This fall, students at Wallace State will find many exciting new developments on campus–from the opening of the new Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts to a fully renovated Bevill Center housing many of our health science programs. Gateway to Wallace State, Structured Learning Assistance Classes, Learning Communities, Transitional Learning, Upward Bound, and Tech-Prep are among our newest initiatives. Several new programs have also recently been introduced including Therapeutic Massage, Gerontology, Culinary Arts and Electroneurodiagnostic Technology. The Automotive Complex, Heating and Air Conditioning program, and the Electronics and Drafting building have all received recent renovations to provide state-of-the-art environments for learning. When you enroll at Wallace State, you have limitless opportunities for education and personal growth, from earning a degree on campus to transferring to a university. Whatever your interest, we will prepare you for the careers of today, and tomorrow. Students are the reason we exist, and we place student learning and achievement at the forefront of ouractivities and initiatives. We are a leader in the state in serving high school students through dual enrollment, early collegeenrollment, and tech prep programs as well as our on-campus Fast Track Academy. Our licensure and job placement rates rank at or above state and national averages, and students score above the national average on the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Performance. Wallace State students who continue their education at the university level do exceedingly well, performing at or above the levels of students who began there. The quality of our academic success has led to a number of universities offering special articulation agreements and bachelor’s degree programs on campus. At Wallace State you have opportunities to explore your interests, find your talents, and chart a path for your future in a supportive environment where faculty, staff and administration challenge you while giving you the tools you need to succeed. If you are ready to make your life extraordinary, then we’re here to help you. Learning Communities and Structured Learning Assistance Programs can enhance your learning, but you must register EARLY! Classes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Learning Communities are courses linked by a theme and taken by the same group of students, thereby allowing a ready-made community of study groups. These classes are designed to provide students with a more integrated and meaningful learning experience. In Learning Communities, WSCC faculty work together to promote an intellectual environment and greater opportunity for students to bond by overlapping readings, assignments, and discussions. Although designed primarily for the first-year student, the pairings are open to all students on a first-come basis with limited enrollment; advisors can assist students in selecting the Learning Community which best meets their academic needs. Students must be concurrently enrolled in both classes linked together and cannot withdraw from one course without dropping both linked courses. Structured Learning Assistance classes or SLAs are classes that provide academic support to assist all WSCC students in difficult courses. The program features weekly required study and practice workshops where students receive free additional help in order to master course content and develop learning strategies for the course. These are offered on a first-come basis, and study sessions are required in addition to regular class meetings if a student’s average drops below a 70.
