EDITORIAL It feels like it was a minute ago, just the time to stamp a breathtaking, nerve-wracking, ultra-fast lap. Instead… it’s been six months. It was early May when the international karting scene met in Muro Leccese to contend the first leg of the CIKFIA European “tour”. Now, 180 days and a couple hundreds of kilometers later, it is Sarno’s turn to offer the stage for the final act of this exhilarating season, ready to crown the KZ World Champion and hand the International Super Cup to the best KZ2 driver on earth. This is going to be an unforgettable weekend, packed with thrills and action, and it will fly by in a heartbeat, leaving us with the feeling that just a moment went by - the moment of glory of world karting! CIRCUIT

NEAPOLITAN FLAIR 1,699 meters is not a short distance for a karting track! Length is what makes the Napoli International Circuit in Sarno one of the most fascinating venues of the international karting scene. Ever since it hosted the European Championship in 1999, the facility has been home to major events, including several world title hunts.

TRACK CHARACTERISTICS Length: 1699 m Width: 8-10 m Surface: 140,000 sqm

Circuito Internazionale Napoli via Sarno-Palma 84087 Sarno (SA), Italy

Besides being beautifully designed and being one of the longest kart racing circuits in the world, the Sarno facility is famous for its main straight, where karts reach record high speeds. The venue right outside of Naples (just 50 kilometers) is also appreciated for its top notch service area, a state of the art race secretariat and a fully equipped paddock that includes a press room for reporters and photographers, a web broadcasting office, live timing stations, a CCTV center, a first aid emergency room and stands that can hold as many as 5000 fans.

HISTORY

D. FORÈ

THE GOLDEN BOYS: KZ WORLD 1998 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - FORMULA SUPER A 2000 WORLD CUP - FORMULA SUPER A 2000 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - FORMULA SUPER A 2004 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - FORMULA A 2006 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - FORMULA A 2006 WORLD CUP - SUPER-ICC 2008 WORLD CUP - KF1

M. ARDIGÒ

Forty years old and not feeling it. Mister Forè has been racing most of his life, but he is always, invariably, up front. As he says: “the day I stop having fun, I’ll be ready to quit”; apparently, though, that day is still far away. For now, he is busy adding to his rich resume, which includes five world titles (with incredible twin wins of both the World Championship and the World Cup in 2000 and again in 2006). He has more experience most kids could ever dream of and his love for kart racing is second to no one.

2007 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - KF1 2007 WORLD CUP - KF1 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - KF1

2012 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - KF1

He only has one World title to his name. It was 2012, the championship was over two rounds in Asia, and he went home as the winner, earning his right to belong to the “club of champions”. Today Camponeschi is one of the KZ leaders of the Tony Kart Racing team (the other one is Ardigò) and in 2014 he has been racing to win all year long.

A. KOZLINSKI

F. CAMPONESCHI

It’s true, the last time he won a world title was 6 years ago, but he is still one of the top names on international karting, appreciated for his elegant driving style and for exemplary sportsmanship, on and off track. He climbed to the top of the world for two years in a row, in 2007 (when he also won the World Cup) and in 2008. So far this season he has already lifted the 2014 WSK Super Master Series trophy, dominating in both wet and dry conditions.

2006 WORLD CUP - FORMULA A 2009 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - SKF

The French driver is one of the senators of this year’s KZ class. After winning the Formula A World Cup in 2006, he became Karting World Champion in 2009 in Macao, China. The triumph came as the reward of a long-lasting effort that had taken him close to the top step of the podium more than once. Kozlinzki has a vast experience and in this one-off world hunt he could be “deadly”.

