The new WSK Promotion season has started on the right foot. Over 320 drivers animated the Champions Cup, in its tenth edition this year, more than ever. South Garda Karting in Lonato was, as always, the perfect setting for drivers, teams and enthusiasts who, judging by the entry list, are increasingly high in numbers! In fact, in addition to the traditional international KZ2, OK and OKJ classes, the two IAME mono-brand classes, the X30 Senior and the X30 Junior, also got underway on this exciting race weekend, immediately registering a substantial number of entries and providing a spectacular show out on the track. However, the first stage of the 2023 season also saw another novelty: the introduction of the MINI Gr.3 U10, alongside the existing MINI Gr.3, allowed the many small competitors to show off their talent in a context tailor-made for them and on an international scale. The first champions of 2023 emerged from the finals, but they can’t all rest yet, because it’s already time to face the first round of the Super Master Series, which will see the MINI and OKJ, OK and KZ2 classes back out on the track. The date set for the X30 classes, on the other hand, is the first round of the Open Series on March 12th. However, now all eyes are back on the track, off we go, again!

È iniziata nel migliore dei modi la nuova stagione agonistica firmata WSK Promotion. Oltre 320 piloti hanno animato più che mai la Champions Cup, arrivata quest’anno alla decima edizione. Il South Garda Karting di Lonato è stato, come sempre, il teatro perfetto per piloti, team e appassionati che, a giudicare dall’elenco iscritti, sono sempre di più! Infatti, oltre alle tradizionali categorie internazionali KZ2, OK, OKJ, hanno preso il via in questo appassionante weekend di gare anche le due classi monomarca IAME, la X30 Senior e la X30 Junior, che hanno subito fatto registrare un interessante numero di iscritti e un appassionante spettacolo in pista. Ma la prima tappa della stagione 2023 ha visto anche un’altra novità assoluta: l’introduzione della MINI Gr.3 U10, al fianco della confermata MINI Gr.3, ha permesso ai tanti piccoli concorrenti di mettersi in mostra in un contesto per loro specifico e di valore internazionale. Dalle finali sono emersi i primi campioni del 2023, ma per tutti loro non è ancora arrivato il momento di riposarsi perché è già ora di affrontare il primo round della Super Master Series, che vedrà di nuovo in pista le classi MINI e le OKJ, OK e KZ2. L’appuntamento per le categorie X30, invece, è per il primo round della Open Series, il prossimo 12 marzo. Ma adesso occhi sulla pista, si riparte!

2023 WSK CHAMPIONS CUP: THE WINNERS

BERTUCA CRISTIAN [ Birel Art | TM Racing ]

For the first time ever, Cristian Bertuca (Birel Art/TM Racing) etches his name in the WSK Promotion Hall of Fame. The Italian driver began his adventure in MINI, taking to the track in the Castelletto di Branduzzo round of the 2016 Super Master Series, and in 2019 he moved to OKJ, immediately registering a second-place finish at the Champions Cup in Adria. There’s another runner-up medal in 2020, again at the Champions Cup, the year in which, at the end of the season, he made his debut in OK at the Lonato round of the WSK Euro Series. In 2021, he managed to get onto the podium in the second round of the Open Cup in Adria and finished fourth in the championship.

Per la prima volta in assoluto, Cristian Bertuca (Birel Art/TM Racing) scrive il proprio nome nella Hall of Fame di WSK Promotion. Il pilota italiano inizia la propria avventura nella MINI, scendendo in pista nella tappa di Castelletto di Branduzzo della Super Master Series 2016, e nel 2019 approda in OKJ marcando subito un secondo posto nella Champions Cup di Adria. Un’altra medaglia d’argento arriva nel 2020, sempre alla Champions Cup, anno in cui, sul finire della stagione, esordisce in OK in occasione del round di Lonato della WSK Euro Series. WALTHER DAVID [ Tony Kart | Vortex ]

David Walther (Tony Kart/Vortex) takes his first title in a WSK Promotion championship. His debut in OKJ was in 2020, at the Champions Cup in Adria. The Dane steadily improved over the course of the season and ended the year with fifth place in the Final Cup. In 2021, he moved to the OK class and came close to the podium in the fourth round of the Super Master Series in Sarno. Lastly, he finished sixth in the final of the Open Cup in Lonato.

