment of Danbury schools.

He based his recommendations

on thousands of such assessments and hundreds of interviews with education and security professionals around the world. He suggested that schools make decisions based on trends, surveys and incident data.

“Are you measuring, or are you assuming?” he said.

Dorn’s presentation highlighted dozens of incidents of violence in schools around the world and as far back as the 18th century. He said that schools must “train for all the possibilities, not just the ones that frighten us the most.”

Dorn stressed that because school violence is not new or unique, it can be minimized by data-driven strategies. He called on schools to collect data on bullying, gang activity, drugs

and violence, and to use patternmatching and recognition techniques to determine appropriate security procedures.

Dorn also highlighted the role of culture and climate in ensuring school safety. By focusing only on raw security, he said, “you could take a school and turn it into a prison.”

“Or you could use everything I just showed you and create a welcoming climate, if you maintain dignity, honor and respect,” he said.

Thomas Pentalow, assistant director of security for Hartford schools, attended the conference and said Dorn’s message resonated with him.

“All of these techniques that he’s teaching today are changing our mindset,” he said.

Although this is their last year at the high school, they’ll leave it a better place.

After organizing a group of students together, the boys advocated for the passing of last year’s town referendum for the top-to-bottom renovation of their high school.

“We’ve failed in two previous referendums,” explained Almeida.

Students campaigned all across town, passing out flyers and gathering public support.

“There was a large public meeting with more than 700 people and they spoke very eloquently about why we need a new school, basically giving a student voice to that movement,” he added. “I honestly believe these kids were hugely responsible for the passing of that referendum.”

Involvement in local government is just the beginning for James, who also serves on the First Congressional Youth Cabinet, advising Congressman John Larson on issues concerning youth.

“I believe young people do have a voice, and we can influence a vote,” he says.

They’re not intimidated by their elected leaders, but they will admit to a fear of spiders and disappointing people.

“I like to follow through on my promises,” says David. “It’s not just your pride at stake, but you’re letting someone that put their faith in you down. Trust is a big thing for us.”

As they finish up their senior year at Rocky Hill High School, the Wang twins hope to help organize more fundraising events for Project Graduation, the school’s substance-free, all-night party that

“We’re ready to start the next chapter,” adds David, who is “90 percent sure” that the Stern School of Business at New York University will be his new campus — his own pursuit economics and finance.

Veering in different directions academically and geographically might be strange for the boys, identical twins with just as many lifestyle similarities.

“They’re academically both very, very strong,” said their principal.

“Incredible work ethic, they’ve taken every rigorous class at the high school … are both in our National and International Honors Societies.”

David is known as the quiet leader; James — the more outspoken leader.

“This year we really began to take our own paths,” James explains.

“I think our passions became clearer,” adds David. “Mine’s dancing.”

“Mine’s spoken word poetry,” says James.

It’s true; they’re not just at the top of their class academically and involved athletically (cross country, swimming) but they have creative talents as well.

“Our running coach Mr. Graca once explained to us there are three parts of life: academics, sports and arts. If you can balance those three things you can be a well-rounded person,” says David of their shared philosophy and motivation.

Self-expression is equally as important to them as hitting the books.

So what does “free time” mean to such accomplished young people?

“We’re still goofy kids — normal 18-year-old boys,” James says.

CCSU students get global perspective during UN trip

Students at Central Connecticut State University stepped off the coach bus wide-eyed as they saw the 193 flags flapping in the wind outside the United Nations.

Political Science Professor Ghassan El-Eid brings his students to the United Nations every spring and hopes that they get an understanding of the importance of international education.

“We look at this as a great opportunity for students,” said El-Eid, walking through the visitor’s center.

“This is consistent to our philosophy where we emphasize international education. We live in an increased globalized world and I think the UN is the one organization that resembles that idea.”

According to El-Eid, who plans the annual trip, CCSU reserves a spot six months in advance. The United Nations sponsors a speaker and the university covers transportation.

“I am pretty open-minded,” said Raymond Gauvreau. “This is an opportunity [for students] to meet someone important and learn something about the UN. I absolutely wanted to go to this.”

This year’s speaker, Col. Emeka Onumajuru, is a part of the Darfur Integrated Team, Office of Operations and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Students gathered in a small classroom to hear Onumajuru’s lecture on peacekeeping.

“What’s good about this speaker is that I was very interested in his experience as a commander on the field with peacekeeping,” said El-Eid. “I was interested in his personal experience in Darfur.”

Onumajuru is from Nigeria, having served in the army there.

With his military background, he was drafted to peacekeeping by the United Nations to work in Darfur.

According to the United Nations website, protection of civilians is the primary mandate of the UNAMID (African Union/UN Hybrid operation in Darfur). In addition, it provides security as needed, assists in the politicalprocess and monitors the situation along the borders with Chad and the Central African Republic.

In 2003, a civil war erupted in Darfur between the government of Sudan and its allied malitia and rebel groups. In the first two years, tens of thousands were killed. Even today, fighting continues between the

government and various factions. It is estimated that 1.8 million people have been displaced from their homes.

