WSK Open Series, Rd. 3 2023 | Castelletto di Branduzzo

With two events already completed and two more still to come, the Open Series is getting into full swing with highly balanced rankings in every class and with as many as ten different winners in the heart-pounding finals to be held at Lonato del Garda and Cremona. This is a sign of an extremely spirited rivalry amongst the drivers an equal level of competition which, at the moment, makes it difficult to predict who will be crowned as the champion at the end of the last round in Sarno. Better to proceed in small steps and, more precisely, the third round of the championship with the highly anticipated return of the International Circuit 7 Laghi Kart, in Castelletto di Branduzzo. We are confident that we are in for some surprising, fun-filled finals, especially since the drivers will do anything to have their names engraved in the Open Series Hall of Fame, obviously in the name of sportsmanship and respectful driving on the track. From this moment on mistakes, even the smallest of missteps, may seriously affect one’s ranking and there will be no other opportunities to make up for them. Now, competitors must fight with all their might, to make their dreams of victory come true. This is racing, this is the great show of karting.

Due appuntamenti archiviati e due ancora da svolgere: la Open Series entra nel vivo, con le classifiche di tutte le classi ben equilibrate e con addirittura dieci vincitori diversi nelle finali da cardiopalma di Lonato del Garda e Cremona. Segno di un livello di competitività estremamente alto e bilanciato che, al momento, rende difficile prevedere chi si laureerà campione al termine dell’ultimo round di Sarno. Meglio procedere a piccoli passi e, più precisamente, con la terza tappa di campionato e il gradito ritorno della pista 7 Laghi Kart, a Castelletto di Branduzzo. Siamo certi che ci attenderanno delle finali ricche di sorprese e divertimento, soprattutto perché i piloti faranno di tutto pur di lasciare scolpito il proprio nome nella Hall of Fame della Open Series, ovviamente nel segno della sportività e della correttezza in pista. Da questo momento non sono più ammessi passi falsi: anche il più piccolo degli errori potrà costare caro sul proprio posizionamento in classifica e non ci saranno altre occasioni per rimediare. Ora bisogna lottare con tutte le forze, per realizzare i propri sogni di vittoria. Queste sono le corse, questo è il grande spettacolo del karting.

PEX DOMINATES THE RACE

Clear victory by Stan Pex (KR/TM) in the second round of the championship. The Dutch driver begins his dominance during qualifying practices, where he takes the pole position thanks to a time of 46.555 seconds, ahead of Enrico Martinese (KR/Iame) and Alessandro Minetto (Parolin/TM). Pex continues his excellent driving even in the qualifying heats with two victories. He ends up fifth in the third and last heat and leaves the triumph to Daniele Federici (Birel Art/TM). The SP Motorsport driver returns to win on Sunday morning’s prefinals while securing himself as the leader of the intermediate standings. The finals witnesses Pex immediately in the breakaway after the red lights go out, while behind him the duel among Minetto, Filip Wojcik (Kosmic/TM) and Federici for second place becomes very dynamic. Pex crosses the finish line first with a 2.563-second lead over his pursuers, with Minetto able to seize second place after fending off attacks from Federici and Nicholas Taylor (GP Racing/TM). Wojcik, on the other hand, ends up in the last position.

Il pilota olandese inizia il suo dominio già in qualifica, dove ottiene la pole position grazie al crono di 46.555 secondi, davanti a Enrico Martinese (KR/Iame) e ad Alessandro Minetto (Parolin/TM). Pex continua la sua cavalcata anche nelle qualifying heat con un totale di due vittorie. Solo nella terza e ultima manche si classifica quinto e lascia il successo a Daniele Federici (Birel Art/TM). Il pilota SP Motorsport ritorna al successo nella prefinale di domenica mattina e si assicura la leadership della classifica intermedia. La finale vede Pex subito in fuga dopo lo spegnimento dei semafori rossi, mentre dietro lui si anima la battaglia per il secondo posto tra Minetto, Filip Wojcik (Kosmic/ TM) e Federici. Pex taglia per primo il traguardo con un vantaggio di 2.563 secondi sugli inseguitori, con Minetto capace di cogliere il secondo posto dopo essersi difeso dagli attacchi di Federici e di Nicholas Taylor (GP Racing/TM). Wojcik, invece, scivola in ultima posizione.

