EDITORIAL Northern Europe. Finland. A land of lakes, endless skies, multi-coloured sunrises and... great drivers! The long tradition of this nation, which still boasts one of the most prolific movements for the production of youngsters aiming to scale the heights of motorsport, has given the world of motorsport a number of champions. Therefore, it is almost natural for the major European karting scene to come to these shores thanks to an event that represents the main addition to the 2017 calendar. An event that, underlining the long love story between Finland and the world of motorsport, will decide the winner of the Academy Trophy. Whoever manages to prevail among the youngest drivers in the circus will be able to watch on as the exponents of non-shifter karting duel it out: the OK and OK-Junior classes, in their fourth round, will begin to glimpse the finish line and know they have to give their best to avoid losing ground before the final sprint. Entertainment and adrenaline are well and truly guaranteed under the Finnish skies.

OK ROUND 3 - LE MANS

TRAVISANUTTO DOMINATES THE FINAL

Travisanutto (Zanardi / Parilla)

71 drivers take part in the third round of the CIK-FIA European Championship at Le Mans. The fastest in the qualifying is the Norwegian Dennis Hauger (CRGParilla), who sets the best time with 53â&#x20AC;?155, only 186 milliseconds better than the French Theo Pourchaire (Kosmic-Vortex), 3rd in the championship. Troubled beginning of the weekend for the OK leader, the Spanish David Vidales Tony kart-Vortex), in the last positions of the time ranking. Hauger continues his very good weekend during the heats, where he is first for three time, one time second and, naturally, conquers the pole position of the final. Second is Pourchaire, with two heats win, ahead of Lorenzo Travisanutto (ZanardiParilla), who wins once. Two victory also for Karol Basz (Kosmic-Vortex), and one each for Callum Bradshaw

(CRG-Parilla) and Isac Blomqvist (Tony Kart-Vortex). During the final, Hauger has to cope with a great Travisanutto, who manages to gain an early lead and to set too fast a pace for the rest of the pack. Hauger trails in his wake for a long time, but towards the end of the race he is overtaken by the Moroccan Sami Taoufik (FA Kart-Vortex), who is eventually the runner-up. Also the British Finlay Kenneally (Tony Kart-Vortex) joins the battle and attacks Hauger. The duel between the two drivers obliges the stewards to give the Norwegian a penalty for an irregular manoeuvre, leaving to Kenneally the third place. The victory in Le Mans allows Travisanutto to gain positions in the Championship standings, right in the race where the category leader Vidales doesn't manage to enter the Final.

MUTH ATTACKS AND WINS

Muth (Zanardi / Parilla)

The third round of the 2017 CIK-FIA European Junior Championship takes place at Le Mans, in the kart circuit set within the magnificent complex which, only two week before, hosted the famous 24 Hours. The first protagonist is Andrea Rosso (Tony Kart-Vortex): 10th in the OKJ Championship, he sets the best time in qualifying on wet track with 1’04”066. Behind him, the second is the Finnish Elias Seppanen (Tony Kart-Vortex). Third place for the English Jonny Edgar (Exprit-TM). The leader, the English Harry Thompson (FA Kart-Vortex) is seventh, but he has many trouble Saturday: he is second in one heat but remains rather behind in the other races and his rivals take advantage of this performance. The Australian Jack Doohan and the British Zak O'Sullivan (both on FA-Vortex), the

Italian Andrea Rosso, the French Gillian Henrion and the Russian Ilya Morozov (all on TonyKart-Vortex), the German O'neill Muth and the French Hadrien David (both on Zanardi-Parilla) and the Dutch Kas Haverkort (CRG-Parilla) win one heat each and they all aiming at success in the Final. Thompson wins one of the two heats run on Sunday, and the other one goes to Muth. This one has a long duel during the Final with his teammate Hadrien David, who starts from the pole position, Edgar and the Spanish Genis Civico (FA Kart-Parilla). All these drivers manage to gain the head of the race, but it’s Muth who, eventually, cross the finishing line in first position. The tussle for the remaining podium positions see David arriving in second ahead of Edgar and Civico.

ACADEMY ROUND 2 - LE MANS

HANDSAEME AHEAD ALL

Handaseme (BEL)

With changing atmosphere conditions, the second round of the CIK-FIA Driver Academy Trophy starts in the mitical Le Mans track. The pole-sitter is the English Alexander Simmonds, ahead of the Dutch Tijmen van der Helm and the Spanish Ruben Moya. The leader of the ranking, Mike van Vugt, is 13th. After the heats, the best driver is the French Sami Meguetounif, who conquers the pole thanks to two wins and one second place. Two victories also for the Belgian Xavier Handsaeme and one each for van der

Helm and Moya. In the Final, Handsaeme gains the leadership at the start and keeps it until the end. Behind him, the battle for the other top positions has serious consequences on the front kart fairings. Some drivers are hit by penalties, among them the Spanish Ayrton Fontecha and the English Alexander Simmonds, who loose their second and third place. So, the remaining steps on the podium are occupied by Meguetounif and the Danish Oliver Skov Skjellerup.

The worst result obtained in the intermediate classifications (established after the Qualifying Heats) and the worst result obtained in the Finals will be discounted. A blank result due to a disqualification may not be discounted. The title of the CIKFIA Championship will be awarded to the Driver who has scored the greatest number of points.

FOCUS ON A CIK-FIA European championship debut for the Finnish circuit designated by the former F1 pilot Mika Salo, and officially called Powerpark Circuit. The property is located near Powerpark, a large amusement park, but the circuit is not at all "playful". Fast and demanding, it stretches over 1,300 metres and also has an underpass. The Arctic Circle is less than 500 km away to the north.
