Club Captains Report

Meet Dave...

Autumn Is here and the fish have been feeding up nicely for the coming Winter months. The harbour has offered up good numbers of Kingfish, with slide baiting live mackerel, Kahawai and Herrings being the best method. The art of catching and keeping these baits alive has been the ticket to success. Oriental Parade being the most popular spot with neighbouring wharves offering up the majority of live baits. The West Coast has been producing good numbers of Snapper, Trevally, Gurnard and Kingfish. The upcoming club night on May 3rd has Aaron Houghton talking on live baiting and lure fishing. Club Captain - Dave Pye

” I have been in the club for 27 years and enjoy all facets of fishing. I started fishing the Wellington Wharves as a young adolescent and joined the club in my early twenties.”

The June club day (date to be confirmed) is the WSAC Auction, where persons can auction off any items they may have, with a reserve set. Contact Dave Pye 0272996666 or Gary Whitaker 027 2401685 for the gear list you have and for a list number. The Simrad/ITM New Zealand Sports Fishing Nationals held 18 to 25 February. Our club had five teams competing. The results are later in the newsletter. th

th

April the 4th to 8th was the New Zealand Casting & Angling Association Nationals hosted by the Upper Hutt Cossie Club and WSAC. This again was a successful competition for our club in very trying weather conditions. The results are later in the newsletter. Now’s a great Autumn period for that magic fish every angler aspires to catching.

Meet David...

Club President - David Harvey

The fish is a popper caught Barracuda - not to be confused with our local Barracouta/Cook strait Sailfish from my recent trip to the Solomon Islands. One of the many toothy critters I encountered, it was a spectacular surface strike with crazy aerials during the fight. As for me, I’ve been a member of the club for just over 7 years since moving to Wellington. I’ve been a member of the Club Committee for the last 5 or 6 years and am into my second season as President. Prior to that I’d been shore points recorder for a number of seasons. Originally from Auckland I grew up chasing Snapper and had never caught a Spiny Dog or Red Cod till I landed in Wellington, my life is now complete! In terms of fishing I’d say I’m a Jack of all trades and master of none, enjoying all forms of fishing: surfcasting, LBG, boat fishing (straylining, softbaiting, jigging etc.), fly fishing for Trout, coarse fishing and even a little bit of game fishing. I’m an avid tackle collector and find new shiny things irresistible.

President’s Message Welcome to winter (or as good as), not that we had much of a summer. But as has been the pattern over the last few years autumn has produced some of our most consistent and rewarding fishing, when the weather plays ball.

Unfortunately during the recently held NZACA Nationals, despite some quality fishing in the lead-in Wellingtons weather did not play ball. It can only be said that the weather was absolutely horrendous. Despite the southerlies, the rain and the terrible water conditions we still had strong representation from WSAC and our team met with great, but hard won, success continuing our strong tradition of achievement at these events. You’ll have a full rundown of the results elsewhere in this newsletter and I’d like to congratulate all clubbies who took part, persevered and excelled from the shore, the boat and casting. We had some outstanding results this year, something we should all be proud of. Well done team!

By the time you read this our latest club outing will have taken place, a trip to Glenburn station. This is an aspect of the club that we’re trying to build events that allow us to combine, fishing, socialising and some cool locations. I’m sure it will have been a great success and I’d encourage you to get involved. Trips such as this present a great opportunity to fish in some new locations, learn some new tricks and meet new people. And if any of you have any good ideas for future trips just let one of the committee know.

A heads up for you all, with the season drawing to a close it won’t be long now until the social event of our season! The annual club prize giving and social. This is an opportunity for us all to get together to recognise those amongst us who’ve achieved both in terms of our own club competitions, set records and succeeded at a national level. Not to mention it gives us a chance to socialise and maybe even have a few drinks. Further details will be forthcoming soon, we all hope to see you there.

In closing, I’d also like to mark the recent sad passing of club stalwart, life member and Kaumatua - Lionel Renata. A number of clubbies attended Lionel’s memorial service which although very sad was a celebration of a man who had touched so many people’s lives. Club patron Jim O’Brien spoke at the service, to the depth and course of his personal friendship with Lionel, but Jim also spoke on behalf of WSAC to share with Lionel’s friends and family the significance he held both within our club and the lives of so many of our members. Personally my first memory of Lionel was as a new member, attending a weigh-in and not knowing many people. Lionel rolled up to me quietly introducing himself and just started chatting, asking me questions and even throwing me the odd gem. This was something I watched him do many times over the years with new members in particular, who looked a little lost. He was great fisherman and with it such an unassuming man with a kind and generous spirit that immediately put people at ease and welcomed them. RIP Lionel

