EDITORIAL by Luca De Donno

For Pythagoras, an Ancient Greece philosopher and mathematician, 10 was the perfect number. For us at ACI Sport and WSK Promotion, the number 10, while not being perfect in itself, represents an important milestone. Including the 2023 season is now at the starting line, is the number of editions of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. An extraordinary and absolutely result not to be taken for granted, is the outcome of the bet made in 2014 and the commitment and dedication put into organizing what in fact, year after year, has become the benchmark championship as far as the F4 category is concerned. A success, in terms of attendance, well represented for example, by the 40 participants from the Spielberg 2022 round. Yet, over the course this sport’s season, many more young people have been from the karting scene and have taken their first steps into the world of motorsports precisely in the Italian championship. Some of them have even landed in Formula 1 or competed in other world-class series. All of this has been possible thanks, above all, to the trust placed in our project by teams, drivers, professionals and enthusiasts. We look forward to being able to celebrate this special birthday on the track and to officially give the “baptism” to other new, young promising drivers. Who knows, maybe we will see future F1 world champions among them. Only time will tell! Il 10 per Pitagora, filosofo e matematico dell’Antica Grecia, era il numero perfetto. Per noi di ACI Sport e WSK Promotion, il numero 10, pur non sintetizzando la perfezione, rappresenta un traguardo importante: perché tante sono, con questa targata 2023 ormai ai nastri di partenza, le edizioni dell’Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. Un risultato straordinario e assolutamente non scontato, frutto della scommessa fatta nel 2014 e dell’impegno messo in campo nell’organizzare quello che, di fatto, anno dopo anno, è diventato il campionato di riferimento per quanto riguarda la categoria F4. Un successo, in termini di adesioni, ben rappresentato, per esempio, dai 40 partecipanti della tappa di Spielberg 2022. Ma, nel corso delle stagioni, molti di più sono stati i giovani provenienti dal panorama kartistico che hanno intrapreso il primo passo nel mondo dell’automobilismo sportivo proprio nel campionato italiano; addirittura alcuni di loro sono approdati in Formula 1, oppure competono in altre serie di caratura mondiale. Tutto questo è stato possibile grazie, soprattutto, alla fiducia che hanno riposto nel nostro progetto team, piloti, addetti ai lavori e appassionati. Non vediamo l’ora di poter celebrare, con loro, questo compleanno speciale in pista e di “tenere a battesimo” altri nuovi giovani di belle speranze. Chissà, magari tra loro vedremo un futuro campione del mondo di F1. Solo il tempo potrà dirlo!

IMOLA

Lenght: 4,909 mt.

First started in 1953, the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola hosted in its early years some unofficial, non-championship Formula 1 races. On the other hand, in 1980 it is the home of the Italian Grand Prix and introduces the San Marino Grand Prix on a permanent basis from the following year until 2006. From 2020, Imola now returns to be part of the championship calendar. Attivo dal 1953, l’Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola ospita nei primi anni di attività alcune gare di Formula 1 non valide per il campionato. Nel 1980, invece, è la sede del Gran Premio d’Italia e accoglie in pianta stabile il Gran Premio di San Marino dall’anno successivo fino al 2006. Dal 2020 ritorna nuovamente nel calendario.

MISANO ADRIATICO Built in the early 1970s and completely renovated in 2006, Misano World Circuit is one of the top facilities on the Italian and European circuit. The track, dedicated to the late Italian motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli, hosts every year the MotoGP and numerous other internationally renowned 4-wheeler sports events for motorsports enthusiasts. Costruito all’inizio degli anni Settanta e completamente rimodernato nel 2006, il Misano World Circuit è uno degli impianti di punta del panorama italiano ed europeo. Il tracciato, dedicato al compianto motociclista italiano Marco Simoncelli, ospita ogni anno il Motomondiale e diverse serie automobilistiche di valore internazionale.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS Designed and unveiled in 1920, the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps was a road course over 14 km long, which was officially closed in 1979 and replaced by a permanent 7 km track. After several changes over time, in 2007 it reached the current configuration that, every year, hosts the Formula 1 Belgian GP and the famous 24 Hours of Spa, the flagship event of Gran Turismo racing. Progettato nel 1920 e inaugurato nel 1922, il circuito di Spa-Francorchamps era un percorso stradale lungo oltre 14 km, chiuso ufficialmente nel 1979 e sostituito da un impianto permanente da 7 km. Dopo diversi cambiamenti nel corso del tempo, nel 2007 raggiunge l’attuale configurazione che, ogni anno, ospita la Formula 1 e la celebre 24 Ore, manifestazione di punta delle corse Gran Turismo.

