EDITORIAL After a promising "baptism" at Sarno, which saw a large number of drivers take part in the OK and OKJ non-shifter classes, the KZ class takes to the track once more in Genk for its second round, while the KZ2 and the Academy Trophy make their debuts. The latter, in particular, is a marvellous recurrence that attracts drivers from all over the world, including countries making their first appearance in Genk such as Chile, Colombia, Kuwait, Morocco and Peru. The contagious enthusiasm of the youngsters is a perfect backdrop to the expert manoeuvres of the contenders in the shifter classes, of which the KZ is the pinnacle in karting professionalism. Belgium, therefore, offers us the wonderful sight of the full range of passions that our magnificent sport is capable of providing: those of young enthusiasts at their first race on such a prestigious stages and those of hardened professionals still capable of experiencing the thrill of victory as it were the first time. KZ - ROUND 1 SARNO DE CONTO BEATS ALL IN KZ

De Conto (CRG / TM)

A paddock with all the colours of the world has welcomed the participants of the European CIKFIA Championship. In the KZ class there was 25 drivers of all the most important karting teams. Among them, the Finnish Simo Puhakka (KosmicVortex) was the fastest driver in qualifying. His 55748 was enough to beat the Italian Paolo De Conto (CRG-TM) for only two milliseconds. In the first heat, the Czech Patrik Hajek (KosmicVortex), third after the qualifying, stroke back and won the first race ahead of the French Anthony Abbasse (Sodi-TM) and Puhakka, who signed the best lap of the race. Puhakka immediately got his payback in the second race, where he arrived first. Abbasse was the runner-up again, with De Conto third. Always these three drivers conquered the first three

04

places also in the third heat, but in this order: De Conto was first, Abbasse was second again, and Puhakka third. Thanks to this results, Puhakka started from pole position in the Final and immediately had to battle against Abbasse, who had managed to gain the lead of the race. Then the two frontrunners made contact and paved the way to the Dutch Stan Pex (CRG-TM) and De Conto. They took over the leadership with Pex in first and De Conto in second. Few moments later the Italian driver passed Pex and won the race, while Hajek took advantage of the situation and managed to gain the runner-up position. Excellent performance for the Dutch Bas Lammers, who recovered from the tenth position and scored third.

ACADEMY... OF CHAMPIONS The Academy Trophy is the CIK-FIA event dedicated to the less experienced kart drivers. Right from the start it was organised alongside the most important CIK-FIA competitions, so that the younger drivers could get a taste for international karting, the initiative has been very successful, thanks to low costs and the same material being provided to everyone, brought to the track by the organisation, which helps nurture the drivers’ talent. Over the years, many drivers competed in this class and some currently compete at extremely high levels. For example, Leclerc from Monaco, winner of the 2011 CIK-FIA Academy Trophy, who is now an FDA driver, reigning GP3 champion and currently leading the GP2 championship.

KZ AND KZ2 REGULATIONS THE CHAMPIONSHIP: PRINCIPLE AND RUNNING The Championship is run over four (KZ) or three (KZ2) Competitions. The Competitions counting towards the Championship («the Competitions») will have the status of full international Competitions. Each Competition will comprise a final phase named «Final» in accordance with the number of participants in the Competition. The distance of the Final, from the starting signal to the chequered flag, will be equal to the minimum number of full laps necessary for reaching the respective distances of 30 km. The chequered flag will be shown to the leading kart when it crosses the finishing line («the Line») at the end of the lap during which that distance is reached. The Line consists in a single line across the track.

CLASSIFICATION The classification will be established as follows: 80% of the results rounded up or down to the nearest figure will count. The worst result obtained in the intermediate classifications (established after the Qualifying Heats) and the worst result obtained in the Finals will be discounted. A blank result due to a disqualification may not be discounted. The title of the CIK-FIA Championship will be awarded to the Driver who has scored the greatest number of points.

ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENT The Championship is reserved for KZ1 and KZ2 karts as defined in the Technical Regulations. At Scrutineering, each Driver is entitled to submit: 2 chassis of the same make, 2 engines of the same make. The karts must be presented in full configuration (assembled chassis + bodywork + extra components) with the engines. As from Free Practice, each Driver may have the following equipment: 2 chassis and 2 engines, those marked at Scrutineering.

POINT SYSTEM

The “hot” phases worth points towards the Championship title are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points will be assigned to the TOP 10 of the combined Intermediate Standings (established after the Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.

SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACE In case of any dangerous conditions, such as an accident blocking the way, the Track Clerk/Race Director may decide to stop the race, by showing the red flag on the Finish Line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefinal, or a Final: all karts must slow down and will be directed either to the Service Park entrance, or asked to stop on track. If the race is suspended definitely, the classification of the Race will be the classification at the end of the lap prior to that during which the signal to stop the Race was given. If the race is to resume, Drivers will be warned at least 10 minutes in advance. The race will re-start in “slow” mode (signalled by the yellow flag). The length of the new race will be equal to the difference between the scheduled number of laps and the number of laps covered. The Drivers who have crossed the Finish Line at the end of the lap prior to that on which the race was stopped will be allowed to take the new start.
