NorthPark welcomes WRR’s Picnic in the Park WRR kicks off the 2010-11 Arts Season with the 16th Annual Picnic at NorthPark in CenterPark presented by WRR and the DFW Mercedes-Benz Dealers Sunday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. You and your family probably already have our Picnic marked on your calendar, but this year there’s one VERY important change… this year we’re moving the party over to the lush green gardens of CenterPark, located at NorthPark Center. The picnic features the Dallas Wind Symphony, 5 Second Rule, The Arts District Chorale and the Booker T. Washington High School R&B Ensemble. You’ll need a ticket for this free event. Listen to WRR, call 214-670-8888 or visit wrr101. com to learn where you can find your tickets. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first performance beginning with the talented students from the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts R&B Ensemble starting the concert at 6 p.m. The Dallas Wind
Symphony close the evening with all your patriotic favorites after 9 p.m. Food and beverages will be available from many of NorthPark’s restaurants and the food court. Bring picnic blankets and food, but please no coolers or alcoholic beverages. WRR goodies will be available at WRR’s booth and at many of our sponsor’s booths. With the arts season upon us, WRR thought we should ask some of our friends in the community what was on their calendar for the next year... here’s what Gregory Sullivan Isaacs and Mark Lowry of TheaterJones.com had to say: The 2010-11 classical music season has plenty to offer. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (FWSO) begins with an uncharacteristic Baroque Festival on Aug. 27, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) opens on Sept. 8 with some well-worn Beethoven. Voices of Change presents quirky works for small ensembles on Oct. 10. Dallas Chamber presents the Violin artwork by decora- Music prestigious Chamber tive artist Lewis Bauer Music Society of Lincoln Center on Oct. 16 in a program that contains Brahms’ divine Clarinet Quartet. Chamber Music International scores big Oct. 22-23 with Beethoven’s “Archduke” trio, arguably the best chamber work--ever. Oct. 29-30 sees the FWSO perform Rodrigo’s ever-popular Concerto De Aranjuez for guitar. November and December offer much of the same holiday fare, other than Voices of Change presenting the music of Xi Wang on Dec. 5. January brings the DSO’s world premiere of Ruders’ Organ Concerto for the shamefully ignored Lay Family Organ and organist Mary Preston. The DSO scores again Jan. 27-
30, when pianist Peter Serkin plays Brahms’ transcendental Piano Concerto No. 2. February starts out with another world premiere, DSO’s commission for the percussion ensemble D’Drum, from composer Stewart Copeland. In March, attention returns to the FWSO, with composer-in residence Peter Boyer’s multimedia musical happening Ellis Island: The Dream of America. The inclusion of Barber’s Piano Concerto makes this a must-see. The end of the month has the DSO tackling Mahler’s gigantic Symphony No. 8. The Dallas Opera goes big when it opens Mussorgsky’s epic Boris Godunov on April 1. The FWSO steals the spotlight back, April 15-16, with Tan Dun’s bizarre Water Concerto. Then Chamber Music International presents Taneyev’s gorgeous Piano Quintet --another must-- April 28- photo by Geof Kern 29. May 7 previews the DSO’s Carnegie Hall concert, with a revival of Stucky’s historical cantata August 4, 1964. But the award for the most daring classical music event of the season has to go to the plucky Fort Worth Opera, when it presents a chamber opera by Phillip Glass called Hydrogen Jukebox, based on Allen Ginsburg’s seminal rant/beat poem, Howl.

Celebrating William Schuman’s 100th birthday Aug. 4 Join WRR as we celebrate the life and times of composer and arts administrator William Schuman on Aug. 4. A life that included a series of firsts, Schuman received the first Pulitzer Prize for Music, was a founder of the Juilliard String Quartet and he was the first president of Lincoln Center. Schuman left behind a substantial body of work including eight symphonies. Tune in as we feature some of Schuman’s most beloved works; the Third Symphony, the ballet Night Journey, a collaboration with Martha Graham, New England Triptych and the orchestration of Charles Ives’s Variations on “America.” Aaron Copland, when presenting Schuman with the William Schuman MacDowell Colony Medal in 1971, said . . . In Schuman’s pieces you have the feeling that only an American could have written them. . .. You hear it in his orchestration, which is full of snap and brilliance. You hear it in the kind of American optimism which is at the basis of his music. Be listening throughout the day as we feature key works from William Schuman’s career including a week long special on Exploring Music, weekdays at 7 p.m. For further reading, pick up “American Muse: The Life and Times of William Schuman” by Joseph Polisi which WRR reviewed in the March 2009 edition of Overture. August Programming Highlights
WRR kicks off a long tradition of rebroadcasting highlights from the Cliburn Concerts season this month. Every year, the Van Cliburn Foundation brings some of the world’s finest musicians to the area. This year, the series will run Wednesday at 8 p.m. starting August 4 with the recital of gold medal sensation Nobuyuki Tsujii. Other concerts will include Gabriela Montero, Garrick Ohlsson, Marc-Andre Hamelin, and a collaborative evening with Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Michael Shih and esteemed musical cohorts. From the Top fans, we’re moving the show to a new and better time. Starting August 15, you can hear this showcase of fine young musicians Sundays at 1 p.m. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra begins its season this month with another ambitious project - a festival of music of the baroque. On Friday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m., WRR will be there to bring you the first night of the festival live on the air. The orchestra will play Bach’s Orchestral Suite #3, selections from Handel’s Water Music, and Pachelbel’s Canon to name a few. You can only hear it in person or on WRR Classical 101.1. WRR welcomes two new congregations to our Sunday morning lineup. Starting August 1, the service of Christ Church Plano will be heard at 7:30 a.m. Then on August 15, First United Methodist Church of Richardson will be heard at 7 a.m. every Sunday. Monday, August 30 at 8 p.m., tune in for a special one-hour preview of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s 2010 AT&T Gala. It will be a special night for Beethoven fans and piano enthusiasts. Look out for the 2010 Top 40 Classical Countdown ballot to appear at WRR101.COM soon. We’ll be taking your vote and bringing you the Top 40 favorite classical music selections from September 4-6. Opera lovers will be looking forward to September when we’ll begin a five-week run of complete broadcast operas from the Dallas Opera’s 2009-2010 season, including Moby Dick and Madame Butterfly.
