KZ - ROUND 2

The second round in Zuera opens with defending title holder Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex) on top. The Italian takes pole position with an unexpected last dash in the Qualifying race that sees him first across the finish by 127 thousandths over Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM Racing) and 161 thousandths over point leader and teammate Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart/Vortex). The next ones up, 4th through 7th, are Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions/TM Racing), Bas Lammers (Formula K/Parilla), Arnaud Kozlinski (Sodi/ TM Racing), and Simo Puhakka (CRG/Maxter). Other names that are usually on top in KZ are further down: Jordon Lennox-Lamb (Birel Art/Parilla) is 11th, Paolo De Conto (CRG/Maxter) is 13th and Jonathan Thonon (Praga/Parilla) is as far back as 17th. In the heats, Ardigò confirms he is the man to beat in Zuera: he wins both of his races (conquering the second one with two splendid overtakes) and secures pole position for Sunday. Camponeschi wins the only race in which Ardigò is 2nd and conquers the other spot on front row for the Prefinal. In row 2 behind the Tony Kart duo, but with lap times that have nothing to envy, there are Hanley and Kozlinski. Abbasse drops

to 5th, followed by the trio of Patrik Hajek (Praga/ Parilla), Lennox-Lamb, and Jorrit Pex (Interpid/TM Racing) – each 4 positions up from the Qualifyings. Andrea Dalè (CRG/Maxter) proves to be the steady one, confirming his 9th place standing over Douglas Lundberg (Kosmic/Vortex) and De Conto (respectively down 2 and up 2). The ones who take a serious drop in the charts are Lammers, who loses 8 positions and places 13th, and Puhakka, down 12 spots to 19th. In the Prefinal, Camponeschi manages to get his way over Ardigò, who posts the best lap of the race in his attempt to reply, but in the end has to settle for 2nd. Behind them, Abbasse wins the battle for 3rd place over Lennox-Lamb, but both manage to outrun Hanley, 5th at the finish. The true rebound stars of the Prefinal are Mirko Torsellini (Ricciardo Kart/TM Racing), 8th behind Hajek and Pex, after an amazing 14 position climb, and Andreas Backman (Komsic/Vortex), up 11 spots and 10th at the flag behind a great Tuomas Tujula (Croc Promotions/TM Racing). The big slip, instead, comes for Kozlinski, out after 3 laps and down to 17th, Lammers, penalized for an incorrect fairing position, and De Conto, 11th at the finish-line, but

is no stopping Ardigò until lap 11, when Camponeschi finally finds an opening and takes over, never to let go until the finish. Behind them the battle for 3rd is again between Lennox-Lamb and Hanley, who posts the best lap of the race on his rebound effort. The two close in this order, but then switch places after the race is over, when the Birel ART driver is assigned a penalty. Abbasse rounds off the top 5, followed by Pex and hard-charging Lammers, up 8 positions. As we enter the grand finale in Genk, Ardigò is in a tight spot: 2nd behind Camponeschi by 11 points and just 3 units ahead of Hanley. Hajek follows more detached in 4th place, but is technically still in contention for the podium.

excluded at the end of the race, for having stopped to fix his bumper on the return lap. Following the weekend’s dynamic momentum, the Final lives up to expectations, producing a breathtaking duel among the Tony Kart teammates and intense battles behind them. Camponeschi dashes from pole position and maintans control, with Ardigò virtually glued to his bumper, and, a hard-charging LennoxLamb pulling away from the group, in hot pursuit of the two. On lap 2, Ardigò gets ahead of his teammate and after three high-speed laps bumper to bumper, on lap 5 the Italians are able to build a 2 second gap from their British chaser, after he blocks an attack from Hanley and sends him down to 6th. ACADEMY - ROUND 1

In Zuera, Europe’s top shifter drivers shared track time with the first round of the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy, the one-make championship supported by Parolin Racing that is dedicated to the world’s young promises and that this year welcomes as many as 50 drivers from 35 nations. After the qualifyings, the top 5 names were Théo Nouet (France), Alejandro Lahoz Lopez (Spain), Callum Bradshaw (UK), Xavier Lloveras Brunet (Spain) and Alfie Brown (again UK). By Saturday night, after a full day of heat races, it is Brown who is sitting on top of the standings, without any wins. In fact, two second place finishes were enough for him to land pole for the finals: a clear sign of the intense level of competition on field. The heat winners are the Spanish trio of Lahoz Lopez, Lloveras Brunet, and Academy “veteran” Marta Garcia Lopez, who in the combined standings place respectively 2nd, 3rd, and 5th - with Garcia Lopez on a promising rise from her 11th time on Friday. The Iberic triplet is “interrupted” by Russian driver Zakhar Slutskiy, who also improves his standing from 9th to 4th and earns his place among the leading pack going into the key phase of the round on Sunday.

