EDITORIAL How great! I know you are used to hearing WSK Promotion get excited on the eve of a new race event. This time we are more enthusiastic than usual. Why? Because we are taking the European Championship as far north as it has ever been, to the shores of the Baltic Sea. It is always a promising sign when the racing world widens its horizon and goes beyond the traditional circuits that have made karting history, to discover new grounds and, with them, new emotions. So welcome to Sweden! May the KZ and KZ2 have the best closing round possible, framed by this inspiring landscape where the sun seems to always shine. Luca De Donno WSK Promotion President

KZ ROUND 2 - REPORT
The Wackersdorf weekend opens with Rick Dreezen (Zanardi/Parilla) in pole position, followed by Felice Tiene (CRG/Maxter), the best of group 2, who is competing in the KZ as a wild card. Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex) runs the third fastest time and Thomas Laurent (Tony Kart/Vortex) surprises everyone by placing fourth ahead of top names like Arnaud Kozlinski (Intrepid/TM), Bas Lammers (Formula K/Parilla) and Jorrit Pex (CRG/TM). The heats turn in favor of Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/ Vortex), who seems determined to retain the championship leadership and takes a double win. In each race, however, he has to fend off attacks by Dreezen and Lammers, 2nd and 3rd both times. Behind them in the intermediate standings there are Pex (fifth in both heats) and Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/ TM). Surprisingly, Paolo De Conto (Birel/Tm) continues to miss from the top end, as technical problems get in the way: he is 16th going into the prefinal. Two other top-end names - Jonathan Thonon (Praga/Parilla) and Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG/Maxter) - are also delayed after tough qualifyings: eighth and eleventh respectively. And yet, in the end, the one who conquers the round
04
victory is precisely Thonon. In the final the Belgian starts from eighth on grid, leaps immediately into fourth place and sets off on a charge for the top: after four laps he is third, one lap later he gets past the lead duo of Lammers and Dreezen and takes control. In the end, Dreezen manages to cross the finish line ahead of Lammers, followed closely by Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart/Vortex). Behind the four there are Lennox- Lamb (CRG/Maxter), Ben Hanley (Art GP/TM), also sixth in the prefinal, and an impressive Paolo De Conto (Birel/ TM) who makes up for a bad start of the weekend with an impressive climb past 20 rivals and a decisive move on Jorrit Pex (CRG/TM) a few laps from the end, to claim seventh place at the checkered. On the other end of the spectrum, there is wild card Felice Tiene, who in the final got pushed all the way down 17th. The weekend ends as it started for Marco Ardigò: not well. Technical glitches again compromised his impressive recovery attempt in the final, where he raced within the same hundredth of a second as the top 5 and De Conto Ardigò is now behind Dreezen in the point standings of this incredibly competitive class.

KZ2 ROUND 2 - REPORT
In Wackersdorf’s qualifyings Simone Brenna (TB Kart/ Modena Engines) takes pole position, followed by teammate Kristijan Habulin and by Finn Kooijman (CRG/ TM). As proof of how tight the games are, Genk’s top 3 are in the lower end of the timed practice chart: round 1 winner Andrea Dalè (CRG/Maxter) is sixteenth, Andreas Sebastian Hansen (Tony Kart/Vortex) is forty-sixth and Dalè’s teammate Fabian Federer is thirty-first. On the other hand, Jan Midrla (Birel/TM) seems determined to make up for a tough first round: he sets the sixth fastest time on Friday, then goes on to conquer the top spot for the prefinal by winning 4 out of 5 of his heats. Brenna is next to him on the prefinal grid, followed by Koojman and Ryan Van Der Burgt (DR/TM), up 10 spots from Friday. The final starts with a wet track, but the action is no less intense. Grid leader Jan Midrla sprints into top spot and stays there until Mike Siebecke (CRG/Modena Engines), sixth on grid, charges his way past him and momentarily takes control. The German eventually loses the lead to Simas Juodvirsis (Energy/Maxter), who has worked his way past 11 other rivals and does one last decisive pass
06
to snatch control and fly off towards victory. Behind him, battle ensues: Midrla works his way back into second place with a pass on Siebecke on lap 22. The German goes off track, has to restart his engine, gets back on and pushes hard, but eventually loses the last step of the podium to Norris (Mach1/TM). After the race, there is one more twist: Midrla gets a ten second penalty for his pass on Siebeck and is pushed back to sixth, so Norris and Siebeck rise on the podium. Menno Paauwe (Birel/TM) does a great job of starting sixteenth and ending sixth (scoring the best lap of the race) and Luca Corberi (Kosmic/Vortex) is seventh behind him, after a hard charge past 12 rivals. Joel Johansonn (Righetti/Parilla) and Fabian Federer (CRG/ Maxter) do even more impressive rebounds (respectively 22 and 20 positions), but their race ends midway, when they clash as they are running right behind the top 5. Juodvirsis is currently the championship leader, followed by Midrla. Dalè is down to third, after closing the weekend with a ten second penalty in the prefinal and a fourteenth place finish in the final behind Brenna, victim of a contact at the start that compromised his chances.

