WSK Open Series, Rd. 2 2023 | Cremona

We are only at the second round (out of four) of the WSK Open Series but the atmosphere is already really ablaze after the finals staged at the Lonato del Garda circuit. Whether for a victory that escaped in the last minute, or a mistake made on the track, many are already looking for redemption. It is the normal nature of drivers, whether they are beginners or with solid experience behind them: the desire to always compete at the highest level and, obviously, to win, boils in their veins. To everyone, winners and losers, the Open Series now provides a further opportunity, the one branded Cremona Circuit: a modern facility, recently built, not known by all the participants and, above all, which requires great skills at the wheel. A highly anticipated and important new entry in the WSK calendar, which will certainly add a further element of challenge for drivers, mechanics and teams, to the full benefit of the fans who follow us directly from the trackside or from home, via live streaming. Will we see the same faces on the podium on Sunday, or will new protagonists emerge from the group for the title? We just have to make ourselves comfortable and… Find out together!

Siamo solo alla seconda prova (di quattro) della WSK Open Series, ma l’atmosfera è già davvero incandescente, dopo le finali andate in scena sul circuito di Lonato del Garda. Chi per la vittoria sfuggita all’ultimo, chi per un errore commesso in pista, in tanti sono già alla ricerca del riscatto. È la normale natura dei piloti, che siano alle prime armi o con una solida esperienza alle spalle: dentro le loro vene ribolle il desiderio di competere sempre ai massimi livelli e, ovviamente, di vincere. A tuttivincitori e vinti - la Open Series offre ora un’ulteriore opportunità, quella targata Cremona Circuit: un impianto moderno, di recente costruzione, non conosciuto da tutti i partecipanti e, soprattutto, che richiede grandi capacità al volante. Una new-entry attesissima e importante nel calendario WSK, che aggiungerà sicuramente un ulteriore elemento di sfida per piloti, meccanici e team, a tutto vantaggio degli appassionati che ci seguono direttamente da bordo pista oppure da casa, attraverso il live streaming. Vedremo gli stessi volti sul podio la domenica, oppure emergeranno dal gruppo nuovi protagonisti per il titolo? Non ci resta che metterci comodi e… Scoprirlo insieme!

Showdown by Senna Van Walstijn (Sodikart/ TM). The Dutchman immediately started strong with the absolute best time in the qualifying practices on Friday, ahead of Paolo Ippolito (KR/ Iame), Danilo Albanese (KR/Iame) and Emilien Denner (Sodikart/TM). Precisely these four were the main protagonists of the qualifying heats and, at the end of Saturday, Denner was first in the rankings with two victories and a second place, followed by Ippolito, Van Walstijn and Albanese. Senna and Danilo responded to the Frenchman with one victory each in Sunday morning’s prefinals, which brought the Italian and the Dutchman respectively to first and second place. When the traffic lights went out in the final, Van Walstijn immediately took the lead, closely followed by the couple Ippolito-Albanese. The two KR Motorsport drivers, however, failed to find the speed needed to take the lead and the Sodikart driver crossed the finish line first, with Ippolito second and Albanese third. Stan Pex (KR/TM) came fourth, while Denner finished fifth.

Prova di forza da parte di Senna Van Walstijn (Sodikart/TM). L’olandese parte subito forte con il miglior tempo assoluto nelle qualifiche di venerdì, davanti a Paolo Ippolito (KR/Iame), Danilo Albanese (KR/Iame) ed Emilien Denner (Sodikart/TM). Proprio questi quattro sono i principali protagonisti delle qualifying heat e, al termine della giornata di sabato, Denner svetta in cima alla classifica con due vittorie e un secondo posto, seguito da Ippolito, Van Walstijn e Albanese. Senna e Danilo rispondono al francese con una vittoria ciascuno nelle prefinali di domenica mattina, che portano l’italiano e l’olandese rispettivamente al primo posto e al secondo. Allo spegnimento dei semafori della finale, Van Walstijn prende subito il comando, tallonato dalla coppia Ippolito-Albanese. I due piloti KR Motorsport, tuttavia, non riescono a trovare lo spunto necessario per portarsi davanti e il portacolori Sodikart taglia per primo il traguardo finale, con Ippolito secondo e Albanese terzo. Stan Pex (KR/TM) è quarto, mentre Denner chiude quinto.