RATEL SPRINTS INTO FIRST PLACE

The French anthem plays in the X30 Senior for the victory of Andy Ratel (KR/Iame). The transalpine driver starts the weekend with a 12th place in qualifying practices, while Danny Carenini (Energy Corse/ Iame) attains the pole position ahead of Nando Weixelbaumer (Redspeed/Iame). The qualifying heats reshuffle the cards on the table: Weixelbaumer climbs to the top of the intermediate standings thanks to perfect driving that secures him three victories, Ratel is able to make a comeback into second and Carenini is relegated to third position. Ratel takes the second place in the prefinal, a result that gets him the pole position in the finals. The KBK Competition driver keeps the lead at the start of the last race, yet it is Carenini and Andrea Giudice (Tony Kart/Iame) who fight for the lead during the early stages. On lap 9, there is a contact between Carenini and Giudice, which allows Ratel to rocket to the front. The two Italians will subsequently withdraw from the race. Thus, Andy wins the finals ahead of Weixelbaumer, Lin Jingxuan (Parolin/Iame) and Erika Lavazza (Tony Kart/Iame). However, Weixelbaumer receives a 3-second penalty for an improper maneuver against Lavazza that drops him back to fourth place, with Jingxuan second and the Italian driver taking the third position.

Suona l’inno francese nella X30 Senior, per la vittoria di Andy Ratel (KR/Iame). Il transalpino inizia il weekend con un 12° posto in qualifica, mentre Danny Carenini (Energy Corse/Iame) registra la pole position davanti a Nando Weixelbaumer (Redspeed/Iame). Le qualifying heat rimescolano le carte in tavola: Weixelbaumer sale in vetta alla classifica intermedia grazie a uno score perfetto di tre vittorie, Ratel rimonta fino alla seconda posizione mentre Carenini arretra in terza. Ratel si aggiudica la piazza d’onore nella prefinale, risultato che permette di partire dalla prima posizione nella finale. Il pilota KBK Competition mantiene il comando al via dell’ultima gara, ma sono Carenini e Andrea Giudice (Tony Kart/Iame) a contendersi il primato nelle prime fasi. Al 9° giro, Carenini e Giudice si toccano e permettono a Ratel di ritornare davanti. I due italiani, successivamente, si ritireranno. Andy vince così la finale, davanti a Weixelbaumer, Lin Jingxuan (Parolin/Iame) ed Erika Lavazza (Tony Kart/Iame).

Tuttavia, Weixelbaumer riceve 3 secondi di penalità per una manovra scorretta ai danni di Lavazza e retrocede quarto, con Jingxuan secondo e l’italiana terza.

With a final twist, Filippo Pancotti (Tony Kart/Iame) takes the win in the X30 Junior category. The Italian gets off to a strong start with the third best time in qualifying practices, behind Sacha Van’t Pad Bosch (Redspeed/Iame) and David Cosma Cristofor (KR/ Iame), yet at the end of the qualifying heats he slips to sixth position to then recover fifth place after Sunday morning’s prefinal. The finals sees Cosma Cristofor start at the head of the pack, but Van’t Pad Bosch overtakes him on the second lap. Rocco Coronel (Redspeed/Iame) and Tiziano Kuzhnini (Tony Kart/Iame) also enter the battle for the lead, with Pancotti a short distance behind in fifth place. On the last lap Kuzhnini is in the lead, yet Cosma Cristofor makes an all-out attempt on the leader. The two touch, with the Romanian driver first and the Swiss driver sent into the grass. The maneuver is judged to be irregular by the Marshals and Cosma Cristofor is given a 3 second penalty. The victory, then goes to Pancotti, who finishes ahead of Coronel (second) and Kuzhnini (third).

Con un colpo di scena finale, Filippo Pancotti (Tony Kart/Iame) vince nella categoria X30 Junior. L’italiano parte forte con il terzo tempo nelle prove cronometrate, alle spalle di Sacha Van’t Pad Bosch (Redspeed/Iame) e David Cosma Cristofor (KR/ Iame), ma al termine delle qualifying heat scivola sesto salvo poi recuperare il quinto posto dopo la prefinale di domenica mattina. La finale vede Cosma Cristofor partire in testa al gruppo, ma Van’t Pad Bosch lo supera nel corso del secondo giro. Nella battaglia per il comando s’inseriscono anche Rocco Coronel (Redspeed/Iame) e Tiziano Kuzhnini (Tony Kart/Iame), con Pancotti poco distante, al quinto posto. All’ultimo giro è proprio Kuzhnini in testa, ma Cosma Cristofor tenta il tutto e per tutto sul leader: i due si toccano, con il romeno primo e lo svizzero spedito sull’erba. La manovra viene giudicata irregolare dai commissari sportivi e Cosma Cristofor viene penalizzato di 3 secondi. Di conseguenza, la vittoria va nelle mani di Pancotti, davanti a Coronel (secondo) e a Kuzhnini (terzo).