MONZA The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, renamed the “Temple of Speed” for its history and layout which allows for higher top speeds, is the third oldest permanent track facility in the world. Completed in 1922, it is the historic venue of the Italian Grand Prix (with 87 out of 92 editions hosted) and one of the tracks with the most presences on the Formula 1 calendar. L’Autodromo Nazionale Monza, ribattezzato il “Tempio della Velocità” per la sua storia e per il suo layout che permette di raggiungere velocità di punta elevatissime, è il terzo impianto permanente più antico al mondo. Terminata la sua realizzazione nel 1922, è la sede storica del Gran Premio d’Italia (87 edizioni ospitate su 92) e uno dei tracciati con più presenze nel calendario della Formula 1.

LE CASTELLET Founded in 1970 with funding from industrialist Paul Ricard, the Le Castellet circuit is one of the most innovative and advanced race tracks in Europe. Characterized by its run-offs, “red and blue” color strips which replaced gravel beds with an abrasive surface, it is known for its very long Mistral straight that precedes the fast Courbe de Signes. Until last year, it hosted the Formula 1 French Grand Prix. Fondato nel 1970 grazie ai finanziamenti dell’industriale Paul Ricard, il circuito di Le Castellet è uno degli impianti più all’avanguardia d’Europa. Caratterizzato da ampie vie di fuga “rosse e blu”, è noto per il lunghissimo rettilineo del Mistral che precede la veloce Courbe de Signes. Fino allo scorso anno ha ospitato il Gran Premio di Francia di Formula 1.

MUGELLO From 1920 to 1970, the Mugello circuit has been one of the most demanding road circuits in Italy, as well as, worldwide, on par with competitions such as the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. The current facility was built in 1974 and has been owned by Ferrari since 1988. This permanent venue for the Italian Grand Prix of the MotoGP, it also hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2020. Dal 1920 al 1970, il circuito del Mugello è stato uno dei più impegnativi circuiti stradali d’Italia e del mondo, al pari di competizioni come la Mille Miglia e la Targa Florio. L’attuale impianto sorge nel 1974 e dal 1988 è di proprietà della Ferrari. Sede fissa del Gran Premio d’Italia del Motomondiale, nel 2020 ha ospitato anche un Gran Premio di Formula 1.

VALLELUNGA Situated just 32 km north of Rome, the Autodromo di Vallelunga was built in 1951 from the transformation of a racecourse. The circuit was extended to its current length of 4,085 meters in 2004 to be, over time, used for some private testing by major Formula 1 teams. It is dedicated to Piero Taruffi, a former driver and engineer who designed the track. A soli 32 km da Roma sorge l’Autodromo di Vallelunga, nato nel 1951 dalla trasformazione di un ippodromo. Il circuito è stato ampliato alla lunghezza attuale di 4.085 metri nel 2004 per essere, nel tempo, utilizzato anche per alcuni test privati dei principali team di Formula 1. È dedicato a Piero Taruffi, ex pilota e ingegnere progettista della pista.

ANDREA KIMI ANTONELLI Prema Racing

That of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, in the 2022 edition of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA, has been an extraordinary ride to the title. The Italian driver, originally from Bologna, collects only one point at the end of the first weekend in Imola. Nevertheless, in the following three events (Misano Adriatico, Spa-Francorchamps and Vallelunga) he achieves a total of eight victories, even the jackpot (three first places, three pole positions and the three fastest laps) in the fourth round on the calendar. With two more victories in Spielberg and Monza on his track record and thanks to the hat-trick at Mugello, Antonelli is crowned champion with a final accumulation of 362 points. However, it was not easy for the Prema Racing driver, with opponents like Alex Dunne, runner-up from Ireland with three victories under his belt, and Rafael Câmara, the Brazilian - Antonelli’s teammate - author of two victories and third in the standings. How can we forget, then, other stars of the 2022 season, such as Charlie Wurz, James Wharton and Kacper Sztuka. In 2023, Antonelli will take a further step forward in the category, always as a member of the Mercedes Junior Team and with the clear intention of reaching the Formula 1.

