WSK Euro Series, Rd.3 2021 | Sarno

Page 1

EDITORIAL

by Luca De Donno

The WSK Euro Series is still wide open: six different winners, in the four international classes, in the first two rounds of the 2021 season and four titles that still need to be assigned before the last round in Sarno. This is not only a sign of the unpredictability caused by incremental points scoring, but, above all, it’s a sign of the high level of the drivers out on the track in our series. Despite the term “Euro”, which indicates the continental level of the championship, out on the track there are young talents from Europe, but also from the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Practically every corner of the globe is represented and, for us at WSK Promotion, internationality and diversity are a great source of pride, so much so that the WSK Euro Series is a training ground that has not just produced stars who have made their way into Formula 1, but also - in the name of diversity - into many other international car competitions. Now, let’s get back to the present: the International Circuit Napoli, with its new layout designed at the beginning of the year, will undoubtedly offer no holds barred battles, with mutual respect among rivals and sportsmanship. However, the WSK “offers” certainly don’t come to an end this weekend because, after the summer break, the WSK Open Cup over two races in September and the WSK Final Cup in November will, as has been the tradition for some years now, bring our competitive calendar to a close with more races full of twists. May the best triumph.

Riccardo Longhi Birel Art / TM Racing

Four Birel Art Racing drivers occupied the first four positions in the second round of the KZ2 class of the WSK Euro Series. Marijn Kremers (Birel Art/TM Racing) was unbeatable over the weekend at Adria: first in qualifying, with three wins and two fastest laps in the three qualifying heats and victory together with the fastest lap in the prefinal. The Dutch driver was also clearly superior to the competition in the final, where he grabbed his second consecutive victory in the championship and, icing on the cake, also posted the fastest lap time. Riccardo Longhi (Birel Art/TM Racing) climbed one place from his starting position and finished second, ahead of his teammate Alessio Piccini (Birel Art/TM Racing), who finished third. Giuseppe Palomba (Birel Art/ TM Racing) completed the dominance of the Birel Art chassis in fourth place, thanks to overtaking Paolo Ippolito (CRG/TM Racing), who crossed the finish line in fifth, on the first lap. Kremers is firmly in command ahead of Longhi and Piccini in the championship standings.

Francesco Celenta Parolin / TM Racing

KZ2 - RANKING P.

Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame) did the double in the WSK Euro Series. The British-licenced driver started the weekend at Adria with a third place in qualifying, then managed three wins in the three qualifying heats and also won the prefinal. Lindblad got off to a smooth start from pole position in the final and held the lead all the way to the chequered flag, despite pressure from Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (RK/TM Racing) throughout the 20 laps of the race. The Polish driver was unable to find the spark to try and overtake Lindblad and finished in second place, 0.223 seconds behind the KR Motorsport standard-bearer, who is also firmly in the lead in the championship standings. Martinius Stenshorne (Birel Art/TM Racing) finished in third place, while Ugo Ugochukwu (KR/Iame) came fourth and keeps second place in the championship, followed by Kucharczyk in third.

238

Rafael Modonese Praga / Iame

Mark Kastelic Exprit / TM Racing

Freddie Slater (Kosmic/Vortex) emerged ahead of everyone in the decisive moment at Adria, during the second round of the WSK Euro Series for the OKJ class. The British driver didn’t get off to a good start from second place on the starting grid, unlike pole-man Harley Keeble (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Enea Frey (Kosmic/Vortex), who occupied the first two positions. Slater dropped to fourth, but quickly climbed into second in just one lap and overtook Keeble to take the lead in the race. Subsequently, Keeble was also overtaken by Frey, Mark Kastelic (Exprit/TM Racing) and Kirill Kutskov (KR/Iame). Kastelic won his duel with Frey for second place, but failed to catch Slater in the remaining laps: the Ricky Flynn Motorsport driver crossed the finish line first. Frey grabbed third place, with Kutskov fourth and Keeble fifth: nevertheless, the Tony Kart Racing Team driver climbed to first place in the championship standings, ahead of Slater, second, and Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin/TM Racing), third, despite retiring in the final at Adria.

