NEW THIS YEAR! SEE PAGES 12-13 H TELL US WHAT LECTURES YOU PLAN TO ATTEND

We heard from our attendees that room overflow for popular sessions is an improvement they want us to tackle. Our solution? Making sure we know which sessions will be most popular before they happen. This year, you will be asked to indicate which lectures you are interested in attending when you register. Your selection denotes interest, but you’re free to attend any session onsite. This way, we’ll be able to better place the most popular sessions in the largest rooms. See pages 12-13 for instructions to help you register your office. 2018 PNDC Program · Register online today - wsda.org/pndc · 3

10 · 2018 PNDC Program · Register online today - wsda.org/pndc

The post-graduate residents in Advanced Education in General Dentistry, a 12-month program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), will present table clinics outside the Exhibit Hall on Thursday, June 21 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Simplified Approach for Root Coverage Using Semilunar Technique CPT Quoc Dang The simplified semilunar technique is a periodontal approach for root coverage. The technique allows 2-3mm advancement of keratinized tissue to treat Class I and Class II recession defects on maxillary teeth. This conservative approach does not require donor site and sutures are often not indicated. The table clinic will address the importance of proper case selection, semilunar incisional technique, and summarized of case results. Tooth Prognosis following Indirect Pulp Cap CPT Sarah Frerichs Indirect pulp capping is performed in vital teeth with deep carious lesions. It consists of leaving a thin layer of carious or soft dentin, that if excavated would expose the pulp, and placing a pulpal medicament over the pulp in order to try keep the vitality of the tooth and avoid root canal treatment. Indirect pulp capping may be a way to imminently avoid a root canal and extend the life of a vital tooth. Calcium hydroxide has long been the gold standard in pulp capping materials, but newer bio-ceramic materials are emerging constantly. In this table clinic I will outline a few of the newer bio-ceramic materials and suggest which material may be the best choice in a scenario that requires an indirect pulp cap.

Prevention and Management of Peri-implantits CPT Su Ping Mai

Polychromatic Monolithic Zirconia Restoration CPT Ryan Park

Prevention and management of peri-implantitis is critical as implants become a more common restorative option. Periimplantitis is an infectious disease that causes soft tissue inflammation and bone loss around an implant. The implant positioning, restoration design, soft tissue architecture, and patient’s oral hygiene can all contribute to the disease process of peri-implantitis. This table clinic will review the diagnosis of peri-implantitis and discuss prevention approaches and surgical treatment options for peri-implantitis.

Immediate implant provisional restorations play an important role with soft tissue adaptation and aesthetic smile. CADCAM presents a unique opportunity to fabricate immediate implant provisional restorations and provides faster, easier, stronger and more esthetic results compared to traditional provisional. In this table clinic, literature reviews and step-by-step descriptions of provisional fabrication process will be provided.

Temporary Space Management of missing maxillary lateral incisors by mini-implant retained pontic CPT Jeffrey Marrs Treatment options for patients with congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors include canine substitution, singletooth implants, and tooth-supported restorations. Adolescent patients whose lateral incisor spaces are maintained open for future implant placement may experience significant decreases in alveolar ridge width and height compared to adjacent teeth. This table clinic will discuss the techniques of using mini-implant retained pontics for temporary space maintenance and vertical development of the alveolar ridge for future implant placement.

The Endocrown: Redefining Restorability CPT Thomas Hanna

Tooth Movement Techniques for Intrusion of Incisors CPT Andres Morantes-Villalobos

Modern adhesive dentistry creates new treatment options to restore compromised teeth. Post, core, and crown has been the gold standard treatment option for decades in compromised teeth. However, the Endocrown can be an effective and predictable treatment option as the final restoration for these cases. This table clinic will discuss case selection, techniques, and what the future may hold for the utilization of this restoration.

Pediatric and adult patients alike suffer from anterior malocclusions and consequently may suffer from compromised esthetics. Therefore, intruding anterior teeth is important for orthodontic patients of all ages in order to correct malocclusions and esthetics. This table clinic will address the techniques, risks, and benefits of intruding anterior teeth. Various techniques are used including mini-screws, utility arches, bone anchorages, and Herbst appliances. Intrusion of teeth does not come without risks, however, including labial movement, gingival recession, and relapse.