Recent Club Events Boat Competitions

Boat Comp Number 7—25th & 26th March With the weather a little challenging to say the least, only two anglers ventured out. Southerly winds and heavy rain made for a very wet and miserable competition. But on the positive side, those two anglers that went out both had good catches. Kayak legend Eddie Ski caught five nice snapper and a kingfish. All season Eddie has shown how rewarding and successful kayak fishing can be. The other angler to venture out was our boat points leader, Felix Wenzel, showing his consistency yet again. Felix had a solid catch of snapper, trevally and gurnard, and demonstrated that top surfcasters make great boat fisherman as well. Cheers, Steve

Home and Away (a Trans-Tasman story) It’s 6pm local kiwi Bme and I am facebooking away when Muka Morley comes on-line in chat and says the Trans Tasman is in Mildura and it’s a bagging venue are you boy’s in? With in seconds Jason says yep, Dan says yep but I was na mate there’s no way in hell I’m gona be allowed out to play for that one. A day later when I happened to menBon to her in doors aka the boss what the lads were up to she said wow that’s a good opportunity you should go. A good hard slap in the face nope I’m not dreaming so before she could change her mind I was all over the keyboard Cha Hoo boys I’m in. “Team Round Eye” was born. Much, much research went in from the lads and many a many discussion took place over what we could expect, what kit we needed and the messages started rolling in on kit the boy’s had made. This all paid big dividends as we were well equipped going into the event and stood in good stead. New poles for heavy elasBcs, new 18-20 elasBcs, side pullers, 4-10g floats, oliveCes to match, size 10 and 8 hooks, 10lb hook length and 12lb pole rigs, heavy feeder rods, heavy feeders and some methods we felt we had prepared well when the date rolled round. All too soon aLer an early morning pick up (many thanks Jas and Chrissy) Team Round Eye was at the airport and ready to roll out. A long 7hr drive out of Melbourne in the end and about 50,000,000 acre’s of cut down wheat fields saw 15 very saw boComs exit the van at the Golden River Holliday Park. We had arrived. We quickly met up with Howard and Martyn our Aussie organizing commiCee and got the low down on condiBons, the fact it was the best team the aussies had had in 25 odd years and we were on their home turf. The forecast was bleak to say the least but we were opBmisBc that we could give them a run for their money but none of us would’ve picked the outcome aLer 2 days of intense match fishing.

PracBce day rolled round and we all embarked onto our drawn pracBce pegs to get down to the business of catching fish and catch fish we did. I managed a good lump but Jas was bashing them out on the feeder and having a ball. I figured no point us all fishing feeder so stayed on the pole and conBnued to catch well but not as big a stamp as Jason. I was catching more but smaller fish and would’ve been well behind at the end I am sure of it. Back at the accommodaBon it was Bme to have the meeBng and draw secBons before kick off the next day. Following this we had a good team meeBng where we discussed team tacBcs, what we had learned during pracBce and what we felt we needed to do to be compeBBve. Roll on day one, the fishing wasn’t red hot but we got stuck in, fished dammed hard and put in a solid result we thought. We had won 2 of the 4 secBons, Mrs Smith (Dave Chapman) won A secBon and Aaron Houghton (MS2)

won D secBon. At end of day we were 9 points a driL of the aussies and thought we were up against it but in no way out of it. Roll on Day 2, the fishing was much improved and we made it pay. When the scales rolled out Garry Bourne won D secBon, Aaron was 2nd by 4 kilo and Nathan had 3rd so boom 9 points taken back right there it was a Bed ball game and we were stoked as we drove towards C secBon. Andy had won and Jason was second woo-hoo we were in front by 6. So on to B secBon. Paul senior had won and Garry Dallimore was 3nd our lead extended out to 10 points a very enthusiasBc kiwi van drove on to A secBon thinking we had just achieved what seemed impossible. Enter the Aussie strong-hold, we had been hammered by 10 points so at best we had Bed with the Aussies which meaned it was down to count back to find out. Glenn had smashed out a 91 kilo bag on the 2nd day to win A secBon so weight count back didn’t look to good for us. We had to fish through a lay day and the Aussie NaBonals before we would find out who had come out on top. The Aussie NaBonals was brilliant. The first day was tough but the 2nd day was bagging mode. Day one saw thew kiwis feature with Garry Bourne 2nd in A secBon, Andy deamer 2nd C secBon. Day 2 saw Andy deamer win B secBon. Andy’s team NZ Rive ended up 4th in the team’s event by 1 point, Team round eye ended up 6th 4 points further back and team numpBes 10th a few more points further back from that. Prize giving came round and on with the Trans Tasman Results: Sec on winners from New Zealand were Dave Chapman, Aaron Houghton, Paul Senior and Gary Bourne. Individual Angler Awards was a 3 way Be all on 3 points so on count back it was Aaron Houghton 3rd and Paul Senior 2nd a fantasBc result to have two Kiwi lads in the top 3. Trans Tasman winning naBon…. Hands up who thinks Australia won, Hands up who thinks New Zealand won. I can tell you it’s the first count back result and Australia has weighed 868.17 kilos, New Zealand has weighed 878.060 kilos…..NEW ZEALAND WIN. The hall erupted and jubilant kiwi’s were shaking hands, hi 5ing and fist pumping it was quite the scene and one I’m sure non of us will forget. Everyone shared info, results it was truly a team effort and everyone fished incredibly well. Lastly Many thanks to everyone involved it was everything I could have hoped for and more. I feel very privileged to have been part of the group and to have been part of such a wonderful Trans Tasman sign off for Stuart, a top man and angler this one was for you my friend, enjoy the victory.

