The Texas Aesthetic V

The Fifth Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Texas Regionalism May 11-July 28, 2012

The State of Art in The Lone Star State:

The Fifth Texas Aesthetic

For the fifth straight year, William Reaves Fine Art welcomes our Houston and Texas clients to the annual Texas Aesthetic exhibition. The show represents the gallery’s yearly engagement with some of the state’s most prominent contemporary artists and has become a hallmark event for Texas art patrons and gallery-goers throughout the state! As the name suggests, this is an unapologetic, Texas-centered event in which the traditions of Texas painting and print-making take center stage. Viewers who gift themselves with the time to encounter this exhibition will no-doubt discover the robust and distinctive Texas aesthetic which is revealed in the content, palette, style and scale of the 50-plus works on view, all of which are sublimely executed by 17 of the foremost artists working in our state today.

Keith Davis, Joe, 2012, oil/masonite, 24x19 inches

As with all WRFA exhibitions, The Texas Aesthetic constitutes a continuation of our on-going celebration of the artistic legacy of our state, with the objective here being that of reflecting upon how these rich traditions continue to play out in Texas art of today. This exhibition accentuates classic style and imagery born in earlier twentieth-century Texas art and continues still today, imbuing fine Texas works of all eras with distinctive timbre and regional identity. To this end, The Texas Aesthetic has evolved into one of the most important legacy shows relating to the historic qualities of great Texas art! It is an exhibition that evokes the allure of both past and present art scenes of the Lone Star State, all rolled nicely into one compelling presentation. William Young, The Space Between, 2012, acrylic/masonite, 36x28 inches

The artists represented are the Texas regionalists of today, and they are proud to wear that moniker. They rejoice in their Texas roots and experiences, and carry a common devotion for conveying the strength and vitality of their home state through Pat Gabriel, Road Trip 1, 2011, oil/canvas, 13x28 inches their wide-ranging artistic output. Each of the 17 is accomplished in his/her own right, all creating individual statements in art which have garnered significant attention and acclaim. While clearly placing their own imprimatur on present-day Texas art, the artists shown here are not afraid to acknowledge the inspiration and influence of pioneering Texas forebears who forged artistic paths before them in the early and midtwentieth century. In this sense, the exhibition affords viewers a “double-dip” into elements of an authentic Texas aesthetic, offering a feast for the eyes in the form of an exceptional collection of works by living Texas masters, while providing imagery or technique harking back to past Texas giants, such as Frank Reaugh, Julian Onderdonk, Dawson Dawson-Watson, Jerry Bywaters, Otis Dozier, Porfirio Salinas and others. With this as backdrop, we invite friends and patrons to join us for the The Texas Aesthetic V. We urge you to mark your calendars now to view this rare assemblage of spectacular works by Texas’ most prominent contemporary artists. We further hasten to add our word of advice to astute Texas collectors everywhere to seriously consider adding these artists and their works to personal collections of Texas art. As with their earlier predecessors in Texas art, one is wise to get them while you still can! Visit soon. Enjoy Texas art. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s Texas Aesthetic.

Randy Bacon, Marfa, 2011, oil/canvas, 13x100 inches