David Walther (Tony Kart/Vortex) centra il suo primo titolo in un campionato WSK Promotion. L’esordio assoluto avviene nel 2020, in OKJ, in occasione della Champions Cup di Adria. Il danese cresce sempre più nel corso della stagione e chiude l’anno con un quinto posto nella Final Cup. Nel 2021 passa alla classe OK e sfiora il podio nel quarto appuntamento della Super Master Series, a Sarno. Infine, all’Open Cup di Lonato, conclude la finale in sesta posizione.

WHERRELL LEWIS [ Exprit | TM Racing ]

Like the champions in the KZ2 and OK classes, this was also the first triumph for Lewis Wherrell (Exprit/ TM Racing) in an event by WSK Promotion. The British driver made his debut at the 2021 Champions Cup in the MINI class and even managed a podium finish for the first time in the third round of the Super Master Series in Sarno. In 2022, he tackled the OKJ class for the first time and recorded sixth place in the first round of the Euro Series in Lonato and eighth place at the Open Cup, also in Lonato.

Come i campioni delle categorie KZ2 e OK, anche per Lewis Wherrell (Exprit/TM Racing) si tratta del primo trionfo in una manifestazione by WSK Promotion. Il pilota britannico debutta in occasione della Champions Cup del 2021 nella classe MINI e già nel terzo round della Super Master Series, a Sarno, sale per la prima volta sul podio. Nel 2022 affronta per la prima volta la categoria OKJ e raccoglie un sesto posto nel primo appuntamento dell’Euro Series a Lonato e l’ottava posizione all’Open Cup, sempre a Lonato.

ZULFIKARI ISKENDER* [ Parolin | Iame ]

With victory at the Champions Cup, another WSK trophy enters Iskender Zulfikari’s (Parolin/Iame) display case. The Turkish driver began gaining experience in the MINI class during the 2021 season, while in 2022 he began registering his first significant results. Until, at the WSK Open Cup in Lonato, he won an exciting final sprint, repeating his success with the Final Cup title thanks to fourth place in Sarno and victory in Lonato.

Con la vittoria della Champions Cup, un altro trofeo WSK entra nella bacheca di Iskender Zulfikari (Parolin/ Iame). Il pilota turco inizia a farsi le ossa nella categoria MINI nel corso della stagione 2021, mentre nel 2022 inizia a raccogliere i primi risultati di rilievo. Finché, alla WSK Open Cup di Lonato, vince dopo un’emozionante volata finale, bissando il successo con il titolo della Final Cup grazie a un quarto posto a Sarno e a una vittoria a Lonato.

Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame) wins the first title of his short (for the moment) career. The Ukrainian driver made his MINI debut at the Lonato Open Cup in 2021 and continued his journey in the class the following year, managing to participate in the final of the first round of the Final Cup in Sarno.

Arriva il primo titolo nella breve (al momento) carriera di Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame). Il pilota ucraino esordisce nella MINI alla Open Cup di Lonato del 2021 e prosegue il proprio cammino nella categoria anche l’anno successivo, riuscendo a partecipare alla finale del primo round della Final Cup di Sarno.

Two young hopefuls catch the eye in the KZ2 class. On his debut in the shifter class, Freddie Slater (Birel Art/TM Racing) took pole position in Friday’s qualifying, just ahead of his teammate Cristian Bertuca (Birel Art/TM Racing). In the qualifying heats, Slater recorded two victories and two fastest laps, while Bertuca managed third place in the intermediate standings thanks to two solid Top 5 finishes. The two Birel Art Racing drivers also confirmed their placings after the two prefinals on Sunday morning, while Adrien Renaudin (DR/ Modena Engines) took second place on the starting grid for the final. However, everything changed at the start of the decisive race: Slater and Renaudin got off to a poor start, while Bertuca stormed the field and leapt into the lead. Slater climbed up to second place, but Bertuca was too far ahead and beat the British driver by 3 seconds. After consistently occupying the top positions throughout the weekend, Viacheslav Putiatin (Falcon/TM Racing) finished in third place.