“So far, the United Nations has committed about $76 billion toward peacekeeping,” said Onumajuru.

“The current budget for peacekeeping for the year 2012-2013 is about $7.2 billion.”

Onumajuru spoke to the students about the fundamentals of his job as a peacekeeper. He gave the essentials on what the job entails and examples of his experiences.

According to Onumajuru, there are three basic principles to peacekeeping: consent of the parties, impartiality and the non-use of force except in self-defense, and the defense of the mandate to protect civilians.

After the lecture, student Bobby Berriault asked Onumajuru what he would do if he had access to unlimited resources or funds.

“There needs to be political organization,” said Onumajuru. “We need more political resources.”

Parrish, who served in Afghanistan a few years ago, asked Onumajuru what a peacekeeper is expected to do in a tension-filled scenario.

“As someone who’s been on the ground in an armed conflict, I know how long it takes to make these decisions,” said Parrish. “I wanted to know how hard it is for peacekeepers on the ground who are confronted with this scenario would handle it.”

Onumajuru said that it would all depend on the quality of their training.

“That is where the quality of training and the ability to take initiative lies,” said Onumajuru. “You are going to make that call based on what you see. Your judgment in the end will determine what you do to find a solution.”

Students from El-Eid’s class said they were very impressed with the visit. “It’s one thing to study these diplomats but it’s another thing to actually get here and see their point of view,” said Kathleen Griffin.

“Anyone can pick up a book, but coming here firsthand helps me get a better understanding.”

Kristy Rencurrel agreed with Griffin and said that as an international business major, she believes the UN and her future should coincide.

“I think it is very important for someone in international business to take this class and understand all of the different nationalities you will be working with,” said Rencurrel.

ferent perspectives and I have no doubt in my mind that today’s lecture expanded their knowledge on the United nations, on peacekeeping and about the challenges that are facing the United Nations.”

Senate passes energy bill; environmentalists angry

A renewable energy bill that has set much of the environmental community against the administration of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and legislative Democrats was passed Wednesday by the state Senate.

If politics makes for strange bedfellows, doubly so for this bill: Owners of energy plants sided with environmentalists, who failed to win over any of their usual allies among the Democratic majority.

The final vote was 26 to 6, with four Republicans joining all 22 Democrats to approve and send the bill to the House of Representatives.

The legislation redefines the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard, which requires electric companies to rely on renewable sources for an increasing percentage of their power, reaching a maximum of 20 percent in 2020.

The administration says the bill creates competitive pressure on wind, solar and other renewable energy producers by giving the state greater flexibility to meet those goals by adding large-scale hydro-electric power to the mix.

Environmentalists say the effect will be a rollback of long-established goals to rely more heavily on cleaner, renewable sources of energy, which are graded as Class I, Class II and Class III. No other state has approved such a rollback.

Malloy, his commissioner of energy and environmental protection, Daniel C. Esty, and the bill’s legislative sponsors say price must be a more important consideration in obtaining power.

“As a state, we value Class I clean and green energy,” said Sen. Robert Duff, D-Norwalk, the

co-chairman of the Energy and Technology Committee. “But we have to make sure we are being sensitive to ratepayers at the same time.” Connecticut typically has the most expensive electricity in the lower 48 states.

A source of conflict is the status the bill gives to large-scale hydro-electric power. It would be considered a Class IA energy source, available to meet renewable standards if there was “a verified shortage” of Class I sources such as wind or solar.

The administration calls it “an insurance policy.”

Environmentalists call it a retreat from renewable energy and a boost to Northeast Utilities, which is trying to build a new transmission line supplying power from HydroQuebec to New England.

Energy producers say the bill gives Esty too much discretion in making long-term commitments for renewable energy.

They and others also have questioned why the bill was written before the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection finished a study of the Renewable Portfolio Standard on which legislation was to be based.

Sandi M. Hennequin, the vice president of the New England Power Generators Association, said the department was flooded with comments about changes to the Renewable Portfolio Standard, but it rushed to produce a final report in time for passage of the bill.

“We’re saying, ‘Hit the pause button,’ “ Hennequin said.

“Generally with how this whole process has worked, I gotta be honest, I’m extraordinarily frustrated with how this whole thing was put together,” said Dan Dolan, the association’s president. He

called it, “Ready, fire, aim.” The socalled triggers that would allow the purchase of hydro-electric power as a new Class IA renewable are ill-defined, Hennequin said.

“There is no guarantee of a competitive process,” she said.

Last week, the Senate postponed a vote on the bill after environmentalists raised questions about the propriety of Esty’s discussing the measure in a wide-ranging conference call with stock analysts and investors.

Esty, who talked about energy issues on a call arranged by UBS Securities, hastened to apologize to legislators for what he called a

matter of clumsy timing.

“I should have been more attentive to the fact that legislation was pending,” said Esty, who could be seen making the rounds of leadership offices at midday.

“In retrospect, that was a miss. I should have been more careful.”

Republican State Chairman Jerry Labriola has requested investigations from the attorney general and chief state’s attorney.

