EDITORIAL After holding our breaths for so long, we’ll all be letting a deep sigh at the drop of the checkered flag on the La Conca finish-line - all of us, but especially the stars of this great karting season. Some will do so sadly, bitter that their efforts have been in vain and already thinking ahead about their next chance; but others, two drivers above all, will finally take a long, deep breath, before shouting out in joy for a victory worth a whole career, a victory worth the whole world! We have finally reached the event that crowns a whole year of hard work and kilometers of pavement covered at full speed. Our hearts are pounding with adrenaline and the finish-line is looming behind the last corner. One way or another, when the flag will signal “game over”, we’ll all go back to breathing and we’ll probably be smiling, feeling a little lighter. But we won’t be able to relax for long, because the challenges of a new season will soon take up our thoughts, our time, and our dreams again. We’ll once again feel the burning desire to hold the steering wheel or make the paddock perfect. And we’ll be eager for time to fly and lead us into a new adventure. After all, people like us we are probably born to hold their breaths...

ENGINE FOCUS

THE NEW OK ERA Resulting from a long process of prototyping and testing in collaboration with the major manufacturers, the CIK-FIA has released the specifications for the new OK engine concept that with the 2016 homologation session will replace the current KF formula Simplification, streamlining and cost reduction are some of the priorities which have led the CIK-FIA to introduce new engine specifications for 2016 onwards. The aim is to reorient international categories to direct drive, in line with the origins of the sport, and reintroduce them in national championships with a broader base of drivers. After more than three years of reflection, dialogue and testing, the official presentation of the OK engines was made during the European Championship in Britain and revealed a major change in direction. For obvious economic reasons, the new OK engines rely on the work already done with the KF concept, but introducing several essential differences. The clutch, the electric starter, electric wiring and the battery will go, resulting in considerable weight reduction and less wear-and-tear and so greater reliability. The return to direct drive, in line with the origins of the sport, means karts will start by push. To make this easier, the new OK engines are equipped with a decompression valve on the cylinder head. In turn, manufacturers may choose Applicant

between internal and external water pump. The engine capacity of 125cc was maintained the same as the KF, as well as the internal balancing system. It was also decided to use the same type of butterfly carburetor as before, with a diameter of 24 mm for OK and 20 mm for OK-Junior. Instead, another major change regards the exhaust and exhaust valve: for both classes, both elements must meet specific monotype features and be homologated (the valve along with the engine). Another change is the increase of the maximum rev limit, fixed at 16000 rpm for OK and 15000 rpm for OK-J. Instead, in line with the recommendations of the FIA Safety Commission, the minimum weight (fully equipped kart plus driver) has been lowered: 145 kg for the OK category and 140 kg for the OK-J. Last but not least, manufacturers have committed to the goal of cost reduction by agreeing to a retail price of around 2,000 euro. Below is the list of companies who have so far confirmed their participation to the 2016 engine homologation session with models that meet the new OK specifications.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS

KF - HANLEY From karts, to autos, and back to karts, set to prove that he’s as ready as ever to battle for victory. With the 2015 European KF Championship victory, thirty year old Ben Hanley consecrates the values of determination and integrity, proving that always looking ahead and never giving up goes a long way

After “graduating” as UK Champion (National JICA) in 2000, Ben Hanley quickly proved his skills at the international level, winning three Winter Cup editions, all in Formula A (2001, 2004, 2005) and conquering the 2005 Margutti Trophy (Formula A). Not a bad resume, despite his “old age” (he was 20 at the time); actually good enough for the Brit to go on winning in F. Renault 3.5 and GP2. Unfortunately, though, one day Hanley was left “without a ride”. But instead of giving up, he continued believing and returned to karts. He went back to his mentor, Armando Filini, and to being strong, winning the 2014 WSK Champions Cup (KF). Then, in early 2015, he eagerly accepted to follow Filini on his new Mad Croc Karting adventure and delivered an almost perfect European Championship with the new Croc Promotions/TM combo: a dominant win in round 1, first after the Heats and 2nd in the Final in round 2, and again in the lead going into Sunday in round 3. This was all Ben needed to secure the 2015 European crown and prove that determination is worth as much as “authority” when you are a true believer.