In the Prefinal, Brown retains the lead, commanding from start to finish, with Lloveras Brunet 2nd the whole time and only 4 tenths off at the chequered. In an adrenaline-driven battle for 3rd place, Lahoz Lopez manages to contain Bradshaw’s fury, as he climbs up 9 positions after the slip in his last heat. Slutskiy closes 5th, followed by White, who posts the best lap of the race in his effort to defend from a pressing Ugo De Wilde. The field seems settled going into the Final, instead here the tables turn, with Garcia Lopez producing a masterful run on her home turf. The Academy “lady” sponsored by the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission posts the best lap and takes an authoritative 2.8 second victory over Brown. Behind them, Slutskiy beats Lloveras Brunet to the 3rd step of the podium. Following in 5th and 6th there are the two fast climbers of the race: Brazil’s Murilo Della Colletta, up 6, and Sweden’s Alfred Nilsson, up 13. Friday’s poleman Nouet, instead, closes 12th, but out of a field of 50 the result is still something to be proud of. In the general standings, Garcia Lopez and Brown lead just 1 point apart (31 and 30), followed by Slutskiy (23), Lloveras Brunet (21), Lahoz Lopez (18), and White (13).

KZ2 - ROUND 2

Round 2 in Zuera starts with Thomas Laurent (Tony Kart/Vortex) in pole position, followed by his Tony Kart teammate Paolo Besancenez. Sweden’s Joel Johansson (Energy Corse/TM Racing) shines as the third fastest overall of the Qualifyings, followed by Round 1 surprise-man Pedro Hiltbrand (CRG/Maxter), here on his home soil. While all of Sarno’s “good takers” manage to make the top 15, championship leader Andreas Fasberg (Tony Kart/Vortex) is as far back as 31st. With the leader in difficulty and overall gaps down to a minimum, featuring 26 drivers in the range of half a second, the Spanish event begins with the sense that the title hunt might get seriously redefined. On Saturday evening, after the heats, the two names ready to start the Prefinal from front row are Besancenez, winner of all four of his races, and Johansson, winner of two races and giving the impression that we should forget about his dull championship start in Sarno. The hard-chargers of the heats are Italian Francesco Celenta (Parolin/ TM Racing), who improves his standing from 8th to 3rd over Hiltbrand, and Thomas Mich (Birel Art/

10

TM Racing), who recovers 11 positions and places 6th behind Marijn Kremers (Birel Art/Parilla). Tom Lorkowski (Righetti Ridolfi/Modena Engines), Luca Corberi (Tony Kart/Vortex), Lorenzo Camplese (Formula K/Parilla) and Jorge Pescador (Praga/ Parilla) round off the Top 10. What about Friday’s top qualifier Laurent? Despite excellent results in his last two races (twice 2nd), his difficulties in the first two heats set him as far down as 21st going into Sunday. Recovery already seems underway, instead, for point leader Fasberg, who improves his initial standing by 17 positions and rises to 16th. The expected shuffling of positions takes a serious turn in the Prefinal, where Celenta relegates Besancenez to 2nd as soon as lap 2 and goes on to take an uncontested victory. Despite his efforts, the French poleman fails to get back at the Italian and on lap 9 even gets passed by Hiltbrand, returning to 2nd place only on the last lap, when Celenta is gone for the win. Fourth behind the French-Spanish duo there is Johansson, who dropped there in the early laps and then had to defend from hard-charging Corberi, 5th on his bumper until the finish. The other Italian

pole and leads from green to chequered, but the battle for the other top positions sees Hiltbrand, Johansson, and Besancenez duel until the very last lap, where they cross the line in this order. Then, at the end of the race, there is the unexpected twist: Celenta receives a 5 second penalty for “jump start” and gets dropped to 6th, promoting his chasers to the podium and allowing Corberi and Pescador to round off the top 5. The top 4 of the Zuera Final are now also the leading names of the title hunt: Hiltbrand commands with 52 points, followed by Johansson, Besancenez and Corberi - all at 35 points. Fasberg has dropped from 1st to 5th, but remains in full contention with 34 points, followed by Kremers at 29 points.

front-runner, Camplese, is not as lucky, but just as impressive: he posts the best lap of the race in the effort to make up for his early slip and return to where he started, 9th. The one who despairs, instead, is Fasberg: point leader at the start of the Zuera round, “lost” in the qualifyings, on the rebound in the heats, in the Prefinal he does another 8 position climb, but then gets excluded for stopping to fix his front bumper. His round hopes are shot. The Prefinal also takes a toll in the way of contacts on Kremers, who slides from 5th to 20th, Lorkowski, from 7th to 28th, and Maik Siebecke (CRG/Modena Engines), from 11th to 31st. With such a fast-changing scenario, the Zuera Final proves as thrilling as expected. Celenta starts from