Common Cause and the Connecticut Citizen Action Group are among the entities to file a massive freedom-of-information request, demanding all of Esty’s correspondence and

documents pertaining to the development of the departments report on renewables and the bill passed Wednesday.

But Sen. Ed Meyer, D-Guilford, whose campaign manager was the CCAG’s executive director, Tom Swan, was among those who stood Wednesday to defend the bill.

The Memorial Day Committee is pleased to announce that plans for the annual Memorial Day Parade and ceremony are underway. Chairperson Larry Spellacy announced that this year’s parade will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25.

This year, in recognition of all veterans, the parade’s theme will be “Never Forget Those Who Served.” The parade committee cordially invites all veterans who have served to join us next to the reviewing stand to view the parade as a guest of the committee. Malloy guest of People Magazine at dinner

HARTFORD (AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he attended the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner as a guest of People magazine.

The Democrat told reporters on Monday that he sat at the same table Saturday night with “Mad Men” actress Jessica Pare and “Parks and Recreation” star and comedian Amy Poehler, a fellow graduate of Boston College.

The annual gathering in Washington, D.C., brings together journalists, government officials, politicians, media personalities and celebrities for an evening of light-hearted banter.

Malloy said he attended an after-party hosted by MSNBC, where he’s a frequent guest.

When asked why members of the Connecticut media were not notified of his out-of-state trip over the weekend, Malloy referred the question to his communications director. He added: “I can assure you the lieutenant governor knew.”

Rocky Hill resident named ‘Summa Scholar’ by Archdiocese of Hartford Rocky Hill resident Ryan Murphy is among three outstanding seniors from Northwest Catholic High School, including one from Rocky Hill, have been named “Summa Scholars” by Dr. Dale R. Hoyt, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford, in recognition of superior academic achievement.

To qualify for the award, which was given to 37 seniors from eight of the Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, students needed a grade point average of 4.3 or 98 percent through the first semester of grade 12. The students were honored during a ceremony and reception at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield April 29. Dr. Julia M. McNamara, President of Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, was the keynote speaker.

Each Summa Scholar was invited to name the teacher from a Catholic elementary or secondary school who had been the most influential in the student’s education. These teachers were also honored during the ceremony. Murphy, who will enroll at Georgetown University in the fall, honored Northwest Catholic science teacher and department chair Virginia Murphy.

“We are very proud of these students for their academic achievement as well as all of the gifts and talents that they have developed and share with the greater NWC community,” said Principal Margaret Williamson.

The Summa Scholars received bronze medallions engraved with their names, the crest of the archdiocese, and a prayer: “May you find truth through faith, knowledge, and wisdom.”

TENNIS COURTS AT MILL WOODS PARK LIT: The Wethersfield Parks & Recreation Department announces that the Tennis Courts at Mill Woods Park will be lit in the evening hours between 7 and 9 p.m. from Sunday through Saturday through Sept. 30.

FLAGS OF APPRECIATION: GFWC Newington/Wethersfield Woman’s Club has announced its second annual “Flags of Appreciation” fundraiser to benefit veterans and members of our armed forces. Flags “in memory of” or “in honor of” will be displayed in alphabetical order at Garfield and Mill Streets on the Newington Memorial Day Parade route and at the Broad Street Green near the Reviewing Stand on the Wethersfield Parade route on Saturday, May 25. Club members will be at each location until noon. Flags may be picked up at the end of the parades or arrangements can be made to pick them up at a later date. Each hemmed American flag which measure 17” X 11 ½” will have a keepsake personalized, laminated card attached. Each card will contain the persons name, rank, dates and location of service.

Flags which are available for a $10 donation may be ordered through May 17. Application forms which contain mailing and check information are available at Newington Parks & Rec, the Newington Senior & Disabled Center, as well as, Wethersfield Parks & Rec. Members will be selling the flags at Stop & Shop on Jordan Lane in Wethersfield Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The club which is a member of GFWC/CT and General Federation of Women’s Clubs is a nonprofit volunteer service organization dedicated to serving its communities and beyond. CARFIT: HELPING MATURE DRIVERS FIND THEIR SAFEST FIT: Many older drivers have difficulty in fitting into their own cars well. Whether it is adjusting mirrors in order to see the blind spot, positioning seats to be far enough away from the steering wheel yet with enough room to reach the gas pedal, or getting the seat belt to fit comfortably, there are many adjustments that can be made to find the safest fit. CarFit was developed to meet this need. Trained volunteers will lead drivers through a 12-point check list with their vehicle, recommend personal vehicle adjustments and adaptations, and offer community specific resources and activities that could make their personal vehicles “fit” better or enhance their safety.

An occupational therapist will also be on hand to provide information to older drivers on how to maintain and strengthen driving health. Individual appointments will take approximately 30 minutes. This free program, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, May 4, at the Pitkin Community Center, 30 Greenfield St., is sponsored by the Wethersfield Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, along with the AAA, AARP, AOTA, and the Injury Prevention Center of Hartford Hospital/CT Children’s Medical Center.
