EDITORIAL Arriving at Zuera is a bit like coming home... There are so many emotions experienced at this long and fast track where the most prestigious international karting events have been held for years. We have seen many races here, and so many moments to remember. This year will undoubtedly be the same, since the event we are about to experience has, in any case, already made history, with the debut of the new OK and OK-Junior engines in an international CIK-FIA competition. In order to enrich the programme, the KZ also got involved, for the second round of the European Championship after the start in Essay. The ingredients for a great karting weekend are all there. Let the dance begin!

CHAMPIONS

FROM THE KF TO THE OK, THE F The transition to OK engines has been like “resetting” the scenario and asking everyone for a fresh start. Hanley, the 2015 KF champion, will have to “reinvent” himself once more if he wants to retain the title.

BEN HANLEY

2015 KF European Champion On paper, Ben Hanley is the reigning European Champion. However, in practice, the transition from KF engines to the new OK engines means that the deck has been reshuffled and the European Championship seems like the ideal testing ground to establish the new hierarchy. However, there is no doubt that the Englishman has proven time and again in his career that he knows how to take the lead in different situations, having managed to “start over” several times. A man of great experience, Hanley won a lot in karting at the beginning of this century and, later on, in single-seaters, right up to GP2. From there, however, he was also capable of going back to karting, stronger and more competitive than before. He won on shifter karts (2014 WSK Champions Cup) and nonshifter karts, achieving the pinnacle of success at the 2015 KF European Championship. All this while leading a new brand in karting, Croc Promotion, to success. If there is a “man to beat” in the new OK class at the 2016 European Championship, then it is most certainly the defending champion Ben Hanley.

FIRST STEP INTO THE FUTURE There is the utmost uncertainty in the OK-Junior class where, in addition to changes on the engine, the European throne is also vacant, since the 2015 winner (in the KFJ class), Lundgaard, has moved up to the next class.

CHRISTIAN LUNDGAARD 2015 KFJ European Champion

Never has the junior European “started afresh more than this year. The transition to the new OK-Junior engines is itself a huge change. In addition, as always happens in this class, the generational renewal brings many new pilots to Zuera, all itching to impress and take over the mantle of those who, having won last year, have since moved up to the next class. Indeed, Christian Lundgaard is the defending champion, having won the 2015 European Championship that had remained in the balance up until the end and won by the Danish driver, racing for Tony Kart, thanks to a win in the last race in Kristianstad, Sweden. Now, as mentioned, Lundgaard is competing against drivers in the OK class, in which he has had an immediate impact, having started for Energy and subsequently moving to Birel ART midseason. Now, in Spain, it is time to for those aiming to become his successor on the European throne to stake their claims.

REPORT KZ - ESSAY

SUPERB RACE FOR ARDIGÒ

The first Competition of 2016 of the CIK-FIA European KZ KZ2 Championship and CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy took place at the International Circuit of Aunay les Bois / Essay. For everyone, the changing weather and much cooler temperatures for the season required rapid adaptability, particularly during Qualifying Practice on a track with changing grip between the wet and the dry which set the tone of the Competition. Note that the Competition has also changed with the awarding of points for the Prefinal in addition to those already distributed at the end of the Qualifying Heats and of course the Final. For the opening of the CIK-FIA European KZ Championship it was a quality field. The Spaniard Jorge Pescador (Praga / Parilla) took advantage of his pole position in Qualifying Practice to maintain the advantage in both the Qualifying Heats. 10

The Italian Paolo De Conto (CRG / Maxter) was then ranked 2nd ahead of the Frenchman Jérémy Iglesias (Sodi / TM Racing) while Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart / Vortex) came back to 4th position after 10th during Qualifying. Ardigò then asserted his dominance in the final stages by first winning the Prefinal against the Belgian Rick Dreezen (Ricciardo Kart / Parilla) who had new tyres. Iglesias took control early in the Final before yielding to Ardigò, the indisputable winner, and Flavio Camponeschi (CRG / Parilla) on the rise since his 21st in Qualifying. The Czech Patrik Hajek (Kosmic / Vortex) and Briton Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions / TM Racing) completed the top five. In the provisional classification of the Championship, Ardigò and Iglesias lead from Camponeschi, De Conto is 4th and Pescador 5th.
