WSYA WINNERS’ EVENTS PROGRAMME September 18-22, 2010 l New York City

WSYA - Bringing the worlds’ most committed & creative Young People and UN Millennium Review Summit Leaders together in New York City! Dear Friends, Welcome to the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) Winners’ Events 2010 in New York City! This years WSYA has its core focus on the Millennium Review Summit, which will be attended by heads of state and other high level government officials and is held parallel to the WSYA Events in New York. With just five years left to achieve the MDGs, world leaders see the UN Review Summit as an opportunity to re-energise the global MDG effort and agree on a concrete action plan to accelerate progress towards meeting the Goals by their target date of 2015. While government leaders discuss implementation strategies for the MDGs the youth take action, which is reflected in the WSYA 2010 winning projects. This year the WSYA had 632 submissions from 102 countries that were evaluated by the WSYA Jury 2010 in order to find three winners for each of the six categories. These winners will be showcased at the Winners’ Events in New York, which poses a unique opportunity for Youths to network and discuss with UN MDG Review Summit Leaders, ICT and media experts, business leaders, multimedia producers and creatives who will all be giving their recognition to the showcased winning projects. Let’s enhance the use of Internet media to make the world a better place! I invite you to get actively involved in the WSYA events and leverage on this event with regards to the UN MDG Review Summit and the implementation of the MDGs by 2015. Looking forward to your active participation and valuable contributions!

Don Tapscott said that if you can understand how the young generation thinks and what young people want, you will understand where the world is headed. This says all about the importance that young people act as entrepreneurs and use their creative and brilliant minds to produce e-Content along the lines for reaching the UN Millennium Development Goals. It is great that activities such as the World Summit Youth Award are able to attract participation and acknowledge achievement in this respect. It is great what these young people are able to create. H. E. Ivo Ivanovski Minister of Information Society, Macedonia Information is what allowed mankind to advance. Images, writing and language are media well-tried. But what is the truth in new media? This cannot be easily determined on platforms like Youtube. Therefore, all of us who are using the new tool if the Internet have the responsibility to take care of how we use it and keep in mind how we can utilise it for good deeds. The original meaning of the word “Media” is “Centre” or “Focus”. How does this relate to today’s meaning? In my opinion, responsible handling of new media is a focal issue. Thus, you, as WSYA winners, have been successful in a worldwide competition to serve the greater good. Doraja Eberle Member of the Provincial Government Salzburg, Austria The success of accomplishing the MDGs is unequally distributed globally. The world wide financial crisis has had a negative impact on the economic growth of developing countries. Therefore a special, goal oriented effort is required from the international community in order to achieve the goals by 2015. The United Nations MDG Review Summit, a high plenary meeting of the General Assembly taking place in New York City between September 20th and 22nd should point in this direction. I am delighted that so many young people participated in this years’ WSYA successfully. Dr. Michael Spindelegger Minister for European and International Affairs, Austria

THE UN MILLENNIUM REVIEW SUMMIT September 20-22, 2010 High Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly With only five years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend a summit in New York on 20-22 September 2010 to accelerate progress towards the MDGs. Coming amid mixed progress and new crises that threaten the global effort to halve extreme poverty, “the summit will be a crucially important opportunity to redouble our efforts to meet the Goals,” he said, referring to the targets adopted at the UN Millennium Summit of 2000, aimed at slashing poverty, hunger, disease, maternal and child deaths and other ills by a 2015 deadline. http://www.un.org/en/mdg/summit2010/
