THE HOLIDAY SHOW
FEATURING THE CONTEMPORARY TEXAS REGIONALISTS FALL 2014 EXHIBITION CATALOGUE BY WILLIAM REAVES FINE ART
CTR HOLIDAY SHOW
To Artful Holidays The holiday season is a special time for us here at William Reaves Fine Art. It is a moment for counting our innumerable blessings, celebrating the spiritual foundations of our lives and embracing the kindness and love of family and friends. It is a joyous time of celebration and good cheer, and we are glad that it is upon us again. Of course, nothing puts us more in the holiday spirit around here, than the opportunity to open up a sparkling new cache of fresh Texas artwork and share the remarkable bounty with friends and patrons. Such an occasion is presented in this year’s Holiday Show, featuring the gallery’s Contemporary Texas Regionalists. In this exhibition, which culminates our fall grand opening series for our new location, we have orchestrated a spectacular offering as a genuine gift of the season. This Holiday Show is a veritable “Christmas stocking” of an exhibition, overflowing with art works that offer grand visual treats and convey tidings of great Texas joy, all consistent with the holiday spirit! With this, we extend a hearty invitation to our many friends and patrons, and encourage all to partake in what is certain to be one season’s most memorable and eye-catching art opportunities. The paintings, of course, are the remarkable products of WRFA’s Contemporary Texas Regionalist (CTR) group, a collection of 15 distinguished Lone Star artists from all parts of the state. Members include Randy Bacon (Albany), Mary Baxter (Marfa), David Caton (Utopia), Margie Crisp (Elgin), Keith Davis (Austin), Charles Ford (Houston), Pat Gabriel (Fort Worth), Billy Hassell (Fort Worth), Lee Jamison (Huntsville), Rob Kendrick (Austin), Laura Lewis (Mason), Bill Montgomery (Elgin), Noe Perez (Corpus Christi), Jeri Salter (Round Rock) and Debbie Stevens (Cypress). Together, they represent one of the state’s most significant assemblages of artistic talent, with their individual and collective works having been broadly cited for their painterly qualities, as well as for their robust Texas narratives. Theirs is a unique collaboration, being the only group of painters of this caliber and focus continuously showing together in our state today. Thus, our gallery takes great pride in bringing their marvelous works to the growing attention of the state’s art community. While most would declare that their individual development as an artist is certainly enhanced through their work together as a cohort of Texas painters, all of the members of this august body were already exceptionally accomplished in their own right. Each brings a well-established individual
brand and notable track record to the table. In the past year alone, CTR members have found their way into significant museum or gallery exhibitions (see Mary Baxter, Billy Hassell, Jeri Salter or Debbie Stevens), published works in important regional books or periodicals (check out Randy Bacon, Margie Crisp, Rob Kendrick or Bill Montgomery), or have been recipients of major corporate commissions or public works within the state (consider David Caton, Lee Jamison, Laura Lewis and Noe Perez). CTR affiliate, Keith Davis, was even the subject of a recent televised studio visit and interview on the popular Texas Country Reporter series. So this is a recognized and notable group of contemporary artists, commanding strong interest and garnering accolades from all sectors of the arts community. Similar to their Texas forebears of the 20s or 30s, storied figures such as Frank Reaugh, Edward Eisenlohr or Alexander Hogue, these artists have chosen a Texas context to convey broader, more universal themes in their work. While producing works of different style, medium and approach, each CTR artist generates a compelling Texas narrative, and each can trace their primary aesthetic inspiration directly to one or more of the great Texas artists of the previous century. In this sense, their compositions extend the grand traditions of Texas painting and provide a modern forum for what constitutes the “Texas scene.” The group is joined in this exhibition by Hunter George and Erik Sprohge, two of the city’s most admired watercolorists, also among the foremost of WRFA’s “house” artists. These gentlemen share their newest output of fine Texas watercolors, adding their own artful interpretations of the continued Lone Star saga and underscoring their expert hand with water-based media. Both artists are mainstays of the local art scene, and their marvelous works serve to further enhance this great exhibition of Texas paintings. Thus it all comes together as the perfect formula for a wonderful Holiday Show–deck the halls with an exhibition of exceptional artists, fill walls to the brim with superb paintings showcasing classic Texas subject matter and invite good friends to share in the spirit of good cheer. It is an exhibition certain to fill eyes with delight, and upon on thoughtful examination, may even prove to be just the ticket for some of the best gift selections of the season and beyond. We’ll hope to see you there. Enjoy and take a close look; we also gift wrap! William Reaves, President