È stata una cavalcata straordinaria verso il titolo, quella di Andrea Kimi Antonelli nell’edizione 2022 dell’Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. Il pilota italiano, originario di Bologna, raccoglie un solo punto al termine del primo weekend di Imola, ma nei successivi tre appuntamenti (Misano Adriatico, Spa-Francorchamps e Vallelunga) registra un totale di otto vittorie su nove gare, realizzando addirittura l’en-plein (tre primi posti, tre pole position e tre giri veloci) nel quarto round in calendario. Con due ulteriori successi a Spielberg e a Monza nel proprio ruolino di marcia e grazie alla tripletta del Mugello, Antonelli è incoronato campione con un bottino finale di 362 punti. Non è stata comunque una passeggiata per il portacolori Prema Racing, con avversari del calibro di Alex Dunne, vicecampione proveniente dall’Irlanda con tre vittorie all’attivo, e Rafael Câmara, il brasiliano - compagno di squadra di Antonelli - autore di due successi e terzo classificato. Come non ricordare, poi, altri protagonisti della stagione 2022, quali Charlie Wurz, James Wharton e Kacper Sztuka. Nel 2023, Antonelli affronterà un ulteriore passo in avanti per quanto riguarda la categoria, sempre come membro del Mercedes Junior Team e con il chiaro intento di raggiungere la Formula 1.

PREMA RACING With a total of 16 wins, 19 pole positions, 19 fastest laps and 800 points, Prema Racing is back to winning the title reserved for the teams of the Italian championship after a “sabbatical” year. An achievement that is the results of the determination on the track of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Rafael Câmara, Charlie Wurz, James Wharton, Conrad Laursen, they were also reinforced on the Spielberg and Mugello rounds by Ugo Ugochukwu. Con un totale di 16 vittorie, 19 pole position, 19 giri veloci e 800 punti, Prema Racing ritorna a vincere il titolo riservato ai team del campionato italiano dopo un anno “sabbatico”. Antonelli did not only achieve the title of overall champion. In fact, the Italian driver is also the best rookie driver of the 2022 season. A real proof of growth for him, notwithstanding the opposition of Camara, Wurz and Wharton. Having participated in only 3 events (Spielberg, Mugello and Monza) in the 2021 Championship, Antonelli was eligible, as per regulations, to achieve this special ranking in both 2022 and 2021, when he finished fourth. Non solo il titolo di campione assoluto per Antonelli: infatti, il pilota italiano è anche il miglior pilota rookie della stagione 2022. Una vera e propria prova di maturità per lui, nonostante le opposizioni di Camara, Wurz e Wharton. Avendo partecipato a soli 3 appuntamenti (Spielberg, Mugello e Monza) del campionato 2021, Antonelli ha potuto accedere, come da regolamento, a questa speciale classifica sia nel 2022 sia nel 2021, quando si classificò quarto.

Victories Podiums Pole Position

The first absolute champion of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA is Lance Stroll, with a clear record of 10 victories out of 18 races entered. In a few years, the Canadian driver reaches Formula 1, first as a driver for Williams and, subsequently, for Racing Point and Aston Martin.

Coming from Estonia, the second winner of the Italian Championship is the young Ralf Aron. The Prema Powerteam’s standard-bearer conquers the title thanks to an advantage of more than 100 points over the runner-up. This year, Aron will race in the ADAC GT Masters with Mercedes.

Il primo campione in assoluto dell’Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA è Lance Stroll, con un percorso netto fatto di 10 vittorie su 18 gare disputate. In pochi anni, il pilota canadese raggiunge la Formula 1, prima come pilota titolare di Williams e, successivamente, per Racing Point e Aston Martin.

After an intense three-way battle, outsider Marcos Siebert takes the title of the 2016 year. The Argentine driver beats the competition from Mick Schumacher (in the last two years in Formula 1 with Haas) and Raul Guzman. This year he will race in endurance and GT competitions. Dopo un’intensa battaglia a tre, l’outsider Marcos Siebert conquista il titolo dell’edizione 2016. Il pilota argentino batte la concorrenza di Mick Schumacher (negli ultimi due anni in Formula 1 con Haas) e di Raul Guzman. Quest’anno correrà nelle competizioni endurance e GT.