Sleepless South of Seattle: The use of mandibular advancement appliances within the Army Health System for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients CPT Whitney Simons This table clinic will discuss the steps of using a digital workflow for the oral treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients. By utilizing the Sirona CEREC capture station, CEREC Ortho software, and computer aided milling of the micro-O2 appliance by Prosomnus, providers will be able to deliver mandibular advancement appliances entirely through a digital workflow. Such advancements are allowing the Army to recapture cases of OSA treatment for soldiers historically referred to the private sector. The Army will be able to more effectively and efficiently provide this treatment to the soldiers in an effort to increase each soldier’s quality of sleep, overall wellbeing, and wartime readiness.

DENTAL ASSISTING Increasing Case Acceptance From Whitening to the Esthetic Dental Procedures Thursday, June 21 from 8 - 11 a.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits As clinical procedures in aesthetic dentistry continue to expand and improve, the dental assistant’s role continues to evolve as well. As we connect with patients and understand their desires, it allows them to become more open and honest with their expectations. Increasing case acceptance is easy when we know what to ask and say. This session takes the dental team through proper records gathering, treatment planning, and case acceptance, and how to include whitening and esthetic dental treatment. Learning Objectives: • How to properly schedule the new patient and orchestrate the appointment to gather esthetic, occlusal, biologic, and clinical information • Ask proper questions to connect with the wants and needs of the dental patient • Understand dental procedures and how to present their treatment plan and sequence the steps so as to compromise the time, not the treatment. Shannon Pace Brinker, CDA, CDD Ms. Pace Brinker is a national and international speaker and published author, is the first auxiliary to sit on the AACD Board of Directors. She received the Rising Star Award, and was named one of Dentistry Today’s Top 100 Clinicians in Dentistry.

HYGIENE It’s Time to Talk about Sex in Dentistry… HPV & Its Link to Oral Cancer, Part 1 Thursday, June 21 from 8 - 11 a.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits The new millennium has brought about great advances in technology and innovation, and one of those advancements is the discovery of HPV’s link to head and neck cancer. Unlike other cancers of the mouth, HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers are more likely to occur among younger patients, white men, those without the traditional risk factors of tobacco and alcohol, and those with certain sexual histories. As public awareness continues to grow, so will the knowledge base of the dental health care providers who treat them. This session has a unique approach to discussing HPV from both a dental and medical perspective. It was written and published as a peer-reviewed continuing education course by an RN and an RDH through Penn Well, Inc. HPV disease trends, statistics, morphology, and transmission will be discussed in Part 1. Learning Objectives: • Present HPV morphology, typing, and the different systemic infections HPV types can cause in the human body • Review statistics and transmission of HPV and understand the latest research trends associated with it • Review oral cancer screening techniques and the importance of extra and intraoral screening.

ENDODONTICS Predictability Through Uniformity in Endodontics Friday, June 22 from 1 - 4 p.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits Root canal treatment can be a very rewarding part of any dental practice when the treatment process goes as planned. But when control over the treatment is lost, this procedure can be fraught with challenges and frustration for both the practitioner and the patient. This session will take the practitioner on an endodontic journey beginning with diagnosis through the creation of a reproducible guide path and final shape, providing tips and techniques to establish a systematic and methodical approach to basic root canal treatment. Learning Objectives: • Understand current diagnostic imaging and diagnostic techniques used in endodontics • Understand proper aseptic protocols and dental dam application • Establish a reproducible guide path preparation and final shape. INSURANCE Policing Illegal and Unethical Practices by Insurance Companies Friday, June 22 from 1 - 4 p.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits The purpose of this class is to provide effective tips on how to prevent insurance carriers from forcing you to lose money on treatment you provide patients. Too often insurance carriers deny benefits to patients when those benefits are necessary to optimize the patient’s oral health. In many situations, doctors are forced to fully write off treatment primarily because the insurance consultant disagrees with the doctor’s diagnosis. During this lecture, we will provide useful tips on how to challenge an insurance carrier when it denies coverage on treatment that is both necessary and requested by the patient. Our objective is to give offices an easy outline to follow to engage in advocacy on Audience Key:

