EDITORIAL Here we are, back in Sweden. After our “first time” last year, the CIK-FIA European Championships return to the great north, for the closing act for non-shifter classes. The Asum Ring is the perfect stage for the wrap-up of this important chapter of the season that has given us tremendous satisfaction. Yet, the action does not end here. In fact, while one championship will go down in the books, the battle for the KF and KFJ World title in September already looms large on the horizon. New trophies are ready to find new champions, but the adrenaline-packed emotion of coming events is the greatest prize of all, for everyone! Luca De Donno WSK Promotion President

BEST LAP In KF, a review of Round 2 results reveals Tom Joyner’s potential as the round winner as soon as the heats, where he never wins, but collects three best laps. In KFJ, Kenny Roosens arrives to the English event as provisional point leader and despite his promising track performance (he too scores three best laps over the heats), it is clear that he fails to materialize a concrete result.

KF - ROUND 2
The 2nd round of the European KF Championship at the PFI Circuit in Brandon defies all predictions as soon as the Qualifyings. The two fastest of Group 1 are Richard Verschoor (Exprit/Vortex) and Juho Valtanen (Kosmic/Vortex). When the other two groups are done, Verschoor’s time (54.188) remains undefeated and the Dutchman conquers pole position. Instead, Valtanen’s time (54.244) turns out to be the 3rd best, with the poleman of Group 3 Nicklas Nielsen (Tony Kart/Vortex) conquering 2nd place at 54.231. The trio is followed by the three who clocked out right behind the Dane in the last group of the day: Pedro Hiltbrand (CRG/Parilla), Lorenzo Travisanutto (Tony Kart/TM Racing) and Alex Vartanyan (Tony Kart/Vortex). Behind them, the drivers who complete Friday’s Top 10 are all from Group 2. Surprisingly, instead, the Top 3 in the championship standings are not among the day’s fastest: point leader Benjamin Hanley (Croc/TM Racing) ranks 8th behind Casper Roes Andersen (FA Kart/Vortex), runner-up Tom Joyner (Zanardi/TM Racing) is down to 16th and Felice Tiene (CRG/Parilla) is as far back as 23rd, despite having topped Group 2 with a time close to those of the day’s best (54.605).

In the Heats, Hanley restores his supremacy, returning to the top spot of the standings by winning three races and placing 2nd in his fourth run. He is followed by an equally outstanding Verschoor, also winner three times. Hiltbrand and Vartanyan also win on Saturday (one race each) and conquer row 2 for the start of the Prefinal. The real star of the day, however, is Tiene, who does an amazing 18-position climb and lands in 5th place, thanks to an excellent set of top 5 results. Juri Vips (FA Kart/Vortex) and Juan Correa (Energy/ TM Racing) also improve, respectively by 7 and 5 positions, and follow in 6th and 7th place. Instead, Nielsen wins two heats, but has to retire from the last race of the day and drops from 2nd to 10th. By Saturday night, it is clear that the championship is all but certain and that a lot can still happen. And, as expected, the unpredictability factor continues to reign supreme into Sunday’s feature action. The start of the Prefinal is nothing short of thrilling. Hanley darts into the lead off grid with Hiltbrand and a fast-pouncing Tiene in hot pursuit; by lap 2, the Brit gets relegated to 3rd, as his two chasers get ahead and settle in the top spots; then one lap later, he

attacks and gets between them. From here Hanley continues to hound Hiltbrand for the lead until lap 10, when he finally finds the opportunity to strike: he takes control and from here pulls away to a hard-fought win. The battle for position behind him gets resolved with Verschoor in 2nd and Hiltbrand in 3rd. In other words, at the end of the Prefinal, the top 3 names are the same as those of the post-heat intermediate standings. Behind them, Correa takes a nice 4th place finish, up 3 spots from the start. But the real surprise comes with Joyner, who achieves an 11-position climb, storming his way up the field with relentless pace and securing an excellent 5th place finish that sets him in hopeful reach for the round victory. The Top 10 of the Prefinal is rounded off by Vartanyan, a fierce-paced Ben Barnicoat (Birel ART/ Parilla) - up 6 positions; Martijn Van Leeuwen (CRG / TM Racing) - who reconfirms his 8th place standing, Nielsen, and a phenomenal Karol Basz (Kosmic/Vortex)- who surprises the field with an outstanding 11-position recovery. Tiene, instead, drops down 7 spots and only places 12th behind Hannes Janker (CRG/Parilla). With these premises, predictions for Sunday’s outcome become literally impossible. And the Final does exactly that: defy all likely guesses. The surprise star of the race emerges immediately: it is Tom Joyner. The Strakka Bhaitech driver starts from fifth place

on grid and after a few laps snatches the lead from Hanley, never to let go. His Mad-Croc connational keeps on the pressure, determined to get back on top, but never finds the chance to make the decisive pounce and in the end has to make do with the 2nd step of the podium. Behind him, it is Correa who gets his way over Verschoor in the battle for the 3rd step of the podium, relegating his Dutch opponent to 4th. Championship-wise, closing 2nd is enough for Hanley to retain his provisional lead at 65 points, but Joyner’s spectacular PFI victory bumps him up to 2nd in the standings and turns him into the main rival for the title, close enough to be menacing (52 points). Tiene closes his Brandon weekend with a debacle, forced to drop out of the Final after a contact. Even so, the Italian manages to salvage his 3rd position in the championship hunt; but his gap from the top is now wider: going into the final round, he sits at 31 points, followed closely by Correa (25 points) and the even trio of Verschoor, Van Leeuwen, and Vartanyan (all at 23 points).