The second round of the KZ and KZ2 European Championship in Wackersdorf included an unexpected variable: changing weather conditions. Rainfall and sunhine alternated all weekend, changing track conditions form wet to dry. Even so, the event was a great success and both classes offered fans a fantastic show of passes, unexpected twists and great duels.

KFJ ROUND 2 - REPORT
Zuera, Spain, May 31-June 1: this was the last time the KFJ was on track, for the second round of its European title hunt. That weekend Anton Haaga (Kosmic/LKE) became a menacing presence in the championship standings, after a perfect weekend that brought him from 0 to 40 points. Until then, the Swede was an “outsider”, but after four heat wins and a double win in the prefinal and final, he has proven he is among the main title contenders- and there are many. His Spanish weekend was spotless, but it was no walk in the park. In the first half of the final he has to fend off the serious threat posed by Daniel Ticktum (Zanardi/Parilla) and Mick Junior (Tony Kart/Vortex), both of whom manage to snatch the top spot for a few laps. Towards the end of the race it is Benjamin Lessennes (Kosmic/Parilla) who tries to attack. In the end the only one of the three rivals who rises on the podium with Haaga is Ticktum, who is second across the finish-line. Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart/ Vortex) is the one who claims the third post, after an amazing climb past 15 rivals that more than made up for disappointing qualifyings and heats. For the other two victory contenders, Mick Junior and Lessennes,
10
the weekend came to an end a few laps from the end of the final, when they clash in the attempt to rise back up to the top. The closing phase of the race also turned into disaster for James Pull (Tony Kart/Vortex) who slid off track and, unfortunately, had to be carried away by ambulance. Passes, unexpected clashes, and even an off-track injury: the end result of such a heated race was Lessenness’ exclusion and the appearance of new names in the top end of the chart. A case in point is the surprising presence up front of Artem Petrov (DR/TM), never below sixth place all weekend and 4th across the final finish-line. In addition, some for whom the weekend turned from good to bad managed to rise past hardship. This is especially true of Devlin Defrancesco (Tony Kart/Vortex), who was forced to retire from the prefinal due to a clash, but in the final charged past 25 rivals to close fifth and go home with precious points. Speaking of points, Enaam Ahmed is still the provisional championship leader, but Defrancesco is just 1 point behind him (46) and Haaga is now third up. Right behind there is Logan Sargeant (38 points), who closed the Zuera final in sixth place behind Defrancesco.

KF ROUND BEFORE THE 2 REPORT LAST ACT: KZ & This is the closing act of the CIK-FIA European Championship for the KZ and KZ2 and the title hunt is wide open in both classes for two reasons. The first is that there are still 35 points up for grabs, quite a lot. The second has to do with an important rule: the title of champion will be awarded to the driver who will have collected the most points by the end of the championship, but the point count will be done after everyone has discareded his worst heat result and his worst final result. Trying to predict the utlimate winner or even just trying to determine who is better off than others on the eve of this final round is thus virtually impossible. Anything can really still happen. We’ll have to wait to “subtract” the worst results and add it all up. One thing is certain, the winner will be the fastest, the steadiest, and the most skilled - in one word, the best.