The Hygiene Appointment: 60 Minutes To Do How Many Procedures? Saturday, June 23 from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits The dental hygiene appointment time is stuck at one hour, while the number of procedures expected to be completed grows! Between infection control protocols, medical history/drug interaction evaluations, risk-assessment protocols, aging population issues, and so much more, it is amazing that any hygienist can develop an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan, and provide quality dental hygiene/periodontal therapy, which includes necessary radiographs, periodontal chartings, patient education, and more during those 60 minutes. And when is there time to document everything in the patient record? Then there is the “standard of care” for all of these procedures. Just what does that mean? What are the legal responsibilities of hygienists for the care they provide? What about the employer’s responsibilities? So many questions! Interactive discussions will help provide answers to these questions. Learning Objectives: • Discuss risk assessment protocols, which can be used to determine the extent of your patients’ periodontal condition as it relates to their general health, including how to determine AAP Disease Classification and Case Typing of Periodontal Conditions (these are two separate issues) • Discuss the process of dental hygiene diagnosis and treatment planning (according to the current standard of care), and the related procedure code selection, including documentation requirements • Provide discussion topics to take back to your individual practice in order to facilitate an all-office meeting addressing these topics. Kathy S. Forbes, RDH, BS Ms. Forbes has been a dental hygienist, educator, speaker, author, consultant, and seminar and study club leader for more than 35 years.

Treating, Reporting, and Managing Periodontal Diseases: A Dental Hygienist’s Perspective

BLS BLS for Healthcare Providers Workshop

Saturday, June 23 from 1 - 4 p.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits Treatment planning and management of dental hygiene/periodontal procedures can be as complicated as knowing how to report those procedures to insurance carriers in order to receive reimbursement. Billing appropriately and receiving the benefits your patients deserve can be frustrating to the clinical staff, who must determine and report appropriate treatment, as well as the business staff, who must deal with third-party payer contract limitations. It is up to the hygienist to submit the appropriate documentation and CDT procedure codes that most clearly describe the treatment provided to the patient. She or he must also be able to explain to patients exactly what dental insurance is and is not, and what the contract limitations are, and then emphasize that she or he “will not withhold necessary treatment just because your insurance may not provide benefits.”

Saturday, June 23 from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. CE Credits: 3 Credits · $95 The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers workshop covers core material, such as adult CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation (AED). DQAC may randomly audit up to 25 percent of practitioners for compliance after the credential is renewed, as allowed by chapter 246-12 WAC, Part 7. (WAC 246-817-440)

CE REQUIREMENTS/HYGIENISTS Dental hygienists are required to complete 15 clock hours of continuing education annually, including maintaining a current basic life support (BLS) card for healthcare providers. (WAC 246-815-140)

MIN. SEDATION REQUIREMENTS To administer minimal sedation, a dentist must complete a course in either dental school or postgraduate instruction. The length of course required depends upon the method of minimal sedation (WAC 246-817-740, WAC 246-817-745). To administer nitrous oxide or minimal sedation with a single oral agent, a dentist must have completed a course (in either dental school or postgraduate instruction) containing a minimum of 14 hours. In order to administer any oral agent in combination with a different agent or multiple agents other than nitrous oxide, a dentist must have completed a course (in either dental school or postgraduate instruction) containing a minimum of 21 hours. In addition to the 14- or 21-hour training requirement stated above, a dentist must participate in seven hours of continuing education every five years. The continuing education must include instruction in one or more of the following areas: sedation; physiology; pharmacology; inhalation analgesia; patient evaluation; patient monitoring; or medical emergencies. (WAC 246-817-740, WAC 246-817-745)

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS Dental staff providing direct patient care in an in-office or outpatient setting must hold a current and valid healthcare provider basic life support (BLS) certification. Dental staff providing direct patient care include: licensed dentists; licensed dental hygienists; licensed EFDAs; certified dental anesthesia assistants; and registered dental assistants. Newly hired office staff providing direct patient care are required to obtain the required certification within 45 days from the date hired. BLS certification is good for two years.