Due giovani di belle speranze si mettono in mostra nella categoria KZ2. Al debutto assoluto nella categoria con il cambio, Freddie Slater (Birel Art/ TM Racing) fa sua la pole position nelle qualifiche di venerdì, proprio davanti al compagno di squadra Cristian Bertuca (Birel Art/TM Racing). Nelle qualifying heat, Slater ottiene un bottino di due vittorie e di due giri veloci, mentre Bertuca rimedia la terza posizione nella classifica intermedia grazie a due solide Top 5. I due portacolori Birel Art Racing confermano le posizioni anche dopo le due prefinali di domenica mattina, mentre al secondo posto, sulla griglia di partenza della finale, si inserisce Adrien Renaudin (DR/Modena Engines). Ma tutto cambia al via della gara decisiva: Slater e Renaudin partono male, mentre Bertuca brucia tutti e balza al comando. Slater recupera fino alla seconda posizione, ma Bertuca è troppo lontano e vince con oltre 3 secondi di vantaggio sul britannico. Dopo aver occupato stabilmente le posizioni di alta classifica per tutto il weekend, Viacheslav Putiatin (Falcon/TM Racing) termina al terzo posto.

In the crucial moment of the weekend, David Walther (Tony Kart/Vortex) beat the competition and won the premiere sinlge-speed kart class. The Champions Cup, however, began with pole position being taken by Dmitry Matveev (KR/Iame), recent winner (in October 2022) of the 2nd round of the Final Cup, ahead of Walther. Both Matveev and Walther recorded two victories in the qualifying heats, but the KR Motorsport standard-bearer added a second-place finish to his tally, while the Koski Motorsport driver managed a third-place finish. After having also triumphed in their respective prefinals, Matveev and Walther were candidates for starring roles in the final. The start from first place on the grid favoured Matveev, who remained in command after the first corner, while Walther dropped back into fourth place. Lap 5 saw a dramatic turn of events: Matveev retired and Walther found himself battling for first place against Martin Molnar (Energy Corse/TM Racing) and Tomass Stolcermanis (Energy Corse/TM Racing). In the end, Walther managed to triumph, with Molnar finishing second and Stolcermanis third.

Nel momento cruciale del weekend, David Walther (Tony Kart/Vortex) batte la concorrenza e vince nella categoria regina dei kart monomarcia. La Champions Cup, però, si apre con la pole position di Dmitry Matveev (KR/Iame), recente vincitore (a ottobre 2022) del 2° round della Final Cup, proprio davanti a Walther. Sia Matveev sia Walther collezionano due vittorie nelle manche eliminatorie, ma il portabandiera di KR Motorsport aggiunge al proprio bottino un secondo posto, al contrario del driver di Koski Motorsport che ottiene un’ulteriore terza posizione. Dopo aver trionfato anche nelle rispettive prefinali, Matveev e Walther si candidano come principali protagonisti della finale. La partenza dalla prima casella favorisce Matveev, al comando anche dopo la prima curva, mentre Walther indietreggia al quarto posto. Al 5° giro arriva il colpo di scena: Matveev si ritira e Walther ingaggia una lotta per la vittoria contro Martin Molnar (Energy Corse/TM Racing) e Tomass Stolcermanis (Energy Corse/TM Racing). Alla fine trionfa proprio Walther, con Molnar secondo e Stolcermanis terzo.

Impeccable performance by Lewis Wherrell (Exprit/ TM Racing) in the OKJ class. The Briton was already out-of-reach in Friday’s qualifying practices - where he took pole position - and continued his weekend with three wins out of three in the qualifying heats, bolstered by success in prefinal A, which he led from start to finish. The final on Sunday afternoon also saw Wherrell cleverly keep his opponents behind him in the early stages and led the race all the way to the finish. The Forza Racing driver crossed the chequered flag in first place, over 2 seconds ahead of Niklas Schaufler (KR/Iame), who started from eighth place on the starting grid and was second at the finish line. Saleh Taym (KR/Iame), Luna Fluxa (KR/Iame) and Filippo Sala (Sodikart/TM Racing) battled for the last spot on the podium, but in the end the German managed to get the better of the Spanish driver, in fourth, and the Italian, in fifth.

Prova impeccabile da parte di Lewis Wherrell (Exprit/TM Racing) nella categoria OKJ. Il britannico risulta irraggiungibile già a partire dalle prove cronometrate di venerdì - dove ottiene la pole position - e prosegue il proprio weekend con tre vittorie su tre nelle qualifying heat alle quali si somma il successo nella prefinale A, vissuta al comando dall’inizio alla fine. Anche nella finale di domenica pomeriggio Wherrell tiene abilmente alle spalle i propri avversari nelle prime fasi e conduce la corsa sempre in testa. Il pilota di Forza Racing termina primo sotto la bandiera a scacchi, con oltre 2 secondi di vantaggio su Niklas Schaufler (KR/ Iame), scattato dall’ottava posizione sulla griglia di partenza e secondo sul traguardo. Saleh Taym (KR/ Iame), Luna Fluxa (KR/Iame) e Filippo Sala (Sodikart/ TM Racing) battagliano per il gradino più basso del podio, ma alla fine è il tedesco a spuntarla sulla spagnola, quarta, e sull’italiano, quinto.