10

KFJ - LUNDGAARD In a European KFJ Championship shaped by close values and extreme uncertainty, Christian Lundgaard built his triumph out of relentless effort, always keeping in the heat of battle and producing the winning dash ahead when it most mattered, in the final round in Sweden

After proving his talent at “home”, rising from regional clout (winner of the 2012 South Denmark Kart Cup) to national acclaim (2013 Cadet Junior Danish Vice-Champion), Christian Lundgaard stepped into the international scene with the Tony Kart/Vortex chassis of the Ward Racing Team. He spent 2014 quietly learning and in 2015 suddenly “exploded” as the new star of the KFJ: winner of the Lonato Winter Cup, 2nd in the WSK Champions Cup, and, after 3 hotly contested rounds, winner of the 2015 CIK-FIA European Championship in July. In this highly unpredictable title hunt, the fifteen year old built his triumph out of constancy, conquering at least one point in the heats and final of each of the first two rounds and legitimating it with a double sweep of the Prefinal and the Final in the closing act in Sweden. His consecration as European Champion has already produced a major change in the young Dane’s career. In fact, Christian has since joined Energy Corse and is now ready to prove his worth as the factory team’s lead driver in the World KFJ Championship here in Muro Leccese, before his 2016 debut in the new OK category.

11

LE MANS WINNERS

KZ WORLD CHAMPION JORRIT PEX - His karting career has deep, solid foundations that include a passion shared by the whole family and a partnership with such a well-established and prestigious team as CRG. His triumph was a long way coming and today he is the new World KZ Champion, a “surprising” confirmation If you take a look at the Dutch driver’s resume, you’ll see that, from 2006 onwards, he’s always made at least one major international podium (usually in first place), from the 2006 Rotax Grand Finals (Junior Max) to the 2012 CIK-FIA Europeans (KZ1). So, sure, his World title victory came as a bit of a surprise because his name was not on the list of favorites; but it actually isn’t all that surprising after all, considering the robustness of his career and a full decade of top performance standards. The Le Mans triumph itself was fruit of a mix between steady racing (2nd in Qualifyings, 4th after the Heats, 1st in the Prefinal...) and a decisive pass on the very last lap, the toughest one, where space suddenly seems to get tighter than ever and every position ahead looms like an impossible Everest. With the calm determination of strong men, this natural born talent who races with his family-run outfit, the Pex Racing Team, delivered the perfect weekend, taking CRG on top of the world and with it his “golden family”.

12

KZ2 SUPER CUP WINNER

THOMAS LAURENT - For this French talent who’s come of age in his home country, winning the 2015 CIK-FIA International KZ2 Super Cup in Le Mans and taking his Tony Kart/Vortex to the highest peak in class is nothing short of a dream come true Imagine you are a French kid in love with cars, who dreams all day about Prost and company and their legendary feats in the places that in your country are considered the temples of motorsport. Imagine you start racing karts to experience the rumble of engines first-hand and you quickly fall in love with the sweet taste of victory and the special scent of the world’s most prestigious race tracks. Now, in this great dream, imagine you decide to face the International KZ2 Super Cup, the most important race of the year in your class, precisely at home, in France. And not on some track, but on the legendary Le Mans circuit, again stage to the world karting championship after 24 years. Tough to imagine shouting in triumph at the finishline of this story, even in the wildest of dreams. But, fortunately, truth sometimes goes above and beyond fantasy, because that child who’s now a young man by the name of Thomas Laurent really did win in Le Mans, leaving his rivals far enough behind to cherish every inch of pavement that made his amazing dream come true, for all to see, in the great book of karting.

ACADEMY TROPHY WINNER MARTA GARCIA LOPEZ - The CIK-FIA Academy Trophy aims to help young talents emerge and grow. And yet, the 2015 title hunt crowned a winner... of wisdom. Spain’s Marta Garcia Lopez played a star role all season, giving consistent show of her skills, and in the final act in Le Mans she also gave proof of great maturity, securing the Trophy with a set of nice heats and then choosing to play it safe and leave the track to rivals. Perhaps not as showy as drivers who want to win always, at all costs; but this too is the way of champions towards a promising future.