MARCUS ARMSTRONG Victories Podiums Pole Position

Thanks to a steady growth throughout the year and a series of useful results, Marc Armstrong wins the Italian title in 2017. The New Zealand driver, a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy until 2021, made his debut in the IndyCar Series, North America’s highest level of open-wheel racing, this past March. Grazie a una costante crescita durante l’anno e a una serie di risultati utili, Marcus Armstrong ottiene il titolo italiano nel 2017. Il pilota neozelandese, fino al 2021 membro della Ferrari Driver Academy, ha fatto il suo debutto nella IndyCar Series, campionato di punta in America, lo scorso marzo.

The duel between Enzo Fittipaldi and Leonardo Lorandi rewards the Brazilian by a difference of just 21 points at the end of the last race of the 2018 Championship. Emerson Fittipaldi’s grandson will race for the second year in Formula 2, his first as a Red Bull Junior Team driver. Dennis Hauger inflicts one of the biggest gaps ever (136 points) to the runner-up in the 2019 season. The Norwegian, a protégé of the Red Bull Junior Team, is a Formula 3 champion in 2021 and will take part again in the Formula 2 Championship this year. Dennis Hauger infligge uno dei distacchi maggiori di sempre (136 punti) al secondo classificato nella stagione 2019. Maturity and consistency in terms of results rewards Gabriele Minì in the 2020 Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA 2020. The Italian driver, making his debut in the category, achieves the overall title and will take part in the Formula 3 Championship for the very first time this year.

Una stagione brillante per Oliver Bearman nel campionato italiano 2021. Il britannico registra un bottino finale di 343 punti e vince il titolo in occasione dell’ultima tappa del Mugello. Dopo il terzo posto in Formula 3 nel 2022, il membro della Ferrari Driver Academy parteciperà alla Formula 2 nel 2023.

La maturità e la costanza in termini di risultati premia Gabriele Minì nell’Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA 2020. Il pilota italiano, all’esordio nella categoria, centra il titolo assoluto e quest’anno prenderà parte per la prima volta al campionato di Formula 3.

THE F4 SCHOOL The nine editions of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA were attended by many young talented drivers, starting their career in the Italian series which led them to the top of motorsport racing.

The Italian is the runner-up of the first season of the category, beaten only by Lance Stroll. He has been an official Audi driver since 2019 and has been a Formula E test driver.

DEVLIN DEFRANCESCO

First year of single-seater racing for the Canadian in 2016, author of a fifth place as best race result. He has been competing in the United States’s IndyCar Series for two seasons.

MICK SCHUMACHER

The German finishes second in the 2016 Championship and makes his Formula 1 debut with Haas in 2021. From this year, he is a reserve driver for Mercedes and McLaren in the World Championship.

LANDO NORRIS

A podium for the British driver in 2015. In the following years Formula 3 champion and Formula 2 runner-up. He has been racing with McLaren in Formula 1 since 2019. Un podio per il pilota britannico nel 2015, negli anni successivi campione di Formula 3 e vicecampione di Formula 2. Dal 2019 corre con McLaren in Formula 1.

GUANYU ZHOU

Three wins and a second place in the standings for the Chinese driver in the 2015 season. He has been in Formula 1 since last year as an official Alfa Romeo driver.

CHARLES WEERTS

Only one appearance for the Belgian in 2018 who, in the following years, becomes an official Audi driver and wins three Sprint Cup titles in the GT World Challenge Europe. Currently, he races with BMW.

OUR “TEAM” OF TECHNICAL PARTNERS ACI Sport is at the forefront of on-track training for younger drivers and their introduction to competitive racing. The national Federation for motorsports, recognized by CONI, is the main organization in the creation of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA.

WSK Promotion is one of the fundamental pillars for the organization of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA since the first edition, thanks also to the vast experience that Luca De Donno’s organization has accumulated in the most important international karting championships.

The ACI Sport “Michele Alboreto” Federal School, inaugurated in 1982, provides a training path for young drivers taking their first steps in motorsport.