It is a known fact that the non-shifter classes of international karting guarantee intense racing, thrilling action, and highly unpredictable scenarios. Round 2 of the 2015 European Championships at the PFI Circuit in Brandon, England took this truth to the extreme, redesigning the title hunt against all (or most) odds and keeping fans glued to their seat with a simply spectacular show!

KFJ - ROUND 2
The KF-Junior field also opens the 2nd act of its European Championship with a set of surprises in Qualifyings. First of all, the four fastest of Group 1 turn out to be the four fastest overall and stand within less than a tenth of a second. Surprise two, the Top 3 names are all “outsiders” to the title hunt, the way it had left off after the opening round: poleman Konsta Lappalainen (Tony Kart/Vortex), Presley Martono (also Tony Kart/Vortex) and Rasmus Lindh (Ricciardo/Parilla) had left Portimao respectively in 28th, 31st and 23rd place! At the end of the Qualifyings, the 4th fastest is Tony Kart factory driver Clement Novalak (Tony Kart/ Vortex), who came into the PFI weekend standing eighth in the title hunt. Behind him in 5th there is Sun Yueyang (FA Kart/Vortex) and in 6th there is a very fast Marta Garcia (FA Kart/TM Racing) who in Portugal had only managed a 15th place finish. The situation is all the more remarkable considering that the stars of Round 1, instead, are all rather behind: provisional point leader Kenny Roosens (Kosmic/Parilla) is as far down as 41st, while runner-up Caio Collet (Kosmic/ Vortex) is 13th and Christian Lundgaard (Tony Kart/ Vortex) is 16th.

As expected, on Saturday the Heats continue to stir things up, producing 7 different winners over 10 races. Lindh conquers the top spot for the finals, with as many as three race wins to his name, followed by Novalak, Martono, and Garcia, each winners of one race. Behind them in 5th and 6th there are Saturday’s two great surprises, both up by 11 positions: Lundgaard, winner of two races, and Alex Quinn (CRG/Parilla). In tow, completing the Top 10, we find Frederik Vesti (Energy Corse/TM Racing) and Logan Sargeant (FA Kart/Vortex), both up 4 positions compared to Friday; Sami Worship (FA Kart/Vortex), one spot up; and an unfortunate Lappalainen, down 9 positions from 1st of the grid to 10th. Incredibly, the other two heat winners, Ricky Flynn teammates Sun Yueyang and Noah Watt, are only 12th and 18th overall, respectively down 7 and 10 spots compared to the Qualifyings. Between them there is the super hard charger of the day, Ulysse De Pauw (Birel Art/Parilla), who improves from 33rd to 14th. With so many changes, uncertainity reigns supreme on Sunday morning and as the day unfolds, the finals produce yet another stunning turn of tables, with

Presley Martono conquering the win in both the Prefinal and the Final. The battle is intense in both races, though, and the Indonesian has to work hard to achieve his double win. In the Prefinal, Martono jumps off grid behind poleman Lindh and by lap 1 takes over, never to let go until the end. Behind him it is a thrilling show: Garcia immediately jumps into 2nd and stays there until lap 6; here Lindh gets ahead of her and at the next lap attempts an attack on the leader and goes off track; the debacle causes Garcia to lose speed and eventually she drops to 4th and then 5th. The one who takes advantage of the situation is Quinn, who storms up into 2nd, where he stays until the checkered. In the battle for 3rd, it is Novalak who holds the spot until two laps from the end, when De Pauw catches up to him and takes over, completing his phenomenal 11-position rise with a 3rd place finish. Sergeant and Garcia round off the Top 5. Instead, Yueyang sets the fast lap of the race, but is down to 14th by the end. If the Prefinal is thrilling, the Final is simply adrenalinepacked from start to finish. Martono darts in the lead from pole position, with De Pauw, Garcia and Quinn in hot pursuit, then by lap 2 his chasers get ahead of him and he is down to 4th. On lap 4, the Spaniard loses her position to Quinn, who settles in 2nd, and 6 laps later, she is also passed by a determined Martono, who moves into 3rd on the Brit’s heels. Two more laps

and the Indonesian gets his way over Quinn, taking 2nd place. From here, the Baby Race driver starts to narrow the gap from De Pauw for the top spot, keeping up a great pace and scoring the best lap of the race. Four laps from the end, Martono finally finds an opening, conquers the lead and pulls way as fast as he can for a phenomenal round victory. Behind him, it’s a constant change of positions for the remaining laps, with hard-chargers Sergeant and Novalak working their way into the duel between De Pauw, Garcia and Quinn. In the very end, Quinn and Novalak manage to complete the podium. Right behind them are two super surprises: David Vidales (Energy Corse/ TM Racing) and Ivan Shvetsov (Tony Kart/Vortex), respectively up 11 and 15 positions from the start and 4th and 5th at the finish-line. Garcia is only 6th at the flag, followed by an excellent Roosens, who salvages his championship leadership with an amazing 14-spot rebound into 7th. Sergeant and De Pauw, instead, make contact towards the end of the Final and unexpectedly drop to 18th and 19th. Needless to say, the PFI round changes the championship scenario significantly. Roosens is still in control with 44 points, but Novalak (38) and the even-duo of Martono and Lundgaard (36) are now a close threat.