An excellent performance by Danny Carenini (Energy Corse/Iame) throughout the weekend. The Italian opened Friday’s qualifying practices in pole position (48.151), 26 thousandths of a second faster than Erika Lavazza (Tony Kart/Iame). The Energy Corse driver also imposed his pace in the subsequent qualifying heats, with two victories and a second place. The success of Sunday morning’s prefinal, however, went to Matis Barbe (LN/Iame), with Carenini right behind the Frenchman. There are no stories in the decisive final of the afternoon: Carenini got off perfectly at the start and held the lead until the chequered flag, over two seconds ahead of his pursuers. Andrea Giudice made his way past his rivals and finished second, followed by Barbe in third position: however the Frenchman received a 5-second penalty for an early start and the lowest step of the podium went to Cristian Comanducci (Tony Kart/Iame).

Prestazione eccellente da parte di Danny Carenini (Energy Corse/Iame) nell’arco di tutto il weekend. L’italiano inaugura le prove cronometrate di venerdì con la pole position (48.151), di 26 millesimi di secondo più veloce rispetto a Erika Lavazza (Tony Kart/Iame). Il pilota Energy Corse impone il proprio ritmo anche nelle successive qualifying heat, con due vittorie e un secondo posto. Il successo della prefinale di domenica mattina, invece, va a Matis Barbe (LN/Iame), con Carenini subito alle spalle del francese. Non ci sono storie nella decisiva finale del pomeriggio: Carenini scatta perfettamente al via e mantiene saldo il comando fino alla bandiera a scacchi, con oltre due secondi di vantaggio sugli inseguitori. Andrea Giudice si fa largo tra gli avversari e chiude secondo, seguito da Barbe in terza posizione: però il francese riceve una penalità di 5 secondi per partenza anticipata e cede il gradino più basso del podio a Cristian Comanducci (Tony Kart/Iame).

CORONEL-KUZHNINI, WHAT A DUEL!

Only thanks to an overtaking on the last corner did Rocco Coronel (Redspeed/Iame) achieve his victory. The Dutchman proved to be fast right from the start, with pole position in the qualifying practices (49.585), but in the qualifying heats he gave way to Lorenzo Campos (Tony Kart/Iame), who achieved one victory and two second places, and Riccardo Ferrari (Tony Kart/Iame), winner of the third heat. Coronel recovered one position in the rankings with second place in the prefinal and prepared to give his best in the final. At the start of the last race of the weekend, Campos stayed in the lead after the first corner while Coronel slipped to fourth place. Tiziano Kuzhnini (Tony Kart/Iame) made his way, able to take the lead during the lap 3. However, Coronel wasn’t having it and, recovering to second position, engaged in a long duel with Kuzhnini: the Swiss driver was first, but, in the last hairpin corner, the Dutchman got the best of him and achieved the top step of the podium. Third place, instead, for Campos.

L’olandese si dimostra veloce fin da subito, con la pole position in qualifica (49.585), ma nelle qualifying heat cede il passo a Lorenzo Campos (Tony Kart/ Iame), autore di una vittoria e due secondi posti, e a Riccardo Ferrari (Tony Kart/Iame), vincitore della terza manche. Coronel recupera una posizione in classifica con il secondo posto nella prefinale e si prepara a dare il meglio di sé nella finale. Al via dell’ultima gara del weekend, Campos mantiene la leadership dopo la prima curva mentre Coronel scivola al quarto posto. A farsi strada troviamo Tiziano Kuzhnini (Tony Kart/Iame), in grado di prendere il comando nel corso del 3° giro. Ma Coronel non ci sta e, recuperata la seconda posizione, ingaggia un lungo duello con Kuzhnini: lo svizzero è primo, ma, nell’ultimo tornante, l’olandese lo beffa e conquista il gradino più alto del podio. Terzo posto, invece, per Campos.

The WSK Open Series at South Garda Karting could not have started better. A perfect racing weekend, thanks to the welcoming pre-spring temperatures, which made it possible to fully experience the spectacular battles on the track offered by the over 200 competing drivers.