J. THONON

STARS ON TRACK IN SARNO 2007 WORLD CUP - KZ1 2008 WORLD CUP - KZ1 2009 WORLD CUP - KZ1 2011 WORLD CUP - KZ1

B. LAMMERS

He has been decorated with top honors at the forefront of the gearbox karting field 4 times already. The only “stain” to this stellar achievement, if we really must find one, is that each time it was a World Cup, so he can’t claim the title of World Champion. In 2014 the Belgian got terribly close to winning the KZ European title, ”graduating” as vice-champion. Today, in Sarno he has his eye on the ultimate prize.

2010 WORLD CUP - KZ1 2012 WORLD CUP - KZ1

F. TIENE

J. LENNOX LAMB

Seeing this Dutch talent race is always a great pleasure. Few professionals have as much fun as he does while doing their job and his personality is like a vortex of enthusiasm. In 2010 he conquered the World Cup in Braga, Portugal, with a wonderful closing pass over Jeremy Iglesias. Bas will again cross paths with his French rival on the hunt for the 2014 World crown this weekend.

2012 WORLD CUP - KZ2

The Brit is the youngest of the 8 former title holders lined up here in Sarno for the 2014 World KZ Championship. His triumph dates back to 2012, when he proved to be the globe’s best KZ2 driver. Today he is 22 years old and could have finally come of age and have acquired the maturity it takes to aim for prestige at a whole new level.

2012 WORLD CUP - KF2

He is one of four drivers (along with Riccardo Negro, Ben Hanley, and Callum Ilott) who have already competed at a world event this year. In fact, Tiene raced for the 2014 KF title in Essay, France. How did he do? He “only” made the top 10, although he placed as best of the Italians. Yet, he managed to be the world’s best at least once: in 2012, when he won the KF2 World Cup. He’s done it before, so (why not?) he could do it again and this time as Champion.

05

WINNERS

KF WORLD CHAMPION Conquering the world title was no easy feat, but in the end Lando Norris succeeded. The truly amazing thing is that this counts as his first and only victory in KF so far. Indeed, at his first season in the category, Norris took his debut triumph in the most important event on schedule.

“Now that he has moved up to the KF, he won’t be able to keep up his winning style”. Comments of this kind were quite frequent around the paddock of the first international races of the season. Actually, skepticism about Lando Norris’ potential ran high all year long, there’s no point hiding it. In all honesty, his year as a KF rookie did not start off too well. He seemed to be suffering from the category change and in his first season outings he no longer seemed to be the speed-demon we had known him as in 2013. The 15 year old Ricky Flynn Motorsport official must have hunkered down to some real hard work, hoping that serious effort, determination, and will power would allow him to prove, once again, that he is the best. And that’s how it went. It took time for the right opportunity to present itself, but when it did, Norris made it worth the wait. In fact, the World title hunt in Essay was his first KF victory. To put it another way, when he finally won, he did it as the World Champion, casting away all doubts about his innate talent.

06

KFJ WORLD CHAMPION The more one wins, the hungrier for victory one gets - just ask Enaam Ahmed, who this year has dominated every competition he raced in. The last of his long list of 2014 takings was the European crown, but he must have thought the shelf looked incomplete without the World scepter.

Enaam Ahmed won every possible title available in 2014 and his World conquest is the best possible ending to a perfect season. The Ricky Flynn Motorsport British official once again imposed his supremacy in Essay, dominating the weekend from start to finish, beginning with the best time in qualifying practice, which means pole position. And to think that, even with all the victories he collected, he still hadn’t stamped a pole position yet this year! In the hunt for the World title the 14 year old gave signs of an incredible “growth spurt” and newfound maturity. It was as if all the achievements of the year had made him aware of being the strongest in his class and proving it had become the easiest thing to do. The greatest quality of the new World Champion is perhaps his driving style. Carefree, happy, enjoying himself: this is the attitude that characterized all his triumphs so far. “Winning and having fun doing it” - this might sounds like a marketing slogan, but it is simply Enaam Ahmed’s wonderful approach to racing and to life.

