By setting down his own record of the local scene as he encountered it, Erwin followed in the footsteps of his regionalist predecessors such as Jerry Bywaters, Alexandre Hogue and Everett Spruce. HOMELANDS is a celebration of the idylls of the Texas countryside both past and present, beautifully rendered by three generations of Texas artists.

In 1969, however, Erwin befriended the venerable Reveau Samuel Gideon and Raymond Everett. Erwin was conscious of the rapid development of these rural areas and hastened to record the heart of his North Texas homeland before the urbanization of these small towns. Viewers will delight in Erwin’s visual memories of times and places now cherished.

in El Paso, Thurston was able to take advantage of the nearby mountainous regions, whether looking to Big Bend, Juarez, or neighboring New Mexico. Thurston’s Big Bend Country (n/d) celebrates the majestic rock formations and topography of our Lone Star state. Similar to Thurston and scapes as those “close to home,” particularly the Franklin, Erwin, Perez is interested in depicting his homelands in South Guadalupe and Organ ranges. He described these ranges as Texas as well as his treks further west into the Big Bend region.

The selection presented in this exhibition features a body of new work by Perez, with images ranging from the lush, South Texas plains, to hill country cacti, to grand West Texas vistas replete with purple mountains and vibrant, stunning sunsets. Followers of Perez and his work will recognize his signature cactus subjects and hill country landscapes, including The Fenceline Oak (2011), which captures the wild, uncultivated environment of blossoming prickly pear cacti and natural wildflowers. HOMELANDS offers a strong collection of Texas painters from three generations, and is a treat for the eyes and hearts of all Texans. These works are sure to inspire an even deeper appreciation for the distinctive Lone Star environs of the past and present.