The series of victories recorded by Iskender Zulfikari (Parolin/Iame) continued in the WSK championships, after his success, at the end of last year, at the Open Cup and at the Final Cup. He had a difficult start to the weekend in Lonato, thanks to 25th place in qualifying: nevertheless, the Turkish driver didn’t give up and, on the contrary, fought back with three victories in the qualifying heats and first place in the intermediate standings. Not even 11th place in prefinal A, due to a penalty received for the front spoiler being in the wrong position, deprived the Turkish driver of pole position in the final. At the start, Zulfikari took the lead at the first corner, but was immediately ousted by Dean Hoogendoorn (Alonso Kart/Iame), Keelan Harvick (Parolin/Iame) and Pietro Bagutti (Parolin/TM Racing). Zulfikari climbed back into second place over the space of a few corners and began chasing Hoogendoorn, regaining the lead on lap 7. The final laps saw him defend himself admirably from the attacks of his opponents and he finished ahead of everyone, with Vladimir Ivannikov second, at +0.063 sec, and Bogdan Cosma Cristofor third, at +0.298 sec.

Continua la serie di vittorie di Iskender Zulfikari (Parolin/Iame) nei campionati WSK, dopo il successo, alla fine dello scorso anno, nella Open Cup e nella Final Cup. Anche se per lui il weekend di Lonato inizia in salita con un 25° posto nelle qualifiche: ma il pilota turco non si abbatte e, anzi, ribatte con tre vittorie nelle qualifying heat e la prima posizione nella classifica intermedia. Neanche l’11° posto nella prefinale A, dovuto a una penalità ricevuta per lo spoiler anteriore in posizione non corretta, toglie la pole position in finale al pilota turco. Al via, Zulfikari transita alla prima curva in testa, ma viene subito scalzato da Dean Hoogendoorn (Alonso Kart/Iame), Keelan Harvick (Parolin/Iame) e Pietro Bagutti (Parolin/TM Racing). Zulfikari recupera in poche curve il secondo posto e inizia l’inseguimento su Hoogendoorn, fino a riottenere il comando al 7° giro. Negli ultimi passaggi si difende egregiamente dagli attacchi dei propri avversari e termina davanti a tutti, con Vladimir Ivannikov secondo, a +0.063, e Bogdan Cosma Cristofor terzo, a +0.298.

Prestazione da incorniciare per Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame) al South Garda Karting. Dopo aver siglato il settimo posto nelle qualifiche di venerdì, il pilota ucraino risulta imprendibile per tutto il resto del weekend: infatti, nelle qualifying heat è impeccabile con un totale di tre vittorie su tre gare e nella successiva prefinale B di sabato sera conferma la propria competitività con un ulteriore successo. Tuttavia, per il portacolori Team Driver Racing Kart non è tutto così semplice perché nella decisiva finale di domenica pomeriggio trova due forti avversari in Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame) e Antoine Sylva Venant (KR/Iame). I tre lottano incessantemente per tutta la corsa, però Legenkyi non lascia mai la leadership a ogni passaggio sul traguardo. All’ultimo giro, Venant tenta l’impresa: il belga passa in testa a poche curve dal termine, ma l’ucraino lo beffa all’ultimo tornante e vince la finale. Gorski, invece, perde il contatto con i primi due all’ultimo giro e transita terzo sotto la bandiera a scacchi.

A performance to remember for Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame) at the South Garda Karting circuit. After recording seventh place in Friday’s qualifying, the Ukrainian driver proved uncatchable for the rest of the weekend: indeed, he was impeccable in the qualifying heats with a total of three victories in three races and, in the subsequent prefinal B on Saturday evening, he confirmed his competitiveness with yet another success. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Team Driver Racing Kart standard-bearer, because in the decisive final on Sunday afternoon he came across two strong opponents in Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame) and Antoine Sylva Venant (KR/ Iame). The three fought incessantly throughout the race, but Legenkyi never let the lead slip at any point. On the last lap, Venant attempted a challenge: the Belgian took the lead a few corners from the finish line, but the Ukrainian got the better of him at the last hairpin and won the final. Gorski, on the other hand, lost sight of with the first two on the last lap and took the chequered flag in third.