TECH FOCUS

KZ & KZ2 COMPARED The KZ class, the top expression of gearbox karting, and the KZ2, the shifter entry class, have the same vehicle and engine (40 Hp) requirements, but different shift system and tire mesh specifications. In addition, entry in the KZ is strictly merit-based.

GEARBOX:

DISPLACEMENT:

The gearbox has to be CIK-FIA homologated with 3 to 6 gears. In the KZ2 the gearbox control is handoperated and exclusively mechanical, while in the KZ it can be either handoperated or electro-mechanical.

For both classes, technical regulations mandate a displacement volume of 125 cc and a carburetor diameter of 30 mm maximum.

TIRES:

WEIGHT:

The KZ requires homologated prime type tires, while the KZ2 allows the option between homologated prime and option type. The prescribed make for both classes in 2014 is Bridgestone.

The maximum limit for both of the shifter classes (KZ and KZ2) is 175 kilograms, including the driver.

FUN FACTS

THE CELEB FACTOR The top category of gearbox karting offers a great driving experience, which is why motorsport celebrities (and not only!) often return to their KZ origins for some serious fun.

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, karts are my true love … after my wife, of course!” – this is how the 7-time F1 World champion commented his experience in Sarno at the 2013 WSK Super Master Series. A decade or so earlier, in 2001, he took part to the fourth round of the World Championship in Kerpen, even though the class was the non-shifter FSA. He placed second, behind Sauro Cesetti.

JORGE LORENZO His father manages a go kart and minimoto track in Spain, so Lorenzo grew up on two and four wheel racing. He obviously found his path: it takes some natural talent to win four Moto GP world championships. Yet, the motorcycle star still makes sure to get some karting thrills. One of his last times on track was this past Spring at the 7 Laghi track in Castelletto di Branduzzo, Italy.

FERNANDO ALONSO Ferrari’s Spanish star driver is more than a huge karting fan, he actually trains for Formula 1 races on KZ karts. One of his most memorable karting runs of the past few years was in Lonato, when he came to a dead standstill on track to make a phone call to Robert Kubica and ask him to join him for some fun. The Pole, of course, said yes!

JAIME ALGUERSUARI He made history as the youngest driver to ever debut in Formula 1, until Daniil Kvjat and then Max Verstappen “snatched” the record. The Spaniard went back to karts in 2013 to play his chances at the KZ world title in Varennes, France. He made the top 10 (9th).

MICHAEL FASSBENDER What does a Hollywood star have to do with KZ karting? Strange, but true, the 2014 Oscar nominee (best supporting actor in the film 12 Years A Slave) is a mad fan of motorsports and gearbox karting in particular. This year he made a trip to Castelletto di Branduzzo, Italy and spent an intense morning doing rounds on a private run far away from the cameras.

ACADEMY REPORT

ROUND 2 ACTION The CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy is down to the wire. This weekend in Sarno, Italy, in fact, marks the third and final round of the single-make championship dedicated to youth development. The last time the Academy “students” were on track was on July 13th in Wackersdorf, Germany.

The Academy Trophy has taken quite a break off track, considering that Round 2 was held in midJuly in Wackersdorf, where it shared track time with the KZ and KZ2 European Championship contenders. So let’s review what went down three months ago, on the half-series match. In Germany the Academy “kids” faced the added challenge of the innovative collapsable front bumper system that the CIK introduced to limit intentional or faulty collisions. To refresh our memories before seeing the system in action once again here in Sarno, in case of voluntary rear-ending, the offender’s

bumper tips forward, dragging on the ground and slowing down his kart. In theory this seems like a promising solution, but in practice it still needs to be improved, considering the several unintended consequences it had on the Horensbergdam track. Results-wise, French driver Alexandre Vromant took the Round 2 win after a truly outstanding rebound run (he gained 23 positions in the prefinal and 5 more in the final) and Richard Verschoor from Holland rounded off the final podium with Kakunoshin Ota from Japan, whose 3rd place finish handed him the lead in the standings.