Once again, the MINI Gr.3 class saw numerous protagonists vying for first place. Initially it was Calleja Williams (Parolin/Iame) who led the group with the best time in Friday’s qualifying practices, followed by three victories and a third place in the subsequent qualifying heats. Calleja was still first in the rankings also at the end of the prefinals on Sunday morning, thanks to his success in prefinal A, and stayed in the lead also at the start of the final. However, the Australian soon found opposition from Vladimir Ivannikov (EKS/TM), Noah Baglin (KR/Iame), Hoogendoorn (KR/Iame), Bogdan Cosma Cristofor (KR/Iame) and Ilie Tristan Crisan (Tony Kart/Vortex). On the lap 5, Hoogendoorn took first place and didn’t let go until the final finish line, while with one overtaking after another Crisan grabbed the place of honour in the sprint only 76 thousandths of a second ahead of Ivannikov, who came third. Calleja slipped to eighth and was then penalized by two places by the stewards for a bad manoeuvre.

Ancora una volta, la categoria MINI Gr.3 vede numerosi protagonisti in lizza per il primo posto. Inizialmente è Calleja Williams (Parolin/Iame) a guidare il gruppo con il miglior tempo nella sessione di qualifica di venerdì, seguito da tre vittorie e un terzo posto nelle successive qualifying heat. Calleja rimane leader della classifica anche al termine delle prefinali di domenica mattina, grazie al successo nella prefinale A, e mantiene il comando anche al via della finale. L’australiano, però, trova presto l’opposizione di Vladimir Ivannikov (EKS/TM), Noah Baglin, (KR/Iame), Hoogendoorn (KR/Iame), Bogdan Cosma Cristofor (KR/Iame) e Ilie Tristan Crisan (Tony Kart/Vortex). Al 5° giro, Hoogendoorn conquista il primo posto e non lo molla più fino al traguardo finale, mentre con un sorpasso dietro l’altro Crisan agguanta in volata la piazza d’onore per soli 76 millesimi di secondo di vantaggio su Ivannikov, terzo. Calleja scivola ottavo, poi penalizzato dai commissari sportivi di due posizioni per una manovra scorretta.

Lonato once again proved to be friendly to Antoine Venant (KR/Iame). In Friday’s qualifying practices, the Belgian finished sixth overall, while Alessandro Truchot (Parolin/TM) recorded the best time of 53.203 seconds. In the subsequent qualifying heats Venant won once and achieved two second places, results that allowed him to rise to first place in the intermediate rankings ahead of Henri Kumpen (Parolin/Iame), who is second, and Truchot, who is third. The success in prefinal A again confirmed Venant in front of everyone, while Sebastian Eskandari Marandi (Tony Kart/Vortex) won prefinal B and settled for second place, with Truchot stable in third place and Kumpen slipping to seventh. Venant remained steady even in the final: the Kidix team driver led all phases of the race and triumphed under the chequered flag. Kumpen regained second position on lap 9 and closed at +0.136 seconds from Venant, while Eskandari Marandi achieved the lowest step of the podium.

Lonato si rivela di nuovo amica di Antoine Venant (KR/Iame). Nelle qualifiche di venerdì, il belga si classifica sesto assoluto, mentre Alessandro Truchot (Parolin/TM) registra il miglior tempo di 53.203 secondi. Venant sigla nelle successive qualifying heat una vittoria e due secondi posti, risultati che gli permettono di salire al comando della classifica intermedia davanti a Henri Kumpen (Parolin/Iame), secondo, e a Truchot, terzo. Il successo nella prefinale A conferma sempre Venant davanti a tutti, mentre Sebastian Eskandari Marandi (Tony Kart/Vortex) vince la prefinale B e s’installa al secondo posto, con Truchot stabile in terza posizione e Kumpen che scivola settimo. Venant non si scompone nemmeno nella finale: il pilota del team Kidix guida tutte le fasi della corsa e trionfa sotto la bandiera a scacchi. Kumpen riottiene la seconda posizione al 9° giro e chiude a +0.136 secondi da Venant, mentre Eskandari Marandi conquista il gradino più basso del podio.