The victory in the MINI Gr.3 category remains uncertain until the last meter in Cremona too. William Calleja (Parolin/Iame) opens the weekend with the best overall time of 53.623 seconds during qualifying practices but has to contend with teammate Iskender Zulfikari (Parolin/Iame) in the subsequent qualifying heats. The Turkish driver garners two more victories, while the Australian chases him in second position with Bogdan Cosma Cristofor (KR/Iame) right behind him. Calleja wins prefinal B and gets the pole position for the finals, ahead of Zulfikari, Bosco Arias Chavarri (KR/Iame) and Cosma Cristofor. After the start of the finals, Dean Hoogendoorn (KR/Iame) soars to the front from fifth position and keeps the lead until the last four laps, when Asher Ochstein (CRG/Iame) and Cosma Cristofor pass the Belgian. It is precisely these two who compete for victory in the final laps, where with an overtaking at the last turn, Cosma Cristofor defeats Ochstein by just 0.222 seconds and captures the victory. The lowest step of the podium goes to Vladimir Ivannikov (EKS/TM), who started 11th, while Hoogendoorn finishes fourth. Calleja withdrew from the race due to a spinout in the last few laps.

Anche a Cremona, la vittoria della categoria MINI Gr.3 rimane incerta fino all’ultimo metro. William Calleja (Parolin/Iame) apre le danze in qualifica con il miglior tempo assoluto di 53.623 secondi, ma deve vedersela con il compagno di squadra Iskender Zulfikari (Parolin/Iame) nelle successive qualifying heat. The MINI Gr.3 U10 sees the final victory of Michele Orlando (IPK/TM), despite a start to the weekend that has him in 16th place in qualifying practices. The pole position, instead, goes to Niccolò Perico (Energy Corse/TM), ahead of Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame). In the first elimination heat, Perico suffers an early withdrawal and slips to the bottom of the standings, while Legenkyi records a second place and, subsequently, two victories that make him jump to the top of the rankings. Nevertheless, the prefinal sees the success of Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame) and hands over the first starting spot of the finals to Sebastian Eskandari-Marandi (Tony Kart/Vortex). At the start of the last race, the Australian driver maintains the lead in the initial laps but is then ousted by Maximus Unt (Tony Kart/TM) and then waves the white flag after a contact with Xavier Lazaro (DR/TM). The new leader Unt gives way to Henri Kumpen (Parolin/Iame), yet it is Michele Orlando (IPK/TM) who takes the lead on the last lap. The Italian is therefore the winner, ahead of Achille Rea (CRG/Iame) in second place and Albert Tamm (Parolin/Iame), ending with the third spot on the podium. They are followed in the standings by Alex Molota (EKS/TM), Edoardo Colucci (Parolin/TM), Unt and Kumpen.

La categoria MINI Gr.3 U10 vede la vittoria finale di Michele Orlando (IPK/TM), nonostante un inizio di weekend che lo vede al 16° posto in qualifica. La pole, invece, va a Niccolò Perico (Energy Corse/ TM), davanti a Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame). Nella prima manche eliminatoria, Perico rimedia un ritiro e scivola sul fondo della classifica, mentre Legenkyi registra un secondo posto e, successivamente, due vittorie che lo fanno balzare in testa alla graduatoria. Tuttavia la prefinale vede il successo di Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame) e consegna la prima casella di partenza della finale a Sebastian EskandariMarandi (Tony Kart/Vortex). Al via dell’ultima gara, l’australiano mantiene il comando nei primi giri, poi è spodestato da Maximus Unt (Tony Kart/TM) e alza bandiera bianca dopo un contatto con Xavier Lazaro (DR/TM). Il nuovo leader Unt lascia il posto a Henri Kumpen (Parolin/Iame), ma è Michele Orlando (IPK/TM) che passa in testa all’ultimo giro: vince così l’italiano, davanti ad Achille Rea (CRG/ Iame), secondo, e ad Albert Tamm (Parolin/Iame), terzo. Seguono in classifica Alex Molota (EKS/TM), Edoardo Colucci (Parolin/TM), Unt e Kumpen.
