Cornucopia: The World of Dan Super

On view Fall 2022

Foltz Fine Art is pleased to present an exceptional collection of 90 objects carved out of longhorns, created between 1890 and 1940, by early native Houstonian Dan Super (1873 1953). The objects range from small bookmarks and bolo ties to back scratchers and pin cushions to a wide array of wildlife sculptures and to the pièce de résistance– a childsize carved chair comprised of 51 ornately carved longhorns. Super’s work is highly detailed, naturalistic and transcends the realm of folk art into fine art with his superb level of execution.

Born into two pioneering Houston families, Daniel Super, Jr. was born in Houston in 1873. His father owned stock yards, D. Super and Brothers Co., providing the young Super with ready access to his raw material. At the age of six, Dan Super carved his first drawing into a piece of the horn of a Texas Longhorn. Over the next 56 years, he made utilitarian pieces like pencil cups, pin cushions, and back-scratchers, realistic replicas of animals and birds, and imaginative carvings of elegant nudes.

As Super’s hobby progressed, he started focusing on fewer, but more detail-intensive works, rather than speedily turning them out. While prolific during his lifetime, receiving notoriety with several museum exhibitions, Super never actively sold his works. Instead, he gifted them to individuals, or, often, created as gifts for family members.

The artist’s family collection remains intact in large part to the incredible stewardship taken by Super’s great grandson, Robert Nelson, who sadly passed away before this exhibition reached fruition. It is because of his dutiful care and preservation of these works that Dan Super’s legacy will remain.

DAN SUPER A CORNUCOPIA

The art of Dan Super is a bounty. To experience this lifetime collection of his extraordinary carved-horn creations is a rare gift. We are given the opportunity to be moved by the beauty of his work, the precision of his craft, and the entirety of his creative vision. We are served a glimpse into one man’s lifelong creative pursuit and the power of art to nourish not only the artist, but ourselves.

Born in Houston, Texas in 1873, Dan Super’s life seems quintessentially Texan. His family was in the cattle business, providing the young Dan his early exposure to the interdependent world of man and animals. Indeed, as a boy his first carved creations were instruments called “blow horns,” traditionally carved steer horns that function as rudimentary trumpets for ranch hand communication. During his long life, Super’s own professional endeavors reflected the ever-changing nature of Houston in the first half of the Twentieth Century. He continued in the family cattle business, operated a retail grocery, and worked in the growing oil industry. However, it appears that his appreciation of the connectedness of man and nature was fundamental and found expression through his childhood hobby turned ardent artistic journey.

The horn carvings of Dan Super hold a rarified place in the parallel worlds of craft and art. They are very much in the traditions of men’s handcrafts, such as whittling, scrimshaw and the notched wood carving practice known as

“tramp art,” which were popular at the turn of the last century. Everyday artisans used common or “make do” materials to fashion both utilitarian and decorative objects, often for loved ones or trade. Some exceptional makers, such as Dan Super, transcended the constraints of their modest mediums and the practical purposes of their chosen craft. Through dedication and expansive creativity, these makers took the most mundane materials and found within them infinite possibilities for expression; further, combined with vision and verve, their craft came to inhabit the world of art. Dan Super’s carved horn creations exemplify this experience. His earliest creations were traditional and serviceable. As an adult his creations eclipsed these beginnings and came to involve so much more. The use of horns both directed and challenged his desire to express himself. His carvings made manifest far reaching themes of history, nature, spirituality and personal narrative, along with an ever–evolving exploration of his chosen materials’ limits. Dan Super described himself

2

as having “never had a lesson.” As a self-taught artist, Super’s creations were not constrained by the expectations of the conventional art world, allowing him to explore and develop his art in unexpected and eccentric ways. His work created self-contained worlds that were simultaneously rooted in his familial place of Texas and the culture of the West, and full of personal meaning. Super was never interested in selling his art, preferring to follow his own inspirations, not the marketplace.

This current exhibition of Dan Super’s carvings affords us the rich opportunity to experience his creative output as a whole. The effect is overwhelming as each piece reveals its individual complexities and the marvels of its carving. Dan Super’s understanding of the fundamental connectedness of man and the natural world is central. His love of family and history is another continual thread through his work. A natural highlight of the exhibition is the Longhorn Child’s Chair. With its fifty-one densely carved horns and tooled leather seat, it is a tour de force of Super’s lifetime work and is certainly a showstopper. Delving further into the collection reveals individual carvings that seem to perfectly embody all of Super’s creative and artistic impulses into a unified whole. His Powder Horn Cup with Artist Portrait, ca.1915 is a prime example. Super’s use of this natural indigenous material to fashion a decorative cup is rich in tradition and history dating back centuries. The carvings that envelop the cup include deer, dogs, a fox hunting scene and an entwining snake, all abundantly illustrating aspects of man’s connectedness with nature. The composition forms an elegantly lush and flowing narrative, and central to it all is Dan Super himself, both in finely rendered

portraiture and boldly scripted signature. It is a masterpiece.

Dan Super’s horn creations are bountiful with inspiration, composition, skillandbeauty.Like a true cornucopia or “horn of plenty,” Super’s works reflect the riches of his mastery of material, technique, form, and imagery. Each carving, large or small, is a full serving.

Dan E. Super, Jr. (1873 – 1953)

Dan Super had the eye of a sculptor, envisioning and then creating hundreds of objects from the elongated form of a Texas Longhorn’s tusk. At the age of six, Dan Super carved his first drawing into a piece of the horn of a Texas Longhorn. Over the next 56 years, he made utilitarian pieces like pencil cups, pin cushions, and backscratchers, realistic replicas of animals and birds, and imaginative carvings of elegant nudes. While these carvings resemble the traditional art of scrimshaw, carvings from whale bone, we’ve not been able to identify another carver who used the Texas Longhorn as his material.

“My work is done with an ordinary pocketknife, hacksaw file and rasp,” Super wrote in 1937. He used the horn in every way conceivable; whole, allowing the shape to define the object he was making, flattened to make mosaic or inlay work. He incised and pierced it, and carved in the round. His own hands polished the horn to a sheen.

Daniel Super, Jr. was born in Houston on August 22, 1873. His father owned stock yards, D. Super and Brothers Co., providing the young Super with ready access to his raw material. Throughout his life, he worked in the businesses key to the identity and success of young, booming Houston; cattle, oil, real estate and rail. In 1896 he married Lula, and took over the family business, expanding it to include a grocery. He closed the company in 1912 and got into the oil business and in 1917 he went to work for T&N O Railroad, from which he retired in 1926. He died on June 1, 1953.

Super loved music and played 23 different instruments including a violin he carved. His most avid hobby was the longhorn carving collection, for which he received praise and acclaim. “I believe everyone shoud have a hobby, and I get lots of pleasure out of mine.” When the collection was displayed for the first time in 1926, it was insured for $2,000. Super would not accept money for his sculptures, although he gave many pieces away, including a hunting horn he sent to Teddy Roosevelt. Many of the carvings were made as gifts for his family and bear the names of his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter.