OBITUARY LIONEL RICHARD MATTHEW RENATA 1934 – 2017 Our greatly esteemed Life member Lionel Renata passed away peacefully on 3 April in the presence of his whanau. His funeral was aCended by many of his club mates in appreciaBon of both the mana that Lionel held and his outstanding service to his beloved WSAC which he belonged to for close on 50 years. Lionel served WSAC well. He was prominent on commiCee for four years and with wife Tua organised a couple of prize giving events that were quite outstanding. I am quite certain though, that Lionel’s unique giL to our club was his unfailing ability to meet and greet new members, oLen to the point of taking them fishing and showing them places to fish and how to go about catching different species. Lionel also just loved our NZCA NaBonals events and competed for many years from both boat and shore. Just taking part and meeBng new friends and greeBng old ones was Lionel’s main moBvaBon for aCending. But having said that, Lionel also competed well, taking out two very credible second and a third placing in the open boat event, and along with good buddy Steve Reed took out a first team placing. On the home front Lionel was always a compeBtor and aCendee of every club event, not just the ones that appealed. He worked hard when there was fund-raising to be done and his generous sponsorship through way of sinker donaBons was always appreciated. On the club fishing front Lionel was one of our most acBve members and when you look back through the club’s history you realise just how oLen he has flown under the radar. For instance he sBll holds five club records including the unusual shore catch of a ling weighing 8 kilos. On the trophy front Lionel has won the Veterans trophy four Bmes and his name appears on five other trophies where good sized kingfish and snapper are prominent. Lionel was the inaugural winner of our club’s boat compeBBon in 1986 and repeated the feat in 1989.

Lionel just loved the club’s annual snapper trip to the Pelorous Sound. And what good value he was. Always doing more than his share of the workload and certainly always first up to get things cracking at the 5 am starts. That in itself was quite ironic for while Lionel made sure no one slept in, he also made sure that anyone sleeping within a bull’s roar of him would get no sleep. But you couldn’t get mad at the bloke for Lionel had the most gentle of disposiBons and always sought the good in a person, no maCer how small that goodness might be. In the year 2,000 at the club’s AGM Lionel was deservedly awarded life membership. I know just how much this meant to him, and never more so than the photo he proudly displayed on the door of his room at the rest home where he had resided for the last two years. It shows the then WSAC President Chris Fouhy presenBng Lionel with his Life Membership badge. Lionel was the best of mates that I could have had as a WSAC fishing partner. The fishing adventures we shared both in WSAC compeBBons and NaBonals events will always be strong in my memories. As will be the total respect we shared for one another. To Lionel’s family and friends, the club extends its deepest sympathies. Jim O’Brien WSAC Patron

Boat project update As you can see from the image there has been some progress on my project boat. It now rests upside down on the trailer and I’ve been hard at work on the hull. Patches, soft spots, sanding, sanding and more sanding! Recently started the rebuild with a new layer of glassfiber cloth and a good few coats of epoxy to reseal. This process has taken more epoxy than I though and I’ve learnt about how to try to avoid bubbles under the cloth!

Newsletter Editor - Matt Balkham

From the Editor So the weather is telling us that winter will soon be here and this week we’ve had the first cooler southerly for a while. Hopefully still time for a few nice fish to be caught at the back end of the season and all to play for in the various club competitions. Still a few social events in the calendar and the end of year social not far away too. A massive effort from clubbies is both the NZSFC and NZACA nationals with some great club results to show for it. My first nationals experience was challenging for sure but some great memories made and even managed to scrape a few fish in the toughest of conditions. One thing for sure I’ll be back next year and raring to go!

Next on the list is the new paint job which hopefully I can get sorted before the weather turns (not a job for wet weather). My thoughts

There feels like lots of news packed into this newsletter which has taken a while to pull together. Apologies is been a while since the last one but hopefully worth the wait! Thank you for all the contributions received it’s great to have some extra articles and photos and it’s nice to have to be selective about some of the content.

and fuel tanks . One

So I’ll end the penultimate newsletter of the year with the same request as usual! Please do keep the stories and photos coming in via email or the Facebook page. I’d love more clubbies to get involved with contributions and welcome suggestions for improvements and features.

step at a time!

Tight lines

Hopefully have a few
