Wethersfield native discusses her novel ‘City of Sorrows’ By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER

Imagine skipping off to Old Wethersfield’s mysterious Ancient Burying Grounds after school to read “The Witch of Blackbird Pond” among the tombstones of witches it was inspired by. That was a typical afternoon in the childhood of Wethersfield native Susan Lostocco Nadathur, who just released her debut novel, “City of Sorrows.” Nadathur will share her story and sign books at the Volume 53, No. 5

Wethersfield Public Library on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Described as “an up-close look into the enigmatic world of Gypsy Spain,” the book is a fictional story of the challenges faced by a marginal population that Nadathur has grown to understand well during trips to Seville, Spain. But it also delves into the emotional struggles of outsiders in general — a theme Nadathur is all too familiar with. Although Wethersfield’s historic village was the perfect setting for a day-dreaming writer to grow up, her childhood was not a happy one. “I was a bookworm, with cokebottle glasses since the fourth See AUTHOR, Page 3

Discovery Academy breaks ground CREC school will have robotics lab, state-of-the-art facilities

By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER

The groundbreaking of a new facility to house the Capitol Region Education Council’s Discovery Academy began Thursday. Construction on the school, which serves Pre-K through fifth grade, was expected to begin early in the spring, but was delayed by a review and approval process with several regulatory agencies. It’s currently housing students in a temporary location on Franklin Avenue in Hartford. Their

move into the state-of-the-art facility, now being built on the former site of Northeast Utilities at 176 Cumberland Avenue in Wethersfield, will enhance student opportunities, according to CREC officials. “For the past two years, our building committee has diligently met with the architects to design a state-of-the-art STEM elementary school,” said Dr. Lynn Toper, Principal of the CREC Discovery Academy. “Our students, families, and staff are so excited to formally start

the construction process. When complete, the building will house a robotics lab, rooftop garden, and outdoor nature areas to support science exploration.” The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math curriculum will be complimented by the site’s natural rolling topography and extensive vegetation. Nature trails, discovery areas, planting beds, fields and play areas will accompany classroom instruction. When completed, the school

will accommodate 480 students in 24 core classrooms. Additional classrooms will be provided for science, literacy, art, and music. Students will also have a new computer lab, library and media center and a multi-purpose gym. Besides serving as the hosttown for a new magnet school, Wethersfield benefits from the project in another way. Wethersfield, LLC, the property’s former owner, issued the town a $2 million payment in-

lieu of taxes when they closed the sale with CREC in August 2012. This will cover annual property taxes for the next 20 years since the property came off the tax rolls when purchased by CREC, a tax-exempt organization. According to Town Manager Jeff Bridges, a Trust has been established for this money, to be used to pay for Capital Improvements. “That money will be used to offset any losses in property

taxes in the budget,” he said. “It’s another building that’s been put back for beneficial use to the community and a positive thing because the school is bringing more people into Wethersfield,” Bridges continued. “We’re looking forward to getting it open.” Construction is expected to be completed by June of 2015 and school will commence that fall. She moved to Spain after graduating from college, and that’s where she met her husband Govind, a first-generation Indian. The couple now lives in Lajas, Puerto Rico, with their daughter. When not reading and writing herself, Nadathur vol-

A registered nurse with a master’s degree in Spanish, she also teaches language and cultural diversity workshops to childbirth and health-care professionals. But it was her time spent in Spain that inspired “ City of Sorrows.” Decades ago a Spaniard refused her friend a cup of coffee at a bar in Seville and asserted, “Gypsies and Moors are not served here.” It was in that moment Nadathur recognized the sting of prejudice and misunderstanding that plagued her

Elementary schools to celebrate International Walk to School Day Oct. 9

Wethersfield Elementary Schools will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Approximately 1,500 Wethersfield elementary school students will be encouraged to walk and roll to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders. The event will begin at 8 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from their homes. Walkers and bicyclists will arrive at school between 8 and 9 a.m.

The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community. The event is being organized by the Wethersfield Schools Parent Council , a town-wide parent group that works to