377

Anatoly Khavalkin Parolin / TM Racing

AN ITALIAN SUMMER After the rain in the first round in Lonato two months ago, the WSK Euro Series enthusiastically welcomed the typical Italian summer weather, characterised by warm temperatures and sunny days. As always, the Adria Karting Raceway was the setting for some great entertainment out on the track provided by the 219 drivers registered in the four classes.

Vladimir Ivannikov EKS / TM Racing

A, close hard-fought duel for victory in the MINI class at Adria, with the top five drivers all within the space of a single second over the finish line in the final. Emanuele Olivieri (IPK/TM Racing) was the one to emerge in front of his rivals: the Italian driver made no mistakes from the pole position earned in the prefinal and led the race for the first 9 laps. On lap 10, the final one, Olivieri was overtaken by Davide Bottaro (Parolin/TM Racing), but was quick to retake first place, while Christian Costoya (Parolin/TM Racing) took advantage of the opportunity to hoist himself up to second. Olivieri defended his position from Costoya’s attacks well and celebrated his first win of the season in the WSK Euro Series and first place in the championship standings. Costoya finished second, with Vladimir Ivannikov (EKS/TM Racing) claiming the lowest step of the podium. Jindrich Pesl (Parolin/Iame), winner of the first round in Lonato, finished the race in fourth place, ahead of Alfie Slater (Energy/TM Racing) in fifth and Bottaro, who dropped to sixth place. 512

FOCUS

NYCK DE VRIES

ALEX ALBON

Two podium finishes for Nyck de Vries in his two years competing in the WSK Euro Series: 2nd place in 2010 in the SKF class, 1st the following year in the same class (called KF1). In 2012, the Dutch driver made his debut in the singleseaters series, winning the Formula 2 title in 2019 and, thanks to that result, Mercedes chose him for the German team’s debut season in Formula E and as a back-up driver in Formula 1. After a championship spent as an apprentice, de Vries had a very good start to the 2020-21 season: two wins and a pole position in seven races, which have earnt him the provisional first place (at the time of going to press) in the overall standings.

A double finish in second place by Alex Albon in the WSK Euro Series in 2010 and 2011: first in KF3 (behind Max Verstappen) and then in KF1 (behind Nyck de Vries). 2012 marked the Anglo-Thai driver’s debut in a single-seater, while 2019 was his debut year in Formula 1 driving for Toro Rosso and a promotion, in the same year, to Red Bull. For 2021, Albon is the third Red Bull driver and will compete in the DTM in the Red Bull branded AF Corse Ferrari.

The WSK Euro Series school not only trains drivers for Formula 1, but also many other professionals who make their mark in international motorsport. Below are some of those who took their first motorsport steps in WSK and are now showcasing their talent around the world.

NICKLAS NIELSEN

Alex Palou spent a long time in the WSK Euro Series, a total of three years: in 2011 he found his feet in the KF3 class and finished 14th, while in 2012 he clearly improved his performances and won the title. In 2013, he moved to KF and finished 12th, then the following year he made his debut in the minor formulas. With various experiences behind him (also in Japan), the Spaniard made his debut in the IndyCar Series in 2020 and managed a podium finish and a fastest lap: results that helped him become a works driver for Chip Ganassi Racing, one of the most titled teams in the American championship, for which he managed to get a win in the first round of the 2021 season.

One of the few drivers to have participated in every edition of the WSK Euro Series from 2010 to 2013. Nicklas Nielsen distinguished himself in the championship by improving from season to season: 16th in KF3 in 2010, 6th in the same class the following year, 11th in 2012 in his first year in KF2 and 2nd in KF in 2013. The Danish driver made his debut in a single-seater in 2016, but in 2018 he veered towards the Ferrari Challenge and was chosen by Maranello as a works driver for GT competitions. Nielsen won the LMGTE title in the European Le Mans Series in 2019 and at the end of 2020 the LMGTE Am title in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

@nicklasnielsen
